By JULIE CARR SMYTH – Associated Press | AP – 19 mins – Mon, Nov 7, 2011See latest photos »COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The state’s new collective bargaining law was defeated Tuesday after an expensive union-backed campaign that pitted firefighters, police officers and teachers against the Republican establishment.
In a political blow to GOP Gov. John Kasich, voters handily rejected the law, which would have limited the bargaining abilities of 350,000 unionized public workers. With nearly 95 percent of the votes counted late Tuesday, about 61 percent were to reject the law.
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, among the many union leaders who hailed the outcome, said victory was achieved among Democrats and Republicans in urban and rural counties.
“Ohio sent a message to every politician out there: Go in and make war on your employees rather than make jobs with your employees, and you do so at your own peril,” he said.
This was a big, big victory for middle class Americans, unions, the OWS movement, Democrats and President Obama, who campaigned against the law. Romney and other Repugs supported the law.
Ohio is one of those bellweather states that will play a deciding role in next year’s Presidential election. No doubt about it, this bodes well for President Obama’s chances next year and does not bode well for the Repugs.
Big Victory for Obama Administration on Health Care Today
By Ariane de Vogue | ABC News – 10 hrs ago
In a victory for the Obama administration, the D.C. Court of Appeals has upheld the constitutionality of a key provision of the health care law.
The 2-1 decision is sure to embolden the Obama administration because it was written by Laurence H. Silberman, a Ronald Reagan appointee, who is considered one of the leading conservative jurists on the bench.
At issue before the three-judge panel was the individual mandate, a central provision of the Affordable Care Act, which requires individuals to buy health insurance by 2014 or pay a penalty.
“The right to be free from federal regulation is not absolute, and yields to the imperative that Congress be free to forge national solutions to national problems, no matter how local – or seemingly passive – their individual origins,” Silberman wrote.
Hmmm….if one refuses to be forced to buy insurance because the gov’t says so…they will fine you. If you refuse to pay the fine….they will arrest you. And give you free health care. And if you resist arrest, they will kill you….thus saving the government money.
I think Ohio deserves everything they get as a result of their vote. Wait ’till the cuts hit ’em!! The voters spoke, and now they should reap their rewards! Pink slips for everyone!!
cargo – do you think personal responsibility is for someone to have no insurance? And they, when they become seriously ill, they become wards of the state, and live off the taxpayers back, without ever contributing to the system. I am not thrilled with the mandate either – but it is the only way to be fair to the private insurers which drives out healthcare system today. The mandate – a Republican Idea.
Slowpoke, the people of Ohio have spoken, and you need to respect that.
The Ohio Repugs were exaggerating Ohio’s budget crisis in order to advance their anti-union agenda. Stripping away union rights had nothing to do with the budget, and the people of Ohio knew it.
Author of tough Arizona immigration law loses recall election

(CNN) — The state senator who wrote Arizona’s controversial immigration law conceded defeat Tuesday night in a recall election widely seen as a referendum on tough measures against illegal immigrants.
“I want to thank those people who have stood by me,” said Russell Pearce, who represented a suburban Phoenix district. “It doesn’t look like the numbers are going my direction … and I’m OK with that.”
The recall petition pitted him against fellow Republican Jerry Lewis, who led with 53.4% of the vote with all precincts reporting. Pearce got 45.3%, election officials said.
Those who practice this type of divisional politics are going to be held accountable at the ballot boxes.
Overall, this, the union law overturned, and the personhood amendment being defeated – no doubt that yesterday’s results were a great day for the United States of America.
Important statement out of this editorial:
Alternatively, McDonnell may have trouble renewing the cordial relations he has enjoyed with Democratic senators now that he has spent more than $3.6 million attempting to oust them.
@Pat.Herve
And it was a bad idea. I don’t support ideas because their Republican. They make horrible decisions too.
Furthermore, its already been shown that the ACR does not stop insurance costs from rising. It’s actually making the insurance more expensive. ACR does not hold down costs, either in the private sector or in public spending.
Also, if the gov’t can mandate that we buy this, what next will it mandate that we buy for our “own good?”
The citizenry have determined that no one be turned away from emergency rooms. Now we live with that. Many can’t afford insurance, especially since we’ve tied health insurance to employment. And THAT was because of gov’t interference too. Since the gov’t provides welfare, food stamps, etc, nothing prevents the gov’t from starting hospitals and clinics to provide care to the poor that do not have insurance. Of course that will cost money….because free stuff is the most expensive stuff of all.
@Starryflights
What lies and paranoia? What happens if you stand on principle and refuse to pay the fine at all? Ever? Will they arrest you? What happens when you resist arrest? And now the gov’t is lying and trying to call it a tax. What happens when you don’t pay taxes, Starry? How does the IRS treat you? What happened to Randy Weaver when he refused to pay taxes?
Its about standing up for your principles.
There are people willing to do that.

Another one for the W column

So they have to kill you to keep you healthy……
Stop with the lies and paranoia, cargo. Nobody’s going to kill anybody.
I think Ohio deserves everything they get as a result of their vote. Wait ’till the cuts hit ’em!! The voters spoke, and now they should reap their rewards! Pink slips for everyone!!
The news at the state level is sure nothing to crow about. 20/20 split in VA senate with Bolling (R) as a tie breaker.
We will probably end up with a personhood amendment the way things are going.
Several of the races were VERY close.

Sadly you are correct, Big Dog.

Some will. Some resist. Randy Weaver’s wife was shot while holding a baby.
But let’s leave it that some will be arrested. Great. They’re alive. And getting free health care.
All because they believe in the Constitution.
