Great story from the PWCA blog. I love supporting local farmers, either buying produce or beef. Here is a wonderful way to support your local community!

What: PWCA 1st Thursdays – Local Food & Sustainable Agriculture
When: Thursday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Bull Run Unitarian Universalist Church, 9350 Main St., ManassasOnce home to a thriving farming community, subdivisions and shopping centers have replaced much of Prince William’s rural landscape. This loss isn’t unique to Prince William. Family farms have given way to corporate agribusiness nationwide, essentially entrusting the quality of our food and well being to big business.
Today, after years of rising obesity and blood pressure, fast food diets are giving way to increasing interest in locally grown food… fresher food that retains more nutrients.
Better food is only part of the benefit. Locally grown means locally sold. Supporting urban farming also preserves open space, improves the appearance of our community and supports our local economy, helping keep our taxes in check.
Do you know where your food comes from and what’s in it? How far did it have to travel before reaching your table? Is it even possible to have agriculture in DC’s densely populated suburbs?
On March 4 at 7:00 p.m., Hiu Newcomb, owner of Potomac Vegetable Farms, will tackle these questions and talk about the benefits of locally grown food and sustainable agriculture.
I enjoy reading the threads on “Your Piece of the Planet” — my favorite local blog next to the new Moonhowlings.net. Thanks for spreading the word!
Amen, amen, and amen again!!!
Next month the Farmers Market in Manassas opens. 🙂
To Wolverine and Cindy,
Prince William Conservation Alliance really does represent the best of common goals, not based on a silly R or D, but based on common sense and a recognition that we all must figure how to not just survive but THRIVE on this gift called Earth.
Chris,
I just LOVE farmers markets, they are so fun!
Manassas farmers market opening Thursday April 29 and Saturday May 1.
The Manassas Farmers market is a social event.
This year there will be a booth from Blue Ridge Seafood. They will be selling fresh shrimp and possibly Maine lobsters.
Oh dear God. The last temptation arrives in Manassas.
Oh, I can’t wait for the farmer’s market, and for the City folks to come out of hibernation.
County residents come out of hibernation for the farmer’s market too, Emma. 🙂 I never miss a Saturday and most Thursdays.
Elena — The local farmer’s market was a huge part of my life as a kid. My grandmother, mother, and aunts used to can and preserve everything they could get their hands on; and the cellars of just about everyone in the family were filled for the winter with preserves, not to mention the huge bins of Idaho potatoes. They even pickled pigs’ feet — not exactly my favorite. Those people knew how to survive in a crisis! We still go to those markets whenever we can. I just wish they were bigger and more widespread. We are members of the Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC), which, as you probably know, is a big, big supporter of local farmers and farm products. Land preservation is a big deal for Mr. and Mrs. Wolverine — a big, big, big deal.
@Lafayette I’ll rephrase: “…for the COMMUNITY to come out of hibernation.”
If I see you there, maybe I’ll introduce myself 🙂
Emma, by all means please do. I’d like to exchange some homemade goods with you. 🙂
