The execution of Beltway sniper John Allen Muhammad is on schedule.

Today should be the last day on earth for John Allen Muhammad if all goes as planned.  He is set to die by lethal injection on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 at 9 pm.   John Muhammad masterminded a killing spree that lasted in the D.C area from October 3 to October 23, 2002 when he and his young accomplice Lee Boyd  Malvo were caught sleeping at a rest stop in Maryland.

Things might have all gone differently had  then Attorney General John Ashcroft not decided to hand Mohammd over to Virginia rather than Maryland where most of the killings took place.  Maryland had its death penalty on hold.  Virginia was known for taking care of  the death penalty quickly.

Commonwealth Attorney Paul Ebert had a good track record when it came to trying death penalty cases. And once again he did not let us down.

If there was ever a poster child for the death penalty, it is John Allen Muhammad.

UPDATE: 11/9/09  The US Supreme Court has denied Mohammad a stay of execution.  Unless Governor Kaine grants him one, the execution is scheduled to take place on Tuesday at 9 pm.

Good. Thanks for pointing this out.

  2. So Rick, was John Mohammad a terrorist? I say yes. Motive and sheer number of kill makes him one. But that is my opinion only.

  3. GainesvilleResident

I think he meets the definition of a terrorist too. For one thing, their stated goal was to terrorize the region, which they succeeded in doing. Let’s hope he gets it tomorrow night on schedule.

  4. There is some sort of story floating around that it was to cover up him murdering his wife, which he never got around to doing.

To that I say BS. He is a terrorist.

  5. GainesvilleResident

I remember that story too – but it made no sense. That’s a lot of murders just to cover up one other murder. Besides, in the case of the murder of a wife or ex-wife – the husband or former husband would be a prime suspect.

  6. Three justices voted against denying the stay: Sotomayer, Stevens and Ginsberg. I am assuming the other 6 voted to give him the big drip.

  7. Rick Bentley

I agree, he was clearly a terrorist. But this is all semantics. Arguably, every member of our “shock and awe” military is a terrorist.

Can Kaine grant him some kind of Amnesty, like the one he favors for illegal immigrants?

  8. Yes he can but I seriously doubt if he will. He has said publically that he sees nothing to make him consider a stay of execution as appropriate.

Is it 9:01 PM Tuesday night, yet? 😉
Is a crying shame that Lee Boyd Malvo wont be right beside of John Allen Mohammad.

  10. Gainesville Resident

Malvo is just lucky they passed that law that made him ineligible for the death penalty, and also that the jury at the time (when he still could have gotten the death penalty) decided to spare him.

The 3 justices seemed to say that not enough time had been allowed for the final appeals! Seems like there’s been more than enough time – how many years has it been since he was convicted? Fortunately those 3 were of the minority opinion.

    Six YEARS.

  12. Its enough time for the people of northern Virginia, in my humble opinion.

I didn’t realize so many people had been killed outside liquor stores. Why was that?

  13. Slowpoke Rodriguez

I haven’t read, is it lethal injection or does he get to “ride the lightning?”

  14. Lethal injection. ( I was hoping for lightning.

  15. GainesvilleResident

I was hoping for lightning too – but it’s his choice to make.

Indeed, there’s been more than enough time for appeals – I don’t know what the 3 dissenting supreme court justices were thinking (including Sotomayer). Just how much time do those 3 think we need to go through all the appeals in any death penalty case?

    Moon-howler :

There did seem to be some patterns in where they picked their targets. Who knows why, other than their location in shopping centers or something. My guess is once they found a place where they were successful, they picked similar kinds of places. Then again, who knows what went on in their crazy minds.

  17. GainesvilleResident

I wonder what he’s picking for his last meal…

  18. Lafayette

John Warner Powell inmate on death row from PWC had requested “ole sparky” be fired up, but his case is currently under appeal. There’s another one that should’ve have fried a while ago.

GR, I know what I would give him for his last dinner, and I can assure it would NOT be nice. 🙂

  19. GainesvilleResident

Lafayette – the death row inmates wouldn’t want me to be picking their last meal either!

  20. GainesvilleResident

I hope Powell gets it soon – glad to hear he picked old sparky! He’s long overdue, that’s for sure. An idiot too – for writing that letter to the prosecutor thinking he couldn’t be tried again for murder!

  21. Lafayette

Let’s not forget when he was here at our jail they had one person cook specifically for him. UFB, he was in jail you loose your freedoms, and that most certainly should include your special diet WANTS. Obviously, I have no problem with inmates have diets based on medical needs. BIG DIFF.

  22. GainesvilleResident

I did not know about the person cooking meals just for him at the jail. That is just crazy. Indeed, unless you have a medical restriction – you should eat what the rest of the jail population eats. Jail food isn’t supposed to be great – it is just supposed to meet your basic nutritional requirements.

    He’s dead! At 9:11 EST! 911, how poetic! 😉
