115 Thoughts to “Message to Supervisors: Open Thread”

  1. BruceM

    Dear Supervisors,
Thank you for voting to repeal the probable cause portion of the Immigration Resolution. In an email last week, I had asked you to support Frank Principi and rescind the Resolution. However, I will live with this compromise. I know that you were under horrendous pressure from Greg Letiecq and his army. I’m happy to know that your commitment to the good of the county prevailed over their threats and political theatrics. I hope that we can move forward and look for real solutions in a collaborative way with input from responsible citizens. I know many people who would be interested in being part of a team of people looking for solutions.

Dear Esteemed Members of the County Board of Supervisors:

    Thank you for:

    1. Another six hour episode of Theatre of the Absurd… err, Citizens Time. (Bob Wills’ performaces give me great pleasure)

    2. Yet again shirking your responsibility and acting in a manner contrary to your fiduciary responsibility.

    3. Underfunding the Fire Department yet again. In a somewhat morbid sense, I can’t wait till someone dies because all units in a service area are tied up with multiple calls. Wally, you can be sure you will be the first I call.

    4. Appearing more a group of petulant schoolchildren than rational adults entrusted with a leadership role.

    5. Creating a set of circumstances that devalue my property even more. (Note of honesty, I’m not moving anywhere for the next couple of decades so it is argueably in my interest as it keeps my taxes lower, not so for those of you who are upside down or military personnel likely to move in the short term.)

    6. Giving Greg more air-time, maybe this will lead to an endorsement deal with a company that manufactures strait-jaackets or tasers so that he might actually be able to afford a tie, iron or dry cleaning bill. (Hey at least Lafayette took the constructive criticism and applied it, funny how she doesn’t write on BVBL anymore, Hmmm, I sense an escape from the cult compound)

    7. Spending more time during one session on a single issue than you have spent on road and transportation issues (aside from crying about the emasculation of the NVTA) since the election. FIX OUR DAMN ROADS!!!! (sorry for yelling but not much seems to get through Marty and Wally’s skulls, must be too busy whispering in each other’s ears or playing footsie under the table.)

I could continue but unlike you elected clowns, I have actual work to do, and I actually intend to do it.

  3. Bring it On

Well, everyone seems happy with the way it went last night. Since Corey is claiming vicotory and we too got we asked for then I guess it’s a win-win situation for everyone involved. I’m happy that the board came together in this way to have a realistic workable compromise that does away with the problematic ‘probable cause’ portion of the resolution.

  4. Kenneth Reynolds

I guess i agree with both of these messages. I am VERY disappointed with what they are doing….first the idiocy of the resolution………which is famous for its spread of bigotry……and little or nothing as a piece of legislation…..and now sticking their noses into the Group Homes to pay off political favors is beyond belief……..its like they are a bunch of zombies from somewhere else. We have to do something…..i guess keep the heat on….Thank you for the blog…you guys are great!!! KR

  5. Helen/AnonForNow

    Dear Supervisors,
Thank you for rescinding the truly racist portion of the Racist Resolution. Also, I wish you had raised my taxes so that you can continue to fund the boys’ home and senior day care center. It is troubling to me that you found it so easy to cut programs that help children and the elderly and found it so hard to cut a program that institutionalizes racism against 20% of our county’s population.

    Chairman Stewart,
I am deeply troubled by your aggressive political tactics and your compulsive need to look like you’re always winning. You lost yesterday. Yes, he’s a freshman and yes, he’s a Democrat. Accept it. Stop trying to spin it like you won. It’s pathetic and transparent. Stop seeking media attention and seek out professional counseling. Your narcissistic personality disorder is hurting me and my family very directly. i will contribute money to your mental health assistance fund.

  6. TWINAD

    Helen/Anon for Now,

    Awesome!

  7. notGregLetiecq

Helen/AnonForNow has a great idea. Forget the legal assistance fund. Let’s give to the Corey Stewart mental health assistance fund. Another thought. Since we can’t recall/impeach Stewart, let’s have him determined mentally unfit to govern.

  8. park'd

As long as you guys keep calling those of us who support the resolution racists then there can never be a compromise and we can never move forward. Illegals have destroyed my town and all of our property values by swooping in, trashing the place, buying up houses or having their legal friends/family buy houses and then boarding from them and then abandoning them when the illegal jobs all dried up, ignoring our cultural norms and our laws and basically making nuisances of themselves. I know if someone calls me a racist for feeling the way that I do then I will have nothing to do with them and will most likely give them a knuckle sandwich for their trouble. If you are a citizen of my country and that your future plans and financial stability have been gravely affected because of illegals like mine and many other Americans and you still tell me that you support illegal immigration and feel that we are being racist then I will shake your hand and call you a better man than me but I hardly feel that any of you illegal supporters have been put into any kind of financial bind from their presence or else you would all be rethinking your allegiance.

I think the BOCS decision was a fair one, but I have doubts that the Chief of Police will ever truly enforce it now and he will actively work behind the scenes to make sure that his officers’ discretion always leans towards not checking legal status.

  9. Dear Supervisors,

Thank you and congratulations for making the right decision. The suspension of “Probable Cause” is a wise and courageous measure.

I hope in coming days you will show similar courage and leadership if/when local anti-immigrant extremists try to blame Chief Deane for the wise decision you have made. Please explain to your constituents that it was your decision to repeal “Probable Cause,” and please explain to them why you did so.

Just because the same inaccuracies are emailed to you a thousand times, it doesn’t make them true. The steps you took yesterday prove that you know that. But our community cannot fully heal until someone steps forward to explain this to the agitated minority that brought us so much discord. To do this, you must contradict what is untrue, and explain what is true. To do this, you must be prepared to be criticized. You can take it.

  10. TWINAD

    Park’d,

While I read your previous post and do feel for your situation…this is not the first time property values have fallen precipitously in this area. I bought a condo in Bull Run in Manassas in 1990 for $120K. Within 5 years, other Owner’s sold for as low as $75K. The value did not recover until 2002, at which time I sold for about $10K more than I paid for it. At the height of the market, that unit sold for about $300K. Probably could sell for upper 100’s now. What I’m saying is, the market goes in cycles. I sure as hell hope the market doesn’t stay down as long as it did in the 90’s, but it definitely could. Back in the early 90’s everyone was upside down, too. This is nothing new in real estate and is part of the reason I didn’t sell my current home at the height…I was too worried I’d buy another house at the top of the market…I’m 41 years old…I don’t want to have a $400K mortgage at my age. Will values in the Park ever recover? Probably, but not in the next 10 years if I was to place a bet. It took 12 years for my condo to recover it’s value enough for me to pay a realtor to sell it.

  11. TH

    Park’d,
People are called racists if they make racist comments. If you say you support the resolution, I would ask you why but I wouldn’t imply that you are racist just because you support something.
In your comments I can see that you support the resolution because you cannot deal with the cultural differences that your neighbors brought.
A racist comment is to imply that by looking at a person they are here illegally. If you have that skill, ICE has a job for you because you are the only person who has those special powers to determine legal status. Did you actually checked that the people living there didn’t have papers? I doubt it. You look at their different culture and that it is good enough for you to determine legal status. Is that racism? I don’t know, you tell me

  12. park’d,

I’m not sure if it qualified as racism per se as opposed to bigotry towards people who had different cultural norms. They come from countries without zoning restrictions like ours. Something should have been done, but exiling the whole community was way over the top. It also qualifies as bigotry in my book. You might not care what color their skin is, but you do care they seem to be part of this group that is behaving in ways you don’t like. So you bring down the hammer on the whole group rather than individuals. That is bigotry.

  13. park'd

Do any of you share in my concerns and my troubles or are you all passing your judgment from your gated communities?

If someone speaks no English, won’t look you in the eye, slinks away from you and wants to rent a room for the night then they might be an illegal to coin Jeff Foxworthy.

As I’ve said before, unless you’re living in the middle of the housing nightmare brought on, at least in my case, by illegal immigrants, then you should keep your opinions to yourself. Blogging from your 800k house in Clifton seems very disingenuous at best.

  14. Mando

    @park’d

The thing is, they don’t share our concerns or troubles. They have no idea what it’s like to live in the thick of the flophouses. The only time they see it is when they’re on safari going through the hood. They’re addicted to the economic crack that is illegal immigration and the resolution is chasing away the dealers.

  15. Alanna

    park’d-
We lived in the City of Manassas for 12 years and then moved to Haymarket 5 years ago. We have experienced a 28% loss in our home value and it has nothing to do with any of my neighbors becuase no house has sold in our neighborhood for the past 2 years.

  16. Red Dawn

I think the Park APPEARS ( key word/opinion) to be out of control to me as far as the MC mansions and additions. I wonder how a lot of those houses passed inspection of building codes, etc. I would have to take time and look into certain properties with the setback restriction, etc. but seriously…

  17. Not Me, Bubba

    Park’d

You don’t know that people here are posting from Clifton, let alone an 800K home.

I share your concerns as well, but the cultural aspect is the least important part of this whole mess. My life will not be bothered if my neighbors have a cinco de mayo party, go to catholic church, or speak Spanish. However, if they keep treating their home like a 3rd world tenament slum it is our business.

  18. Anonimo

Its about time you broke free from your puppeteer BOS.

  19. Red Dawn

    Park’d,

Also you say that the real tax assessment rate is are the highest in the state.
I recall a 9 bedroom house on Denver St. Tell me how a house on that street was allowed to be converted and advertised as such. The question would be did it get assessed accordingly? With stuff like that happening it affects everyone around.
I would see that as a serious flaw. I will do some research on the house in particular and see if I can answer my own questions. There is another house almost identical in appearance and scenario on Lomond St., in the county.

  20. twinad,

all of this coming from a person who supposedly has an illegal alien relative living here? not like you dont have something personally to gain from all this! you are aiding and abetting a criminal and the sad thing about it is that you admit too it and are actually proud of it. people like you should be deported as well.

    April 30, 2008 Washington Times

By Arlo Wagner – The Prince William Board of County Supervisors last night approved an addition to its 2-month-old crackdown on illegal immigrants, considered one of the most aggressive in country.

With the board’s decision, county police can verify the immigration status of anyone they arrest, even for minor infractions such as speeding or jaywalking. Before, they needed probable cause to think the person was in the country illegally.

Supervisor Frank J. Principi, Woodbridge Democrat, said earlier this month that he wanted to repeal the legislation that allowed the crackdown, in part because the board voted to strip $3.1 million earmarked for cameras in police cruisers from the roughly $6.5 million budgeted to enforce the new policies next year. He said the cut would result in a lack of civil rights protections.

The vote followed more than six hours of testimony from about 100 people, who were split on the issue.

“If [people] enter our country illegally, they should be deported, whether they are a criminal or not,” said Walter Menz of Woodbridge.

Said Jeanne Mitche of Dumfries: “I have been deeply saddened by what I have seen happen to Prince William County.”

Board Chairman Corey A. Stewart led the effort to crack down on illegal immigrants.

“This will increase the number of people who will have their immigration status checked,” the Republican said after the vote.

The board approved the resolution in October, denying county-funded public services to illegal immigrants and authorizing police to check the immigration status of a detainee when they have probable cause to think the person violated immigration laws.

A motion by Mr. Principi that would allow police to check the immigration status of a suspect only after the person is put in jail was defeated on a 7-1 vote earlier in the evening.

The enforcement began March 3 after officers were trained by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

As of April 1, police said they had had contact with 89 illegal immigrants and that 46 received a ticket but were not arrested or detained.

As local governments across the country face tight budgets as the result of the slowing economy, the cost of the police training, housing those arrested and the price of the cameras likely will continue to be an issue.

Park’d, I’ve lived in conditions somewhat similar to yours. Once when my DH and I were students, we bought a condo in Fairfax for $23,000. The neighbors kept stopping by and asking what we paid for our unit because they had paid $35,000 two years earlier. After several break-ins in the unit behind us (these condos shared attic space), we put it on the market and sold it for $28,000 eight months after we bought it. That’s the last time I ran from a crummy neighborhood, but it’s not the last time I’ve lived in one.

When we bought our present house, the three nearest houses were vacant rentals. There have been a variety of tenants – druggies, Pagans (bikers), a schizophrenic who lit up the whole neighborhood with her security lights, regular families, people who overcrowded their house to the point where the drainfield failed and they were forced to kick a few buddies out (these were all white, BTW), one guy who had eight VWs in the front yard (zoning took care of that), one guy who tried to run his business off the road (zoning took care of that also). Now only one is a rental unit. But, I like the variety of people in my neighborhood and although I could afford a McMansion, I opt to stay where I am. That’s not to say I haven’t been mightily pi$$ed off in the past, but I’ve found that I can outlast the problem tenants. The guy next to me now has two boats and a busted car in the front yard but he’s quiet, doesn’t have yappy dogs, and brings me trout from his fishing trips.

How are things in general in your neighborhood? Have the problems (excluding the next door unit) lessened in the past year? Will your development participate in a spring clean-up or yard sale or other activity that gives people a chance to throw away trash and clean things up?

  23. Slowpoke Rodriguez

Maybe both sides can live with this for a while?

  24. TWINAD

    Censored,

I love your “wide paint roller” analogy when some people have talked about the gross living conditions of their “illegal” neighbors. In our middle class neighborhood, our house and yard (the one occupied by an “illegal”) are considered the envy of the neighborhood. We have had more than one neighbor come over to ask my husband how he got the lawn so green and weed free (hint: it took a lot of work…he dug out every dandelion by hand for weeks before he got them all). Our next door neighbors have not cut their grass once yet this year. And they’ve got two able bodied grandchildren living with them that could do it…they certainly have the time…they are unemployed, but apparently they just don’t care. Not ALL illegal immigrants live in deplorable conditions. My husband runs a service business and has actually told me he has wanted to vomit when he has seen the interior of some houses he has had to work in. People who live in filth come in all colors.

TWINAD, it sounds as though some of my neighborhood problems have been similar to Park’d’s and all of the people involved except one have been white and most of them were PWC natives. That’s why I can’t stand the talk about how “illegal aliens” are ruining neighborhoods. I certainly haven’t found that to be the case. Bad neighbors come in all varieties just as good neighbors do.

  27. Mom

Sicko or genuinely concerned that the operational capacity of several stations is approaching double that recommended. This is an issue that all members of the BOCS are keenly aware of yet continue to ignore at budget time. If they are going to continue to allow growth in the residential and commercial sector at the pace they have in recent years, collecting proffers dedicated to the FD with each application, then they need to use those proffer monies to construct adequate FD facilities and realize that those facilities will require a correspondening increase in the personnel budget line item. It’s not that they don’t realize this but that they don’t actually do anything about it. The earlier remark is merely a reflection of the inevitable consequence of their failure to do anything. A parallel can be drawn to the signalization of dangerous intersections, they talk and wring their hands about funding improvements, often blaming the developers but do nothing until somebody dies at the intersection, then in a very public and conspicuous manner they suddenly find the money to remedy the situation and boast how they serve the public.

The only thing that is deplorable and disgraceful is the manner in which the BOCS and their minions operate.

I live in a neighborhood with many Hispanic families. They all keep their homes in immaculate condition and have lovely lawns. The only house in my neighborhood that is in sad condition is the one that was abandonded about a year ago. It is in foreclosure.

I live in an older subdivision and I have lived in my neighborhood for over 30 years. My husband became ill. The neighbors I have had for over 30 years never even came to my house to see how we were doing or to see if we needed anything. My Hispanic neighbors came. They brought food and took care of the lawn because my husband was too ill and I had to work and take care of him and all his medical needs. I was overwhelmed to say the least.

As I stood in my front yard one day talking to one of my Hispanic neighbors I mentioned I was going to try to get the house painted in the spring. When I arrived home from work the next day, the family was scraping and caulkling my house and painted the entire thing. They would not take one penny.

The 4 Hispanic men who lived up the street noticed that the garage needed a new roof and without me even asking one Saturday they put a new roof on it. Again, they would take no money. When I told them they were so kind and told them they did not need to do all the wonderful things they had done for me. They replied “But we are neighbors”.

I still can’t believe my Hispanic neighbors kindness and generosity.

Maybe everyone should get to know a Hispanic person or family personally and find out how kind, loving and generous they are. Maybe if everyone did that our immigrants would be seen as human beings to be respected and treated with dignity rather than being demeaned and faceless.

A very touching story, Still Awed. You leave out one significant detail, however. The Resolution has nothing whatsoever to do with Hispanic immigrants. We’re talking about ILLEGAL residents–i.e. lawbreakers.

Yes, all Hispanics are lovely and generous (especially when they’re doling out free or cheap labor, from which you have directly benefitted, apparently), and all white people who respect the law are racist. We get that loud and clear.

Had the cameras passed, we would not be able to claim the “probable cause” portion of the resolution had been amended to include checking immigration status only after arrest!

Mrs. Caddigan, thank you for trying to look out for the schools. I only wish that all 8 of the supervisors prioritized schools. The schools will be suffering again next year.

Supervisors Nohe and Principi, Thank you for having the courage to stand up for what was right and to stand your ground.

Supervisors Stirrup and Stewart, please consider who you are friends with. Enough bullying has gone on in this county to last a lifetime. A man is judged by the company he keeps. Please take those words to heart. Country-folk say when you wallow with hogs you get mud on you. Either way works. you choose.

To all 8 supervisors, for whatever reasons you voted as you did, thank you. It is time to move forward. All of you must be pretty special supervisors if you can walk away from a controversial issue and have all parties happy. It doesn’t get any better than that.

  41. anon

Some of the stories about Hispanic neighbors are nice. Mine isn’t so nice. While I was on vacation one member of the Hispanic household next to me (townhouse) was caught breaking and entering into my house. When I came back, I identified what was stolen (2 laptops, a camera, and some other less expensive items). By that time, that person had disappeared, and the other 14 residents (yes, the Manassas City Police tell me there are 14 other residents) claim they do not know where he went.

Nice neighbors! So I supppose I’m supposed to explain to them that maybe it is not nice to steal from your neighbor? If this person wasn’t probably an illegal immigrant I’m sure he wouldn’t have fled, and the other folks wouldn’t be claiming they don’t know where he went (not very likely).

Now, since I had hailstorm damage within the past 3 years, my insurance rate has increased, not to mention I’m out my $500 deductible.

I guess you can see why I don’t share the views of some about getting to know their neighbors – illegal immigrant or not. Actually, I suspect if this person was a legal immigrant, he wouldn’t have broken into my house, and wouldn’t have fled between the time my house was broken into and when I got back from vacation. One of my other neigbhors spotted him and 3 others – which the 3 others they could not for sure identify as being inhabitants of the townhouse next to mine.

So that’s my story. If it happened to some of the others on this board, I wonder how you would feel, and if you would be in support of the resolution. Yes, this is in the City of Manassas, but since it is surrounded by PWC, I feel the resolution will help things within the city too – as everyone needs to pass through PWC to get to the city. In fact, I’m just barely within the city limits, actually.

Your story is wonderful, yet several people suggested that something was wrong with you for thinking so! I think that is the best evidence yet that some people just do not have any compassion at all. Zero. It’s confounding. They find a way to twist something beautiful and make it ugly. That is just their nature, and all we can do is pity any children they may have brought into the world and possibly poisoned against good nature. It’s sad.

    Elvis,

You are simply not correct on all counts. Elena is nothing like Greg. End of discussion.

Emma is on probation here. She knows why. Those for whom she has so much distain asked that she not be permanently banned. End of discussion.

There have been no comments deleted here. An address of an HSM member was deleted by the admin. Another sentence was deleted that gave out private information about an elected official’s children. It was the opinion of the owner of the blog that it was the right thing to do. End of discussion.

We try to stick to issues not personalities here. We are not 100% but that is the goal. Elvis, please help us achieve that goal.
