Fox News should probably be careful about this kind of domestic terrorism also. They are right there on 6th Avenue in what appears to be a very open studio. Compare their “reporting” of this incident to the Washington Post account.
Family Research Council might not have been the only intended victim of last week’s Chick-Fil-A shooting. The alleged lone gunman, Floyd Lee Corkins Jr., only had a note in his pocket with the address on it. That address is shared with Traditional Values Coalition. According to the Washington Post:
Federal authorities have charged Corkins, 28, of Herndon, with assault with intent to kill while armed and interstate transportation of weapons.
A magistrate ordered him held Thursday for psychiatric evaluation and scheduled a detention hearing for this month. His attorney did not respond to interview requests Friday.
Documents filed by prosecutors in the District’s federal court say Corkins walked into the lobby of the Family Research Council, told security guard Leonardo R. Johnson, “I don’t like your politics,” and shot him in the arm during a scuffle. Police said Johnson subdued Corkins.
Court papers say Corkins was armed with a 9mm Sig Sauer handgun and had two magazines of ammunition and an additional 50 rounds in his backpack. Authorities also said he carried 15 sandwiches from Chick-fil-A.
The case is being treated as domestic terrorism, which it is. These 2 organizations have every right to exist and spew whatever hateful message they want to send out. Family Research Council has been particulary offensive back in the Dobson Days, when James Dobson and his wife told the rest of us on the radio how sinful we were. But, it is his right to do so and my right to turn off my radio, which I did. People should be able to have opinions, strong opinions, without expecting to be shot.
I can relate to this. I have done political work and have volunteered a place or two where I didn’t know if some nut case was going to shoot me. As it turned out, I just ended up getting knocked down twice with a few sprains. That’s a lot better than some crazed zealot coming at you with a gun. The problem is, you never know when that could happen. Family Research had security, so they must have had some indicators that might be a possibility. The Left has of crazies also, same as the right.
What causes these outliers (L or R) to go off the crazy wagon and decide to right matters themselves? Surely Chick dude doesn’t think FRC discovered vilifying gays? Surely he doesn’t think they are even the most vocal? Maybe they were most convenient. He spent some change buy 15 chicken sandwiches. Those aren’t cheap. We can’t control the crazies. What was he thinking? That’s the part I don’t get. how much “get even” could he inflict with a 9 mm before someone took him out?
This brings us full circle again to look at what we say and how we say it. All causes can use language, verbal and non-verbal, to trigger radically dangerous behavior from people who just aren’t stable. To a nut wing, a constant barrage of how screwed up his persona is might just be what pushes him over the edge. It seems that he was angry over what Mr. Cathy of Chick-Fil-A said about same sex marriage. That anger extended to Chick-Fil-A and then to one of the groups targeted. What was the Trojan Horse, in the shooter’s mind? A bag of Chick-Fil-A sandwiches. Totally sick. It’s something to consider every time you open your mouth….what sicko is listening or reading and what might the consequences be?
Fortunately the security guard did not receive life threatening injuries and should make a full recovery. Not everyone is that lucky. Corkins told security guard Leonardo R. Johnson he didn’t like his policies. Poor Johnson probably had no policies. He just came to work to do his job. The guard in the Holocaust Museum didn’t have the same happy ending.
No comments about a leftie shooting up the right? I sure had you all pegged wrong.
Activists can be their own worst enemy and an enemy to their cause.
We were just waiting for the news to break and a deep discussion in the press about his motivations. You know….like they do on all the other shooters. (crickets……)
Well, except for Major Nidal Hassan. They don’t mention his motivations at all.
I havent heard a bit of motivation for the orange haired freak other than he was probaby a schizo. (Aurora)
Cargo, you understand that these are ongoing cases? Why is “your side” always put upon over everything…like you are being picked on more than everyone else?
I have had this topic up over 24 hours. The crickets are from you guys, not me. There really isn’t much to say about it. Maybe enough has been said about Chick-fil-a. It Maybe too much has been said by everyone if this is how it ends up. Not blaming Chick. Blaming the “sides of chick.”
@Moon-howler
one of the news media immediately checked the names of James Holmes living in the area, and found the only one listed as a Tea Party member and “outed” him as the possible shooter on national TV.
Picked him with no other evidence other than his name.
“WE” guys don’t care about motivation, except for Major Nidal. What they do is criminal. I don’t care about his motivations. What IS there to say? He’s a nut that wanted to shoot someone because he disagreed with their politics. Its not because he’s associated with the left. He’s an evil person.
If motivations are the problem…do you want us to bring up how the leftist Southern Poverty Law Center demonized the Family Research Council and incited him? Because that’s what the left does with the TEA Party.
We’d rather not go down that road. Some might. I won’t. His actions are his own. I don’t care about “motivation.” I’m motivated to do lots of things that I won’t do because their wrong.
