Five members of the extremist group from Westboro Baptist Church out of Topeka, Kansas showed up on Old Bridge Road to protest at Woodbridge Senior High School. The Westboros were greeted by about 200 counter-demonstrators waving flags, signs with positive messages and singing “God Bless America.” The principal of WSHS had asked the school community to ignore Westboro. Apparently he was ignored also. Westboro was greatly outnumbered.
The message was clearly sent: Don’t Mess with Woodbridge.
Apparently the activities stirred up quite a traffic jam and one can only imagine the sights the students coming in on buses got to enjoy.
UPDATE: Westboro did not make it to the Coast Guard Recruiting Center. There were plenty of folks out on Smoketown Road for the counter-demonstration there also.
Insidenova.com will have continuing coverage.
I guess the hue and cry of the militia still works in the modern era. 😉
I guess they were chicken to go around to the Coast Guard station. Jerks.
They ended up somewhere around the parkway and Smoketown.
The love fest at Woodbridge High was AWESOME!!!! What a blast!
Did you go, Pinko?
I attended a burial today at Arlington National Cemetery. On the way in, I saw a group of people on both sides of the road near the entrance to the cemetery waving flags and hold signs that said “God Bless you Lance Corporal Honeycutt.” Inside, I saw a very large crowd gathered at a gravesite in the distance. The group included what looked like a hundred bikers in leather jackets. I checked the internet tonight and saw where the deviants from Westboro had planned to picket Lance Corporal Terry Honeycutt’s funeral in Maryland and his burial at Arlington National Cemetery. Lance Corporal Honeycutt was a 19 year old killed in action in Afghanistan in late October. The bikers were from the Patriot Guard Riders, a group of bikers who honor fallen heroes. The Patriot Guard Riders website says they are motivated by respect for the fallen and don’t care if those who join their efforts are hawk or doves, rich or poor, liberal or conservative, or Vets or not. It’s too bad it takes young men and women losing their lives for the living to find a reason to set aside their differences and come together for a real patriotic cause. It was good, however, to see so many turn out on a workday to show their support and respect for a fallen Marine. And it was good not to see hide nor hair of the Westboro wimps. http://somd.com/news/headlines/2010/12807.shtml
@Moon-howler
Yes indeedy.
I’ve almost decided that WBC members, who are related to or reside near the Phelps family, must be inbred. That’s the only explanation I can come up with for their bizarre behavior.
I am being serious here.
@Pinko, you might be right.
@Moe, great story for sure and the deviants were drowned out.
It should pain Westboro to know that the US flag and the Maryland flag were flown at half mast to honor Lance Corporal Honeycutt. It should also pain them to know that so many people of different persuassions have come together because of their nastiness.
