A first term governor from Alaska a heartbeat away from the presidency-oh boy! This is not just a gamble for McCain, it’s a gamble for America.
A gamble and a whopper of a pandering to women. I can’t imagine too many Hillary fans being won over. To equate the experience of those two women is an insanely desparate tactic.
I think this is an awesome choice! From what I’ve seen Palin is a great match for McCain. Both are people who fought for what they thought was right even if it meant going against their own party.
Having a first term governor one heart beat away from the oval office doesn’t make me nearly as nervous as having a first term Senator in the oval office.
So do we call her Failin’ Palin or Bailin’ Palin? McCain and McAbel? Who is this woman?
A hockey Jocky for VP? A former beauty queen? At least she didn’t trade in her first spouse for a younger woman. Make that younger rich woman. (that we know of) Well this one is just way too far right for this home girl. The Madam is not pleased.
Nothing will quite live up to the Fritz and Tits team. If anyone thinks that the Hillary-ites will all come flocking, they are seriously mistaken. In fact, I think this RR woman might drive those who were considering McCain away.
Actually, I think perhaps the Madam is pleased. This one is a guaranteed shoe in for the Democrats IMHO.
Ah, Madam, I think the selection says much about the good-old-boy network – all those women are simply interchangeable. Michael, where are you? Isn’t McCain pandering to a gender group!!!???
I don’t know if I’ve ever felt more insulted by old and entitled patriarchy. Does John McCain think we supported Hillary Clinton JUST because she was a woman???? That we’d vote for ANYONE as long as she’s female??????? What happened to “country first???????”
McCain is praying American women will put GENDER first? How frickin’ insulting.
Who is this woman? And why can’t she pronounce “nuclear???”
You’ve got Palin all wrong. She has actually kicked some of her fellow REpublican’s butts in Alaska. That is why people love her. She fights the good ole boy network, even when the good ole boys are in her own party.
She is just what McCain needed.
This a sign of panic in the McPain campaign. I thought experience was supposed to count for something. Now the comparison is a no contest in favor of Obama/Biden.
This small town mayor is now a heartbeat away from being Commander in Chief? And to America in the face with this on Sen. McCain’s S-E-V-E-N-T-Y–S-E-C-O-N-D birthday? I guess experience is nothing and gender is everything. “Country first,” my *ss.
This is desperation and it will backfire. I honestly feel sorry for the old guy. He is more out of touch than I thought.
NGL,
I have never heard of her before. She has a few glaring political tags that I simply can never vote for. Yes, it is very insulting to be confronted with a one size fits all female. But some people will never get it. I expect she will be more of a detractor than an enhancement to the already plagued Republican ticket.
I’ve heard through the pipeline (pun intended) that McCain has no say in the matter of who his VP is, that the heads of the GOP pick the Vice President. Palin was picked for one purpose, to clear all blocks to drilling in the Alaskan Wildlife Reserve. The GOP leaders are heavily invested in oil and in their minds, the people be damned, what matters most is getting the most money in their pockets from their oil wells before this country falls into ruin, then they can live the rest of their treachorus lives like so thought “gods” in Bahrain and the new Haliburton Hilton in Dubai.
Sara Who?
And the fact that I’m a 44 yr old PTO soccer/hockey mother of 5 with a union hubby has absolutely nothing 😉 to do with my bias.
Better to have two male pro-choice candidates than a woman who is anti-choice. And what’s with the desire for creationism to be taught in the public schools? Aren’t we in the twenty-first century here! Okay. I’ve exposed my polictical beliefs. So burn me at the stake!
I’ve also exposed my failure to use spell check.
I think we should vote for her on the basis that she is as hot as hell! oooooh la la!
The McCain ticket is DOA.
As soon as the Press discovers how Palin abused her power as Governor to try to destroy her State-Trooper ex-brother-in-law, McCain can kiss the fifty percent of Men, those who have gone through a divorce, good-bye!
I just removed the McCain stickers from the back of my cars.
MH, I took some time to cool off but I am still upset.
Rod, I can’t imagine that anyone but McCain made this decision. I think it was his way to push back against the party operatives that are putting the clamp on his jaw. Only a man who is losing his marbles could have made this choice.
I blame the the dimwit pundits who tagged “Clinton supporters” as people who only care about equal rights for women. So fricken stupid! A lot of men supported Clinton. A lot of older women supported Clinton. Do you think a 65 year old woman is going to look at this whats-her-name and say, “Now there’s an experienced and seasoned political professional who will bring back the Clinton economy?”
I doubt it.
GOPers resolved their right wing PUMA problem.
Of course, moderate independents also got something from the GOP VP selection
– the finger.
I notice all the pro-McCain posters are silent right now. I’ll venture a guess as to why: It takes only an instant to see that Palin was a horrific blunder of a choice. But it takes a day or two to brainwash youself into saying it was a good choice.
The only people out there saying it was a good choice are the campaign insiders who had a few days to brainwash themselves.
Just last month, Palin had TO ASK that Kudlow guy, ON THE AIR, what exactly the Vice President’s job is, saying she was more used to small town politics. If she doesn’t know what the duties are, I can’t imagine how she could be qualified to fulfill them.
McCain’s decision on running mate is such a gift to Obama I suspect McCain’s nursing staff might have given him the wrong medication.
Wow, nobody here seems to know this woman but everyone is quick to bash her as McCain’s VP choice. It wasn’t that long ago when people said “Obama who?”. Nobody knew Obama or what he stood for at first so why don’t you give this woman a chance.
I think that it was a good choice but I’m in the same boat as everyone else, I don’t really know much about her so before bashing her as a choice I’m going to see what comes of it.
I have the scoop
pwconservative.net
If Obama is inexperienced, what is Palin? A surreal pick from a confused, vacuous candidate.
For once I find the WaPo response section to the article on her being McCain’s VP choice a hoot – a good mixture for once of opinions although I like “DAN QUAYLE IN A PONYTAIL”.
I have the scoop
pwconservative.net
SHE IS PRO-IMMIGRATION SO LAY OFF!!!
Censored, you’re all over her. I think McCain should have/could have done it better. I don’t know her at all, I have only read her name in passing news reports. Maybe she’s a bad pick, maybe not. I am not a supporter.
But to toss the personal insults around to someone who decided years ago to enter public service while raising five kids (one is reported to have Down’s) is a bit overboard.
Censored, have you been a mayor? A sitting Governor? Why not?
Even if you completely disagree with her selection, are the personal insults legitimate? “Dan Quayle in a ponytail”? I’ll giver her this, on paper she’s all over that guy.
Too bad you can’t recognize someone else’s achievements and hold civil disagreements with them without resorting to personal attacks.
I agree Luck Duck, Censored in somewhat out of line with his posts about her. He/she knows nothing about this woman but it quick to bash her. Is it only because she is a Republican? If so that’s pretty pathetic.
WOW! I’m impressed McCain picked Palin, not because I would vote for someone based on gender but because it seems McCain isn’t letting gender get in the way. And a first-time Alaskan, too!
He apparently thinks she is very capable and wants someone new in Washington.
Good for him!!!
Lucky Duck, I’m pro-choice and against teaching creationism in schools. Hillary Clinton wasn’t my first choice for prez. Obama was. I never mentioned Palin’s family. I don’t care how many kids she has. That’s her choice. I never mentioned Down’s syndrome so I don’t know why you are trying to tie that to me.
None of us has been Prez, Mayor of any city, or Guv so I don’t see how that has anything to do with how we vote. We’re entitled to our opinions. The “DAN QUAYLE IN A PONYTAIL” came right out of the WaPo response section as I said it did. I’ve seen nothing to make me think she’s got the experience to become leader of the free world. There are more voters in Chicago than Alaska.
Hello, I’m female and an Independent and don’t like to be pandered to.
I have to laugh out loud at some of the comments I am reading here. Sara Palin is an excellent strategic pick for VP. McCain needed to close the deal with the GOP conservative base, and close the deal with those disaffected women voters who felt betrayed that Obama didn’t even vet Clinton. McCain has accomplished this on both accounts. For those who don’t think Sara Palin will pull a significant number of Hillary supporters, better bop on over to Hillary’s blog, and read the comments there. For those who don’t think Sara is more than acceptable to the GOP evangelical, anti-tax, fiscal, 2nd Ammendment pro-life base, you are in for a rude awakening.
She has a 90 PERCENT APPROVAL RATING as governor. She has executive experience, which none of the three senators can claim. She is pro-life who chose to give birth to a child with downs syndrome. She has cut taxes, BUT raised taxes on the oil companies. Her son is shipping out to Iraq. The Obama campaign and DNC better think long and hard about attacking her, but I suspect they will do so in a very stupid fashion, and pay a high price for it.
What is more telling about the comments on this thread, is that many “regulars” have finally shown their true ultra-liberal colors. Funny how when there is finally a non-illegal immigration related post, how the “moderate” facade falls away.
Censored – you said that Obama was your first choice and that “I’ve seen nothing to make me think she’s got the experience to become leader of the free world” – no S, you don’t even know her. So Obama has shown you that he has the experience to become the leader of the free world as your very first choice? What makes him so much more experienced than Palin (who by the way is the VP choice, not the presidential choice)?
I agree with you Ed, the moderate facade fades pretty quickly here when the subject doesn’t involve immigration.
We have Obama’s Senate record of voting on national issues. He represents a much larger voting population than the entire state of Alaska. We’ve been exposed to his views for a longer time and they’ve been pretty heavily scrutinized. Would you think Tim Kaine, as Guv of a more populated state tha Alaska, was qualified to be VP? (I realize yours and Kaine’s political views may be diametrically opposed.) I think McCain thought that he could siphon off some Hillary votes by naming a woman. Why not Hutchison? Or Rice? Independent women who voted for Hillary are not likely to choose a no choice candidate. Some may, but the majority won’t. If 1/3 of the electorate is independent and middle-of-the-road, they’re not likely to be persuaded to vote for a right-wing candidate. They’re looking for a moderate.
Ed, I have to laugh at how some people feel that anyone left of Pat Robertson is – oooh, scary – out in left field. Maybe,as a man, you can’t seem to grasp that pregnancy is a very basic issue to women and a choice that many of us feel is ours alone to make. A family of ten or no children – ain’t nobody’s business but my own.
Censored, I too, think Hutchinson would have been an excellent pick. Rice too, except she is too closely tied to Bush. If only Elizabeth Dole were ten years younger (he could not put another 70 year old on the ticket because HE is too old) she’d be a dream candidate.
I mentioned her accomplishments (mayor and governor) and her family in pointing out that she has gone into public service to work and for that she deserves to have her RECORD looked at in an objective manner and not the personal insults I have read from you and Madame on this blog.
Well said Lucky… and your 100% right about Rice, while I think that she would do a great job it would have been a poor choice because of her ties with Bush.
Censored, I’m pro-choice (to a point, it shouldn’t be used as birth control) as well but I’m not slamming and insulting her without knowing much about her. Lucky was correct, maybe her record should be looked at, just as Obama’s was, before automatically making judgement like you have.
By the way Censored, I would think that Kaine is qualified for VP. I don’t think he is a very effective Gov. He can’t get his transportation package passed, his Pre K program was watered down so much its a shell of what he wanted. But is he qualified, yes. Would I vote for him regardless of party? No, based upon his ineffectiveness and inability to work across the aisle like Mark Warner did. There is too much gridlock in Washington to add Kaine to the mix.
Lucky Duck, I agree that the other women are better, more formidable candidates. But let’s be realistic about Palin’s accomplishments. The mayor of the City of Manassas has experience running a larger ‘burb than Palin did. And Alaska has a very small population compared to most states. I’m not swayed by “public service” because often that is really only “self” serving. Look at Corey Stewart. He hasn’t done the general population of PWC any favors.
Lucky Duck, I think there’s a big difference between Warner and Kaine also. I wouldn’t hesitate to vote for Warner, but Kaine would be a harder sell.
I agree with Censored…make that Ms. Censored. I don’t vote for anti choice, pro- creationism in public school candidates. Period. I don’t need to know anything else about her. She is part of the far right. Now, does that make me ultra liberal as Ed suggests? I don’t think so but perhaps being just a nudge to the left of the John Birch Society might convince some I am a true leftie. And if I am, that’s ok.
Ed, I am curious why you think we are showing our true colors and why do you think we were hiding them? Interestingly enough, you can probably find republicans, democrats, independents and libertarians here. There, I have confessed. I feel better already.
For the record, I was a Hillary supporter. I sure am not even going to consider Ms. Who? as my token ‘she-male.’ If Obama pisses me off between now and then, I will write in Hillary. I hope this clears up any misconceptions.
I honestly know nothing about the govenor of Alaska. I think that McCain has picked a woman, because now, no matter who wins, it will be history. I am pro-choice and pro-science. Teaching religion as a science(creationism) is very troubling to me, especially because we must focus on science and technology if we are to be competive in this global market.
I think what concerns me most about her appointment is the idea that Anwar will be up for drilling and exploration. At some point, like any addiction, you must make a choice to change your ways. That this woman has served in public office while still raising a family is admirable to me. Right now, we should focus on what her beliefs are as a servant of the public and how that will impact decisions in the executive office. Biden will have to be very careful not to sound condescending when they debate. And clearly, one of the tactics will be, if you attack her lack of elected office experience, you may open up Obama to the same attacks.
In the end, because of the uncertain future my children face, I believe that Obama has a vision, and you must first have the vision to create the change. Polar bears may be extinct in my life time, that is just simply unacceptable. Our dependency on coal and oil must be redirected, we have so many serious problems that require deep thought and innovative solutions, and I just don’t see McCain having that kind of insight. I still like him and honor his service to this country, but now is the time for a new ideas.
Censored, as I have said, I don’t know much about her at all. But her “record” should be debated as you did in your last post. But the insults on a personal basis are simply uncalled for and there have been more than a few on this post thus far.
Hi Elena, that was a well thought out post and I agree with some of your points. However, I think Obama falls short when it comes to his views on Iraq. If he were president I think that it would lead to more deaths (both American and Iraqi) than have occurred in the war so far by providing terrorist a set date as to when we are leaving. Once the troop levels have dwindled in his pull-out plan they will just be picked off one-by-one not to mention the terrorist cell’s that would just move in and set up shop. The Iraqi army is not even close to being able to handle conflicts yet, they need more time to train and learn. He has no military experience (and limited political experience) and I don’t trust him to make the right decision in any future conflict. Also, we do need to end our addiction to foreign oil but Obama’s no drill views will do nothing to end us sending billions to foreign countries instead of using our own resources.
The fact that reaction to Palin is generally negative on this thread is an indication that it was a tremendously bad call, and shockingly so. For hours the best the right wing zealots could do was attack an anonymous person called “cansored” because they didn’t know enough about Palin to defend her (as one person admitted).
Now, the most deeply indoctrinated Republican on this blog has finally weighed in. It takes time to self-medicate with carefully crafted political talking points. But some partisans have more of a head start than others.
The average American, as shown on this thread, is asking how a small town mayor could be chosen over contless others who were qualified. And, wondering why McCain would want to destroy the only arguments he had, re. Experience and natl. security cred.
Also from Washington Post: “Palin has less national security experience than the average Starbucks employee.”
Wish there was something new to say but Censored has said it all so well I will just say Ditto, Censored.
Lucky Duck, I’ll acknowledge my less than flattering description of Palin, but not apologize for it. Frankly, I’m sick of this country being represented by people not up to the job, beginning with our present President who can’t seem to manage a coherent speech when he does indeed lower himself to giving one. I might be more accomodating about Palin’s lack of experience (but not her political leanings) if McCain were a younger man. But he’s not young and we could easily end up with her as Commander-in-Chief. Realistically, five months ago, would you have jumped up and said, “I know a great choice for President of the United States – Sarah Palin!”
And the oil companies’ cozy connection with the Republican Party doesn’t make me feel that they’ll quickly and surely move us away from oil dependence or strife in the MidEast.
Censorded, you missed my point..several times. I am NOT defending Palin, I think she was a poor choice. But attack or debate her RECORD, not the personal insults tossed around here.
Lucky Duck, not much record out there to debate… 😉
I see, not much of a record to debate so that just leaves personal attacks.
