From the Washington Post

by Steve Hendrix

Late in the morning of the Tuesday that changed everything,  Lt. Heather “Lucky” Penney  was on a runway at Andrews Air Force Base and ready to fly. She had her hand on the throttle of an F-16 and she had her orders: Bring down United Airlines Flight 93. The day’s fourth hijacked airliner seemed to be hurtling toward Washington. Penney, one of the first two combat pilots in the air that morning, was told to stop it.

The one thing she didn’t have as she roared into the crystalline sky was live ammunition. Or missiles. Or anything at all to throw at a hostile aircraft.

Lt. Penney was a rookie  and had just finished up her training in Nevada.  Now she was being asked to stop hijacked commercial planes with no weapons.  Basically, she was being asked to become a kamikaze pilot.  Lt. Penney first caught our attention when we listened to the audio takes in the New York Times.   ere she is:

4 Thoughts to “Lt. Heather Lucky Penney”

  1. Thanks Big Dog. The 404 was because of “Lucky” in the title. Grrrrrr

  2. marinm

Reminds me of the movie By Dawn’s Early Light.

You can skip ahead to around the 9th minute.

  3. Wolverine

“Lucky” is now somehow a forbidden word?!!! How do these things happen?

  4. Wolverine, I had quote marks around Lucky to show it was a nickname. It was the quote marks that created the 404 error. I have no idea why.
