Ewwwwww, Rick. Just Ewwwwwww. He sounds like a commercial for Westboro Baptist Church.
WHAT is he talking about? Gays in the military has what to do with Christmas? What children aren’t allowed to celebrate Christmas? Why is President Obama being blamed for any of this?
Even Rick Perry’s staff was divided over this political ad. So is it the bad taste ad of the political season?
How about Ron Paul’s ad? Pretty clever. I liked the shih tzu dog part.
Someone needs to tell Rick Perry that victim mentality just isn’t very presidential. This ‘war on Christmas’ BS is just that. I have never felt that I can’t celebrate Christmas.
Christians (among whom this humble sinner numbers himself) absolutely thrive in this country. What demographic is this ad trying to reach? How completely out of touch does one have to be for this to resonate at the ballot box?
I think this should be preserved for posterity as a political ad encapsulating everything that is wrong with America, everything that is wrong with American politics, everything that is wrong with the Republican Party, at the start of the 21st Century. Kids can go to the Smithsonian in 100 years and say: “Wow, that’s where we lost it completely.”
When did “Christian” become a religious sect?
I know about Lutherans, Baptists, Anabaptists, Brethren, Methodists, Catholics (of various types), Unity, Unitarians, Calvinists, Episcopalians, Anglicans, Quakers, Mormons, etc.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Christian_denominations
I don’t see “Christian” in there. And as a Catholic….am I included in THEIR definition of Christian or am I the same as a Mormon to them…still an evil papist cultist.
Because we know that all of them are evil heretics doomed to the fires unless they REPENT and rejoin the Holy Mother Church.
At least that’s what I tell them when I’m asked if I’ve been saved and should join THEIR church on a Saturday morning… at my front door……
Alas, CS, I think a number of people in the target demographic of this advert probably do consider Roman Catholicism a “cult”, just as they consider Mormonism a “cult”, albeit for different underlying reasons in each case.
One of the key questions that one gets (impertinently in most cases) from certain denominational adherents is some variant of “have you been born again?” If the answer is yes, the follow-up often is: “Then you know the date and time of your acceptance of Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour.” For Roman Catholics (and a number of Protestant Christians, also) that simply does not compute, given the standard interpretation of the effects of the sacraments, including infant baptism. I have heard candidates confronted in person at political events with this question of re-birth. I’m sure Rick Perry has an answer and can nail the time and date with a push pin on a calendar. A lot of very conscientious Christians have kept the faith since birth to the best of their mortal, imperfect ability, and cannot answer that question with Swiss watch precision.
So,back to the Perry ad: to what demographic in the electorate is this pitched, and are there enough of that group to make a difference in Iowa or elsewhere? What effect will this ad have when re-played or referred to by opponents, either in primaries or in a general election context?
The left decries “victim mentality”. That’s funny.
Pokie, you are the only person who calls me ‘the left.’ My poor parents would be rolling over in their graves.
Scout, thanks for pointing out that the ‘born again’ question does not compute with many Christians and that yes, we still are Christians. I don’t like the new exclusivity that only people who do can answer that question to suit others are to be considered Christians.
Too many “born agains” whom I’ve met can point to the exact day of their conversion only because another, usually preceding, day is burned in their minds as well – the date their spouse threatened to leave them, the day they woke up after an all night binge, or the date they escaped having to go to jail, etc. These have also been the most mean spirited “born again”people whom I’ve met. Odd how that works. Other people have simply been good Christians all along.
I am not going to post this video on the blog but I will link it. It is a Jesus response to Rick Perry’s ad. I don’t have a problem with it but some folks might.

I just want to throw up. Would that be considered rude Moon?
Exactly what is Obama’s war on Christianity again? Being a heathen Jew I often get confused. I know Perry isn’t talking to me so I was just wondering.
If I were a republican I would be horrifed and embarrassed by such a pathetic attempt to give red bloody meat to the base. I use to think Perry was decent, now I think he’s a total jerk and you know what, not so decent.

@Cato the Elder
That was PRICELESS 😉
The fact you’d be “horrified” and “embarrassed” by “pathetic” behavior is why no one would ever accuse you of being a Republican.
@Morris Davis 😉
People are really having fun with the Parry ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=giHKSjbOXYM
Too funny.
You know, this is the most misguided guy. I don’t even dislike him. He has horrible handlers. I would love to drink with him.

Oh man. Cato is keeping me in good spirits tonight. This ad has to win some sort of dubious prize as one of the most misguided political ads of all time.
Yeah, this was worse than Huckabee using the cross as a backdrop then trying to say it was a window pane or bookshelf or some such.
