9500Liberty will present a special screening to mark the 1st anniversary of Prince William County’s Immigration Resolution.

Thursday July 10th, 7:00 PM
Casablanca Restaurant 7911 Centreville, RD, Manassas, VA

9500Liberty is cutting together an hour-long presentation featuring recent events, many of which are too politically sensitive to share on YouTube. The screening will challenge some of the misleading rhetoric that has been circulating in recent days and weeks, and will include some surprising footage that could shift Prince William County’s political landscape for the better.

We hope to see you there! Make sure to invite your friends!

375 Thoughts to “A Special Screening of 9500 Liberty Documentary”

  1. If “Hate Bunnies” is the worst thing that’s been uttered on this blog, I’m sure I could offer about a thousand worse things on the other blog. “Hate Bunnies” is just a loving way to refer to people who don’t bother to read the article that is the topic of a thread, but feel no shame in leaving little droppings of anti-immigrant rhetoric … having nothing to do with the subject other than we are all trying to figure out how to deal with hateful people.

When I wrongly included someone who was not a Hate Bunny in the Hate Bunnies list, I got called out on it by Moon-howler and others and then I apologized.

  2. TWINAD

    Alanna,

I second the 19:01 post. The people that are “allowed” to post on the Other Blog cannot even thinly disguise their racism. I’ve seen people over there rant and rave because they don’t like the fact that Lowe’s, Home Depot and Shopper’s Food Warehouse have the audacity to display signage in their stores that are not solely IN ENGLISH! Oh, the horror of having some signage in two languages. It is enough for some of these people to refuse to go there anymore. That is ridiculous and shows the type of narrowmindedness (if that’s a word) of the people that live over there.

  3. Alanna

    stw,
“Hispanics are racist lawbreakers, who steal from citizens and hate America”

It took me all of 5 seconds to find this one. Hmmm. Who could have said such a thing?

  4. Red Dawn

oh speaking of name calling fat broads don’t cry…LOL

  5. Emma

that was too painful, red dawn.

  6. Red Dawn

    Emma,

LOL…I think WE ( including him) all needed visine after WATCHING to see if a tear fell… 😉 You should have seen the look on my husbands face…..PRICELESS!

  7. Off topic, but the Home Depot people were really nice to me when I went in to buy planting stuff this past spring. I discovered if I went right to the cashier and asked that they call someone, I got someone. Excellent customer service–they even loaded my van : )

  8. SecondAlamo

Hey, while you guys were battering one another 150 more illegals just slipped across the border. Just thought I’d try to get you back on point.

  9. Censored bybvbl

Emma, I don’t know how one would make a film, short, infomercial, news blip, ad or any other type of video without cutting. Haha…except home movies which most people would prefer to be cut. It’s the nature of the beast. Consider how much film footage Eric has…much of it made in public so we certainly have the opportunity to see how his version stacks up against our own. I wish you’d attend and then make up your mind.

When I wrote for cash, I always had limited column space. I had to edit for space. Most of us edit here for brevity…except a couple well-known exceptions.

MH, put me on your list of the censored. I wasn’t banned but my posts frequently disappeared.

  10. Does SA stand for Second Alamo or Smart Ass?

    : )

  11. Red Dawn

    Second Alamo,

And there isn’t a damn thing we could do about it. It is our Fed Gov that needed to do something a LONG time ago. So, lets all just have fun as tomorrow is never promised.

  12. anon-100

Moon-howler, Would you like me to bring pictures to the screening of Eric hiding in the bushes? He really does that. Like he’s going to catch HSM members doing something wrong. I will let all of you know the day laborer’s are treated with respect when we are there. Even when I am called a Puta, a F@#*ing B…, I don’t say a word back and ignore them. So does everyone else.

If someone walks by we say hi, good morning, etc.

  13. Red Dawn

    Anon-100 aka Maureen,

I have only know you to be respectful too. I say bring it and lets all discuss it.

I can’t help it…..all this stuff makes me think of this song 🙂

  14. TWINAD

    Anon-100,

Do you honestly have nothing better to do than that? That’s sad. There are so many ways you can volunteer and really make a difference in life. Feed hungry children, volunteer to read to children or help illiterate adults, work in a soup kitchen, work in a church thrift shop, help with Habitat for Humanity. Get an actual job. But you feel your time is best spent trying to deter men from getting a job for the day? How you can justify spending hours standing in front of a 711 is beyond my comprehension and I’m not stupid.

  15. Anon-100, then WHY GO THERE? To intimidate? I’d probably call you names, too!

  16. stw

    Twin –
Because Anon is free to do as she pleases. You certainly can choose to do all those things you mentioned in your post….but do you? Just curious.

  17. Red Dawn

I smell a good time to be had on Thursday night. It will start with nervousness, skepticism, conviction ,giggles, fears, tears and HOPEFULLY a dance that leads to better understanding.
I want to toast the first CHEERS to my ( OUR ) hometown

  18. anon-100

TWINAD, You don’t know what my community service record is. It is very extensive to say the least. Have I once questioned any of you on what you do? NO. Just because I think differently than you do doesn’t mean that you should belittle what I do. In America we are allowed to do as we wish as long as we are not breaking the law. BTW, I do have a job.

kgotthardt, I have never been nasty to you and what you choose to call me means absolutely nothing to me.

  19. Moon-howler

I fail to see the objective for going there. Help me understand.

Anon, do you really feel that Eric thinks he is hiding from you or that you cannot see him? I do photography as a hobby and I always end up standing in the bushes or on the side of a hill to get the shot I want. Have you asked him why he is in the bushes since you all are out there speaking to everyone?

  20. Leila

Wow, this took a while to scroll! When I read “cutting together an hour-long presentation,” I just assumed that like many documentarians not yet finished with their project, Eric and Annabel have produced different versions for different times for different goals before the completed work. They have already done more than most documentary filmmakers in presenting countless clips on Youtube so we can see the work in progress. I would assume all those clips will continue to exist even after the final cut. All this is vastly more transparent than many who work in docs.

I wish I could come see it.

  21. Emma

Twinad, it’s reasonable to also ask whether Eric has anything better to do than stalk HSM members and covertly film them. What does this guy do for a living wage? I wish I had that kind of time.

  22. Lucky Duck

Good for the film-makers, information can’t hurt, so what’s wrong with more of it being available? Whether you agree with the perspective or not, its information. I have learned from both sides in this debate and hopefully will continue to do so. Regardless of what side you are on, if you only listen to yours, what have you really learned? How do you know your side is correct without debate?

  23. Leila

Emma, have you never Googled Eric Byler?! If you want the Cliff Notes version of all his previous and ongoing films, awards, etc., try his Wikipedia entry.

Or is it more fun not knowing?

As for covert filming, have you looked at the dozens and dozens of clips at 9500 Liberty on youtube? Is that how you would characterize the vast majority of material?

  24. Moon-howler

I am still trying to figure out why HSM is out there at the 7-11 to start with. No one has answered my question. Why is it up to them to be there?

My fear is that eventually someone will get hurt. I have not known daylaborers to arbitrarily call someone ‘puta’ without reason. And yes, plenty of people have had the opportunity to hit me with the puta word. Funniest thing, it has never happened in Spanish. Plenty of times in English, but never in Spanish.

My suggestion would be to leave monitoring day laborers to the experts–the people paid and trained to do the job.

  25. Elena

Eric and Annabel are decent, fair ,and honorable people, concerned about a county that was headed in a direction that was extremely unhealthy. Their efforts as filmmakers, video taping the unfolding story, has been integral in showing the truth. Greg wasn’t fed those lines from his infamous interview, HE willingly shared them. No one falsley accused GREG of posting a thread about “criminal illegal aliens” being dog food, HE did that. And please, don’t even get me started about the racist overt demonizing of hispanics on BVBL, if you still don’t get it, you never will.

Lucky Duck, I couldn’t have said it better, if you only listen, or are interested in your myopic perspective, you will never have a full understanding of where the truth may actually lie.

  26. Leila

    What she said.

I do have a worry about these filmmakers though (who I had never heard of before 9500 Liberty). It is that they will stay with the issue and the community politics after they are done. I hope it isn’t just a project because too many lives have been affected.

  27. Elena

Not to worry Leila, they are more than just film makers.

  28. Chris

Wow! Is the record breaking number of comments thread?
I’ve read so much on here today. I don’t know where to even begin. I find it very interesting only the women came on here today. Where were all of the “men” on bvbl. Or were there in “drag” with a female screen name?

  29. Chris

corr: Or were THEY(“men)ALL HERE in “drag” with a female screen name?

  30. Cat Scratch Fever

Ah time for me to throw out the angelo mwb comment again, giving full credit to Juturna. Lets see….white men without __????????

Chris, maybe they were sent here to beat us all up? Or perhaps you were to have been kidnapped and brought back into the fold. That sounds like the Ransom of Red Chief to me. Just kidding. HIIIIISSSSSSS

  31. Chris

    MEOW!
Very funny. My mom always told me if a stranger kidnapped me not to worry. They’d bring me right back. Who’d want to keep me? Let alone put up the ransom. I’m still laughing!

  32. “kgotthardt, I have never been nasty to you and what you choose to call me means absolutely nothing to me.”

Anon-100 what I said was if I were a person hanging around a store not bothering anyone and people showed up because they wanted to intimidate me, I might call that person names. In other words….if you DO that to people, then YES, they might call you names! I just can’t see people going to a store to make people looking for work feel bad. That isn’t what I would consider community service. What if it were you who really needed work and that was the only way you knew how to find it?

  33. Censored bybvbl

I’d be interested in hearing why HSM members are there also if not to intimidate. Do you think that you can rid the county of immigrants by taking down tag numbers and reporting them to ICE? Do you think ICE wants to concentrate its agents on picking up Harry Homeowner looking for some guys to spread mulch or on the small subcontractor? What are you more interested in – publicity or effective use of ICE’s limited resources?

  34. Censored, what they are interested in is being “foot soldiers.” I suggest they join the military or become cops. Citizens who act like cops are called vigilantes. Citizens who go through proper channels are called “concerned citizens” or “reformers” or “activists. The difference is these are legal, useful approaches. Vigilantism is not.

  35. Juturna

    Loudoun, 7. July 2008, 13:25
Juturna – I don’t know what you are talking about. Please give more details so I can respond (later this afternoon).

I had nothing specific in mind. Just a stab in the dark based on observations over the past year. Don’t think I am off the mark, though. 🙂

We would welcome you here to the side of light and would be glad to help you ‘escape’ the dark side if you are interested. Most of us here are against illegal immigration. We just don’t have one opinion or one way of handling it. This is America, you know, not an Eastern bloc country with only one approach. But if you prefer the Eastern bloc approach, that is your choice!

Regarding signs in Spanish/Korean whatever. I am only against the enabling that accompanies. Bottom line, Lowe’s is NOT hiring anyone that doesn’t speak English into upper or middle management. I grew up in NE and there were signs all over the place in French and Italian. Mostly French for the Canadians. I can still go back there and go to Church and have the priest switch to Italian halfway through. There were French churches, French resturants and so on. HOWEVER, they made their children speak English and they did their best to speak English when in public. I think everyone I knew had a Grandmother that spoke another language. As many have said, it takes a generation. HOWEVER, last statistics from PWC schools indicated that 40% or more of those children in ESOL were SECOND generation. NOT GOOD – for the children. That is the sole statistic you need to drill down to to make any observation about English in this country.

  36. I’ve been to churches where the mass was in Latin! : )

  37. No Mas Terciopelo Negro

Most of them are too old to become cops. Check out the videos on youtube.

Those gallos y gallinas look a little long in the tooth.

  38. Juturna,

Every wave of immigration contributes something to the country’s culture. If the current wave succeeds in making us a bilingual nation, don’t you think this is a good contribution?

  39. Juturna

Interesting thought. How many nations are bi-lingual? How can our government support the infrastructure necessary to do this?

  40. Juturna

Okay, went and checked out Switzerland, they have three official languages. Now on to the government, schools and expectations.

    Languages:
    German (official) 63.7%, French (official) 20.4%, Italian (official) 6.5%, Serbo-Croatian 1.5%, Albanian 1.3%, Portuguese 1.2%, Spanish 1.1%, English 1%, Romansch (official) 0.5%, other 2.8% (2000 census)
note: German, French, Italian, and Romansch are all national and official languages

  41. Juturna

Well, Mackie, you have me thinking now. It appears after a cursory review via google that there are four official languages and they are particular to various regions of the country.

I can’t think of a reason not to consider this aside from the expense and the rate of time it will take. Apparently, the different regions teach and govern in the language particular to their region.

Guess we are back to my thought that the US will end up having multiple regions.

Incidentally, Switzerland has a 99% literacy rate and has repeatedly turned down anti-immigration legislation.

    Okay, Mackie, I turned a page. 🙂

  42. We should just let the free market handle things like language. People are more likely to end up speaking the same language in order to get ahead rather than for the sake of pleasing Govt officials. And in different parts of the country, that language may be english, or spanish, or something like Cajun. The free market will work it out.

  43. Juturna

    Makes sense. Thanks Mackie.

  44. I’ve been thinking about it, and really, it doesn’t matter whether Corey Stewart was at the Order of the Red Circle meeting or not. We already know that he and Greg Letiecq work as a team to manipulate public opinion and bully the other Board members with hateful Citizens Time speeches and automated faxes/emails. What difference does it make if they spend their free time together as well?

Some where around the 200th comment, we found out that our anonymous eye witness was embellishing when he/she said he was standing in the hot sun wearing a Red Circle T-shirt with his pinkie finger clasped in the pinkie finger of Gospel Greg. So, worse case scenario, he drove by to see if Gospel Greg was doing a good job rallying the soldiers.

For my two cents, I’d rather have The GregNCorey Show operating at the 7 Eleven than in the Board chambers of my local government.

  45. Chris

    WHWN,
Your two cents there is priceless, and you make a very VALID POINT.

  46. Cat Scratch Fever

I would much prefer to think the twosome was 7-11-ing it rather than BOCS-ing it.

I am somewhat amused to find out that HSM is now a civic group. How does the IRS define civic groups? Do civic groups work the polls, volunteer for candidates and endorse candidates? Now I am not saying that HSM has done all those things. Perhaps they have skirted around the issue. But….it sure looked as though they were doing those things from a casual observer point of view.

  47. Cat Scratch:

Just as BVBL is separate from HSM, HSM is in turn separate from the PWC Republican Party. Although it was primarily HSM members who worked the polls on election day 2007, for instance, they were doing so in their capacity as members of the PWC Republican party and not as members of HSM. Does that clear things up for you?

  48. Cat Scratch

    WHWN,

Not in the least. Things are still very murky. I believe the lines of distinction are quite blurred. If you go to one of those 9500 Liberty Street videos on youtube.com, you will see some of the political candidates march in to an HSM meeting to greet all the attendees. Even the chairman appears in a couple, thumping his chest and using his best warrior voice. If you go to BVBL back around election season, you will hear some pleas for help with different candidate’s campaigns.

Perhaps they have not crossed IRS lines. I don’t know all the ins and outs of political organizations. I certainly don’t know that organization’s tax status, although it should be a matter of public record for those wanting to donate. I just do not see them as a civic group. That is pure BS.
