Here we go again. Honestly, it’s difficult to comprehend this type of management style. But for those that don’t know, it appears Corey’s looking for another spectacle on Tuesday. Here’s the email blast he sent out to everyone and their brother.
This morning in today’s Washington Post, one of my fellow supervisors, Woodbridge Supervisor Frank Principi, proposed repealing the cracking down on illegal immigration. Please email Supervisor Principi and the whole Board at [email protected] and ask them to continue the crackdown. The vote to fund the resolution will be next Tuesday, April 29, at 2:00 p.m. at the McCoart building at 1 County Complex, Woodbridge, VA 22192. I know it may be inconvenient, but please try to attend and ask others to attend as well. Everyone will have 3 minutes to speak.

Guess we should be glad that he’s not spending the $30,000 on the postcards this time.
Chairman Stewart should just listen to the business owners that have been lining up at Citizens Time, look at the housing market, recognize the source of the resolution, view the budget constraints, pay attention to the economist, think for yourself and stop following the know-nothing that will eventually get himself thrown out of the Republican party. Distance yourself from him, distance yourself from FAIR, and distance yourself from this non-sense about filling out pieces of papers to send to a government agency that will not do anything with them. Chairman Stewart, focus on the jails so that felons don’t continue to slip through the cracks and be released back onto the street. Keep the tax rate low so that another 18 million dollars are cut from the school budget. Get rid of the part of the resolution that surely will attract litigation and put the county into a situation of having to spend money we don’t have to defend it. Then get back to our county business, by healing the wounds and working together to attract businesses and home buyers to our community.
Next Tuesday should be almost as big as an event as last summer. We need to get out there and let the Supervisor’s hear the rational voices and not allow the extremist’s to take over.
WE CANNOT AFFORD IT! It can’t take a rocket scientist to realize that the actual budget shortfall will far exceed whatever shortfall they are currently projecting.

When I first started reading and contributing to this blog, it was somewhat in the middle, but it appears to me that the blog has taken a turn to the far left and is now at the polar opposite of BVBL instead of trying to remain in the middle.
It seems to me that some have to complain just to see their words appear on the screen. The resolution hasn’t even been in place for 2 full months and everyone is crying it should be rescinded and everything put back in its place. That would be the worse thing we could do. I have said before, get off of the resolution, give it time to work and in 2 years, if the situation has not gotten any better, then stand up and complain because it has been given a fair chance to work. If it doesn’t appear to be on the right track and working in a positive way, I will be the first in line at Citizens time to get it rescinded.
I suppose you tell your children when they come across a math problem that is too hard, “Go ahead and skip it, it is OK.” I wonder what you tell your children because I can assure you, I told mine to work it out, nothing in life that is worth while is EVER easy, it takes hard work and lots of it.
The sooner you embrace the fact that PWC has a resolution in place and try to help make it work, the sooner solutions will come to light. I wish people that take up this much energy to complain about something would take just half of it and put it towards helping make sure the resolution, voted on and passed, worked.
I think most of you would complain if you were hung with a new rope!!
Quit whining and get to work finding solutions within the resolution!!

That’s not a fair assessment of where most of us are on this.
Frankly, we can’t AFFORD to wait two years! The school budget is already taking anther hit to fund this resolution! $18,000,000. I know you don’t have kids in the county schools, but I have two (3rd grade and 11th grade), and I don’t want the school budget cut another damn cent to fund this effort.
FIne, continue to fund checks in jail. That’s a pittance, and that’s worthwhile because we’re getting the worst offenders off the street. But let’s not fund the police aspect of it, because it’s a waste of their time and our MONEY.
And it’s the height of arrogance for Corey Stewart to tell Chief Deane that the county will give him what he needs to enforce this resolution, and then pull the cameras away. Hell, he advertised a $1.00/$1,000 property increase, and already he’s knocked it down to .97 in the mark-up. He won’t even fully fund his own damn resolution! 85 county employees are getting riffed, and the schools are taking an $18,000,000 hit instead.
I’m sorry, Medic, but this thing is already off the track. It needs to be stopped NOW. It’s not a question of taking the easy way out because it’s too hard, it’s stopping it because it was wrong from the get-go. FAIR and Stirrup railroaded this thing through with Corey’s help in four months, in the heat of an election campaign. They didn’t even think to bring in experts who could testify to the economic impact. In retrospect, that was a huge mistake.
This isn’t about his blog or that blog, Medic. Where is the middle, anyway? IMHO, the middle is to fund the jail and yank the rest. That’s the middle, Medic, and that’s where most of us are.
In two years my youngest kid will be starting middle school, that’s what I care about. I want this child to continue to enjoy the same high quality (and yes, I said QUALITY, because our schools are excellent) education my older kids (college and HS) received.
That’s where I’m coming from, Medic.
Principi’s principle point (in the Washington Post Article) is that we don’t need to check a person’s citizenship twice: once in the field and once at the jail. Since we do the check automatically once a person is brought to the jail, why do it twice? Chief Dean provided some interesting insight when he stated (in the article) that most people arrested would have gone to jail anyway (and their citizenship would be checked there under a Federal policy implemented this summer).
If you haven’t read this morning’s Washington Post article, you really should. The bottom line is that the reason for the Policy no longer exists. The question is whether or not our BOCS will respond to this new and very different environment and rescind the policy (as it relates to police checks) because it’s reduntant.
It’s called Business Process Improvement. In a nutshell, it just isn’t good business to do (and pay for) the same process twice.
I got the email from Corey Stewart. The man wants another showdown. He has no limits. He is out of control. He is supposed to manage the millions of dollars the county collects in taxes and he is using it as a tool in his political game. I can’t imagine that the others will go along for the ride this time. There is no election this time. Corey doesn’t have any excuses for behaving like a selfish child.
What we need to do is to focus the subject of the debate now away from “illegal” immigration to Corey Stewart’s destructive leadership and the terrible job that BOCS has been doing since Corey was elected in November 2006 as Chairman. Please don’t get distracted from all the flag waving about illegal immigration while they hide their poor performance and lack of ability. On Tuesday, we need to tell them to stop Corey’s grandstanding and start doing their job of governing.
If they go along with him like sheep again, there will be mass exodus of sane people out of the county who can’t take the GOVERNMENT GONE WILD show anymore.
Buh Bye Corey and his sheep, I’m moving my tax dollars to Fairfax.

EXACTLY! This what many of us “harpies” have been harping on for weeks! There is no legitimate reason to have the “probable cause” part of the resolution. If someone commits a crime, they are going to jail and their status will be uncovered there. There should be no reason for us to have to pay for this redundant policy that is striking fear in a segment of the population and driving away taxpayers. It is crazy. I got the e-mail too…apparently he sent it off to everyone who has emailed him recently, not just his supporters. Well, he got an email from me and so did the rest of the board, letting them know to listen to Principi and stand up with some integrity and courage to fight this waste of taxpayer dollars. Criminal illegal immigrants will be caught at the jail. That’s the bottom line. No one wants real criminals living amongst us.
They are trying to figure out what they need to change so they don’t have to buy the cameras.

That’s easy. No cameras necessary if you aren’t have police pull over and then asking for ID based on probable cause that they might be undocumented.
Problem solved. Just hope they get that.
I’m supporting Principi’s effort to rescind those parts of the resolution that don’t make economic sense. I would also support his suggestion that the county budget allocate additional funding to Neighborhood Services so that they can hire 3 additional housing inspectors to respond to resident complaints of code violations.
Fund background checks in jail and we’ll hold those criminals who’ve been arrested for felonies until ICE comes and gets them. So far, we’ve netted two, who would have been arrested and detained even without the resolution. Then, hire inspectors so we can continue to improve neighborhoods with quality of life concerns that result from code violations — which will only increase as more houses sit vacant for months at a time. We’re probably also going to have to fund a county program to mow lawns and pay for pest control in these homes. Police will have to increase patrols in neighborhoods with large numbers of vacant homes to make sure they haven’t turned into crack houses.
That’s what should be budgeted.

I have had the same experience. Just try to get any of these ladies to commit to any point of view. When asked about why this blog doesn’t have its own look and unique voice, I’m told that the admin does not want to engage in “sound bite” politics.
There is a good reason for their caginess, and time will reveal it. Who funds this effort? It would not be a stretch to assume these ladies are nothing more than shills for Mr. Fernandez and the MWB crowd–married to some of them, employing them, and funded by them. If you think the resolution has caused the schools to lose funds then you don’t understand the budget issues that affect the school system. It is typical that those who have a political axe to grind don’t constrain themselves to the facts that support their side they just invent the facts and then run around whipping others into hysteria. Sadly, it seems some people will repeat anything they hear and not bother to do the heavy lifting of researching what they post themselves. It is a distraction and it is easily taken apart.
The school deficit was not caused from the resolution in fact it is quite the opposite. ESOL enrollments have decreased over 800 student reduction since September 30th hard count. Fairfax, Loudoun and Arlington has all reported sharp increases in their ESOL populations. While the increase is large a portion of that increase should be attributed to the normal rise from immigrants moving the DC area from other parts of the country and world. Prince William reduction has resulted in over 40 teachers and staff being laid off or positions not being filled (8 positions–no savings for these eight positions since the funds were not being spent–they were just authorized) which has resulted in a savings of over $2,310,000 staffing cost alone. Factor in the cost for not needing additional classroom space in 2009, then it is another $488,000. The ESOL materials and paperwork processes accounts for another $1,400,000. Therefore the entire budget impact is a savings of $4,198,000. The downturn in the school budget is from the lower assessments which is from the mortgage meltdown not from the resolution. The data that seems to indicate that only .02% of the foreclosures (vacant abandon homes) are from the illegal immigrant community which is added to the meltdown but is not a major player. So the resolution is not causing the school district deficit of $18,000,000 and the person that posted that is just regurgitating facts that are just plain wrong no matter how you look at it.
If you want to win the argument then you have to factual with your information less you risk just looking uneducated and therefore irreverent to the discussion.
So now let me get this right. He cancels citizen time when he sees people are actually attending. The he sends out invites when he WANTS people to come to support him. Tell me this isn’t manipulating public access and taking advantage of his position as chair! If I were the other supervisors, I would be more than just angry at this point.
Dear Supervisors of all districts (except Stirrup who doesn’t even warrant an email at this point): When are you going to get some cajones and stand up to your Chair? Or are you going to let him push you around for the rest of your lives in office and ruin any credibility you might have ever had?

By the way, there is a miconception at play on this blog. Under the 287(G) program, EVERYONE brought into the jail has their citizenship status checked, regardless if the crime is a misdemeanor or a felony. So please be aware that its not just for a felony arrest, but ALL arrests that result in a criminal being brought to the Adult Detention Center.

Sorry to disappoint you, but as a matter of fact, my husband did get stopped in a traffic stop last week. He has a license, so as long as a valid license in presented, an officer won’t do any further checks. Oh, and guess what? The police officer who filled out the ticket wrote that he was a white male! I guess even our police officers don’t want to write down the actual race of the people they are stopping!

Oh, and one more thing. The people that ICE are taking in are not being deported, or if they are, it will be years away unless they are a hardened criminal. So if the guy who does get brought to the PWC jail because he is driving without a license gets taken to ICE headquarters, he will be released back into the population within days. So all our money is being spent for what again?

The main reason PWCS has to slash $18,000,000 from their budget is because Corey Stewart can’t see the forest for the trees and refuses to compromise at all on the property tax rate. Not even the advertised rate of $1.00/$1000 assessed value is satisfactory to him. He’s pissed that the rest of the board overruled him with that rate, so now he’s brought it down to .97
Couple that with the fact that we have to fund this crazy resolution out of an even smaller pie means less money for everyone, including schools.
You can slice and dice declining ESOL numbers and teacher layoffs all you want, but you know that’s not why the budget is being reduced. The PWCS went to the Board with their proposed 2008-09 budget, which included the cuts they already knew they had to make, and Corey all but told them to screw off the minute that tax rate went down to .97

Completely agree. So a few days ago he is saying he thinks the current federal immigration policy is out of sync, but he still believes that he is doing the right thing by trying to push this thing more?
The people ICE takes from our jail are not going to be deported any time soon. If they live in the County, they will be back within days. Except now they will need to report in to ICE on a monthly basis for years to come and ICE can pay their contractors to keep up with the people for the next few years until their case is decided. I really think many people honestly think that if someone is arrested for a traffic violation in PWC and PWC reports them and holds them in the jail for ICE, that they will actually be deported the following week. That is so not how it works. It’s our federal government, remember? Nothing goes quickly or easily.
Valley Girl stated that only a few people from the Lansdowne raid are still in detention (and she would know because she knew some families of the detained) and Twinad said that only 2 people are still in custody from the CMC raid and she knew people detained in that raid. The rest are back out here in the community, only now they can’t work! That’s great! So about 80 people can now no longer work, earn money to purchase items or pay taxes, they just have to count on their support network to take care of them until their case is decided, which is months if not years away. Makes wonderful sense to me!
Or they can return to their country of origin, and try to make it a better place.

Nothing has changed here, my points made from the very beginning have always been that immigration is a complicated issue. There is no black and white to this dilema. We need an overhaul on our immigration system, we need to address the chaos happening in Mexico and further South, we need to deal with the ramifications of NAFTA on the Mexican people, we need to have secure borders(north and south), we need to remember we are ALL immigrants, some of OUR ancestors were reviled when they embarked upon their American journey. I believe that the compromise is 287g in the jails.
No, I don’t want people here committing crimes or doing us harm, but that element comes with all people, it is not confined to the simplicity of “illegals”. I believe, to the very core of my being these simple words, and I am compelled to uphold their meaning, by my words and my deeds:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Thanks for the support. I actually think Emma must be Maribel…they both certainly are hateful human beings.
That’s already happening! Saw some families from Nevada and California profiled on CNN last month. When their homes foreclosed (they walked away when their mortgages adjusted and they couldn’t refinance because their homes had depreciated), they took their remaining savings, bought RVs and are living in an RV park with dozens of families in the same boat. These were people who walked away from very expensive homes and watched their version of the American dream crash and burn.

Sorry to disappoint “her” though, since he has a legal license the only way he could be suspected of being here illegally is if he actually committed a crime such as drunk driving and was hauled to jail. He won’t be though.
She seems not to realize that at least the police need “probable cause” and since he has a license there is no reason for them to check further unless they plan to check further into the status of ALL Hispanics that they stop. And if they do that, that will be racial profiling.
