35 Thoughts to “Presidential Debate 08 \McCain and Obama/”

  1. Red Dawn

WHY are we watching the debates, like it is our saving grace and they have the answers?

We are complacent in America but who will make the FIRST move as the people?

And NO Homeland Security, I am not calling for a REVOLUTION uprise, so do not DISTURB my sleep to come and get me at 4 am to throw me in the RUMORED FEMA camps….I promise you, you will want to let me go, LOL

Save me and you the headache, shoot me, I know where I’m going….lol

2 videos before either scenario plays out… 🙂

How about AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE ( they are talking about ENERGY independence…this is live as I type)

  2. DiversityGal

So McCain thought that dude probably hadn’t heard of Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac before this crisis, huh? Condescending much?

  3. Red Dawn

HOW can they PROJECT the future that sits on the ABYSS unless it IS controlled?

What else makes sense? I am NOT 100% certain but they are full of shit. If they can have a PROJECTED plan, WHY are we in the position that we are in?????

  4. Red Dawn

    DG,

    “Condescending much?”

Right there with you…I kept CHANGING my comment, the more I heard…

I CALL BULLSHIT and MCCAIN said our best days are ahead of us…HEARD that a month ago…lol it is a BULLSHIT. PERIOD 😉

  5. Moon-howler

I want to know where McCain got the overhead projector in the planetarium line from. Did I hear him right? How do you have a planetarium without a projector? Help me out here.

I agree, DG, about the Freddie and Fannie remark. Is it because we live in the Washington suburbs that we assume everyone knows about Freddie and Fannie? Perhaps I should have said know of their existence, hell, I was never sure what they really did and still don’t.

Is it because we live in this area that many of us feel Sarah Palin is out of touch? A friend of mine said I had said she was a hick because she liked her. I did no such thing to my friend who lives in the west.

  6. Red Dawn

The question that arose during the immigration debate was how much more can you beat a DEAD HORSE…..NOW it is about a DEAD CAT BOUNCE….lol

I HUMBLY ask when everyone will wake UP? LOL

  7. Moon-howler

Red Dawn, are you having a revelation? The only thing I understood was bullshit. That came though loud and clear.

  8. DiversityGal

Did McCain did just point to Obama and refer to him as “that one.” Ye Gods, the disrespect!

In any case, I have to laugh that Senator McCain thinks, in his advanced age, that the best days are ahead. I know…that was petty, but the dude is getting on my nerves.

  9. Red Dawn

Let me say it louder BULLSHIT!!!!!! Glad someone is listening in the valley as I climbed (research) the mountains to SCREAM Bullshit….echo..echo…echo…LOOK down below…..LOL, get out of the way…..oh SHIT!!!!!! lol 🙂

  10. Red Dawn

    21:55 was for Moon 😉

  11. Moon-howler

Definitely a revelation of some sort 😉

  12. Chris

    Diversity Gal,
I am truly undecided. I really don’t align myself with either candidate. However, I am going to have to make a choice.

I was completely taken back by that “that one” statement with a point at Senator Obama. I am going to scream if I hear “my friends” one more time. GRRRR!! he just said it again, and again as I was getting ready to hit submit. Can you hear me screaming across town?
😉 (Note: not a Palin wink)

  13. Red Dawn

    Chris,

    My friend(s) lol

“Can you hear me screaming across town?”

I was screaming from the top of a mountain having a revelation of some sort…lol

I call BULLSHIT. That is one round I don’t want to pass around 🙂

Admin note: I tired to post and got denied again…

  14. DiversityGal

    Chris,

I agree. “My friends” is making me squirm.

    A note to Senator McCain…

I don’t think the Iran situation is joke-worthy. Get real. You are auditioning for the job of a world leader. You cannot pull that s***. It is not funny, I hold you accountable for saying it, and the rest of the world is watching/listening, too.

  15. DiversityGal

NBC just echoed concern about the two issues brought up earlier: the Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac comment and the “that one” remark. Apparently others are blogging about it, too.

  16. Red Dawn

    DG,
    Speaking of FM/FM….

CONFLICT of interest/fox guarding the hen house or MY revelation of: LOL

  17. Elena

What I am wondering is if McCain is proposing a spending freeze, how is he going to invest in energy technology and health care during his “spending freeze” ?!

  18. Red Dawn

Watching the interview post debate questioning college students:

listening to the YOUNG voters that are speaking on their PARENT’S dime( more often then not) talking about change… WHEN was the last time you talked to your parents beofre the interview? Ask your parents, that have banked your college fund in investments or refinanced their homes…INVESTING in YOUR future….Do your parent agree TODAY?

  19. DiversityGal

It’s gotta come from somewhere, huh? God forbid we don’t give tax cuts to the upper echelon.

Take a look at the photo in my post at 22:55 and compare it to this GOLDman ( not GOLDman Sachs=heaven forbid…lol)

  21. Robb Pearson

Senator Obama was unquestionably the winner in this debate. He articulated excellently, displayed tremendous confidence, and answered with superb substance. He ultimately presented himself with “presidential poise”, which captured both my attention and my respect.

Senator McCain seemed disconnected and detached, and his answers were often muddled and disarranged. He lost me, though, when he referred to Senator Obama as “that one”. I found that tremendously disrespectful.

  22. Moon-howler

Elena, I wondered the same thing myself. I figured he left out part of the equation there. Freezing spending and implementing health care? Didn’t make sense to me.

Would someone tell me what he said about the plantarium overhead projector? Was it an earmark and what was his point?

  23. If it were a boxing match the referee would have stopped the fight after 10 minutes. This debate was a blow-out victory for Obama.

    Obama: A

    McCain: D-

I have tried to blame the annoyingly and incomprehensibly reactive campaing on his advisers, but we know where the buck stops, after all. I had hoped the economy issue would die down after the rescue bill was passed. But the crisis is bigger than I realized. And so begins the smear and fear. McCain and Palin think they are insulting Obama; they are insulting our intelligence.

I have not been posting for many reasons, but one reason was that I had no way of defending this inexcusably inept campaign.

After what I saw tonight, the only way I could justify a vote for McCain is if I were certain that Obama would win anyway.

  24. NotGregLetiecq

Andrew Sullivan of Atlantic Monthly said it was “a mauling” of McCain by Obama. The pundits are being kind.

McCain is so used to Freedom Fry Voter audiences who laugh at anything remotely resembling a joke. Here, McCain’s feeble attempts at humor just looked pathetic. He makes a joke about his hair loss when the topic is Americans losing their healthcare? He tries to break in and say “Thank you heh heh heh heh” when Obama establishes the false premises of McCain’s usual sales job about experience vis a vis Pakistan, then Obama pivots into reminding us of McCain’s “bomb bomb bomb Iran” song and the “heh heh heh” gets wiped off McCain’s face and he turns ashen grey while Obama rips into McCain for his hawkish/childish theme songs about several other countries. CNN has a camera angle that showed both men as Obama was flambaying McCain for 20 seconds, then they finally cut away no doubt out of mercy.

And what was with McCain going after Tom Brokaw for no reason at all?

As I said on the other thread, i felt bad for McCain. This campaign can’t be over soon enough for him. He deserves to retire with dignity.

  25. Pat.Herve

Did anyone notice at the end, when the candidates came to the audience, Barack Obama put his hand out to McCain – McCain made a sweeping motion towards Cindy – and did not (refused?) to put his hand out to shake the hand of Barack Obama. Cindy then shook his hand.

McCain is loosing it, I cringe when he says ‘My Friends” almost as much as when I hear Palin say “Maverick”.

  26. Moon-howler

Pat.Herve, We must have the same cringe button. I am so sick of both of those terms. I used to like the word ‘maverick.’ Now I hate it.

  27. Pat.Herve

    Moon-howler,

did you happen to catch SNL – with the ‘maverick’ counters – too funny.

  28. Marie

I also noticed that McCain appeared to refuse to shake Obama’s hand. In the last debate he never made eye contact with Obama one time. The “that one” statement when referring to Obama was very disrespectful. I was taken aback. Can you imagine him referring to world leaders as “that one” or “those”?

I am an independent who has not aligned myself with either candidate, but like Chris I am going to have to make a decision. I am concerned about this country and where we are headed. I am also pissed that neither candidate really addressed Social Security and Medicare crisis.

I will be glad when all this is over and we can move on.

My husband and I watched the debate last night. Well, my husband watched the first 15 minutes or so and then decided that neither were straying far from their talking points and he decided to feed the cats, turn down the furnace, and get ready for bed. We saw the Fannie/Freddie comment and said “WTF” almost in unison. I stayed put to watch the rest of the show. “That one” jumped out for me also. As the night went on John McCain seemed older and the negative Sarah Palin factor loomed larger for me. McCain also seemed fidgety and I wondered why he was wandering around on stage as Obama spoke.

Obama won points for staying to work the crowd after the debate was over.

Does this tick you off???? I want my money back!!!!!!! We should all demand it.

  31. Red Dawn

    Marie,

Now your talking! Can you BELEIVE the arrogance? UFB!

  32. I don’t give a hoot about how many times McCain said “my friends” or whether McCain makes eye contact or refuses to shake Obama’s hand. So what if Obama is taller and more athletic.

If you simply read a transcript of this debate, Obama made better arguments when it came to the last 8 years, and he expressed a more sophisticated, more modern vision of the future when talking about the next 8.

There were several occasions when McCain, sadly, was made to follow up on Obama’s answer, and could do little more than say the same thing Obama had just said, only not as cogently and not as convincingly. The final question was the icing on the cake. The question was “What don’t you know, and how will you learn it?”

    Obama:

My wife, Michelle, is there and she could give you a much longer list than I do. And most of the time, I learn it by asking her.

But, look, the nature of the challenges that we’re going to face are immense and one of the things that we know about the presidency is that it’s never the challenges that you expect. It’s the challenges that you don’t that end up consuming most of your time.

    McCain:

Well, thank you, Tom. And I think what I don’t know is what all of us don’t know, and that’s what’s going to happen both here at home and abroad.

The challenges that we face are unprecedented. Americans are hurting tonight in a way they have not in our generation.

There are challenges around the world that are new and different and there will be different — we will be talking about countries sometime in the future that we hardly know where they are on the map, some Americans.

So what I don’t know is what the unexpected will be.

Or, here is a more substantive example. The question was: “How can we trust either of you with our money when both parties got — got us into this global economic crisis?”

    Obama:

Well, look, I understand your frustration and your cynicism, because while you’ve been carrying out your responsibilities — most of the people here, you’ve got a family budget. If less money is coming in, you end up making cuts. Maybe you don’t go out to dinner as much. Maybe you put off buying a new car.

That’s not what happens in Washington. And you’re right. There is a lot of blame to go around.

But I think it’s important just to remember a little bit of history. When George Bush came into office, we had surpluses. And now we have half-a-trillion-dollar deficit annually.

When George Bush came into office, our debt — national debt was around $5 trillion. It’s now over $10 trillion. We’ve almost doubled it.

And so while it’s true that nobody’s completely innocent here, we have had over the last eight years the biggest increases in deficit spending and national debt in our history. And Sen. McCain voted for four out of five of those George Bush budgets.

    McCain:

Well, Theresa, thank you. And I can see why you feel that cynicism and mistrust, because the system in Washington is broken. And I have been a consistent reformer.

I have advocated and taken on the special interests, whether they be the big money people by reaching across the aisle and working with Sen. [Russ] Feingold [D-Wisconsin] on campaign finance reform, whether it being a variety of other issues, working with Sen. Lieberman on trying to address climate change.

I have a clear record of bipartisanship. The situation today cries out for bipartisanship. Sen. Obama has never taken on his leaders of his party on a single issue. And we need to reform.

And so let’s look at our records as well as our rhetoric. That’s really part of your mistrust here. And now I suggest that maybe you go to some of these organizations that are the watchdogs of what we do, like the Citizens Against Government Waste or the National Taxpayers Union or these other organizations that watch us all the time.

I don’t expect you to watch every vote. And you know what you’ll find? This is the most liberal big-spending record in the United States Senate. I have fought against excessive spending and outrages. I have fought to reduce the earmarks and eliminate them.

  33. Witness Too

It looks like McCain lost again. Even Fox News is saying so this time. That’s 0 for 3 for the McCain/Palin team. In a best of four, that means it’s over, doesn’t it?

  34. ShellyB

McCain should throw in the towel. Just run a respectable campaign like Dole in ’96. No need to damage his legacy by diving in the mud.

  35. Red Dawn

The annoying “my friend” has turned into “my fellow prisoners”- 😉
