Last night, Ann Romney tried to connect her husband to the women. She spoke of love. The women at the convention loved Mrs. Romney. I aam not so sure how well she did with those not at the convention.
Governor Chris Christie tried to connect to a tough guy anti union crowd. He threw raw meat and spoke about respect. The crowd loved him. He nearly forgot to mention Mitt, but the crowd roared. Public employee hater Scott Walker came along with a similar theme. He didn’t create quite the roar Christie did, but Christie is a Republican lion.
Tonight another appeal will come out. Jeb Bush will attempt to connect to the Hispanics, especially in swing state Florida. He has a tall order. The Republican party is the party of “Illegal is Illegal.” Its hard to find a Latino family that doesn’t have friends or family who is here illegally. Sympathies are usually with the person out of status. Jeb Bush will also represent the family that no one mentions. Neither of the President Bushes are at the convention. President George Herbert Walker Bush is not in the best of health. His son President George W. Bush has retired from politics. That leaves Jeb to hold up the old guard of the Republican Party. Jeb will be busy.
I can understand why we’d be sad to see the neo-cons go away……they paved the way for Obama!
Christie shouldn’t have followed Ann Romney. Perhaps they should have been on different nights.
I think Ann gave a good speech.
I also thought it was off-putting, knowing that she is rolling in dough and speaking about poor women. She had to do it but it left me cold. (and she did a nice job at something that she was alien to.)
“I want to tell you they marched out of the hall Tuesday night
on fire for their side. But I was there and they did not. They
walked out like people who weren’t quite sure what to think
or how to feel, but were hoping for the best because they love
their country.”
Peggy Noonan’s Blog (WSJ 8-29-2012)
Noonan thought Ann Romney wasn’t great, but loved
Big Tony from Jersey. I felt the opposite.
I liked Nikki Haley’s speech best. Love me some Scott Walker, too.
Nikki Haley is generally an unoffensive person giving a speech. Scott Walker, not so much but he cleaned up his act a lot since last winter.
The Republican convention is for grown-ups. They spoke effectively to fiscal and personal responsbility and putting country over self, something we have not seen from the current administration. A chicken in every pot, a car in every garage !! may sell, but its more like a child being led out of the toy store screaming because he or she did not get that toy. Its hard on the parent to do the right thing, but I think most Americans are ready for the tough love.
Is that why George W. Bush wasn’t invited to speak?
On the other hand, I would expect everyone to put their best foot forward at a national convention, even the Ron Paul crowd and those they scuffled with.
I happened to catch the black Mormon woman, Mia Love.
Man, was she on fire! Great orator IMO.
Nikki Haley tried to be kinda cute; didn’t care too much for her spiel.
So many of the speakers bring up their immigrant ancestors. Don’t know why.
LOL maybe they are jealous of the birther attention. Just kidding.
@Moon-howler
Perhaps he was. He seems to be taking his retirement from public life very seriously.
That Christie guy sure is a hefty one. Is he a rising star in the Repug party? He sure could use some advice from Michelle Obama about obesity, I tell you what!
Oh, right, obesity. The last great frontier of acceptable ridicule and discrimination.
Have you seen the size of Michelle’s caboose?
