Wow, does this read like a horrible deja vu nightmare?! The similarities are striking:
*Help Save…….Maryland
*Deny services to children by initating legal status confirmation (original resolution laguage written by Robert Duecaster with help of IRLI(FAIR) )
*Citizen concern about overcrowding/neighborhood issues
*Racial profiling concerns
*A Chief of Police who advocates community outreach to immigrant communities
Until now, the county has handled the influx with outreach classes in schools and community policing programs. Chic Hispanic restaurants flourish in downtown Frederick, and working-class Latinos have remained relatively invisible.
Suddenly, however, their presence is igniting a controversy that some fear could escalate into the kind of war over illegal immigration that has torn apart Prince William County. In the past month, the Frederick County sheriff has joined with federal authorities to identify and deport illegal immigrants, and county commissioners have proposed legislation to ban free translation of county business and require public schools to track down students who are in the United States illegally.
“The single biggest threat to our country is the immigration problem. We cannot continue to absorb this population or we will end up in collapse like a Third World country,” said Sheriff Chuck Jenkins, whose officers have identified 18 illegal immigrants in the past two weeks after traffic stops or other incidents. “We are not going out in a white van with a big net, but we are getting the criminal element of the illegal population out of Frederick County.”
Local opponents of the measures, including black, white and Hispanic residents, say the crackdown and other proposed actions smack of racism and political grandstanding.
Help Save Maryland, a rapidly growing citizens group that opposes illegal immigration, has supported the crackdown in group e-mails, radio interviews and newspaper columns. The coordinator of the Frederick chapter has accused opponents of “playing the race card.”
Frederick Police Chief Kim Dine, who is white, spent years in Washington’s Latino neighborhoods and is an advocate of police outreach in the community. County Board of Education Chairman Daryl Boffman, who is black, has worked to promote the kind of educational boosts for immigrant students that once helped him get ahead.

Park’d, there’s a letter to the editor in today’s MJM which may have been written by someone with whom I’m familiar. I say “may” because more than one Manassas resident shares that name. The person with whom I’m familiar has “Mexkiller”,”killin Mexicans”, “ONLY GOOD MEXICAN IS A DEAD MEXICAN” in his online profile. Tell me again how this speech isn’t incremental.
Good recommendations Censored. Have tried many of those and still do them weekly. I walk around my neighborhood and pick up trash all the time. I have asked the kids to stop and help and a 5 year old little black kid told me, “hey F you man” when I asked him not to play in the street. The little Hispanic kid with him was very nice and mannerly though and apologized. It’s a values and cultural thing and every race has their bad apples. My only solution is to move because getting people in this neighborhood to care about anything is a lost cause. When the market comes back, assuming it ever does, I will sell, move closer in and then go back to renting for a while. I have had it up to here with neighbors that don’t care and drive down my property values because of it.
I see the council meetings as an episode in frustration with the current pols that run things. I had thought of running for council myself but with the way things are now there is no way this city can maintain its charter viability this time next year unless real estate drastically increases in price between now and then which will not happen. If they are laying off people now and can barely make ends meet on inflated tax assessments then how are they going to make ends meet next year when they won’t be able to inflate the next assessments due to such drastic losses in home values for an entire year?? Nope, I don’t want the blame for someone else’s incompetence laid at my feet. Mark my words, by May 2009, MP will be looking to fold back into PWC unless things change soon and I don’t want my name associated with something like that.
I try to not let it get me down but these darn blogs always keep me informed and aware of the problems! Sometimes I wish I had taken the blue pill 😉
As I said before, my discussion on the Nazi holocaust vs illegal aliens is done. I recommend that you go pickup a history book and talk to a few survivors. I’ve said my piece and you know how I feel and how my family feels about the comparison.
Park’d, could you rent your home for enough to cover the mortgage payments? Would that enable you to move and then sell when the market improves?
Censored/Park’d,
That is exactly what I had to do to get out from an upside down situation when I owned a condo in Bull Run. Bought in 1990 and it steadily lost value until it turned around in the early 2000’s. Had we not rented it out when we bought in Warrenton, we would have been upside down about $35K on a $120K mortgage. This is not the first time this type of cycle has hit our area and it had nothing to do with illegals, it was the economy. And this time virtually ALL the buyers in our area of Manassas in 2005 and 2006 were Hispanic at the height of the insanity. Of course the list of foreclosures is going to be primarily Hispanic surnames…they were the vast majority of purchasers in Manassas and MP at the height of the housing boom.
I had to do that to get out of a townhouse community that had gone to the dogs about 30 years ago. It works. I listed mine with a realtor to rent the place and then I managed the property.
Anyone want to buy my townhouse?
: )
park’d I think you’d be better off blaming the politicians and go that route. It’s more effective and less detrimental than blaming “illegals.” Go after the people who let this happen if for no other reason than it’s easier to distinguish the bad guys from the good guys among politicians.
Park’d said “Marie: You just lost any credibility that you had by comparing this to Germany and Nazis. You need to go back to school and pick up a history book if you feel that way because you do every Jew in the world a disservice when you say that. Please think about your comment and how disrespectful it is to those of us who had family that endured the holocaust.”
I in no way would ever be disrespectful of those whose families endured the holocaust or to anyone who has had to live with hate and predjudice. I have spent many of my years in the fight for human rights. In addtion, you know nothing about my nationality or ethnicty. What I am saying is that these hate groups are moving people in a very dangerous direction. I am sure that back in the 30’s no one would have ever dreamed that more than 6 million Jews, Gypsies, and homosexuals would have been murdered by a madman and his followers. I bet it never cross their minds until they were swallowed up in the hate and darkness.
Local advocacy groups have resorted to hateful and dehumanizing stereotypes and outright bigotry to demonize immigrants. Many of these anti-immigrant groups increasingly are adopting the tactics and rhetoric of racist groups and moving it into the mainstream.
Under the guise of warning about the impact of illegal immigration, anti-immigrant groups like Help Save Manassas have reached for the playbook of hate groups. They have brought their hateful rhetoric into the mainstream. Anti-illegal immigration organizations promote virulent anti-Hispanic and anti-immigrant rhetoric. Some groups have fostered links with extremist groups.
The Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis were not the only ones who saw an opportunity in the national debate over immigration to sow the seeds of racism. Otherwise reasonable people have jumped on the bandwagon. Sensible people can disagree about the appropriate parameters for immigration reform but the debate has been tainted by the virulent anti-immigrant message employed by a handful of groups that have emerged and keep emerging in Virginia and now it seems in Maryland. The real victims in this are Hispanic-Americans and other immigrants who are being unfairly targeted, demeaned and stereotyped.
Here are a few things these groups espouse:
They describe immigrants as “third world invaders,” who come to America to destroy our heritage, “colonize” the country and attack our “way of life.” This charge by these grassroots movements in PWC, Manassas City and some other areas like Loudoun, Stafford, and Culpeper is used against immigrants.
They use terminology that describes immigrants as part of hordes that swarm over the border. This dehumanizing language has become common.
They portray immigrants as carriers of diseases like leprosy, tuberculosis, polio, malaria.
They depict immigrants as criminals, murderers, rapists, terrorists, and a danger to children and families.
They propagate conspiracy theories about an alleged secret “reconquista” plot by Mexican immigrants to create a “greater Mexico” by seizing seven states in the American Southwest that once belonged to Mexico.
So, what I am saying is if this path is followed and more and more jump on this bandwagon of hate and intolerance then we could find ourselves in a very, very dangerous place. I have seen the violent comments on bvbl and it quite frankly scares me.
Marie, I totally agree. Besides that “Neo-Nazi” is just a general term for the kind of behaviors and rhetoric you are describing. This is an old term used for people who support similar behavior demonstrated in WWII.
Marie, 7. May 2008, 12:46
Your post was factual and concise, good job! What I have been trying to reiterate but clearly was not getting across, thank you!
Hi Lucky D,
Yes, I agree with you completely than, Corey tried spinning it to a positive, but even the strident HSM members have since realized that it is not a stricter enforcement standard. I think that it was a fair modification, somewhere in the middle of both sides. I tend to think consensus is usually the best outcome for any new policy. Obviously there are exceptions to consensus, but in this case, I think it was fair. I believe the same about the immigration bill that was defeated, the very right hated it and the very left hated it, seems to me, somewhere in the middle is a good place to be.
Marie: many of those things you wrote about in your post are true. Some immigrants do bring disease, some are criminals (beyond the fact that they are even here mind you), some could potentially be terrorists, all of those hate groups like MWB and La Raza do talk about reconquista and have many members that subscribe to those beliefs. I’m not sure if you are saying you don’t believe these documented truths or what? The KKK doesn’t need to hype these things. Anyone who is capable of seeing and hearing and doing a little research already knows them to be true. You make it seem like anyone who is a member of HSM or HSH is a racist and must be out to rid the NOVA area from Hispanics. This is simply no more true than all illegal aliens are hardened criminals or that all La Raza and MWB members are for reconquista. Both sides have bad apples just as all races have bad apples. You can’t have your cake and eat it too so if you’re going to start labeling groups then make it fair.
The cultural clashes are real and are a problem. It doesn’t make someone a racist if they don’t like having their culture usurped overnight. Not everyone can be as enlightened as some of you on this blog and relish in the delight of being surrounded by so much multi-culturalism. That doesn’t make them a racist if they don’t enjoy that. I am as far from a racist as you can get and I don’t like it. I prefer to call myself old fashioned and a red-blooded American. I like applie pie and hot dogs, not bean burritos and chalupas. That doesn’t make me a racist or a bigot regardless of what you say. It makes me a proud American that is proud of his culture. Too much spin on both sides. Illegal is illegal and there is a reason that we have laws.
Park’d you have your opinion and I have mine. The points I made in my post are things that are as close as I can get to the direct quotes I have heard from HSM members in public forums. People, all people, have the right to be treated with dignity and respect. I do not hear much of that coming from anti-immigration groups.
This same rhetoric was spewed when the Italian, Polish, Irish, etc. immigrants first came to this country. It is just the same old hogwash.
My grandfather came here from Greece. He had no papers. He did not come through Ellis Island. He got a job and when Social Security was inacted, he got a SS card, opened his own business and I am the person who lives with that privilege. You live with the same privilege, because we are descendents of immigrants, unless your family were indigenous to the Americas.
That is about all I have to say on this matter today.
When people make racists remarks, one naturally assumes that they are racist. It is just human nature. Saying one isn’t a racist doesn’t necessarily make it so.
I rarely use the term. I don’t know what is in most people’s hearts. Besides, it is an overworked, tired word.
“Not everyone can be as enlightened as some of you on this blog and relish in the delight of being surrounded by so much multi-culturalism.”
It has nothing to do with being “enlightened.” It has to do with life: the planet is filled with different people who move from one section to another. No one is telling you to give up your hot dogs. But don’t ask anyone to give up their tacos either. Why people find this concept threatending is beyond me.
If you really can’t stand living in a multicultural world, form a commune of hot-dog eaters and have a blast! Isn’t that the great thing about the United States? You can DO that if you want to!
Elena, yes indeed, Stewart and his cronies spun it as a victory as did the anti resolution crowd.
Perhaps we disagree on the fact that the change was fair…and if you allow, I’ll share my opinion why I don’t think so. First, it did replace a mandate with officer’s discretion. This leaves our police officers hanging out to dry. Give them the cameras or pull back the resolution entirely. They are damned if they do, damed if they don’t. Second, they have been completely trained over a period of three months on the original resolution and according to what I hear and have learned, they have not been given any training or direction on the resolution change. Third, the BOCS took the easy way out. Our Police Department and Social Services have never been used as political fodder in my three decades living here in Prince William. Whether you agreed or disagreed with all the other CX or BOCS, they left politics out of the daily routine of both agencies. Now, unfortunately, they have not.
Finally, if our civil servants are unsure of which way to turn and they are left to their own devices ( and unlike others on this blog – I DO have faith in their capacity to do the right thing at the right time) and not supported by the BOCS, then we have failed as a citizenry to do the right thing ourselves. And that bothers me more than anything else. Just my opinion.
By the way, I prefer “Lucky Duck” as opposed to “Lucky D”.
Lucky Duck,
What you have said makes sense. I do think that most people on this blog, at least the regulars, have faith in our police here in PWC. What fixes this problem?
Luckyduck, 7. May 2008, 21:54
I do see your point, the problem is that the votes were not there to go all the way and return the immigration status check back to the jails, where we have our 287 G in place for ADC. I don’t necessarily disagree with your premise and I would take it a step further. The owness now is on Chief Deane, and it is clear that Greg and his minions are still gunning for him. He is the one who is in their line of site. The reality is that there needed to be some bump in the road for HSM and et al, I’ll take what I can get right now. I believe this affords citizens an opportunity to breathe, regroup, and decide how we want to deal with the bigger issue, which is change at the Federal level and the passage of comprehensive immigration reform based on facts and not fear mongering.
Oh, sorry if I offended by shortening your moniker. Probably a bad habit of mine, sometimes it’s just easier to shorten as opposed to type the who name out! Shortening to LD would definately not have worked, so I just stopped at D 🙂 No hard feelings?
“They propagate conspiracy theories about an alleged secret “reconquista” plot by Mexican immigrants to create a “greater Mexico” by seizing seven states in the American Southwest that once belonged to Mexico.”
This is fairly common knowledge…don’t you remember the Absolute vodka ad?
I don’t necessarily think that the immigrants in this area are out there plotting to overtake Texas..they are probably to busy trying to make a living. However, there are people who genuinely believe that part of the states belong to Mexico and they were there at the latest DC march. They also use rhetoric to inflame their own crowd to hatred.
Face it, anytime things are this polarized, there are two extreme sides, not just one.
This blog has people more in the middle than at the extreme but we should deny that the extreme on either side exists.
Hi Elena, I was teasing about the shortening of the name, sorry, bad joke. Lucky D does have some spunk to it.
You’re right in saying that this is a breather for the two opposing sides, but for the public employees, they are left in a bad spot. Which way do they do their jobs? The old way, new old way or this new way in which they have had no direction? Talk about a recipe for trouble – not from them, but from constant questioning of why they are doing what they are doing or why aren’t they doing what others think they should be doing.
What fixes it Moon Howler? One of two things…clear direction from the BOCS on what, exactly they want, as well has the direction and tone from those agency heads that need to guide their respective employees. The other possible answer is the removal of direct interference from the political side into daily activities of County agencies. This would have to be accomplished by either rebuke by the citizens to the BOCS for the meddling or at re-election time. But it was that way for decades before Stewart and the others got in to office.
Lucky D 🙂
That is why, Chief Deane, is the most at risk for retaliation by HSM. He will write the policy and train his police officers to enforce the new directive his way. That puts him at risk with so much ambiguity, no question. I agree, it was somewhat a deal with the devil, but there was no repealing the probable cause completely, coming out in front of immigration has been a precarious position to be in and I try to empathize with the Board. I think the future remains to be seen what the next steps will be regarding the implementation of the amended resolution. In the end, I believe there will come a time, when each Supervisor will have to affirm their position, not for or against illegal immigration, but how we deal with such a complex problem. THAT conversation has yet to happen. I would add, that Corey, in one of the latest 9500 interviews, acutally admits our immigration policy needs an overhaul.

Let’s waste some more money shall we BOCS? Now the Chief has to re-train and hold MORE community meetings. LOL. The BOCS Is a joke. If they got rid of the whole thing, they would have saved more money and time.
“Third, the BOCS took the easy way out. Our Police Department and Social Services have never been used as political fodder in my three decades living here in Prince William.” Yup. Why put employees in the middle? That’s not right. (And yes, I do have confidence in most of our Civil Servants. It’s the “management” and politicans I usually rant about. Never mind the Stewart wants to lay them off so he can continue to waste our money and cut services.)

Come on people, HSM is no more a hate group than all of you people. You know it and I know it. Like it or not, illegal aliens create a LOT of mayhem in their wake and this problem has been allowed to fester for far too long. I don’t know of too many other countries where 20 million illegals would be allowed to roam around at will, pay less than their fair share of taxes, grab free services, and generally make a nuisance of themselves without there being some repercussions from the host government. Like it or not, there is a very real, entrenched and hardened criminal element of illegal aliens that are not here to do the jobs that Americans won’t and frankly they have ruined it for the rest of them. Not a day goes by where I don’t pick up a paper or read a story somewhere that isn’t writing about some illegal that murdered, raped, or maimed somebody. You all mean well, but you aren’t seeing the big picture imo.
I also see as many personal attacks here as I do on bvbl. None of them are amusing.
Elena, I just watched your video and thought you were very well-spoken and passionate about your cause. I thought it was a little dramatic, but I’m sure that’s what you were going for. I pegged you for a school teacher.
Marie at 7:43
Another generalization with a label indicating gross misunderstanding of the term “nativists” that just doesn’t apply to people who advocate that the “illegal” alien law be enforced, unless of course you just want to slander them and put them into a bad-guy bucket so you can more easily denigrate them.
How about we make up a term for the liberal “pro-illegal”, “other side” called “separatists”. Nativists and separatists, that should just about cover everyone you think?
Definition: Separatist, a hate-mongering liberal who advocates for the overthrow of the nation and a destruction of national unity, national culture and national law, by advocating that all people who want to uphold illegal immigration law are to be called “nativists”, but are really “nazis” in disguise. Seperatists vociferously believe that all illegal alien laws should be broken and that all peoples in all nations (especially in their beloved US nation) should separate into separate and distinct cultures, should all speak different languages and should all receive different privileges and rights based on separate and different laws applied to people based on their race, gender, religion or ethnic group political affiliation. The key mantra of a “socialist separatist” is to declare that only minorities should get free money and benefits from social programs, based on how many different “diversity” groups can be brought into the country, and that “one of each” minority group members should be given numerical advantages over all majority groups, to achieve more jobs and higher pay, not based on abilities and skill, but based on numerical and racial balancing quotas, that give preference and advantage to people of all cultures more diverse than the majority culture in the nation. These special socialist benefits are to be paid by the majority for the benefit of only the minority and paid based on race, gender, religion and ethnic group affiliation. If anyone opposes this they are to be labeled a “nativist” and if that doesn’t work labeled a “nazi”.
Marie at 14:57. Your quotes are highly selective on only the most radical, and frankly “un-invited” group of people. The vast majority of quotes I have seen from the “citizens” who oppose you are not hateful or extreme, they are simply based on a desire to enforce that law, that without enforcement has caused the community problems everyone has been forced to deal with in a spiraling decent into poverty, crime, and community destruction.
It is a simple solution, just enforce the law and a whole group of “lawless” people will not be able to cause any more trouble, crime, cultural seperatism, racism, and social, financial decay in the community. Then that leaves the problem of only having to deals with the “legal” people who create crime, cause trouble, promote cultural separatism, promote racism, and are responsible for the social, financial decay in the community. Enforceing the law simply reduces the numbers and magnitude of what we have been dealing with since the birth of our nation.
It is not a crime to enforce the law, and enforcing the law does not make you a nativist or a nazi. The logic of that is excessive and desinged to create hatred of a group you want to hate, that does not deserve your hatred. Racism is as racism does. Hatred is as hatred does. I don’t see the difference in level of hate in these concerned citizen’s comments, than others, but I see an increase in level of hate discussed in the “Anti” crowd. I also see an increase in “separatism” advocacy and racial segregation concepts in the “antibvbl” crowd.
As both sides elevate a racial and ethnic group conflict by throwing hate words at each other, the un-wise man fails to find the neutral ground. The law is neutral, enforce it, it is applied neutrally to everyone, to do anything else is to invite hatred, hate words and ethnic group separatism, segregation, destructive diversity, and “pro-illegal alien” ethnic group political division into political hate groups with a majority group as its principal hate target. Frankly if you don’t think neutral, and enforce the law, you are defending the wrong side.
The elitist crowd that runs our government, the McCains and Bushs and Clintons, simply refuse to enforce the law. Despite having sworn to uphold it, they systematically undermine it. Hence the push-back at the local level.
Great comments Michael. Unfortunately they are wasted on this crowd because they have not had to endure what we have. Once this issue hits home for them on a more personal and financial level then I am 99.9999^% sure they will come around and see the light. Like everyone else in this world, hit them in the pocketbook and they will come around.
