Much as been made lately of how history will judge George Bush. However, as I sat watching PBS and the History Channel on the eve of an Inauguration, I could not help but notice how much of an impact the first ladies have made on the White House and on the office of the presidency. From Dolly Madison saving the portrait of Washington to Jackie Kennedy’s decorating, the first ladies have left their mark on history.
Laura Bush is probably one of the most soft-spoken, gracious women in America and she has been one of the most popular first ladies. Her interests run from literacy to aids cure, combating malaria, and fighting breast cancer and heart disease. Probably reading and children’s literacy would be her favorite cause because of her background as a teacher and librarian.
Laura Bush is remarkable because she has maintained her popularity during a time when her husband has been at his nadir in popularity. She has maintained a balance most fail to achieve—she supported her husband and at the same time let us all know that she was not a drone. She will be missed and her influence and grace will be permanently etched in the White House.
Yes she has class, and she showed it during the campaign.
She used to be a Democrat. Guess she was raised right. 🙂
I’m a fan.
hahahah Touche. I think both Bushes have shown a great deal of class during the transition. Mrs. Bush has done so many things that have gone unnoticed. Her quiet eloguence will grow in stature as time passes.
Speaking of past first ladies…Mrs. Carter looked like a million dollars for age 82. They are an amazing couple.
Laura Busch came in as a shy, small-town girl, it seemed to me, and she goes out as an absolutely poised, charming, beautiful woman. A great example for her daughters and for all women. I hope Mrs. Obama will adapt equally well to her important role as First Lady.
We need someone to say something nasty, or this is no fun …
She did look drunk a lot of the time. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s got an alchohol problem. But anyway, she did well.
LOL, I think it might be exhausting to be married to George, “we’ve got to raise the pie” on this. But, I’ll bet she’s had fun. Good for her.
I think Laura Bush is a woman of class and dignity.
Rick, perhaps there was a reason;)
I am not going to be nasty for 24 hours!
I always had a small soft spot for Laura Bush for two reasons. The first was her deep love of reading and writers and the fact she invited writers to her events who were in no way in accord with her husband’s politics. The second was I read more than once that she used to sneak cigarettes on the grounds of the White House. I am not a smoker, never have been, but that was sweetly transgressive and I applaud it.
Laura Bush has elevated even more in my mind 😉
