We would love to have your input for the next venue for an economic party. If you know of a restaurant that would welcome the event, please feel free to share. Everyone is welcome to particpate, especially those who feel we focus too heavily on one particular type of restaurant.

how about outback steakhouse…a good steak dinner is an excellent way to support the economy, think of all the stuff that goes into a dinner (and the cost of course)
potatoes – farmers
meat – rancers
vegetables – farmers
you get the picture
I dont work for outback either. Another good choice is carrabas or maybe even olive garden. All good choices, if your going to spend money to support the economy then these places are goods ones to spend it. I mean if your going to skimp on money (i.e. not support the economy) then chuck e cheese has plenty of room.
Why not Logan’s? It’s in the county! I think another local blog had a “get together” there.
McDonalds?

Great food and service.
Kirkpatricks in (dramatic music) HAYMARKET. Right there in the Giant shopping center. I know back last summer they were having trouble making payroll.
I think the intent is to stay in Prince William County since this county is one of the hardest hit economically. I love ALL the places named by Elvis but I believe only Olive Garden is still in Prince William. Even though those places are all chains, individual stores can be hit hard, depending on location.
Where ever it is I plead with you, go to a LOCALLY RUN BUSINESS!!!!! McDonalds, Olive Garden and Outback are all National Conglomerate Chains, and in some cases they are run by International Companies. They have resturants all over the world and make billions of dollars, Local resturants and stores don’t have that luxery yet they tend to have better food, service and atmosphere.
It is the unique business atmosphere of a town or area that is the major drawing factor these days, not how many template chain stores it posessess. I would sugest going to a local diner, a chinese resturant, a local cafe, whatever, just as long as it’s owned and managed by people in the community. Places like McDonalds don’t so much give jobs to communities as they ruin the abilities of Americans to use their own individual skills to make and stock resturants and business of their own. Anyone ever wonder how much stock the Arab states posess in these giant companies? They can hardly be called American anymore.
Eat Local, Buy Local, Invest Local and you will have a rich and wonderful locality to live in,
If you were in Herndon, I’d sugest Charcoal Kabob (great Afgan food) Virginia Kitchen (Local homemade breakfest and lunch) Anita’s (a chain, but one only found in NOVA) as long as they don’t have branches in California or New York, it’s probally a unique place to eat.
Local guys, please keep it Local! 🙂
It’s too late for one of my favorites – Spices. Does anyone know anything about the relatively new Indian restaurant that moved into the old Cafe 28 location on Centreville Road? Many Indian restaurants do a buffet that makes it easier for everyone and gives people a chance to sample a variety of foods.
Spices may be gone, but that Thai place that’s there now is extremely nice. Everything about it including the food is top-notch.
How about holding the next event at the Coverstone 7-11? A picnic at the vacant lot next to it?
This is a City of Manassas restaurant. The food is great and the owners are hard-working, welcoming people. There was an article in The Washington Post’s Prince William Extra about them working together with their fellow merchants in down economic times, even letting a neighboring store (The Things I Love) use their water hose for their outdoor plants.

Rob,
I have a tendency to agree with you in principle. However, many local restaurants that are chains are run by local people and staffed by local people. If the store fails, it closes and people are out of work. This is a consideration and for that reason I wouldn’t totally discount going to a chain.
Look what happened to Starbucks. 600 stores nationally are closing. Surely some of those 600 will be in this area. Everyone tends to think of them as the rich people coffee place. Not true at all. Middle class people like fancy coffee also. However, if it comes down to your mortgage or gourmet coffee, guess which one usually wins. If gasoline goes up, people still might go to Starbucks, but not as often. Again, the local stores are hurt and if they close, people are out of a job.
I offer this only as another perspective. I think our original intent was to support local owners.
Lots of great ideas folks! City Square Cafe sounds interesting however I also love Thai food!
I’ve been to City Square Cafe many, many times (though not in the past few months), and they have good food. It’s a little small inside, but they do have a large outdoor seating area that’s very nice.
It’s probably better to check with them now and see what size group they can handle.
Moon-Howler,
I see what your saying… It’s kind of like the “Wal-Mart” curse, once they move in to town, they give some people jobs and are a good cheap place to shop, but they utterly devistate all the locally grown business. How many Manassas based coffee houses went out of business or could not start because of they could not compete with Starbucks? However without that Starbucks, there would be ten or twelve people who would have to find work elsewhere.
It’s a mess, a mess we are all somewhat responsible for, the majority of us wanted our food, clothing, groceries and everything in our lives to be given to us faster. We bought into the notion that Name Brand items from big companies could do us no harm. Now there is a whole generation of yougsters who have no idea how to make anything for themselves and the things that were Pre-Made are now becoming unaffordable and are disapearing. I can’t even build an animation studio because of all the complex zoning legislation put into place to keep big business in and small business out of Herndon.
Even now they are thinking of zoning and Arts district and giving tax breaks to anyone willing to set up shop there, a last desperate measure to bring some type of income to Herndon…too little too late now. Herndon strip malls are gathering more and more vacant vending slots. You will see a sign for a new resturant go up, stay up for three months then come down before the resturant even had a chance to open.
The truth of the matter is, we are in trouble, and we have got to galvinize and start building our own business’. We can’t afford to be too ambitious, we need to start working with the intent to serve the local community, not the world. Our elected officials need to help us out to, we need realistic zoning regulations, not ones that can only be fulfilled by giant corporations.
For the love of G-D build a local bakery, don’t build a “Panera” We have a Great Harvest in Herndon and they actually bother to hire local teens in the summer to bake their bread. I try and patronize them as much as possible, but they don’t have hours that are friendly with my working schedule.
Rob, I was totally kidding about McDonald’s! LOL!
“Does anyone know anything about the relatively new Indian restaurant that moved into the old Cafe 28 location on Centreville Road?”
My husband and I looked for it but couldn’t find it! Indian is awesome and too many little Indian restaurants go out of business.
I meant Rod.
Rod, I think those days are gone. We did have a local bakery in town: Manassas Bakery over on 28. Many of the mom and pop shops found it easier to see to the big boys. I don’t fault them.
I guess in fairness, I don’t remember any coffee shops in Manassas. Now there is Bad Ass, Caribeau, Dunkin’ Doughnuts, Starbucks, as well as McDonalds now being a coffee place. I think if you want to experience those days of yore, then you move to some remote area where it isn’t worth the while of a major corporation to move in.
I have friends in Ocean Park, Washington. It sounds like a great place to escape corporate America. The only name brand I saw in town was a gas company. Can’t remember which one though.
There are still some nice little Mexican bakeries down near 28.
Zabb Thai is a great place. They have a very “DC” atmosphere, nice decor and jazz, nice service, and good Thai – on the spicy side. Eat the two or three pepper rated dishes at your own risk. I recommend the mixed vegatables (with chicken) as a relatively mild dish.
A great Indian place in Manassas is Tandoori Village. A small place off Route 28. Great stuff. I recommend the second and third dishes in the “Chicken” section, don’t remember the names. The glob jomin (sic – a dessert) with ice cream is heaven on earth.
I hope you bleeding heart softies have a nice dinner, but fail to meaningfully acheive your aims.
I know in Great Falls there was an actual physical protest by the residents when their local coffee place was going to be closed and replaced by a big chain.
despite the uproar they lost, I know people who still boycott the place, but on the upside, a local Irish Pub called The Old Brogue, transformed it’s daytime resturant half into an Irish Coffee shop and their business doubled!
I’m not much of a Coffee guy but Herndon just got a new Locally run Coffee/Dessert internet/UPS Shipping?! store. It has a bad wrap about being a little pricy, but they have all sorts of strange deals and specials. I figured the place would fold, and time will tell, but I see the business has been picking up. There was one local place I used to patronize religiously untill the 18 year olds discovered it. An Egyptian man had ordered a bunch of hand made Arabic tesselated friniture and decorations and be built a Hookah Bar/ kabob resturant in a business park in Herndon, a place called the Spinx Cafe. He is a Muslim so he does not sell alcohol. It was really unknown at first and I was probally one of his first customers, I used to go their every weekend to smoke a pipe and study for my Arabic class, It was like taking a trip to Egypt, only cleaner…anyway eventualy the 18-20 crowd found the place and it is mobbed every night untill 1am. It’s more of a Club scene now with a live DJ every night. I’m happy for the owner, but loud music and teens are not my scene so I’m waiting for someone to open up a Coffee house/Library/ Hookah bar.
blah, I had one of those energy drinks at lunch and now I’m telling stories for the sake of talking, I’m going to sign off and do something productive. I hope you guys find a good place to have the next party, I don’t know the PWC scene too well, but if it’s in Manassas I’ll try and come.

MH,
I miss the Manassas Bakery. One of the daughters does have a shop over on Ballsford Rd. I think it’s still open.
A good bakery is Cafe Bakery Majestic in the Morais (sp) Building near the intersection of Center and Grant in the City.
Is Tandoori Village the restaurant that took Cafe 28/Chez Marc’s place, Rick?
Not sure about that Censored, we’ve only been going there for a year or two. It’s an interesting building, made of stone, big wooden doors.
Yes, Tandoori Village is the place where Chez Marc once was. They feature Punjabi cuisine; anxious to try it although I’ve never been there.

The Murgh Makhan Masala is awesome. Like butter chicken, but a slight bit spicier.
The Murgh Bhoona Methi is very nice if you don’t want any (hot) spiciness.
A great idea for two is to order a meat dish like the above, and a small vegetable dish (spicy potatoes, cauliflour) and split them.
The Ghulaab Jaman with ice cream is better than sex, point blank.
Rick, you seem to be an adventurous diner. Have you been to Heba’s – a mid-eastern (Egyptian?) deli/grocery on Nathan Ct.? It’s in the warehouse area where SERVE used to be – off Balls Ford Rd.
Logans is awesome, I’ll second that motion for sure. awesome food and the staff is nice and kid friendly.
How about Seoul BBQ on the end of Dale blvd (the name may have changed). Great Korean food plus sushi and a nice little bar. This place has been an awesome place to eat for me and my wife for years and they could really use the business.
They are not a chain restaurant and the Korean food is great! If you don’t have the party there I encourage people to check it out. It’s the only place in Woodbridge, locally owned, you can have some sashimi, drink a Sapporo and eat bulgogi.
Seoul BBQ sounds good, too. At this point, though, just let me know the location/time/date of the party and I’ll try to be there. It’s all good, y’all.
Someone needs to make a list of all the places. You all have had some great ideas!
Rick, why don’t you join us? We won’t even tell.
Rod, There is a really neat coffee house in Cenreville, I want to say the Coffee Bean, on 29, going south, right before your cross 28. I will find out the name if you are interested. The often have live intertainment on the weekends. Lots of different things to order. No alcohol served though.
Unless Heba’s has expanded, they don’t have more than a couple tables. It’s mainly a take-out. I was just curious if Rick had discovered it.
WOW! Everyone must be hungry. LOL
Food and music ( which by the way is why I post youtube video-trying to lighten things up around here with hope that no one has taking them in the wrong way) seem to bring people together.
I think it is important to note that all the recommendations for a place to get together are very diverse in food cuisine, a great gift for the taste buds! ( I love Indian food)
eating is the american way these days, I know I love to eat unfortunately I dont get the chance to eat a really good meal that often. when I do I usually go all out for the best I can find in the area.
speaking of food I recently hit up emerils restauraunt in Orlando florida, awesome cuisine and highly recommended they really treat you right there.
for around here capital city brewery would be a nice get together place, it’s outside of PWC though if that’s a problem or someplace like mikes american which is always a treat.

How about Seoul BBQ on the end of Dale blvd (the name may have changed). Great Korean food plus sushi and a nice little bar.
That’s on the east end of Dale Bvld, right? Ashdale Plaza?
I heard they have awesome food there.

I know I love to eat unfortunately I dont get the chance to eat a really good meal that often.
I heard that Elvis loved fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches. 🙂
Coastal Flats and Artie’s are two more from the same chain as Mike’s and are good but are in Fairfax. Panjshir (Afghan) in Vienna and Falls Church are good. Vienna is a good town to nosh through. There’s sushi, desserts at all hours at Amphora, Thai, Turkish, Indian, Anita’s, Italian, vegetarian. (Just a few recommendations when you’re out and about but not in PWC and too far for our get-togethers.)
Sweetwaters ( Centreville)-a division of American and Artie’s…oh geez!!!
Tell you what, I was a recent winner of a $100 gift Certificate to Schmick and Mc Cormick seafood restaurants…. DEPENDING on when I get the certificate and the party date, I am willing to give it away as a charity of some sort.
Food drive to SERVE? Any other ideas? Something local, please 🙂
Donations to fuel for Meals on Wheels? Some sort of donation to benefit the elderly that was axed out?????????
If I were going to cast my vote, the new indian place where Chez Marc was sounds interesting. They are fairly small though, I wonder if they could accomodate us? maybe Rick will show up incognito 😉
I also still like Cindy B’s idea.
You know Red Dawn, I like your idea of donating to Meal on Wheels. Maybe we could incorporate that idea into the party.
Red Dawn and Elena,
I think the Meals on Wheels as a selected cause for a meeting is a SPECTACULAR idea. I am a member of a couple professional organizations who do similar things at each meeting (pick a select organization/cause for a focus).
http://www.mowaa.org/
Elena,
YES,incorporate the donation to Meals on Wheels, SERVE, etc…I will give away the $100 gift certificate to McCormick and Schmicks Seafood restaurants ( unless, it is illegal to transfer) to some sort of winner of the charity drive?????? 🙂
I said in another thread, to work smart and not hard, LOL!
How about this? Can we hold a raffle, give all the money collected to Meals on Wheels, serve, etc? How does that work? ( laws and regulations? ) If it is a simple as I hope, maybe we can raffle off other things (other than the cert. I am giving), if people want to jump in and make this grow???
Rod, check out Java Roo in Old Towne Manassas. Next to Bull Run Unitarian, Church and Main Streets.
Why don’t you find out Red Dawn. If there is an issue with a raffle, we can still ask for donations for meals on wheels.
Censored, never tried Heba’s, I’ll give it a try sometime.
Moon-howler and elena I won’t infiltrate, but thanks.
Red Dawn,
“Evil Emma” is going to weigh in here, as she is quite involved in charitable events like this.
Your raffle is probably exempt from regulation because:
§ 18.2-340.23. Organizations exempt from certain permit, financial reporting and audit requirements.
A. No organization that reasonably expects, based on prior charitable gaming annual results or any other quantifiable method, to realize gross receipts of $25,000 or less in any 12-month period shall be required to (i) notify the Department of its intention to conduct charitable gaming, (ii) file a resolution of its board of directors as required by subsection B, or (iii) comply with Board regulations. If any organization’s actual gross receipts for the 12-month period exceed $25,000, the Department may require the organization to file by a specified date the report required by § 18.2-340.30.
gambling-law-us.com/State-Laws/Virginia/
I’m glad to see some concern here for following the law. No worries, I won’t be there.
Emma,
Thanks for the information. I appreciate your help.
