Congratulations to the class of 2013! You hold the future. Whether you are gong to work, going to college, or doing a little of both, take the time to assess what you want. Don’t live for the moment. Stupid decisions are often hard to undo.
On the other hand, no one expects you to know your life course at 18. You are young enough to poke around in life and see what appeals to you. This is also a time to explore. Just keep goals in mind and don’t lose your focus.
Make sure life and your new freedom isn’t just about the next party or some special hottie du jour. There is a lot more to each person than their appearance. Not everyone is “cute.” Remember to chose close friends carefully. Don’t be too quick to apply ‘give everyone the benefit of the doubt.’ Why should you give anyone the benefit of the doubt? Trust your own instincts and your gut. If you feel ewwwwy about someone, there is probably a reason. Distance yourself. Making good people choices now is critical. Mom and Dad aren’t going to always be there to arrange your play dates. Rely on their wisdom.
Ahhhhhhh too much pontificating, Moon. Anyone else have some advice for the graduating class of 2013? I have a special person graduating tonight. Congratulations, Courtney and everyone else too!!! Carpe Diem.
No advice, just keep learning. Make it a lifelong commitment. I like how Phi Theta Kappa students at NOVA-Manassas volunteer to help seniors learn how to use Smartphones, Facebook, etc. I like how seniors volunteer a half-day or full day to help elementary school students review for the SOLs each spring. Keep connecting, be adventurous and then bring your brain trust and experiences back to PW/Manassas.

Thanks, Cindy. I sure didn’t know all that.
As a follow up to an earlier thread…the ricin letters:
I stated that I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a frame up by an anti-gun rights person.
Well, apparently I was right. The initial motivation was to frame a husband, but also the writer is an anti-gun person.

See…I’m always rights. Just ask me. 😉
Can you find this information elsewhere? The picture of Cho sort of invalidated the entire article for me. Definitely a slant. How about something a little more neutral?
The information is neutral. The woman was arrested for sending the letters and framing her husband.

Easy enough to find.
Going back to the original link…I didn’t even see that picture of Cho. I guess I’ve seen so much of that from the anti-gun crowd, which is where it comes from….I remember seeing it elsewhere, that I ignored it.
Why would you see it with the “anti gun crowd” whoever that is. I saw it mostly on the news having to do with VA Tech massacres. I certainly don’t associate that evil picture of Cho with any type of anti gun movement.
but I forget…I am an anti gun person probably, in your eyes.
I think it might be in Huffington also. What I don’t see is where she has a political agenda or is an ‘anti gun’ person. It just sounds like maybe she is a nut case. Why do you think her actions were politically motivated? She sounds very much like a person who should never own a gun or have access to one because she is freaking nuts.
@Moon-howler
I’ve seen the Cho pic used in accordance with “here’s the NRA” type stuff, like that picture has.
If convicted that woman won’t have legal access to a gun. Good. Her actions were motivated by a desire to harm her husband, apparently. She can hit two birds with the same stone…she thought.
She should go to prison and you are right, no access.
As for advice to the new graduates….don’t become lawyers.
Go into the trades…I just had a plumber here. $100/hour.
Very wise advise, Cargo.
You didn’t warn me how expensive NOVA has gotten. I mean the community college system.
NOVA? I live in Richmond. And J. Sargeant Reynolds tuition is
In-State resident: $135.10 per semester credit hour
Out-of-State resident: $327.20 per semester credit hour
Sure am glad that there is a GI Bill.
Northern Virginia people think it is all about us. What do you call the group of regional state community colleges in your area?
I think it is more expensive here by just a little bit.
Its the same, sorry. I was just looking at the add on fees.
$145.25
Can only parents deduct college fees from their taxes?
@Moon-howler
Moon, a person who is not filing the long 1040 and Schedule A for deductions, can file form 1040-A which has a line to deduct both Student Loan Interest and also Tuition & Fee Costs. Also if a teacher, can deduct Educator expenses. Subject to the various calculations against the Adjusted Gross Income.
If the person just files the 1040-EZ, there are no provisions for these deductions.
Do you have to be the parent of a student to deduct tuition and fees? Can you be another relative?
Familiar with the educator deductions. Sigh. That ship has sailed.
Shocked to see headline from conservative Instapundit reading “DoJ Delays Prosecution of McConnell Bugger. Sure. He’s a Dem.” Can’t believe we’re just now hearing about this. I’d thinking McConnell getting buggered would be “breaking news.”

@Cargosquid
Try getting a lawyer for $100/hour! Pocket change.
@punchak
Yeah…but no student loan debt to pay off. While the lawyer is in school, plumber is making 100/hour.
@Cargo
OK, agree, but after he’s through schooling, I’d wager that he’ll be less useful to the average citizen than the plumber.
And – he’ll quickly regain what the didn’t earn during the studying period. Also, he won’t have to unplug clogged drains and toilets.
Actually, from what I’m hearing, law students are having a hard time finding jobs.
Maybe they ought to learn about plumbing. There’ll always be a need. 🙂
Should this new anti abortion bill become law, women would be forced to carry severe fetal deformites and abnormalities to term if the problems are discovered at 20 weeks or after.
The news coverage is ignoring the most important part of the bill.
Rep Marsha Blackburn is an idiot. She will be managing the floor during today’s vote.
I have caught her in 3 lies in 5 minutes. Giving out bad information to enact legislation is just dead wrong.
The entire bill is based on medical lies.
