I believe I have been fairly opinionated about what went down on June  5 during the BOCS meeting.  I had a post up trumpeting my outrage.  I took it down because Elena wrote a post that included a little more county history and was more inclusive than my post.  My post was simply pure emotional anger.  I may take it out some day, but not this day.

That brings us back to what we aren’t going to do.  I know the blogs are all full of accusation and finger pointing at this person and that person, in particular, various supervisors.  There are stories of church money, special bricks, golden labels etc with these stories being quoted as definitive proof of wrong-doing on behalf of the some of the supervisors.

There is simply too much speculation going around for my tastes.  Elena and I will not get in to all of that and we have not accused anyone of monetary malfeasance.  I don’t think anyone is a crook nor have I accused anyone of crookdom.  I don’t know who did what, therefore, I am not going to speculate.  Basically, it really doesn’t matter.

The use of discretionary funds has been around as long as I can remember.  Everyone knew about them and every person has had an opportunity to address this issue.  Additionally, the supervisors have all had an opportunity to reform their use or to restructure how we handle office money and charity money.  Until Pete Candland drafted his resolution, I am unaware of any such legislation existing.

My disdain and rage centers around several issues:

  • 1.  a supervisor trying to punish another supervisor using a bag of dirty tricks and the others allowing it.
  • 2.  a disgruntled employee being given so much attention when she was a known trouble maker to start with.
  • 3,  the BOCS ramming policy resolutions down our throats before the public had a chance to see them, understand them, or even know what they were supposed to fix.  Mr. Candland had not even seen the amendments.
  • 4. The BOCS failed to consider carefully legislation they were passing.  Corey, in a self-described act of “rocket docket,”  failed the county by allowing legislation to go through, into law, that puts the county in jeopardy and once again makes us the laughing stock.

Corey’s rocket docket sounds more vulgar than legal.  What exactly does that mean?   All supervisors should have time to read and consider bills before voting on them.  Citizens should have at least a week to digest legislation and be provided a venue to give input.

Finally, I want to know the difference in Reese Collins as a campaign manager vs the previous Candland staffer who was also a campaign manager?  How about the assistant staffer who also worked on the campaign and called a local blogger when Elena showed up to vote?  What is so special about Collins that sets him apart from these other people?  I hope Collins sues the county.  It would serve Corey and Mr. Jenkins right.

Perhaps once I know that answer, I can take a stand that goes further than simply speaking against what I have outlined in items 1-4.  Until them, I refuse to call people thieves or make comments about people’s appearance/age/tenure etc.  There are plenty of other blogs running a side show so please do it there.

Even this old apostate has  several favorite Bible verses.  The first one is the most universal tennent of all the major religions–the Golden Rule.  Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.  If everyone practiced that one….there woul probably be no need for a blog.

We can fix problems without becoming mean as snakes.

While routing out corruption is admirable, I do not believe we live in a very corrupt county. I do believe we live in a county where people have perhaps served too long or are too comfortable and forgotten who they serve, which is the people. That said, I think none of this does anything to lift the image of Prince William County to the rest of the state or the nation. From the Washington Post articles, it now appears we are not only racist rednecks, we have corrupt politicians. Can’t we just stay out of the news?

    1. I don’t think we are more corrupt than other places. In fact, we probably aren’t as corrupt as some places. However, like you said, people have just gotten too comfortable. I think some government practices are ‘ethically challenged.’ The slam dunk rocket docket amendments were not ethical in my opinion. I also believe land development could use some lye soap all the way around. Power corrupts.

Love the lye soap suggestion! Although, it probably would not be powerful enough.
