People from South Carolina must be mortified these days by their GOP leadership. Can you fathom actually saying that out loud and believing it would be seen as a compliment? Do these GOP Chairmen not know that there are factions of people that believe Jews control the worlds wealth and are the evil incarnate?

As quoted from these two men, I kid you not.

South Carolina Republicans found an unfortunate way to praise their U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, extolling how, like wealthy Jews, the senator is “watching our nation’s pennies.”

That description came in an op-ed over the weekend written for The Times and Demcorat of Orangeburg by a pair of county GOP chairmen, Edwin Merwin and James Ullmer. The chairmen’s opinion piece was first flagged online by the liberal tpm.com.

“There is a saying that the Jews who are wealthy got that way not by watching dollars, but instead by taking care of the pennies and the dollars taking care of themselves,” the two wrote.

Poor Senator DeMint, through no fault of his own, has been caught up in this luncacy! His response was excellent!

DeMint, who is up for reelection next year, said, “I just read the op-ed last night and the comments were thoughtless and hurtful. The chairmen have apologized as they should have.”

23 Thoughts to ““Senator DeMint Watching Pennies Like A Jew”………”

hehehehehehehehehehehehehe… sorry, all I can do is laugh and cry at some of the stuff these guys do…

  2. hello

I’m glad DeMint did the right thing in this situation. What kind of idiot says something like that…

Also, I find it pretty amusing how much you get a kick out of all of the stupid things Republicans say but seem to never mention any of the dumb things Democrats say… like how much you look to and admire one of the greatest mass murders of the 20th century. You know, things like that never get mentioned here, I wonder why….?

    Hello,
I hate to burst your bubble, O.K. , not really, I enjoy bursting your bubble. Various republicans have recited Mao….McCain, Rove, Goldwaters advisor said he “always followed the advice of Mao” etc.

I don’t think any of these politicians “admired” Mao, and they certainly weren’t interested in emulating him. Do you actually believe ANY American would want to bring the pain that Mao brought to his people to U.S. citizens? THAT is why it isn’t mentioned, cause it’s silly logic.

Do I hear more Republican whining? Defend your own instead of whining.

I’ll still never forget local Congressman Jim Moran’s statements about Jews. If people forget – just do a google search on it and they’ll turn up. Republican’s aren’t the only ones making bigoted statements about Jews. I’m glad Moran isn’t my representative, i would never have voted for him after hearing the remarks he made. He said the Jewish/pro-Israeli lobby promoted the war in Iraq and that while it doesn’t represent all American Jews, represents a good portion of them and they’ve put a lot of money into making sure the war happens, etc. In short, he said in not so many words that the American Jews were the ones to blame for the Iraq war.

  6. OMG! That is WORSE than a Macacca moment!

    From CNN

At a March 3 antiwar forum in Reston, Virginia, outside Washington, Moran talked about why he felt the antiwar movement was not stronger in the United States.

“If it were not for the strong support of the Jewish community for this war with Iraq, we would not be doing this,” said Moran, whose remarks were first reported by the Reston Connection newspaper. “The leaders of the Jewish community are influential enough that they could change the direction of where this is going, and I think they should.”

The leader of the Jewish Community Council of Washington criticized Moran for the remarks.

“The Jewish community is deeply offended,” said Ronald Halber, executive director of the JCC, explaining that no one group has that much influence over U.S. foreign policy.

“Besides being patently untrue and foolish, your poisonous remarks are reminiscent of age-old vicious canards that have been hurled against Jews for generations,” the JCC said in a letter to Moran.

Moran, a seven-term lawmaker, issued an apology Monday for the comments

While Moran didn’t speak particularly well on this topic, it is hard to deny that many pro-Israeli groups supported the war in Iraq, for obvious reasons. Why wouldn’t they? Senator Lieberman stands out as an example of strong support for the Iraqi war. Any time the subject of weapons of mass destruction come up, Israel is sitting in the hot seat.

Anyway you cut it, Moran definitely said “we would not be doing this” if not for the strong support of the Jewish community. Other articles claim he said some different things that are even more offensive sounding, talking about how much money many American Jews were pouring into the pro Israeli lobby in connection with its support of the Iraq war. Even this version – he is saying we wouldn’t have gone to war with Iraq if not for the American Jews. Even at that time, the war in Iraq was unpopular, and he seemed to be blaming it all on the American Jewish pro-Israeli lobby.

Somehow he survived the statements, unfortunately, even though his district has a reasonably substantial Jewish population. Then again, Moran has done a lot of stupid things, but somehow manages to keep getting reelected.

  9. Gainesville Resident

As far as South Carolina – maybe it has a disproportionate share of politicians saying or doing stupid things these days….

  10. Moon-howler

I agree he was awkward. However, I have never known Moran to be anti semitic. I think his anti war sentiments outweighed his pro-Israeli sentiments. He could have said it better though and not had to apologize. Obviously, Israel has the most to lose should the wrong pair of hands get on the wrong weapons. Hell, Israel has the most to lose just by being where it is.

Many Republicans make it so easy….

This was just a post looking for a place to land.

  12. Slowpoke Rodriguez

So, if I’m hearing correctly, DeMint didn’t say this, somebody in the GOP said it. So you really think you’ve found something cool, here don’t you? Young Turks…..uh-huh, whatever. You haven’t posted stuff the Rev. Wright has said, have you?

  13. hello

You still didn’t answer the question Elena… 🙂

Why don’t you ever see any of the stupid things Democrats say? I’m just trying to help because you could really have some interesting topics here. Your limiting this site to just 50% of the stupid things said by politicians.

That is assuming you believe Democrats are capable of saying stupid things…

  14. hello

I think Ill start taking bets on how many Palin threads there will be after her appearance on Oprah… I’m going to at least 4, maybe 5.

  15. Starryflights

This is why Republicans lose elections. They say racist things like this and that costs them lots of votes. They should get used to being a minor party.

    Yeah…..hold that thought!

First of all, I am looking at CURRENT events. I will take your suggestions into consideration Hello, where I file all your recommendations 😉

    Slow,
I could have just posted the words only , but I found the video and thought it fit well with the written story. Actually, no, I don’t think the story cool. I think the GOP needs to have some serious “sensitivity” training before electing people to leadership roles.

I was outraged when he said, for Hello and Slow, if there had been such things as blogs back then, I would have commented on it for sure!

  19. Elena

“when he said THAT STATEMENT” …… mind fast forwarded through the remainder of that sentence!

  20. Moon-howler

I am obviously sticking up for the wrong guy on that one.

We all know what friends of the Jews Lefties are!! How much did we just give to the Palestinians so they could buy school books, medicine and band-aids (bombs, missiles, and guns)? How’s obama treating Israel?

  23. Elena

    Slow,
You may find this hard to believe, but I have real empathy for the Palestinians. It is hard to imagine there ever being a peace. I knew a guy, nice Jewish guy, was a professional conflict mediator, traveled to the middle east to work with kids from both “sides”. He never told the Palestinian kids he was Jewish, afraid they would not trust him. Kids from both sides just wanted to have a chance at a life without war. Palestine had NO leadership, Afafat was a thief in my mind, died with MILLIONS in his bank account. Abbas wants to make a difference but he deals with the stink of Hamas haging over him in the West Bank. Very complicated. On an aside, I was against the Iraq war from the beginning.
