106 Thoughts to “Open Thread………………………………………….Thursday, December 29”

    On #56 I side more with MH. There are many jobs that don’t require having read Moby Dick or knowing that things are made out of ‘elements’.

    Heck, my job doesn’t require a high school diploma. The actual job position mentions a college degree is desired but not required.

    I personally think the article would’ve been better to present the idea of more vocation education (like medical or law school! hehe) and the Work Oppotunity Tax Credit (tax credit for hiring disabled, disadvantaged, etc workers)

  2. Ray Beverage

    On #56, I have the EEOC letter and still sorting through their intent. My initial reaction is there is an effort to expand beyond the specialized industries which only hire the disabled, and bring these folks into the mainstream.

    There are many specialized industries or organizations such as National Industries for the Blind (NIB) and National Industries for the Handicapped (NISH). Those of us involved with Federal Government procurement know those were mandated suppliers (think those standard ball point pens, wall clocks, and a host of other things). Locally, we have Didlake who provide both structured and independent (meaning the person can go to a work site without Didlake supervision).

    There has been a major effort over the last decade for less institutional and more community living and employment. I can see where a benefit to removing the “must have HS diploma” for a lot of jobs will benefit not only the disabled, but a host of other individuals. There are a lot of jobs requiring a set of functional skills that have no relevance to what is learned in school.

    Cue up Paul Simon’s “Kodachrome” and sing along…”when I think back to all the crap I learned in high school; it’s a wonder I can think at all. And though my lack of education hasn’t hurt me none, I can read the writing on the walls”

  3. @marinm

    Marin, I am very much a supporter of vocational education. I think it is just wrong that we don’t provide young people with apprentist training especially training that helps in that locality. Not every young person needs to go to college to have a fulfilling career. College costs too much right now to be an American goal. Furthermore, many people getting out of college have what 30 years ago was equivalent to a high school education.

    People in the autobody program don’t need to know Shakespeare. They do need to know metrics. They can take Shakespeare if they want but it shouldn’t be a requirement for graduation.

    There would be a lot more high school graduates if kids could take courses that apply to life skills. In a perfect world, wouldn’t it be wonder if everyone had a thirst for knowledge. The world isn’t perfect.

    I cause more trouble, I think.

    Thankfully, she just needs some dedicated exercises on her knees. So, since I’ll be starting a karate class for college PE, we’ll both be doing stretching everyday.

    Well, I will. She’ll be laughing too hard watching me huff and puff and groan…..

    1. Cargo, did you hear a strange muffled group sound coming down from your north? Sort of a chuckling sound??????

      You kids sure have a lot more options than I did, back in the day…when I went barefoot to class in the snow from the dorm that was five miles away…. :mrgreen:

  5. Big Dog

    M-H, The bears are on a run! A great way to start 2012!

    1. @Big Dog

      Woof Woof! I am so happy that the bulls have the bears on the run. Go Bulls Go. Great way to start the first day of the new year!!!

  6. Cargosquid

    Does anybody else see the irony of President Obama using a signing statement, which he promised to never use, to promise to not hold American citizens indefinitely without trial, while affirming that he has the power to round up American citizens and hold them without trial, which he also promised to get rid of?

    1. NO. I figure it happens a lot and I just don’t know about it. It sure didn’t start with President Obama.

  7. Cargosquid

    hit submit too soon…

    Know what sign statement would make a BETTER statement….a VETO.

  8. marinm

    @Cargosquid

    Karate is the Dane Cook of Martial Arts..

    WRT NDAA. HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I guess holding American citizens without trial and assasinations are a progressive talking point now.

    @Moon-howler

    The cost of college will not come down. Never will. There is really no incentive for it to get cheaper.

    As far as what constitutes a high school graduate I of course leave that up to the counties and state.

  9. Cargosquid

    @marinm
    Concerning karate…huh?

    1) Who is Dane Cook?
    2) Why is Karate the Dane Cook of martial arts?

    I know…its not funny if you have to explain…. but I’m missing this one completely.

    I’m taking Karate (unknown style) because Akido is too hard on my knees and neck. Akido….the art of blending…..with the mat.

    I need a reason to exercise. So…karate.

  10. Big Dog

    Go Wall Street Bulls! Chase the bears back to their dens of darkness!

  11. marinm

    @Cargosquid

    Cyril: Will I get to learn karate?
    Archer: Karate?! The Dane Cook of martial arts?! No. ISIS agents use Krav Maga. We got an ex-Mossad guy who comes in on Thursdays.

    It’s a quote from a show called Archer on FX. If you haven’t seen it already – watch it. But, not very kid friendly.

    FWIW, Dane Cook is a comedian. He’s gotten a lot of bad press for his recycled and ‘tired’ jokes. He also tends to imitate other comedians.

    I know. Pop culture. But, its the only kind of culture I have!

    1. I got an F in pop culture.

  12. Cargosquid

    @marinm
    Man, if they only had a Krav Maga school around here. I’d take it in a heart beat.

    The irony is that I’d probably be the only Krav Maga student in my wife’s extended family of cousins….all Jewish.

    So….Iran has stated that if the carrier USS Stennis comes back through the Straits of Hormuz and returns to the Persian Gulf, they will “take action.” Of course, we always respect national waters and any country’s declared war games.

    http://af.reuters.com/article/energyOilNews/idAFL6E8C30GG20120103
    “Iran will not repeat its warning … the enemy’s carrier has been moved to the Sea of Oman because of our drill. I recommend and emphasise to the American carrier not to return to the Persian Gulf,” Salehi told IRNA.

    “I advise, recommend and warn them (the Americans) over the return of this carrier to the Persian Gulf because we are not in the habit of warning more than once,” the semi-official Fars news agency quoted Salehi as saying.

    So, that seems like they are actually demanding that we react. Part me says that we should have the Stennis do a U turn and hang out in the Persian Gulf. Another says to ignore them like the gnats that they are.

    The biggest part of me wants the Navy to reactivate the battleships and park them in the Straits of Hormuz, put a couple of carrier groups in the Gulf of Oman, activate the BUFFS on Diego Garcia, and put a few hundred Tomahawk SLAMs in Bahrain, and then have the President call up Iran and say quietly, “Bring it.” ……”Bitch.” and then hang up.

    (all uses of the description of a female dog are for dramatic effect only. That…and the dog reference makes it DOUBLY insulting to those medieval, terrorist, misogynistic, goat-loving, nut jobs. Of course, the above description is not intended for the Iranian PEOPLE oppressed by said thugs.)

    But..that’s just me. What should we do……what to do……hmmm?

    1. @Cargo, not saying it is the right thing to do …. but you just described a good military fantasy.

  14. Pat.Herve

    I wonder if Newt can get on the Virginia Primary ballot, will he support the oath, and the potential nominee if it is not him.

  15. Cargosquid

    I just figured out whats missing this year!

    http://www.leasticoulddo.com/comic/20120102

    Where’s my flying car, darn it!

  16. Is it just me or I am being unreasonable? It’s 2012. Why isn’t the schedule up for BOCS meetings for 2012?

    Maybe I am just looking in the wrong place. It just seems to me that the schedule should have been post quite a while ago. Why are we operating like we live in a one horse town?

    When is the first meeting of the year?

  17. Happy birthday, Elena! Long live 29!!!!

  18. George S. Harris

    Happy Birthday Elena. May you have many, many more.

  19. George S. Harris

    While the USS Stennis is not returning to the Gulf, I understand the USS Abraham Lincoln and perhaps the USS Carl Vinson are on the way to the Gulf.

    Imagine having this baby parked in your front yard.

    Displacement: 100,000 long tons (110,000 short tons)
    Length: Overall: 1,092 feet (332.8 m)
    Waterline: 1,040 feet (317.0 m)
    Beam: Overall: 252 ft (76.8 m)
    Waterline: 134 ft (40.8 m)

    @Cargosquid
    I agree with MH–there are a lot of jobs that don’t require a HS diploma. Why shouldn’t folks who can’t get one for whatever reason have an opportunity to be hired? However, just to be polemic, a diploma or a GED certificate is a mark of completing a task. I am not a teacher but from conversations with my daughter who is, I am reasonable convinced that not all students in a classroom need to be there–students with severe learning disabilities are simply passed along until they come out at the other end with a piece of paper. Should that person, who has perhaps a second or third grade learning capacity, be able to displace a person who completes high school without relying on the ADA to get through? Somehow I don’t think so.

  21. Cargosquid

    See, all those comments about the ADA and HS diplomas are why I brought it up.

    I don’t know ALL of the answers. I only know MOST of the answers. 😉 I agree with you George. I also feel that businesses should not be penalized because they put out what THEY feel is necessary for the job just because the EEOC, which has the force of law enforcement, says that they should.

    1. Why is he doing this!!! @Lafayette. Why does he think he can run against Kaine? He has to beat out George Allen first. No mention of that. 🙄

  22. Lafayette

    @Moon-howler
    Beats me…I’m hoping his friend Mom will elaborate for us.
    There’s no way he take out Allen….get real man.

    1. I hope Kaine can take out Allen. The rest is not my problem. I figure I get Sideshow Bob no matter what happens. I just looked at HB #1. He’s a tricky one. He brings a new dimension to the term whittling away at rights.

  23. Lafayette

    There’s no way he *can* take out Allen….get real man.
    P.S. I don’t think we’ll have to worry about getting another new delegate anytime soon. Welcome, to the 13th! 👿

  24. Mom

    “There’s no way he *can* take out Allen….get real man.”

    Don’t overestimate Allen’s appeal or underestimate Del. Bob

    “MOM!!!! Please, don’t ask for an extra sticker for me.”

    Hope you have comfortable shoes and a warm jacket for when you are out collecting signatures.

  25. Lafayette

    @Mom
    “Don’t overestimate Allen’s appeal or underestimate Del. Bob”
    I just don’t see either of them as having appeal.

    “Hope you have comfortable shoes and a warm jacket for when you are out collecting signatures”
    Santa didn’t bring me either. You’re on your own. I don’t think I’d be permitted to have a sticker anyways. I’d much rather have the “scotch deal” Moon got. BTW-That wasn’t an insult to your band, it was my humble opinion. 👿

  26. Cato the Elder

    Bob Marshall would crush Allen in a debate. It wouldn’t even be close.

    1. @Cato, perhaps but who cares. Why is it that debate is the standard for how others would govern? Is that a hold over from the 19th century and the Lincoln Douglas debates?

      What the media is calling debate isn’t even really debating. At the end of the day, people would end up with Marshall. Actually, I am not sure Marshall could wipe up the floor with Allen. Allen has a certain down home charming appeal. Marshall lacks charm and his tone is generally caustic when he gets wound up.

  27. Mom

    I’d much rather have the “scotch deal”

    No soup, err, Scotch for you.

  28. Mom

    “Bob Marshall would crush Allen in a debate. It wouldn’t even be close.”

    But it would be phenomenally entertaining in an Allen trainwreck sort of way.

  29. Cato the Elder

    @Moon-howler

    It’s like this – when I go to the circus I go to see lions and tigers, clowns not so much. I want my politicians to entertain me, and a Marshall/Allen debate would be entertaining.
