Ten Candidates Sign Rural Crescent Pledge
Press Conference Aug. 4, 2:00 pm, McCoart Govt. CenterIn 2000, Prince William citizens, concerned with protecting the integrity of the Rural Crescent and its associated community benefits, formed the Advocates for the Rural Crescent. We are a bipartisan organization comprised of community members throughout Prince William County.
The Rural Crescent stands as Prince William County’s unique land use tool. It is not merely a means of conserving open space, but just as importantly, it is a critical tool that directs high density development to areas where infrastructure is already in place and encourages redevelopment in targeted areas, such as the Route 1 corridor.
We all have a vested interest in Prince William County and the viability of the Rural Crescent. In the spirit of that endeavor, we invite all candidates – new and incumbent candidates who have honored previous pledges – to clarify their position by signing a pledge to uphold the Rural Crescent, as described in the Prince William County Comprehensive Plan.
We are pleased to announce that most candidates running for seats on the Prince William County Board of Supervisors have signed our pledge, committing to uphold the Rural Crescent and signaling their support for better managed growth Countywide. These candidates include:
Board Chairman – John Gray, Babur Lateef
Gainesville District – Martha Hendley, Ann Wheeler, Suzanne Miller, Michael High.
Brentsville District – Jeanine Lawson
Coles District – Bob Pugh, Anthony Arnold
Occoquan District – Mike May (Reaffirmation)To honor these candidates, we will hold a press conference on August 4th, 2 pm at the McCoart Government Center, 1 County Complex, Woodridge, VA.
This is an opportunity for the candidates to speak to the issue and for citizens to have chance to meet the candidates who are committed to balanced growth in Prince William County. The August 23rd primary is a critical opportunity to support balanced growth candidates.
Advocates for the Rural Crescent welcome the partnership of Prince William Citizens for Balanced Growth. The mission of Prince William Citizens for Balanced Growth is to work with local officials and citizens to balance traffic, taxes, job growth, public school, and quality-of-life issues with residential growth. The Rural Crescent plays an integral roles in all these issues.

Interesting…only one incumbant.
Isn’t that interesting? It is interesting to note that the Chairman isn’t reaffirming and that no incumbant Democrat has signed.
I would think that Pete Canland would also have signed. Much of the Rural Crescent is in the district where he is running. Mr. Stirrup was also a fairly strong supporter of the Rural Crescent.
My guess is that Pete Canland is getting some bad advice from perhaps one of his campaign managers. Is Pete Canland going to help sell out the Rural Crescent like Corey has done? Is Corey his mentor? Do we see another Avendale in his future?
Someone needs to urge Pete to do the right thing and pledge to support the Rural Crescent if he is going to run for Gainesville Supervisor.
I have heard Wally is very close to his campaign.
Frank Principi is intending to sign the pledge, there have just been a few communication glitches. So there are two incumbents, as soon as I get Franks pledge, it will be posted. John Jenkins, Marty, Wally, and Maureen never signed the pledge, and well, we know what Corey thought of his pledge through his Avendale vote.
It doesn’t count until the ink is on the paper.
I am just surprised that Canland won’t sign on to protecting the rural crescent. I can’t imagine why he would want to open all that up to development. Pretty soon the Gainesville District will look like the rest of the county.
My sources tell me that Peter Candland is very tight with Wally and that Corey is quietly supporting him, stabbing Martha Hendley – a long time Corey loyalist – in the back. Typical for Corey. Wally has never made a secret of his desire to sewer the entire Rural Crescent so that it will open to unlimited development. Apparently Candland is fully on board with Wally. If Republicans nominate Candland instead of Hendley, and Covington instead of Lawson, anyone who cares about protecting the Rural Crescent should look to Ann Wheeler as their only hope in the west end of the county.
Little birds have told me that “ensuring adequate infrastructure ” that one sees in Canland’s literature is code for bringing sewer into the rural crescent. I also heard that his attendance wasn’t too hot, especially compared to several others who are running for the same office, while serving on various Gainesville District committees.
Are my birds accurate? Perhaps there is an attendance record?
My sources tell me you’re dead on with regard to the attendance record, and the source of his campaign advice.
I hope people are paying attention and VOTE in the republican primary August 23rd!
Ditto Elena. Candland will be a vote for the post-election schemes Wally and Corey are cooking up with the developers in return for all the money they are getting. Corey still thinks he can be a US Senator and is selling out the county and long-time supporter Martha Hendley to get the developer money. Ann would be a great supervisor for Gainesville but doesn’t stand a chance against Corey, Wally and all that money. I hope Lawson and Pugh can take out Covington and Nohe but am not holding my breath. Martha has got to win this primary.
Last time I checked Botello, Miller and High were still in the race and 2 of them signed the pledge. None of them may have the flash of Candland or the name recognition of Hendley but listening to them all speak at NVCC today, all a very credible candidates and should not be discounted.
