Jon Stewart made his big announcement Thursday night:
From CBS:
Jon Stewart announced on “The Daily Show” Thursday night that he’ll hold a rally on the National Mall in Washington D.C., on October 30. He showed some of the signs that organizers would be handing out at the event, which had slogans such as, “9/11 was an Outside Job.” He said the message would be to “take it down a notch for America.” The event is called the “Rally to Restore Sanity,” and is for people who think neither Barack Obama nor George W. Bush is Adolf Hitler.
For fans of “The Daily Show,” the news gets better. Stephen Colbert is participating, too. He’s also holding a rally on October 30. It’s called “The March to Keep Fear Alive,” in keeping with his right-wing talk show host persona on “The Colbert Report.”
At one point, Stewart called his event a “million moderate march.”
Cobert, playing on his right wing skit, has named his rally, “The March to Keep Fear Alive.”
Stewart criticizes extremists on both sides. I think that is his message. His appeal is to the 70-80 percenters. Finally, a rally for me.

Should I expect to see all three members of the coffee party movement there?
Not sure who is going. I expect whoever goes, Beck will be the butt of the joke.
There’s going to be a rally on the National Mall for people who don’t buy into leftwing or rightwing conspiracy theories, who think the way to change things is through our still-functioning democratic elections rather than a revolution, who prefer reasoned debate to dressing up in funny costumes, who want to elect competent leaders, and who don’t call any of our elected leaders Nazis regardless of how much they might disagree with them? There are others? Interesting.
That pretty much sums it up, NTK.
i think Stewart calls them the eighty percenters.
His skit was funny but very pointed. He is featured on The New Yorker Sept. 20 edition. A guy named Chris Smith wrote the article. I will have to buy the magazine. Just the article cost 10 bux at the website. I thought that was a lot for one article.
I can already see the beanbags, the hemp purses and the peace symbols. Awesome!! I think just for the fun of it I’ll distribute a petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide — lets see how many hippies I can get to sign off on it. 🙂
That’s in jest of course. I think it’d be great to see the rally on tv.
I fully support Comedy Central’s corporate 1st amendment rights to host a rally.
I just looked at http://www.glennbeck.com and saw immediately two ads – “New Survival Seed Bank – Let’s You Plant Full Acre Crisis Garden” and Goldline International, Inc. with a picture of Beck’s smiling face (I’d be smiling too if I were raking in all of the money he is).
Of course, Comedy Central and John Stewart will get corporate publicity and profit from the October 30 event but probably not nearly as much as Beck has been doing with his events. At least Stewart is not blatantly trying to scare people into investing in “survival seeds” and gold to make a buck. I’ve even heard Beck talking with a straight face about the world ending in 2012.
I like the idea of taking the shrillness of the current debate down a few notches and exposing the conspiracy theorists and fear-mongers for the frauds they are. So what if both Beck and Stewart make some bucks exercising their First Amendment rights? Let’s lay everything out on the table, examine it all with rational, skeptical debate, and see what emerges. It’s all part of how America works.
@Moon-howler
That is the winning strategy! Just keep laughing!
NTK, I’m not familiar with Beck’s Seed program (can you provide a URL?) but that doesn’t sound like a bad thing. In the end it’s just a commercial solution for something the Norway government has done. Google Svalbard Global Seed Vault.
I think it’s a great thing for democracy and political engagement for Stewart and Colbert to do this.
@marinm
It was an ad on Beck’s web site selling seeds to individuals to have on hand to plant after doomsday.
marin, its at http://www.glennbeck.com
Seriously. I saw it also.
@Slow, keep offering up candidates like Angle, O’donnell and Paladino and I will keep laughing. Surely you don’t think I take then seriously do you?
For the record, Paladino is the least offensive of all of them. He is just a racist who likes women with horse br……. ewwwwww
Those other 2 support big nosy government and they are as ignorant as pig tracks.
NTK, thanks. I found it. http://www.survivalseedbank.com/
I’m not overly impressed with it. To me a better strategy would be to buy more guns and ammo and take food from those that don’t protect themselves.
I’m not advocating that of course but in a worse-case scenerio I would have more faith in .223 than in my ability to be a farmer. 🙂
Thanks for the chuckle.
Marin, what does that make you become though? I am not advocating Beck’s garden. I think that is the Mormon coming out in him…and that’s ok. (Many Mormons keep a year’s supply of foods and much needed materials cached)
If food were scarce, there is something about taking from others at gun point that makes me shutter, even if it was said as a joke.
Survival of the fittest, MH. It’s human nature. If I’m drowning and you come near me I’ll drown you if it’ll save me. Ask any lifeguard or Coastie about that part of the training program.
I hear what your saying but if things have gone to hell so bad that we need emergency seeds the strong will survive at the expense of the weak.
I know about that part of the training program. And the drowning thing is mostly involuntary, where shooting someone to take their food, or threatening to do so takes a little more planning and isn’t voluntary. Even the Donner Party had a conscience of sorts.
True enough but I think you would agree that without government and law — life could get very sporty.
To get back on topic CNN is reporting that the NPS says that Comedy Central has applied for the permit but hasn’t yet been granted it.
Part of why he advertises the things he does is that there ARE boycotts against him.
“who think the way to change things is through our still-functioning democratic elections rather than a revolution, who prefer reasoned debate to dressing up in funny costumes, who want to elect competent leaders, and who don’t call any of our elected leaders Nazis regardless of how much they might disagree with them?”
Sounds like the Tea Party and Beck supporters. Tea Party members are working within the system. Beck had no signs or costumes and 8/28 and suggested that future Tea Party rallies do without. As for the calling elected leaders Nazi’s…..is it ok when the elected leaders call US Nazi’s? At a recent Tea Party candidate rally, actual employees of Democratic representatives arrived with “nazi” signs. They were followed back to the office of the Dem.
And, as for the electing of competent leaders, that’s what the Tea Party and supporters are all about. I mean, look at the incompetents in office now and the mess they’ve gotten us into.
I look forward to their rallies. Should be good entertainment.
Cargo, And good for Beck to tell his supporters to leave the Halloween costumes at home. And it seemed like the faithful came rather than who could have infiltrated. So tell me what would have happened if the rowdier element decided to come…and the MLK march was going on. I think Beck realized that was within the realm of possibility.
I think we are speaking of WHAT…not THAT he advertises. A survival garden? That speaks to a certain mentality.
I don’t know anything about the US being called NAZIs or who did it. What, when and were, and who?
I think Jon Stewart’s rally ought to be very entertaining. You know he doesn’t cut anyone any slack. He opposes extremism from anyone.
Looking forward to standing shoulder to shouder, loins girded (if we figure out how to gird a loin), with the freedom loving American patriots who are readying themselves to do battle with the evil doer pretend patriots that are really pin-heads (I would have said a different variety of hyphenated head, but who am I to challenge Billo the oracle on head matters). I hope the anti- masterbation candidate and Saint Sarah clone O’don’t touch yourself in premarital sin Donnell is there … Somebody yell “get a grip” and she yell “sinner gonna burn in Hell”. Woman in her 40s that’s untouched? No wonder she be teabagger angry and Sarah P goofy. Looks like a mission for Levi to help her get her chill on.
I wonder if, while invoking the name of Christine O’Donnell, Jon will offer a live demonstation on how only his hands turn green. LOL!
BTW, Jon must have been listening, Moon. No more silly goatee. One of those production staff girls of his must have made a remark about geezer before your time!!
Hello all you “moderates” out there!! They just announced that California’s unemployment rate has risen to 12.4 %, with the underemployment rate at 24.2%. They lost 33,500 more jobs this past month, making 2.26 million unemployed, 45% of whom have been unemployed for more than six months. California has been at the Federal teat to cover unemployment benefits to the tune of a $15 billion debt by the end of 2010. In September 2011, the state will face a $500 million interest payment on that. I’d think twice before hopping on a bus in California to come to Jon Stewart’s rally of “moderates” in D.C. Somebody is liable to grab your job in your absence — if you still have a job, that is.
I am seriously laughing at Moe. Too funny. Maybe Jon will invite you up on stage with that one.
Wolverine, the hulk hands were funny, weren’t they. He got rid of the goatee before vacation I think. He takes too many vacations! I dont like going through Jon withdrawal for a week.
California is a screwed up state. That’s the reason moderates out there are called Republicans. They are tired of being taxed to death. We have enough of ‘our kind ‘ on the east coast to keep Jon more than busy. Some dreaded liberals might show up also. Who knows. I hope c-span covers it.
Stewart gives the current administration hell also as well as liberal extremists. That’s what I like about him. No one gets a pass if he thinks they are wrong.
My sis and I will be taking Amtrak from different directions. We’re working on signs:
“Your Cognative Dissonance is Hurting My Ears”
“I Understand That You’re Angry”
“Being Loud, Obnoxious and Stupid is No Way to Make a Point”
“WWCRPD? (What Would Calm Rational People Do?)”
I like WWWCRPD the best but Cognitive Dissonance is a good runner up! @Bubbererlla
I like WWWCRPD the best but Cognitive Dissonance is a good runner up! @Bubbererlla
Good signs!
Good to see you Bubberella. Did you move out of the area?
I’m in Richmond. I’ve had a lot going on lately so haven’t been internetting much.
Richmond? Me too.
I didn’t realize you moved. How are you liking it down there? Cargo is our Richmonder. I hope you will stay in touch.
Well, if everybody at the Stewart rally is going to walk around being “moderate” and not advocating loudly for this or that cause, this could well turn into a Seinfeld thing. You remember that one: a whole show about….nothing. Jon ought to arrange a reunion of the Seinfeld people for this thing.
Not sure what is happening. I guess everyone will try to out moderate each other. More info coming this week. My daughter wants to go.
Stewart and Colbert will not be asking for donations. That’s the big difference here.
