I think there probably needs to be a place for general remarks about the middle east.

It seems that uprisings at American Embassies  are escalating all over north Africa and the Middle East.

The general thought by the protesters  is that President Obama should apologize to all of them (whoever “them” is) and burn the tape in front of them.  Common thought is that the US government somehow created the video.

That’s pretty difficult to fight….it’s sort of like responding to “when did you stop beating your wife?”

Yes. Any nation that protests us obviously doesn’t want us. Let’s pull out and see what happens.

    1. You might want to rethink all that with your adult classes on.

Consider the alternatives. Watch your problems grow exponentially.

  2. Interesting info from USA Today

The protest was planned by Salafists well before news circulated of an objectionable video ridiculing Islam’s prophet, Mohammed, said Eric Trager, an expert at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

The protest outside the U.S. Embassy in Cairo was announced Aug. 30 by Jamaa Islamiya, a State Department-designated terrorist group, to protest the ongoing imprisonment of its spiritual leader, Sheikh Omar abdel Rahman. He is serving a life sentence in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.

When the video started circulating, Nader Bakkar, the spokesman for the Egyptian Salafist Noor party, which holds about 25% of the seats in parliament, called on people to go to the embassy. He also called on non-Islamist soccer hooligans, known as Ultras, to join the protest.

On Monday, the brother of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al Zawahiri, Mohamed al Zawahiri, tweeted that people should go to the embassy and “defend the prophet,” Trager said.

Zawahiri justified al-Qaeda’s 9/11 attacks in an interview with Al Jazeera last month.

“If America attacks the Arab peoples and their regimes do not defend them, somebody who does defend the Arab and Muslim peoples should not be considered a criminal,” Zawahiri told the television network, according to a translation by MEMRI. “We have done nothing wrong.”

I keep hearing this claim that Obama “apologized” for our country. Can someone please post one instance where the president “apologized for America” in a statement or speech? I mean an actual verifiable quote in context, not a Palin speech or a Hannity rant. I would love to see it, since I don’t think it exists (and the fact checkers don’t either).

  4. Middleman, you probably won’t see it. You are right. It doesn’t exist.

having good manners is seen as an apology to those who identify with cowboy diplomacy.

  5. @Cargosquid

Don’t you think there are protests very often? Big difference in a protest and trying to over-take an embassy.

  6. @Moon-howler
Yes. There are a lot of protests. That’s fine.

They actually attack sovereign American territory…..all bets are off.

  7. Refresh my memory….

Who here do you think supports taking over an embassy?

I keep asking. No one supports embassy take over.

No one supports insurgents on a military base either.

It isn’t quite as simple as “we are the biggest baddest mofos in the valley.”

  8. @Moon-howler
Um…nobody? Didn’t say that anyone here did….that is, if that question was to me. I was just answering your question at #7.

  9. We need to distinguish the difference while there still is a difference.

Seeing any gathering would be making me nervous is I were in one of those embassies.
