All the geeks and geekesses know that October 22 is the big day.  Those who are normal are probably shrugging their shoulders and looking about.  What’s so special about October 22?  It is the day that Windows 7 comes out!

Besides thinking new software is way cool, many of us just never took to Vista.  Vista is a pretty software.  Your desktop looks pretty.  However, behind the scenes, Vista is awkward.  It asks too many questions.  It questions your every move.  It thinks it knows better than you do.  Many people returned to XP or never left it in the first place simply because of Vista’s drawbacks.

Unlike Win 95  and XP, Vista was just never intuitive.  It somehow managed to break that natural linear thinking so many of us had gotten used to with Win 95 and XP.  I find myself dumping money into my hold workhorse XP laptop because I still haven’t gotten used to Vista.  It just isn’t natural.  I have had almost 2 years  to get used to it.  It isn’t going to happen.

So tomorrow is Nirvana for all of us geeks and geekesses.  The reviews make me sort of nervous.  I haven’t seen anyone swoon yet.  I want to see swooning!  I want this to be the best and most beautiful operating system ever!  Who is getting it?  Who is upgrading?  Who is getting a new system?  Who simply doesn’t care?  Does anyone out there like Vista?

I switched to Linux from Windoze years ago and never looked back. I keep Windo$e around just so the kids have compatible software with school. 😉

Not bashing Windblows though. It computerized the world’s workforce!

  2. I never get stuff when it first comes out. Thankfully, that saved me from getting Vista, after hearing about all the problems. I’m an XP camper. Enjoy your happy dance, M-H.

  3. Slowpoke Rodriguez

    I hear it’s vista regurgitated.

  4. Rick Bentley

    I like Vista.

Those questions it asks you when you undertake certain operations are security-related. It is much less likely that you’ll be manipulated by spyware or viruses when you run Vista.

  5. Second-Alamo

Not for Mac users. We already experience nirvana!

    >>>I hear it’s vista regurgitated.

Reviews seem to be fairly consistent. It’s better than XP and A LOT better than Vista. Basically it’s what Vista should’ve been. 🙂

  7. Moon-howler

Ring, that’s what I am hearing and I hope it is true.

2nd, you sound like my brother and stepson. Apple people all the way! I started off Apple but I fried a mother board. It cost me as much to replace it as it did for me to get a PC, so…I crossed over to the dark side and never looked back. Apple stock is great to own though.

Wasn’t it Opinion who was waiting just like I am? I just hope the pre-order went through!!

That’s what I was hearing early on….but lately I’ve been hearing that it’s gained weight toward the end. I hope not. I still like XP (when I have to use Windows). I never thought much of Vista. I’ve been Mac for a while now.

A lightning strike caused a surge that fried the motherboard of one of my Windows machines. I bought a new motherboard, installed it and attempted to restore the system from the restore DVDs that came with the system. Windows wouldn’t allow it, basically accusing me of installing my copy of Windows on more than one machine. I called Microsoft and they said I had to pay $$$ for another copy of XP.

I switched to Linux at that point.

    >>> so…I crossed over to the dark side and never looked back.

The ‘dark side’? Now where have I seen that before? 😉 [just playin’]

    Off topic:

It’s almost 9:00 p.m….is everyone watching Latino in America on CNN?

  12. Sorry I missed it. Just got back from the town hall meeting on econ dev at GMU-PW. Corey Stewart announced that a partnership between GMU and Georgetown University is going to bring a medical campus to PW in addition to the current life sciences.

  13. Moon-howler

LOL Rang, re dark side. Well, what can I say. That is what my brother and stepson accused me of. I have never had a lightning strike get me, thank goodness. However, when I did it, it was bad hands–a long time ago– Like 1996. I shouldn’t have put my bad hands in the machine. Is linux more untilitarian than windows? I have never used it.

Apple has been so sweet this week. Wonderful earnings report. I get my apple thrills through the stocks, not the machines. I would switch to iphone in heartbeat, once Verizon gets the contract.

  14. I just realized I’m outnumbered in an Apple house! Both my husband and son are Apple while I’m doing Windows.

Sorry to veer OT again, but the clips from the L in A documentary on cnn.com are great. I’ll watch it tomorrow night.

  15. Moon-howler

Ring, thanks for the link. Reading it now. This will have to go slowly. Not even sure Microsoft got my order. I did it last summer.

  16. Moon-howler

Firedancer, nope. Criminal Minds. I guess it will be repeated.

  17. @CindyB
    Cool! Any idea when?

As far as Vista, I like the Word templates and the desktop publishing toys. Other than that, it is a pain in the arse.

  18. Pinko, my understanding is that both schools signed a joint educational initiative in Sept. called “George Squared” that starts in Fall 2010 at GMU-PW, with classes taught by professors from both Georgetown and GMU. Students can earn a 24-credit Joint Certificate for Advanced Biomedical Science or a 40-credit Special Master’s Program that will prep students for careers in bioscience or pre-med.

I don’t know the timeline of the medical school, but the first steps are being taken now.

There’s a huge 100-booth Connections Expo at the Freedom Center tomorrow from 4 to 7 pm, hosted by the PWC-GM Chamber of Commerce. Free admission — see what else is happening. In Chairman’s Stewart’s words, Prince William County is the “fulcrum” for all that is going to be happening in the region. Exciting times!

  19. Moon-howler

Rick, I agree with the security aspects of Vista. It just is awkward to me. It is pretty, for sure. I will have to see how much is involved with an install.

I will be upgrading vista on one computer. I won’t replace xp. XP just thinks like I do. Vista doesn’t layer to suit me.

Is anyone upgrading tomorrow? If yes, will you give us an update?

  20. Starryflights

Vista is just fine. If you have it, there’s no need to pay for an upgrade as it’s not that much better, according to the reviews I’ve read. But if they offer it for free to existing Vista users, take it.

  21. Opinion

    I’m thinking Snow Leopard…

  22. Moon-howler

    What is snow leopard?

I keep looking in my mailbox and my pre order has not been released yet. Grrrrrr

Starry, I have read that it fixes all those things that people don’t like with vista. I am only doing it on one machine. I ordered last summer and it was a pretty cheap deal. $50.

Of course, it isn’t cheaper if I don’t ever get it.

  23. Moon-howler

I lied. It has arrived. I guess 9 am was the magic time from the microsoft store.

  24. @CindyB
Cindy that is AWESOME! I would love to see PWC become a hub for higher education. Between NOVA, GMU and now Georgetown, we could really become not only a center for science and technology, but one for education. And my experience has been once an area gets the educational community really thriving, cultural interests increase as well (as we know from the upcoming construction of the Arts Center). Look at all the history and nature this place can offer students and faculty! What a great place to work and study!

If you take a look at successful universities, you will see some things they have in common besides obviously great programs, staff and faculty–they offer a wider community that continues to capture the interests of students and employees. This means increased revenue without the need to build a gazillion homes and strip malls. It means construction is centralized, leaving the rest of the county for preservation without sacrificing income.

Now we need dorms and faculty housing out there. Get them in and get them to stay.

    Thanks for the update.

  25. Moon-Howler

Well, has anyone tried it, installed it, used it? Inquiring minds want to know. I haven’t done anything with mine yet. New software fear.

Since I am going from vista to 7, I have read I do not have to do a clean install, just an upgrade. Am I wrong?

  26. Moon-howler

Well, thanks for the help, gang. NOT!!

I got it installed and I like it a great deal. I did have to uninstall my virus protection, then I had to start over.

But Windows 7 is way cool and seems to have gotten rid of much I didn’t like about Vista.

  27. Sorry, MH! I got off on a tangent…per usual.

Sounds like YOU will have to tell everyone what Windows 7 is all about!
