At age 108, Frank Buckle is now the last remaining World War I veteran. He attributed his longevity to exercise. He farmed up until he was 102. Now he feels he is too old. When the video was made, there were 4 other survivors.

    Thanks, Moon-howler. One of the last of those heroes who voluntered to go “over there” and suffered through one of the most tragic and deadly wars in history. Interestingly enough, he was working in the Philippines as a civilian in 1942 and was captured by the Japanese. He spent 1942-1945 in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. Fascinating life.

    You are kidding me. I sure didn’t know that. I had no clue that Mr. Buckle had been a POW. And to think he is 108.

    I know very little about WWI. I would be hard pressed to even give causes other than the obvious one.

    G-d bless him! Stopped farming at 102 because he was “too old”, I freakin’ love that!!!

    That guy was an absolute maniac about physical fitness. From what I’ve read, he lead the prisoners in calisthenics at that Japanese POW camp. Came out of that experience weighing somewheres in the neighborhood of 100 pounds. Probably saved his own life and the lives of some of those POW’s by keeping them active and exercising.

    He probably did save many a live. I also heard he was at the commemorative activities at Arlington yesterday. That is just amazing.

    Barbara Tuchman’s “The Guns of August” is a great book about the start of
    of WW I.
