Many of us are moaning and groaning and gnashing our teeth over the new redistricting proposals.  Perhaps being sucked into the 13 was the worst insult of all to Lafayette and me.

Here are the maps of the Hampton Roads area. You can go any where in VA using your mouse.  A left click will tell you your district.

16 Thoughts to “VA districts released”

  1. Lafayette

It sure was. I’m 555′ from the split between the 13th and 50th and 407′ from the split of WestGate(Gainesville-Moon stays & I would go to Coles. UFB!!!
Really seems like an early April Fools joke or punishment of sorts.

  2. Elena

You know what they say Laf, misery loves company! Welcome to my world.

  3. Any idea what Bristow would be? I don’t see us on the map (no surprise there).

  4. Steve Thomas

    Moon and Laf,

    I am sure it wasn’t personal….

    1. @Steve, are you sure? That would be a hell of a thing to do to someone….give him Laf and me.

  5. Lafayette

    Steve Thomas :Moon and Laf,
    I am sure it wasn’t personal….

I didn’t think it was. I’ve never spoke to the man. It’s like Moon said when you look at the votes between Miller and Marshall, they are the same. So, it really doesn’t matter for now. We have who we have, at least for now. With that being said, the portion Jackson lost really could make things a difficult for the “Delegate for Life” Marshall win next year.
It’s POLITICS!! (At least that’s someone once told me about these things). As I recall his intitials were ST. 🙂

    1. @Laf and Steve
That must stand for saint. snicker

  6. Steve Thomas

It would seem that ST person knows a thing or two about politics. I’ll bet ST is wondering if the new demographic in the 13th, might be payback for some of the intra-GOP fights that have occurred over the past few years. Bob has picked a few. A look at the 50th, and it would appear that it’s now a more strongly GOP district. I guess the next election-cycle will see if this bears out.

    1. @Steve
ST isn’t the only one who has come up with that one. MH has many sources and more than one has made that suggestion.

In the world of Moon …paybacks are rough.

  7. Lafayette

I’m sure ST isn’t the only one, but ST is the one that pointed this fact out to me. It was duly noted, and changed the way I looked at things. 🙂

    Steve,
I agree with about the 50th looking more favorable for the GOP. Things are going to be very interesting around here over the next two election cycles. It really is wierd how sliced and diced WestGate and Sudley could be become. Especially if the proposed 7 district plan is approved as it looks today. I believe we will still be in the 29th.

  8. As much as I would like to see districting that keeps Virginia red….I would much rather see a plan based on completely non partisan, probably computer picked, districts. That won’t happen because the fed’s can’t let minority districts get diluted.

  9. @Cargo, maybe its that 60 year old DOJ thing.

I would prefer to see the districts impartially chosen also.

@Lafayette,you know, all this has more or less killed my will to vote. I doubt that I will even be voting for anyone in the state ever again. Sideshow Bob is going to trot out his ‘How to work a precinct’ using his church people and apparently most of the people in the old 13th just don’t give a damn.

And in reality he isn’t any worse than the others. He is just goes about it more embarrassingly. I just want separation of church and state. Is that too much to ask?

  10. These districts are the CHOICE of the House and the Senate. Better maps are at…

very interesting article about what could have been, has the House and Senate opted for guidelines that allowed a 5% population variance from targets instead of the respective 1% and 2% they chose. many more communities could have been kept together, but i suspect that was not the point.

    Bruce,
The first link doesn’t have “map data available” when you put in an address in to search. I figured it out a little better. I couldn’t believe what a fiasco it was as they “released” these maps Tuesday night. There one minute, gone the next.

I read a similar article yesterday like this one. I think a 5% variance is way too much at the state level. I have no problem with 5% at the county level, because we have plenty of houses in the pipeline yet to be built. Then add to that, we have 5 supervisors that are more than willing to act irresponsibly when it comes to land use issues.

I still hope each and every supervisors is challenged this year. Enough of some running unchallenged while raking in those campaign dollars.

    1. Dr. Fuller said on TV over the weekend that over a million more people will need to move into NoVA in the next decade just to fill the jobs that will be here. Maybe we don’t have as much excess housing as we think with that in mind. He said that schools will have to hang help wanted signs in the windows.

re challenges–how many seats are going unchallenged? Who is challenging whom in what district and when is the deadline for filing?

  12. Lafayette

As of now only Stewart and Stirrup have challengers. The last election several went unchallenged. I don’t remember the details. I could dig it up if need be. I recall Covington, Caddigan, and Nohe went unchallenged.
