Totally disgusted and grossed out here….Newt is calling himself the Virginia Candidate.  Newt is not a Virginian.  I don’t know what he is but he isn’t a Virginian.  My people would have probably called him a scalawag.

Unfortunately, legally Newt is a Virginian.  He lives in McLean and is registered to vote there.  Those with a discerning eye are watching Gingrich very closely to see if he changes his voter registration.  If he does, that is an indicator that if selected to be the Republican candidate, he would chose Governor  Bob McDonnell as his running mate.   The 12th amendment prohibits electoral college members from casting a vote for 2 candidates from the same state.  Since McDonnell is the current governor of Virginia, it isn’t likely that he would change his voter registration.  Newt would have to be the one.  Bush and Cheney ran into the same problem.

Meanwhile, former Virginia Democratic Committee chair Paul Goldman is the attorney assisting Gingrich in his fight to get on the Virginia ballot for the March 6 primary.   Maybe Gingrich is so mad at Virginia he will just move.  Ya think?

13 Thoughts to “Newt, the Virginia Candidate”

  1. Clinton S. Long

    Interesting factoid about the 12th Amendment.

    Actually, I may be wrong but I think the 12th says that if both President-elect and Vice President-Elect are from the same state then (in this case, Virginia), Virginia members of the Electoral College cannot vote for both of them. It wouldn’t apply to another other electors.

    If it is close, it becomes an issue of perhaps having a President and Vice President from different parties. The election would have to be very close (like Bush/Cheney) There are about 13 electors from Virginia.

    1. I think you are right, Clinton. I didnt explain it in much detail or very well.

  2. Cargosquid

    If he does become the candidate, then…McDonnell can’t be VP.

    But…he’s not Virginia’s candidate unless he gets on the ballot.

    Apparently he WASN’T ready for the big time.

  3. marinm

    Wait. When people see him on tv they think of Virginia?

    *cry*

    @marinm
    Apparently not because I didn’t know he was a resident either. This is news to me.

    I wouldn’t worry about it…..Hawaii has to deal with THEIR shame….. 😉

    @Cargosquid

    Sir, you know how to pick up a persons spirits!

    Oh. Good news today. Our medical insurance paid out on our hospital bills. So, instead of a 10K+ payment (my share is 10% of the total so the bill from PWH was over 100K) I think my share is down to $1300. Not bad for a delivery x2, NICU stay of 12 days and the preggers better half being confined for a month.

    Today is turning out to be a good day.

  6. @Cargosquid

    That’s why people are expecting Gingrich to change his voter registration. You know—take an apt in Maryland or something if he looks like he will get the nomination.

    He can very well be the Virginia candidate (gag) even if he isn’t in the VA primary if he hits homeruns in all the other states. If he wants McDonnell, he has to move that voter registration.

  7. @marinm

    marin, I am glad your fees are manageable. You are luckier than many folks. How did you get your share down to only $1300?

  8. Marin and Cargo,

    Gingrich lives in McLean. Where else would he be registered to vote?

    His fight with Virginia only deals with the primary. He can certainly get on the general ballot I would think. He just has to play by the rules.

  9. marinm

    No objection to him playing by the rules. I object to him being associated with Virginia. I don’t want people thinking Virginia == Newt.

    1. Earth rotation problem alert!!!!!! Marin and I are in total agreement about not wanting Newt associated with Virginia.

    The story that will not die.

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1211/70866.html

    Paul Goldman, a Richmond lawyer who is a former Virginia Democratic party chairman, is helping represent a conservative group in challenging Newt Gingrich’s disqualification from the Old Dominion ballot on March 6, Super Tuesday.

    Bill Pascoe, executive vice president of Citizens for the Republic, said: “We are teaming up with former Virginia Democratic Party Chairman Paul Goldman to make sure the voters of the Commonwealth have a fair and transparent presidential primary process.

    1. It won’t die because it is true. Apparently Goldman doesn’t have a horse in the race so he will appear impartial.
