How much of a problem really is it? An ousted moderate Republican from Florida tells us what is really going on.
You might not like Al Sharpton but he is just the host. I have found he asks good questions and leads a good interview, regardless of how I feel about the Old Al.

And let’s not leave Jon Stewart out. He has a good take on this voter ID issue that has become so all-fired important. If anyone thinks it isn’t to restrict Democratic votes, I have a bridge for sale. Shades of a poll tax in some states…..
The repugs want to prevent people from opting for democrats by making unreasonable demands. They are undemocratic and unAmerican.
Does or does not voter fraud exist, and if it does, then come up with a simple way to prevent it. ID is about as simple as it can get. Come up with a better solution, and we’ll listen, otherwise you must be benefitting from the results of voter fraud and therefore are against any move to prevent it. Seems logical to me.
I want to prevent something that at least exists. I think the entire issue is a set up.
I have had a problem for more years than I want to admit to with the cavalier way voter registration has been operating the past few decades.
When I registered to vote, I had to prove who I was. I can’t remember how. I think a drivers license. But back then people were known to each other in communities.
I’ve sort of lost touch with what’s happening in Virginia. I know there’s a new law, but am I just to assume I get new credentials in the mail?
The problem seems so marginal that I can’t help but think that the impetus for these new ID procedures is to cull out votes. And it all seems to emanate from my side of the aisle, so I have to assume that the object is to suppress the Democratic vote. I’m not very proud of that and hope the margins are large enough in November (one way or the other) that we won’t face the crisis of suspecting these measures had some impact.
I think far more money, time and effort have been spent that the problem warrants.
There are some easy solutions also. SSA could start by notifying the state of a death. They have all the records of where/when/ etc. It would make it easier to remove dead people off the list of voter registration.
If I wanted to run a voter scheme, I would check the obits all the time. Get a list of names and addresses.
I have an opinion that this voter issue actually started in the last election when there were allegations that an organization was doing some questionable things about voter registration. Many people believe that if true and, if it was that easy, that there needs to be a tightening up of the requirements.
It appears to have morphed into a way to disenfranchise minorities, the poor, the elderly and students….at least in the minds of many. Perception is reality.
Perception IS NOT reality.
Either there is fraud or there is not. In fact, even if there is not…this would help prevent future problems.
This guy is OBVIOUSLY a disgruntled man. He’s mad that he was forced out. He has an agenda.
If there is no fraud, why is it that close elections are always found in favor of Democrats. In fact, some elections show that more voters voted than are registered. Florida DID FIND voter fraud, in which prohibited people were voting. This former GOP chairman came on the show purely to attack the FL GOP and discredit the programs to stop voter fraud. He’s probably taking things way out of context. OF COURSE, the GOP will try to stop groups like ACORN. They DID commit voter fraud. If that idiot did not have discussions about voter fraud its because, until recently, conservatives weren’t winning. HIS people were winning. The liberals Republicans in Florida have effectively switched sides.
If the laws are the same for all people, then there is no voter disenfranchisement.
What did you think of what Jon Stewart said, Cargo? I thought he was funny.
Perception is reality if that is what people think. Its THEIR reality.
I don’t think there is much voter fraud. According to one of the videos, 340 cases in 10 years have been prosecuted? That’s hardly something to spend this much time and money on. I would rather go after something else.
ACORN certainly isn’t the only group to register Mickey Mouse.
The Florida GOP has been fairly out of control lately. I expect he is irritated. Wouldn’t you be?I think you are claiming to know more than the former chairman. He was there.
So Cargo, what does the Virginia law say? What hoops must we jump through to vote now, if any.
Actually I only saw the “serious” vid. I figured that Jon was being a comedian on purpose.
I’m not claiming to know MORE than him. I’m claiming that he’s stating things in this light because he was forced out.
As for VA law…don’t know. I’ve always shown my ID when I vote.
I plan on telling them nothing this time. I want to write it down and hand it to them. There is absolutely no reason to have to shout your name to people
Do you support the force outs? I have seen it over the years and I don’t blame him for being angry. I expect they would have run Jeb Bush off too.
I think extremists took over Florida. Everyone I have ever talked to hates Gov. Scott.
Maybe you are a bad person to ask though.
Actually, I don’t care one way or the other. Florida’s business is their business. I think, however, when a candidate of one party decides that he’s going to support the other party just because he failed to get elected or lost in the primary…then that speaks volumes about that candidate’s character….. Yes… Crist said he was “non-affiliated.” But running as a third party against Rubio did nothing but draw GOP votes away from him. Thus, he helped the Democrats.
I learned something in the comment that “close elections are always found in favor of the Democrats.” Do we have some data on that? I know it’s anecdotal and ancient history, but wasn’t there a presidential election way back in 2000 that doesn’t fit that pattern?
How about Hayes/Tilden (as long as we’re in the Way Back Machine in any event)?
So – do I have to be worried that I haven’t received new voter credentials? Has anyone? Will I need them to vote?
Nixon/Humphrey was close as was Kennedy/Nixon.
When I was talking close…I was talking in the hundreds of votes…like the Franken election in which “missed” ballots were found in the trunk of a car.
Well voter suppression seems real to me when my 72 year old, wheelchair bound Mother is scared that she will not be able to vote in Florida because she does not have an ID. She has voted in every election since she turned 18.
That is voter suppression. What can you do or she do or money do to correct the problem?
Can she be taken to DVM? Can she vote absentee since she is already registered to vote. Who will be there to check her ID if she votes by mail?
