April is here.  We have no clue what to expect.  We could freeze our tails off or the opposite.  The weather keeps getting weirder.

May could bring on a heat wave.  I guess we play this day to day.

9 Thoughts to “Open Thread…………………April 2017”

  1. I opened April by unofficially umping a girls softball game for the first time and even though a day later my legs (and specifically my knees) are killing me, I have been advised that I did well enough to seek certification. I intend on doing that more often once my daughters are no longer playing, so that I would have zero perceived biases.

    1. Congratulations! It’s great to have community minded adults like you involved.

I bet your knees are killing you! One of mine hurts just because it is hooked on to the rest of me.

  2. Full Moon Tuesday.

Then comes Easter. Easter is generally calculated to be the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox.

So upset today… took my son out to run a few errands and when we got back discovered that a squirrel had dug up and made off with 1/2 of my tulip bulbs which were just starting to come up. I had planted them a little late in the season but planted them in way I found on youtube. You plant one outer ring, in a large planter, fairly deep and then plant an inner ring about 4″ shallower. When they all come up it gives a neat tiered effect.

I’ve been babying them for several weeks now and was excited to see what the pattern would look like until today when those little bastards destroyed it.

Any good suggestions on keeping critters from digging up all of my bulbs? I’ve tried various sprays but unless you apply it every single day it doesn’t seem to have much of an effect. Last year they destroyed weeks worth of gardening and I don’t want to have a repeat of that this year.

    1. I wish I could help. I planted a bunch of ones with pink in them 2 falls ago. The next day I came out and one little grey bastard had bowled with about half of them. I was furious.

Maybe moth balls would help…well placed in the planter. Critters seem to hate moth balls. Moth balls also keep cats from wetting on carpet. You have to make sure little kids don’t have access. Both balls apparently look like candy and they are poisonous, or so I am told. I had a cousin who ate moth balls when she was little. They pumped her stomach.

        MoonHowler,

Thanks for the suggestion but with little ones running around I’ll probably stay away from moth balls. After doing a little more research I think that I’m going to keep with the ‘critter ridder’ spray and add some plastic mesh to protect them a bit more.

I know what you mean about being furious… After all of the careful planning, planting, watering and feeding only to see these little A-holes make off with 1/2 of them right when they start to break the surface sucks. I’ll let you know how it works out…

Happy EAster already! Stayed up late to watch the
hockey game, which the Caps lost in the second overtime. 🙁
Anyway, I’ve never tasted tulips, but it seems that kritters
like them. I’ve stopped planting; deer ate most of mine.

I do like April with all the flowering trees and tiny leaves
    on bushes and trees. Redbud is one of my favorites;
    dogwood as well.

    1. I love redbuds and dogwood!

Spring has as many colors as fall, just spring is softer.

      Happy Easter!!

‘All that Confederate stuff’ leads to endorsement switch in Va. governor’s race

Corey Stewart’s Confederate-centric bid for Virginia governor has cost him the endorsement of a longtime political ally and prompted four of the five Republicans who serve with him on a county board to back his GOP rival.

Prince William County Sheriff Glendell Hill yanked his endorsement from Stewart over the weekend and announced he was backing former Republican strategist Ed Gillespie in the June 13 primary.

“All that Confederate stuff — I don’t think that’s really necessary for a person that’s running for public office,” Hill told The Washington Post on Monday. “It’s something that divided our country and the races, and we just don’t need that. We want a governor that’s going to represent and serve all the people.”

At the same time, four of Stewart’s Republican colleagues on the Prince William Board of County Supervisors came out for Gillespie.

Stewart (At Large) is the chairman of the county board, and the five other Republican supervisors had intended to stay neutral, even after Gillespie personally asked for their backing, Supervisor Martin E. Nohe (Coles) said. They made that decision partly as a “professional courtesy” and partly to prevent politics from complicating negotiations over the county budget, Nohe said.

But recent events — including Stewart’s participation in a Confederate-themed ball two weeks ago and the appearance of an airplane streaming a Confederate flag and Stewart banner Friday — led the four to reconsider, Nohe said. The fifth, Supervisor Maureen S. Caddigan (Dumfries), remains neutral.
