Often through the month I receive emails concerning different local events that people would like advertised. From here on out, around the first of the month I’ll put a thread up. Try and keep this thread reserved for events and comments about events. Additionally, we will not advertise for any groups deemed ‘extremist’ organizations by the Anti-Defamation League, namely Help Save Manassas. Otherwise, feel free to post event details including when, where and any additional contact information.

11 Thoughts to “June Event Calendar”

  1. Thanks, Alanna. Here’s another event on June 14:

Is a loved one’s home buried in clutter, isolating them from family and friends? Have you heard of projects (Habitat, Mend-a-House, Week of Hope) that involve clearing truckloads of debris from private homes?

See the Manassas premiere of “My Mother’s Garden,” a documentary by Cynthia Lester, Sunday, June 14, 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, Trinity Episcopal Church, 9325 West Street, Manassas in the Parish Hall.

A facilitated discussion about compulsive hoarding disorder
with Rev. Douglas Thorpe of the Center for Pastoral Counseling of Virginia will follow the 68-minute film. Refreshments will be provided!
Sponsored by Women of Trinity and the MDG Group.

Admission is free, but donations of new or used tools for youth of Georgetown South to do cleanup projects this summer are welcome:
Working mowers, gasoline cans, bottles of small engine oil, weed whackers, electric edgers, extension cords, string for weed whackers, rakes, shovels, pitchforks, clippers, pruning shears, hand shovels, weeding tools, work gloves, eye safety goggles, paper yardwaste bags, outdoor brooms and dustpans, donations of money to purchase gasoline, Home Depot or Lowes gift cards.

Enjoy an evening outdoors listening to the fresh sound of traditional and contemporary bluegrass and folk music by The Fitzmaurice Band.

Bring blankets and chairs for lawn seating. Refreshments and snacks will be on sale.

A freewill offering will be collected for Farthest Corners Mission Relief Programs, which include: partnering with Karen Christians to establish “Mr. Happy’s Home,” a hostel/orphanage; providing medical kits for people in hiding from Burmese Army attacks; buying horses and mules to transport supplies to the displaced; and providing emergency rice, medicine and school supplies, cooking utensils, blankets, toilets, clothing, hymnals, Bibles and mosquito nets.

This Saturday June 6 is a county clean up day. The dumpsters will be at Sudley Elem on Copeland Drive from 8AM to Noon

Prince William County established a litter control program in the fall of 1997. The program’s goal is to improve the appearance and image of the community where VDOT and neighborhood groups are unable. The County currently supports four two-crew member teams that remove trash and debris within the State right-of-way. Accomplishments for fiscal year 2008 are:

Tons of trash and debris collected – 123.74 tons (247,480 pounds of beverage container, fast food litter, etc.)
Lane miles cleaned – 930 miles (4,910,400 feet)
Illegal advertising signs removed from the state right-of-way – 28,939
Number of community clean ups supported (Adopt-A-Spot, Adopt-A-Stream) – 61
Number of properties cleared of trash and debris (usually abandoned properties) – 483
All this while staying safe from passing traffic!

    County Clean Ups

An important initiative is the County Clean Up campaign. Almost every warm-weather month of the year, usually on the first Saturday of the month, the Solid Waste Division of Public Works partners with Neighborhood Services’ Litter Control to sponsor the clean ups. Open-top containers are brought to sites around the County; residents bring trash and refuse items to the site for disposal. Support the campaign to make Prince William the cleanest county in Virginia! Dispose of your unused, unwanted and improperly stored items. Plan for your community clean up using the chart below.

Community groups have had success cleaning up their neighborhoods by linking activities to the County Clean Ups. Several weeks in advance, the really successful groups begin to get the word out through their email lists or Neighborhood Watches. They find volunteers to drive pick up trucks or trailers around the neighborhood to help others get their items to the dumpster sites. The Sudley Neighborhood Watch did this and collected more than 22 tons of trash that no longer detracts from their neighborhood! Bring this idea to your neighbors and contact Neighborhood Services at 703-792-7018 if you need tips with getting an effort started.

County clean ups are held from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. Hazardous waste will not be accepted; but you can get rid of all the other clutter! If you have questions, please call Neighborhood Services at 703-792-7018.

Typical County Clean Up Dates and Locations

Unless there is a holiday, the date for the County Clean Ups is the first Saturday.
Dates for Clean Ups after June, 2009 are dependent on PWC budget constraints. Call Neighborhood Services for updates.

    Public event message:

antibvbl.net and bvbl.net are losing bloggers. Over the past month, both blogging sites have seen asignificant drop in message traffic.

Why? They are both failing to address key national and local issues that concern local citizens. Have they been threatened with lawsuits or threatened by political pressure from government administrations?

Here are some examples of key issues they failed to address ovewr the past several weeks.

    1. Holder overturns bush illegal immigration ruling
    2. H1B wage concessions and import of foreign labor has caused a 6% drop in enginnering and software development wages.

    http://www.earthside.com/earthside/illegal_immigration/index.html

    3. Jackson ruling overturned by supreme court, now allows police officers to question suspects without the mandatory presence of an attorney.

    4. Subcontractors working for major corporations say they are not required by law to check e-verify of their employees, or verify their subcontractos are using e-verify.

    5. Sonia Sotamayer used the term “wise latino women would make better decisions than a white male” on more than one occassion over TEN YEAR PERIOD almost word for word as she shows her true racial attitudes and advocacy for latino superiority.

    6. GM goes bankrupt

    7. Your local banks get bailed out, while charging you higher interest rates and loan fees.

    8. Bernenke defends bailouts of companies that will not be allowed to fail, even though they have been corrupt and predatory in lending practices for years. He is afraid the TARP bailouts will not work and the economy will collapse anyway, the banks will fail anyway and millions of Americans will be out of work, while bank CEOs will still walk away with billions in salary and jobs they give to each other.

These are just few of the issues covered by CSpan and other news sources that affect all citizens that both blogs have failed to address as relevant topics for discussion, choosing to address political party campaign and holiday issues as being more relevant.

Yeah right…both blogs are averaging only a few comments per post.

  8. michael

before you get upset alanna, elena, moon, and greg, I would be happy to suggest topics of relevance each week that people really care about solving and discussing….

  9. michael

Good post Chris, I personally would like to see how I can legaly be involved with obtaining a permit to allow me to officially remove the ugly and annoying “yard sale and home sale signs” that litter my community streets.

  10. michael

The Pennsylvania community illegal immigration law that was targeting landlords that rented to illegal immigrants, and businesses that employed illegal immigrants that was overturned by a distric court activist judge, will be appealed. Community citizens are realizing we are in a fight with the entire government and political system to protect our own rights over the rights of illegal immigrants which are given preference. The law will likely reach the supreme court as a test to ensure all citizens, niot just illegal immigrants are given equal protection under the law.

  11. Moon-howler

I bet Greg isn’t going to like finding out he is getting left messages over here. Just a hunch…..
