President Obama has nominated Sonya Sotomayor for the upcoming Supreme Court vacancy.  The 24 hour cable news networks are all going nuts over this nomination, picking her apart before the Senate even has a chance to do it.    The contributors on this blog have some very strong feelings about this nomination.  Here’s your space.

  1. hello

I think that we should take a poll…

Would it be racist or sexist if a white male said:

““I would hope that a wise white man with the richness of his experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a Hispanic woman who hasn’t lived that life.”

I say it would be a biased, ignorant statement for any “JUDGE” to make and should disqualify them for office.

  3. Rick Bentley

    On the other thread :

“The Judge’s point was that our country will be better served by a court that reflects our diversity. ”

She also revealed in her comment – you hardly need to be a practicing psyciatrist to catch this – that she feels superior to me by virtue of her “struggle” and “diversity of experience”.

Obama can get her on the court, and is seems to be suiting his political interests well (courting favor with Latinos and women, and keeping the GOP tied up in infighting). But she will never be respected by many Americans, she is and will be a symbol of racial favoritism, and her continuing presence on the court will only serve to keep America further divided.

Which works for Obama. He’s pursuing the Latino vote, not trying to get Americans to see the workld as fair or judicious, or to bring us together.

    It’s shameful.

  5. Rick Bentley

Her statement should disqualify her for two reasons :

    1. It’s so biased

    2. It shows that she is not very bright, (or judicious) to word it like that in a public forum

  6. hello

I think your right Rick about his reasons behind nominating Sotomayor. I also think that a few other factors played a role, he has been getting more and more pressure to push comprehensive immigration reform but he knows he can’t do that now with our current unemployment levels. So, he makes this pick to appease the Hispanic vote that helped get him elected so that it buys him more time for amnesty. I’m guessing the amnesty push will happen either when unemployment numbers get better or it’s about time to start running for the next election.

  7. @hello
Obama would have been better served by addressing how various perspectives bring more to the table but that the Judicial table must always be set with the law.

(Forked tongues belong on the left, by the way. Sorry….couldn’t help myself :))

Rick, once again, it is not a threat to you or any white male if women and minorities feel we have a perspective that can add something to society. The white male perspective will never be stamped out. You just have to allow room for other perspectives now that we are doing away with the institutional barriers that have delayed equal rights for so long.

Having a diversity of experiences and backgrounds on the Supreme Court IS BETTER than not having any diversity. I wouldn’t want them to all be women, or all be minorities either. But let’s try to accept that there needs to be more diversity in all institutions of government and not be so bitter about it.

“Having a diversity of experiences and backgrounds on the Supreme Court IS BETTER than not having any diversity. ” Inherently? Just like that? Shall we nominate pedophiles, religious extremists, etc. etc?

Having a Latino judge and/or female judge is fine by me but one who feels so entitled as to think she’s inherently more qualified BECAUSE she’s a female Latino? She’s an idiot to say that. And, some of her court decisions have been idiotic. (That baseball strike case was clear judicial activism – the kind of stupid crap that many Americans have come to expect and loath from our elitist ruling class).

Sotomayor clearly lives in a left-wing bubble to have uttered that statement about her viewpoint being inherently more valid.

My apologies. The right hand didn’t know what the left hand was doing. Alanna and I both put up threads. Hers is better than mine. I would merge them if I knew how.

Right now, you all have heard talking heads and sound bites. Let’s wait for the confirmation hearings to hear it with our own 2 ears rather than have something reguritated for us.

I don’t know if I like her or not. I expect I will have mixed feelings. Truthfully, I would put up with some things I don’t like to preserve Roe v Wade. I expect that Hello probably feels that he would put up with things he doesn’t like to preserve 2nd amendment rights for individuals.

I know I don’t care much for Alito and Roberts. I can’t stand Scalia and Thomas. Sandra Day O’Connell was more my speed.

“Let’s wait for the confirmation hearings”

I have no faith in that process.

  12. hello

I agree with you Moon, we should wait for the hearings. If what you hear in the rumor mill about her not being the sharpest tool in the shed is true it should be apparent when she tried to answer questions during her confirmation.

Obama could have another Biden type to deal with… 🙂

  13. Moon-howler

    Duct tape cures all, Hello.

Rick, it doesn’t matter if we trust the process or not. It is the way it is done. For that matter, do you trust elections? I feel we will know more about her. And even if you hate everything you hear about her, what are you or I going to do about it? She is one of 9 and she is not tipping the balance of things.

  14. Rick Bentley

“If what you hear in the rumor mill about her not being the sharpest tool in the shed is true it should be apparent when she tried to answer questions during her confirmation.”

The conformation process is total BS. It’s kind of like a beauty pageant, and they just try to not pull a Miss California and say anything stupid on top of what they’ve already said. Expect to hear a bunch of speeches from legislators and a bunch of lukewarm pablum from the nominee. These things are only exciting if someone has sexually harassed someone else, or the one time Biden managed to sink Bork.

  15. Rick Bentley

“what are you or I going to do about it?”

Post angrily on blogs, of course!

  16. Moon-howler

And you think that is productive?

    Just curious.

  17. Rick Bentley

    Only slightly.

  18. Moon-howler

Probably makes you feel better though.

I rather like it that bork has become a verb.
