Done some SPRING cleaning and feeling it’s time for a change. Let’s see if we can work with this ‘template’. It needs some tweaking so please be patient. Also, I am including 3 permanent pages on the top navigation, an ‘About’ page, a ‘Solutions’ page and a ‘Wacky Comment’ page. Feedback welcome.

I’m pretty sure Alanna is going to take us on quite a wild and crazy roller coaster ride while she retools the blog. 🙂

  4. I love it!!! You’re terrific!

  5. Alanna

Well, I have taken you full circle. We are more or less back to where we started. I have another idea, if everyone can give me until Monday, we’ll hopefully get something we can work out.

    Thanks.

  6. Emma

Your own unique look? That’s encouraging.

Can I come back to the table, Mom?

  7. elvis

ooohhh! So exiting! This site must be run by women, they keep changing the decor!

  8. Moon-howler

    Elvis,

I think she put it back so you wouldn’t bump your shins.

The X chromosome just makes ’em do it.

  9. Moon-howler

Only if you promise to eat all your peas! (hands on hips)

  19. Elena

I am a firm believer in positive surroundings improve attitude!

    Emma,
Everyone is welcome here, it’s just important to remember that behind each “pretend” screen name is a real person, real feelings, real lives. Did you notice when Park’d shared their story with people here, no one attacked, we all appreciated his/her difficult position and tried to offer solutions, or at a bare minimum empathized.

  20. Gardener

One request, would you increase the font size for us older viewers?

  21. Luckyduck

I must admit, things are much more friendly on this blog. I was a contributor on the other and there was no other stance but their stance. While I have (some) things in common with some people on the the other and (some) things in common with some people on this one, I do not always agree with people on both and people do not always agree with me. But I have been impressed by the overall civility that allows give and take to happen here. It allows a discussion instead of an arugment.

  22. Emma

You’re right,Elena. It’s easy to forget you’re not just talking to “cyberspace.”

    Sorry, Twinad 🙁

  23. Elena

Glad to hear you feel this way Lucky Duck!

    Gardner,
    Good idea!

  24. Moon-howler

Luckyduck, I totally agree with you. I am in the same boat you are. I don’t feel ‘one set way’ And I don’t feel like there is a party line here.

Gardner, that is a great idea. Visually challenged here. There is a % button on the bottom of IE that allows you to increase the print size. Bottom right hand corner of your browser.

  25. Elvis, do you come here BECAUSE you think it’s all women? : )

  26. Here’s a nice little story about Manassas twisting the issues:

    http://www.insidenova.com/isn/news/local/article/manassas_bans_illegal_immigrants_as_peddlers/14883/

    My comments:

So I assume they are going to check the citizen status of ALL street peddlers applying? Or are we looking at selective checking on people who look or speak differently?

And if health concerns were REALLY the issue here, wouldn’t they have just made ALL applicants provide documentation of immunizations before granting licenses?

But you see, the issue isn’t health concerns, nor is it licensure, nor is it anything else the city wants to pretend it is. Once again, it’s “let’s target people we don’t like.”

  27. maribel

kgo….and Manassas City now bans illegal alien pedlers. HOORAY!. What a great week its been for defending and upholding the rule of law against illegal alien law breakers. I’ve resumed my morning walks and NO more trash, soiled diapers, empty Corona bottles, and lewd remarks from passersby. GOOD RIDANCE to those that saw to disrespect and trash my neighborhood. All that’s left are three abandoned houses with grass a foot high. I think we neighbors are going to do some grass cutting in an effort to restore our hood to the clean, well kept subdivision that it once was. AHHH, I smell CLEAN FRESH AIR NOW! ABAJO CON LOS LIBERALES SOCIALISTAS….you know who you are! Also kgo….there you go twisting things again in your twisty, crusty little mind. You poor lady, you must live in a myoptic world of goblins and boogey men…..you can’t stand to see the law enforced…everything you see is “racist, bigotted, xenophobic, targeted”….YOU NEED HELP!!!!!!!!

  28. Moon-howler

I would be all in favor of banning all residential solicitation in PWC. I don’t want people coming door to door peddling their wares. I don’t want people pushing food carts up and down my street. This is a residential neighborhood, not an open air market. I think that is pretty fair. Extend it to all people. That discriminates against everyone.

Equal opportunity and proud of it.

  29. Juturna

    MH
    Even Girl Scout Cookies? 🙁

  30. MH, maybe that’s how it should be. Why allow it at all except on parade days?

Of course, what about ball games and other public events? Do you think merchants should be banned there too?

  31. Maribel, Maribel, Maribel……sigh. You poor blind creature. Close your window shades. You might actually be letting some light in and that apparently would be bad for your health.

  32. Luckyduck

Actuallly Kgotthardt, its a federal law that the city must deny a commerical permit to someone who is in the country illegally. The city official quoted the federal law in doing so. What would you have the city official do, ignore the federal law at his/her peril?

By the way, the county also follows the federal law and checks status. This has been going on for years before this became an issue because its required to do so.

  33. Elena

Sorry if people’s postings were delayed in going up, I forgot to check until just now 🙂 I think with Admin working on some changes, several people’s postings were delayed. I’ll do better tomorrow ! See what happens when an amateur is a fill in for the weekend 😉

  34. “What would you have the city official do, ignore the federal law at his/her peril?” No. I’d have them stop saying things like, “All of a sudden, we are going to stop giving these licenses because of health concerns.” What’s that? Another way of saying, “Immigrants bring disease”?

And again, if health is their primary concern as they claim it is, then they should be having health inspections on every vendor.

It’s not so much the law I have a problem with but the spin….”let’s make the anti-immigrant crowd happy by telling them what they want to hear” instead of saying, “Ooops. We should have been doing this all along but weren’t.” Do you see what I am saying here?

  35. And Lucky, you didn’t answer my question.

Will EVERY applicant have his/her citizen status checked, or just those who talk with an accent or don’t look “white”?

  36. Emma

Wow, the healthcare professional part of me thinks that no one should be able to peddle food unlicensed and unproven to be following health codes, etc. But the adventurous part of me went to Bangkok last summer and ate some of the most awesome street food–hot fried bananas (the best snack ever!!!!) and pad thai–my friends were horrified when I told them about it, but it was some of the best food I’ve ever eaten, and somehow I survived.

Goes to show you that even food can be a complicated issue.

  37. Nothing is easy, is it Emma?

And no, if we went to another country, we would be taking our chances if we ate from a street vendor……or drinking unbottled water, for that matter. Not that our own water always lives up to expectations…..

  38. Luckyduck

Well in the County, EVERY applicant has to produce proof of citizenship. Each applicant, regardless of what they look like or sound like has to prove their status. Each person undergoes a criminal background check too. Its a process carried out by county employees and its applied to everyone. So I assume that answers the question? I am not a city resident so I won’t comment on their process.

But I disargee with your comment that its applied to “people we don’t like”. Its the law to demonstrate citizenship and in the County its evenly applied to each applicant. I would have to believe that in today’s politically charged environmenet the city would be following the letter of the law.

  39. A PW County Resident

    So, solutions is where?

  40. I just hope they are following it for everybody, not just immigrants. The way that article was worded, it sounded like immigrants were being pegged as “dirty.”

I understand the law and am not arguing about that. Do you think if there wasn’t a goof-up they would even be announcing this sudden strict adherence to the law? I doubt it. It’s just politically convenient right now to do so.

It really bugs me when laws are only followed or enforced when it’s politically or economically convenient. Either enforce it or fix it, but don’t be a damn hypocrite pandering to whatever group is popular at the time.

  41. Casual Observer

    PW Res,
Alanna had a template for the new design up very briefly the other night, while I happened to be online. She had the Solutions! Thread prominently and permanently displayed across the top, and it opened to the thread when I clicked on it. My guess is since she went to the trouble to incorporate it into the templates, it’ll stay in the final version. She’s hoping for Monday.

  42. Emma

I get the sense that this was purely coincidental, just in time for summer peddlers for construction crews, for example(if there are such things these days). The City of Manassas is treading very carefully these days, and about half the city council seems very scared of litigation, which is why the Wall still stands. The intention seems to be to apply the rules evenly in this case.

Just point me to the fried-banana cart…

  43. Luckyduck

Whether or not they are following the law or applying the process is very easy to check. All applications are kept on file regardless of approval or disapproval. Although there are a variety of reasons for anyone to be denied a vending or taxi or wrecker permit (take your pick), someone who is of illegal status would automatically be denied. As would an individual with certain types of criminal activity in their background. I am not sure I get your point… if someone who is legal was asked to prove status, it’d be easy enough for the County to show ALL of the applications to demonstrate they asked it of everyone.

  44. That’s all I’m saying…..that it has to be done across the board if it’s being done at all. And I have to wonder if that’s what happened, but that’s me. I always wonder.

But again….what about this “health concern”? Why even say they have a health concern when this has never come up before? And why point it towards immigrants? Do you see what I’m saying?

  45. Luckyduck

Yes, I see your point. But the article stated that it was the citizens who expressed health concerns, not the city. No where in the article does the city representative mention health concerns.

You know, for a conspiracy theory like you are proposing – County employees asking only people “they don’t like” as you said, there would have to be complicity all the way up the County bureaucracy as such permit applications are reviewed and retained for easy access to anyone with a lawyer or a FOIA. Come on..have at least a little faith in the everyday civil servant. By the way, check out the variety of peoples who work for the County. Its hardly a good old boy southern network.

  46. Okay, so the citizens express health concerns and the city responds. Now, I know they have to respond, but they can spin a little better, can’t they, and say something like they will check everyone’s health record? When they don’t say something like that, it looks like they are giving into the big-mouth-bigots. (Yeah, I said it again. Go ahead and bash me now.)

Yes, we can FOIA the license apps. That’s Elena’s job, isn’t it? : ) Elena, aren’t you FOIA queen?

Now if you want to argue about the “good ‘ole boys club,” we can easily tear away at the BOCS. Hello? I don’t exactly see diversity there, do you?

I have more faith in general civil servants than I do politicians and upper management. Sorry. Just who I am. It would be nice to be able to trust these people, but we can’t. If we assume they are just going to do the “will of the people” we are going to end up sadly disappointed as many of us are now.

    Vigilance……

  47. WOW! It’s way past my bed time. Talk at ya later, gater!

  48. Luckyduck

Kgotthardt, they don’t check health for vendor permit applicants. I didn’t get from the article that the city was spinning it but we may just look at it differently.

The county staff is a wide variety of different peoples. Did you know that 2 of the Assistant County Execs are female? They are appointed based upon their merits and expertise. The BOCS are elected…if you’re not happy with the make up – get the votes and change it. The elections are not rigged, so a majority of people in their districts elected those individuals. We are a democracy in each little district and in my opinion that does not point towards a good old boy network.

By the way, I don’t think I’ve ever bashed you or anyone else. Not the way my mother raised me.

  49. Kenneth Reynolds

Getting the votes and changing anything is near impossible. Voting in the districts is based mainly on the soundbites of the day…….how else would Stewart haver gotten elected? People just dont seem to study the issues in any depth……and most of them ….like last year……didnt go out to vote……..70% stayed home……….situation is too bad……..and it wont change as long as so many vvoters work somewhere else and do not hve the time to focus on such thing……………..

  50. Moon-howler

I don’t want anyone pounding on my door trying to sell anything. I don’t think in this day and age kids should be going door to door. It isn’t safe.

I have no problem with licensed street vendors in business areas of town. I can stop or I can not stop. At my house, my privacy in invaded. And I don’t want anyone trying to sell me their freaking religion either. My own or lack thereof is just fine with me. That means no boys on bikes or watchtower pushers.
