The family that planted corn in the front yard of their $500,000 home is gone from Carrie Oliver’s street. So are the neighbors who drilled holes into the trees to string up a hammock.

Oliver’s list goes on: The loud music. The beer bottles. The littered diapers. All gone. When she and her husband, Ron, went for walks in their Manassas area neighborhood, she would take a trash bag and he would carry a handgun. No more. “So much has changed,” she said in a gush of relief, standing with her husband on a warm summer evening recently outside a Costco store.

A short distance away, across the river of retail commerce that is Sudley Road, Norman Gonzalez spoke of change not as renewal, but as a kind of collapse.

Business at his restaurant, Cuna del Sol, has declined 50 percent. Worse still, his extended family’s slow, steady relocation from the Guatemalan town of Jutiapa to the bustling Prince William suburbs has imploded. “A year ago, I had the biggest family in all of Manassas, maybe 100 relatives,” he said.

Now, Gonzalez, a legal U.S. resident, has his own list: Langley Park, Chantilly, Fairfax City. That is where his brothers have scattered, and they will not visit him. “There’s too much fear here,” Gonzalez said.

Since the day one year ago when Prince William County supervisors launched their crackdown on illegal immigration, the gulf between the Olivers’ relief and Gonzalez’s dejection has narrowed little, and possibly widened.

At least there is one thing partisans on both sides agree on: Hispanic immigrants are leaving Prince William. Whether their departure has improved the county’s quality of life, or pushed its already strained economy further downward, is the new topic of contention driven largely by views of whether the presence of immigrants was a good thing in the first place.

73 Thoughts to ““A Hispanic Population in Decline””

  1. Moon-howler

And what are the causes? Not sure. If you talk to people in the hispanic population, they will tell you jobs and political climate, but jobs are the main reason.
I do not see this as a single yes or no issue. It appears rather complex to me.

  2. Rick Bentley

    Gonzales brought 100 RELATIVES here?

    And this is good?

  3. Just Cause

See I dont get the “fear” factor, I thought Police could only ask for a persons status IF they have been arrested and this person had 100 relatives here… illegally and they have no cirminal intent and faux paux as a legal citizen, then why the fear?

  4. Alanna

They only changed the resolution on April 29th of this year, and even then the changes have not been widely publicized but that’s about to change.

  5. TWINAD

    JC,

Remember ole GL’s quote “perception is reality”? That’s the fear. There is a perception that PWC is to be feared, hence, it is reality in these people’s minds. My husband left his wallet on the dresser when he left to go the gym the other night. I was worried until he got home to retrieve it what could happen to him if he was stopped without it.

  6. TH

The fact is not about the fear factor but about dealing with illegal immigration. There are jobs offered and we need to attach the source. You never hear of employers jailed. If your solution is to deport all of them, Just cause, then I see what you don’t get the fear factor. They understand that they are here illegally and that is why they fear the police.

  7. Mando

    “then why the fear?”

That should be obvious by now. MSF, Nancy Lyall, The Washington Post, MJM, Elena and her 9500 Liberty propaganda videos, etc. They’re all doing a wonderful job of scaring them away. The only people really taking their BS serious are the illegal aliens they’re supposedly crying a river for.

They are far more effective then any laws could ever be at scarring off illegal aliens. Someone coined the phrase “usefull idiots” a while back talking about people fed up with the double standard. Kinda ironic.

  8. We just lost the 4th amendment yesterday.

On and on it goes. Down and down. One after the other.

    The Constitution means nothing.

    http://www.restoretherepublic.com/component/option,com_seyret/task,videodirectlink/Itemid,40/id,808/

You can find the senators who betrayed you yesterday here:

    http://www.govtrack.us/congress/vote.xpd?vote=s2008-168

You’ll notice that one presidential candidate, McCain, was AWOL when it was time to protect our constitution. How can the enemy hate our freedoms when the only freedom we have left to us is the freedom to die?

While the other presidential candidate, the massive fraud known as Obama, voted in favor of skewering our constitution. Politics of Hope, Change, and Unity? Words…just words…

  9. Mando

There was a question a while back pertaining to the authenticity of the 9500 Lomond incident. Article from today’s MJM:

    By Amanda Stewart

    Published: July 10, 2008

A Manassas area man pleaded guilty Thursday to charges that he raped a 4-year-old girl.

Julio Cesar Huaman-Usca, 23, of the 9500 block of Lomond Drive in the Manassas area, pleaded guilty Thursday in Prince William Circuit Court to one count of rape.

Prosecutors said that Huaman-Usca raped a 4-year-old girl, who was a distant relative of his. He was babysitting the girl and her siblings while their parents were out of the house on March 25, police said.

When the girl’s parents came home, she told them what happened and they contacted police, prosecutors said.

The girl was taken to the hospital where she was examined. Prosecutors said her injuries were consistent with sexual assault.

Huaman-Usca is being held without bond pending a sentencing hearing on Oct. 16.

He is also being held on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Detainer.

Rape is punishable by up to life in prison.

  10. Peppermint Patty

I drilled holes in my trees for a bird feeder, and squirrel feeder. Did I break the law?
We’ve also thought about a hammock, and now I am really not sure we should.

  11. Just Cause

TH- I never said “deport them all”. The thread above shows 2 different scenerios from 2 different views:

1 person feared the inlux of immigrants, the other feared the County in General and if that topic wasnt about fear…then guess I mis-read it..

My fear has always been to much demand and not enough resources. Healthcare is suffering ( outrageous premiums) homes are in forclosure, gas prices are high and even food prices have risen etc etc… Guess the arguement could be..What happened???

  12. Just Cause

Peppermint Patty, Do you live in a Community with an HOA?? I know my area wont let you have a hammock nor would they allow any lawn furniture out front, but people do it anyway…Now is that right?

  13. Peppermint Patty

No HOA in my neighborhood. I would simply would not live in an HOA with a restriction such as not allowing lawn furniture. Does that mean you can’t sit in your front yard in a lawn chair too. I don’t think it’s right that some can get do it and others follow the rule. However, the HOA does have the power to amend their Restrictions & By-Laws.

  14. Just Cause

    Peppermint Patty,

No lawn furniture at all…I sit on my steps ( concrete at that) the HOA does send several notices to a person in violation and then if that isnt resolved, you get a “fine”

    HOA’s are bitter sweet though…

  15. Moon-howler

    Mando,

Thanks for bringing that dreadful incident back up. I would hope that the perp remains in jail the rest of his life. I don’t want to deport him. I never want him to leave prison.

  16. Moon-howler

Mando, I don’t recall any doubting of authenticity. Perhaps there was. I suppose any doubting that I would have is how someone could do something that heinous. There was another case like this one back in 1978. 3 year old girl. Let’s hope this case is handled better than the one in 1978 was.

  17. Chris

    MH & Mando,
Guys like him usually will get what’s coming to them in jail. Even the worst of the worst murderers hate a child rapist. Nothing could be handled as piss poorly as that case was in 1978. That incident took place in Irongate. Really not all that far from the recent incident on lower Lomond Dr.

  18. Chris

    JC,
I would like to know if you can have a chair or say park bench on your stoop/porch?
I would hate to think I couldn’t sit on my lawn or porch in a chair. I am truly sorry you are not allowed to have lawn furniture. That seems borderline un-American. IMHO.
BTW- What’s the “fine” for such a violation?
Can you have solar lights in your yard or flower bed?

  19. Chris

    JC,
Please, excuse the first question. I missed that in your earlier post. sorry

  20. Moon-howler

mackie, for those of us on the run, give us a synopsis of what happened.

  21. Just Cause

Chris- Its a town house development and we do have yards in front…but not even a park bench is allowed. Yep you can lights in your flower bed….The porch isnt truly big enough for a chair anyway but the yard is and you still cannot have it.. I am not exactly sure how much the fine is.. I do know that if you have your trash can out before 7:00AM and not picked back up and moved from the curb by 7:00P the fine is $40.00…

  22. Chris

    Just Cause
My goodness what neighborhood is that? I’ve heard of some wacky restrictions, but this seems pretty strict, and well monitored. That’s a steep fine for trash out too early. What about those that might work shift work?

  23. Mando

“Mando, I don’t recall any doubting of authenticity. Perhaps there was. I suppose any doubting that I would have is how someone could do something that heinous.”

Now that I think about it, you’re right. It was the incident on Alleghany that was questioned. The one where the 10 year old girl was raped by an illegal alien.

That’s pretty bad when you have so many juvenile rapes in a short period of time that you get them mixed up.

    Here’s that one:

    By Abe Nelson

    Published: May 20, 2008

Prince William police have extradited Jose Abel Zelaya Ascencio from Lumpkin, Ga., and charged him with rape and burglary with intent to commit rape.

On Oct. 22, police received a 7:30 a.m. call to investigate the sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl at a home in the 7500 block of Alleghany Road, northeast of Manassas Park, said Officer Erika Hernandez, Prince William Police spokeswoman.

Police reports show that a man broke into the house and went to the girl’s bedroom and tried to rape her while she slept, Hernandez said.

Police collected evidence at the crime scene and sent it to the lab for testing, Hernandez said.

On May 6, police obtained warrants for Ascencio’s arrest after DNA test results came back tying the 32-year-old Ascencio to the crime scene, Hernandez said.

Ascencio, formerly of 9908 Lomond Drive, was being held in Georgia on illegal immigration charges and was scheduled for deportation to El Salvador on May 9.

He was arrested on the immigration charges shortly after the rape was reported, Hernandez said.

Ascencio was extradited to Prince William County on May 18 and is being held without bond at the Prince William-Manassas regional jail pending a hearing in Juvenile Domestic Relations Court, Hernandez said.

  24. Elena

    Mando,
What exactly is your point, that illegal aliens have a propensity for raping little girls? There are sick people , sick sick people in the world, and I agree with MH, I hope this guy stays in our jail system forever. Was the sicko who buried little Jessica Lunsford alive, after he raped her an illegal alien, no he was just some freak of nature, and now he is facing the death penalty. No sympathy here for him. You want to pick out heinous stories of illegal aliens, there are more than enough, statistically to out do you with white males. But I won’t get into a sick contest.

  25. –Remember ole GL’s quote “perception is reality”? That’s the fear.–

Well when you have people hanging out at a 7/11 for the specific purpose of intimidating others and when they BRAG about intimidating, then yes, I guess there SHOULD be fear. GL and his gang WANT to create fear and they have done a good job of it. Say what you want about MWB, but HSM is not absolved.

  26. Mando

“What exactly is your point, that illegal aliens have a propensity for raping little girls?”

Not really. Just saw the story and figured I’d post it because I remembered someone here doubted it’s truthfullness and claimed it was some GL conspiracy. Then I saw my error and posted the story that was doubted. Sorry I confused 2 juvenile rapes that happened that happened to have so many simularities.

Usually, these sicko juvi rapists are few and far between and make the headlines… even if they are in a different state… Jessica Lunsford is a great example.

2 happening in my community within a few months of each other, with both perps living on the same street notorious for flop houses, both perps being illegal aliens, coincidence you think??

But yeah… I’m glad the flop houses are being vacated in my community. Undoubtedly and emphatically glad.

I invite you, Elena, to offer up some living space in your house to rent out to some “undocumented workers”. You can videotape the event. Reality TV is BIG right now. No cherry picking the residents though!!! That wouldn’t be reality TV.

  27. TWINAD

“I invite you, Elena, to offer up some living space in your house to rent out to some “undocumented workers”.”

What a gross statement. I’ve got two “undocumented” brother in laws living with me and my family and I would wager that it would be pretty boring reality TV. I guess the video of them cleaning the house and yard would make for some real interesting tv. Why you seem to think ALL undocumented workers are wild, crazy, loud, dirty and perverted and would not make good housemates is blatantly prejudiced. I would be willing to bet a large sum of money that our kitchen and home is cleaner than yours (and not because of any effort on my part!). I’ve never lived in a cleaner home than the one I live in now with these guys.

  28. Mando

“GL and his gang WANT to create fear and they have done a good job of it.”

Assuming what you say is true, then you all are pawns to the mastermind that is GL. You have done his dirty work beyond his wildest dreams. MSF, Nancy Lyall, and Steinbach were easy pickings but to actually get WAPO and the MJM to do his bidding was brilliant! CASA of MD? Tieda? The Mexican Govt and that UN official?? All the talking heads and politicians??? I wonder if this anti-site was also in his master plan? All pawns and guilty of sewing those seeds of fear.

GL puts Karl Rove to shame. He’s a SCARY guy.

  29. Mando

    @TWINAD

    I said no cherry picking.

  30. GL has been brilliant in leading people who don’t want to think for themselves. He ousts everyone who disagrees with him.

Personally, I’m not a pawn, but the BOCS is. And when he goes out and threatens people with violence, we are more than his pawns. We are his victims.

  31. Mando

Oh how quickly we forget GENOCIDE and ETHNIC CLEANSING. Those are great phrases to sew seeds of fear… until they come back to bite you in the ass…

  32. Mando, words like “genocide” have never been used to describe PWC since no one is being executed by the government, per se. “Ethnic cleansing” is a whole different matter, a historical lesson and term pondered by people who are trying to see the larger picture outside of PWC and outside of 2007/2008.

But if you can’t see that, then this conversation is rather a waste of time. I’m not trying to be insulting or anything of the sort. When people discuss philosophy, history, and sociology and others don’t read that discussion in context, then communication breaks down. It’s like trying to describe an orange in scientific terms when all the listener really wants to do is EAT the orange.

  33. Moon-howler

Mando, that Alleghany case was the one that we simply could not find out anything else about. I had heard the family of the child who was raped picked up and moved, like instantly. That was really a bad case. I think both victim and perp were illegal from what I have heard on the grapevine. I am glad that the crime was reported and that the bastard who did that has been captured. That was great cop work both here and in Georgia and a brave family to stick with making sure the creep is taken out of society.

I have no use for child rapists and wish anything evil on them.

  34. elvis

for one…who cares. Two..the economy sucks and it sucked before the resolution so the resolution is just a scapegoat for the problems of SOME Hispanics. the problems that are echoed by these hispanics are what most people are going through on a daily basis who are NOT hispanic. Everyone has been affected by the economic downturn and it’s not just hispanics. Helping out hispanic restaurants, 9500 liberty, the resolution, etc..none of this means squat in the grand scheme of things. Want to help the economy? Lower gas prices and fix the mortgage issues then we’ll talk about the sob story of various immigrants.

  35. Moon-howler

Elvis, The 2 things you just described, gas and mortage issues are definitely slamming us, particularly those of us in PWC and MC and MP.

The economy party tonight is not hispanic owned. I don’t know how many ways I can say it. Some of us have also held meetings at a local Starbux that was having its own economic turndown (obviously ones other than just this one was since 600 nationally will close). Surely you aren’t going to say that Starbux is Hispanic? I know that they sell Colombian and Guatamalean coffee but that is definitely a stretch….

I wish it were in my power to fix the gas issues and the mortgage issues. It is not.

  36. Moon-howler:

  38. An Oberserver

kghotthard said “Mando, words like “genocide” have never been used to describe PWC since no one is being executed by the government, per se. “Ethnic cleansing” is a whole different matter, a historical lesson and term pondered by people who are trying to see the larger picture outside of PWC and outside of 2007/2008. ”

WRONG – on this blog in the past many times it was stated that what was happening in PWC was just like the Holocaust, and also there was a long thread about genocide. Apparently we are now rewriting history to deny that there were threads on this blog where the resolution was compared to the Holocaust.

  39. Mando

“That was great cop work both here and in Georgia and a brave family to stick with making sure the creep is taken out of society.”

Just remember, he was picked up in GA for immigration violations.

  40. SecondAlamo

    kghotthard,

As a matter of fact the term Genocide was a main topic on this blog:

    http://www.antibvbl.net/index.php/2008/06/23/genocide-watch-the-geocidal-process

  41. stw

hey guys….all is quiet at the anti front….they are all at the screening tonight (well, almost all)…..enjoy the peace.

  42. Moon-howler

SA, The genocide thread was about the genocide process. I asked you on the other thread if you watched the War of the World. It sort of fits in with that topic.

I don’t think that Alanna or Elena tried to say that was happening in Prince William County. It obviously is not. I believe the point was how the process works. I found it interesting because I had never thought about how genocide happens.

  43. Moon-howler

Mando, Most people on this blog support the 287(g) program which is what allowed for the rapist to be caught. I have not talked to anyone who does no support it. I keep hearing we don’t. Please point them out to me. It is critical that we be able to lock up and track those convicted of crimes. I

  44. Moon-howler

stw, are things that hustling and bustling over on the dark screen blog that you have to come over for some peace and quiet? WoW!!!

Did you go to the screening? I heard Corey got mighty red in the face a few times.

  45. stw

    MH – yeah, that’s it….whatever you say.
    No, I didn’t go – did you?

  46. 1. No one said anyone was being killed here.
    2. No one said this is Germany.
    3. People DO say learn from history but you have to READ and THINK about history in order to do that.

    Enough said.

The film was great tonight, the food was tasty, the wait staff friendly, and a good time was had by all. If you want to watch a series of clips that demonstrate how the policy came to be and where it is now, I recommend this film. The clips come right from the BOCS and main players themselves.

  47. dakota

    kgotthardt,

Did you see any evidence of tampering or trick photography?

  48. Alanna

There was a glitch in the production and the scene where Frank Principi’s proposal was voted down 7-to-1 didn’t play properly. Thankfully, Eric inserted another DVD at the end and we got to view that part of the movie. Very informative. Thanks for all your hard-work and dedication. Sorry, I didn’t get to talk to Anon-100. I would have liked to introduce her to my family.

  49. statistician

“Did you see any evidence of tampering or trick photography?” A little suspicious aren’t you kgotthardt? Actually Eric did a good job, for an amatuer. And may I bring some light to your thinking that HelpSaveManassas is promoting fear and intimidation by standing along the sidewalk in front of the Coverstone 7-ll? What their presence has done is elevate public awareness and brought attention to the fact that folks who are hanging out, many of them illegal males, hoping to get picked up by unscrupulous employers. And about fear? It’s unfounded for anyone to fear when they’ve entered the USA through the legal means. There are plenty of medias from which information could go out to the communities, in the language they understand best. Why not question them? Also, please tell us who GL has ousted because they’ve disagreed with him? How he has threatened people with violence? Victim, please you are your own victim!

  50. elvis

    I was there incognito,

honestly I didnt see any evidence of media trickery, but i didnt see anything overly new either. i believe most of the stuff I’ve seen before, it’s just put together different.

Byler is just trying to spin up audiences into thinking HSM is the evil doer when in fact it should be him with the satan cap on since him, elena and crew are trying spin this thing as an “we hate hispanics affair” get real.

a little background, elena actually supported corey stuart. she did fundraisers for him because he claimed he was anti-development. This was a cause she supported. Then she tagged on to the illegal immigrant cause funny how there are little illegals in haymarket were she lives. I put elena in the same category as nancy lyall, women who have nothing else to do but look for causes to keep them busy during the day.

this is all funny, the “special screening” proved to me that this whole thing is being turned into a media circus by elena and 9500 liberty not anyone else. If anything GL got what he wanted and he’s laying low from what it seems.
