John Stirrup has nominated Robert Duecaster, one of the authors of the Immigration Resolution, as an appointee to the Strategic Task Force for PWC. He will sit on the Health and Human Services Committee if approved. Let me quote from Mr. Duecaster as best I can:

“This issue is not really about immigration or illegality or legality, it’s not about economics, I’m going to tell you right now what it’s about. It’s about an invasion of this country. This county is being invaded no less than if hordes of armed people were coming across its border. This invasion is not armed, but they’ve got weapons. The weapons they use are their anchor babies.”

“Mark these words, we are going to repel this invasion, one way or another. You can part of that repulsion or be on the other side.”

Mr. Duecaster is the secretary for Help Save Manassas, which is recognized by The Southern Poverty Law Center as a “Nativist” group. In addition to this label, the Anti-Defamation League has now added Save the Old Dominion AND Help Save Manassas to their list of “Extremist” anti immigrant organizations. You will see that Mr. Duecaster uses many of the code words that ADL lists as tools to move extremist rhetoric into the mainstream. I find this nomination unaccpetable! What is John Stirrup thinking?

A closer look at the public record reveals that some of these supposedly mainstream organizations have disturbing links to, or relationships with, extremists in the anti-immigration movement. Often identified in the media or their mission statements as “anti-illegal immigration advocacy groups,” they attempt to distort the debate over immigration by fomenting fear and spreading unfounded propaganda through the use of several key tactics:
Describing immigrants as “third world invaders,” who come to America to destroy our heritage, “colonize” the country and attack our “way of life.” This charge is used against Latinos, Asians and other people of color.

Using terminology that describes immigrants as part of “hordes” that “swarm” over the border. This dehumanizing language has become common.

Portraying immigrants as carriers of diseases like leprosy, tuberculosis, Chagas disease (a potentially fatal parasitic disease), dengue fever, polio, malaria.

Depicting immigrants as criminals, murderers, rapists, terrorists, and a danger to children and families.

Propagating conspiracy theories about an alleged secret “reconquista” plot by Mexican immigrants to create a “greater Mexico” by seizing seven states in the American Southwest that once belonged to Mexico.

Blaming immigrants for eroding American culture, institutions and quality of life and impacting our environment and natural resources.

This anti-immigrant propaganda and rhetoric, once the domain of hate groups, is now part of the lexicon used by anti-immigration advocacy organizations, politicians and media figures considered mainstream.

In this report, part of a series of reports on immigration and extremism, ADL exposes those individuals and groups who are playing a key a role in mainstreaming extremist rhetoric in the immigration debate in various aspects of American life.

144 Thoughts to “Stirrup Appointment Could Mean Another Year of Extremist Duecaster Shaping County Policy”

  1. Make no mistake. We are going to “repel” HIS invasion.

Duecaster is what the cartoons would portray as an evil old man.

It’s time to shut the television off.

  2. Gee, the last time Mr. Duecaster penned a law for the BOCS, it turned out be an 11 MILLION DOLLAR FIASCO, but rather than admit the mistake and collaborate with his fellow Supervisors for a change, “Weasel John” Stirrup is signaling ZERO remorse, and in fact gleeful defiance in light of the fact that his indulgence in mob democracy has cost this county millions of dollars, severely damaged our reputation, and crippled our economy.

Clearly this is Weasel John’s way of answering for the Citizens Satisfaction Survey, which, thanks to his handiwork, proves that OUR OWN CITIZENS have lost trust in our Board of Supervisors and our government as much as the surrounding region and the nation.

And clearly this is Weasel John’s way of plugging his ears and squeezing his eyes shut in light of the Immigration status report (of the same day as his appointment announcement) showing that only 1.6 percent of the crime committed in this county over six months has been by undocumented persons, and that an unknown but significant percentage of the ones picked up by ICE end up coming right back here within a few months.

Memo for Weasel John Stirrup, the indicators that the Duecaster Immigration Resolution was a childishly misguided policy are going to continue. If, each time you face another undeniable blow to the advisability of the Immigration Resolution (something you WERE warned about by Chief Deane), you reinforce public doubt about your own competence with an equally poor decision, you gain nothing more than a little five year old on the corner with his eyes shut and his ears plugged screaming, “wah, wah, wah, wah, wah.”

It proves you don’t care about outcome. It proves you don’t know how to change course when you are proven wrong. It proves that, like Corey Stewart, you are unable to switch off the electioneering hat and begin to govern. And it proves you are not FIT to govern in a representative democracy.

Wait a second, this is Advocator from bvbl.net! He has said some of the most disturbing comments ever attributable to any Help Save Manassas member. Do the Supervisors know that he posts under that screen name?

This appointment just displays gross negligence on behalf of John “Stupid” Stirrup. How can he not know that his appointee has said and I quote:

Twinad said: So this is the type of person John “Stupid” Stirrup believes will best represent him and his views on a Strategic Task Force? That is truly frightening.

Stupid Stirrup: If you are out there, I do live in your district, so I am one of your constituents too, and I cannot believe this mentally unstable man is the best representative you could find for the task force. It is truly dismaying to anyone who has standards of decency.

  5. Yep, “Advocator” is welcome to write public policy as far as “Weasel John” Stirrup is concerned. “Advocator,” who called for a mob riot with pitchforks and shovels after the Immigration Resolution was castrated on April 29th, (probably because he felt castrated seeing his precious law rolled back to the same standards the Commonwealth of Virginia now has) is back with a vengeance, ready to damage our reputation, our economy, and our public safety in 2008/2009 even more than he did in 2007.

The man posts racist rants in the internet with regularity, and does little to scale back his hatred when he writes a letter to the editor. He is one of the most recognizable disgraces to this county, but not because he is a hateful and resentful coward.

He is a disgrace to this county because Weasel John Stirrup and Corey Stewart have provided him with an official platform, inside our government, to infect county policy with the hate he spews standing at that podium at Citizens Time, and pours in to every known piece of writing we have seen from him.

You can’t blame Weasel John for having bigots in his district. You can blame him for letting them rot his brain, and rot the reputation of this county, by inviting them into his (shrinking) circle of advisers and advocates.

  6. Well, Wally Covington sure knows because I sent him the whole thing with explanations…..quotes and all.

I can blame Stirrup because HE is a bigot which is why HE supports them.

I can blame Stewart for the same thing.

    Birds of a feather……

  7. Stirrup has no sense of decency. Remember, he left his previous county so he could flee the invasion.

  8. Kgott, about Stirrup saying he left Arlington to get away from immigrants. Some people just prefer to live among their own kind. It’s also possible that Weasel John, as a life-long Republican operative and lobbyist, needed to run in an area where there is less awareness of the activities of lobbyists, and more Republicans. But on the other hand, when he testified (poorly) before the U.S. Civil Rights Commission, Weasel John‘s own words sounded a lot like Mr. Duecaster’s. He just didn’t scream them.

The problem is that when men like this are given the stamp of official government, Stirrup being in elected office, and Duecaster being a policy guru for the county, it sends a message to the public that our county is a place where such sentiments are nurtured and in fact institutionalized.

I’m beginning to think the bad reputation is permanent.

  9. WHWN, good luck to Stirrup if he wants to live “among his own kind.” This is the DC Metro area. Sorry. No clone colonies. He’ll have to establish a commune. I hear Waco has some cheap land available.

Some people happen to think PEOPLE and living things are “their own kind” but I guess that’s not a common belief around here.

As for the reputation being permanent…it doesn’t have to be. This county wasn’t like this before so why should have it have to stay the way it is now?

  10. Come to think of it, if we “repel the invasion” of the Red Dots and the resolution and discrimination, we could come out of this as national heroes.

Smart politicians will play it that way. Of course, there seems to be a moratorium on smart politicians now days.

  11. ShellyB

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I had seen this Duecaster performance once before, but I had no idea he wrote the Immigration law in PWC. That is really atrocious. Does the average person know this, or am I just out of it?

Anyway, the Anti Defamation League’s analysis of hate tactics and rhetorics helps to illuminate what he meant by “invasion!!!!!” And, you’re putting it down in writing really seals the coffin:

“This issue is not really about immigration or illegality or legality, it’s not about economics, I’m going to tell you right now what it’s about. It’s about an invasion of this country. This county is being invaded no less than if hordes of armed people were coming across its border.”

One tends to gloss over the real message in these words due to the jaw-dropping hatred with which they were delivered.

You see, I am one of what I think is a majority of people in America who DO think the issue is about economics. And, I REALLY DO think the issue boils down to “illegality or legality.” But if you’re taking your stand without those two lines of argument, well, what we have here is naked bigotry. And this is what Robert Duecaster is admitting here.

So, while the fact that he authored the Immigration law for us might be alarming to me, what’s really alarming is the naked bigotry in his speech at Citizens’ Time.

When it’s all said and done, I don’t think the majority of people supported the law for naked bigotry. So, I would argue that Robert Duecaster is a bad appointment for the Human Services task force because he does not represent me, or anyone who supported Chairman Stewart’s crack down (as well as being a poor representative for those who opposed it).

  12. Kgott, I apologize. It isn’t permanent. And, in fact, it’s probably a fact that Weasel John appointed Duecaster precisely for that purpose, to discourage people and make them say “oh well, the stain is permanent.”

Sorry. I didn’t mean it quite that way. Don’t let the weasels win, people! Don’t give up, don’t hand over your county. This is a sign that if we leave him unchecked, Gospel Greg, Corey Stewart, and Weasel John can indeed make things worse than they are, much worse. Sorry again.

  13. Marie

Does anyone know where I can find what the responsibilities of the Health and Human Services Committee? I am assuming it looks at things like Public Social Services, Mental Health and Mental Retardation Services, Aged, Blind, Disabled, Hospital Services, etc.

This is a very disturbing appointment. The most vunerable in our community use many of these Human Service programs, generally elderly, children, etc. The only saving grace is many of the HS programs have Federal Policy and State Policy requirements. I guess he could have some input to any locally funded programs.

People who live in the City of Manassas and Manassas Park this will have an impact on your residents as well, since Health Dept, Mental Health/Mental Retardation, Office on Aging, Hospital, etc are services that are shared. Public Social Services is not a shared program.

  14. Turn PW Blue

This would be the same Robert Duecaster that is so pro-America, “America first!” that he drives a German-made Mercedes (with the ADVCTR personalized tags and anti-immigration bumper stickers)?

  15. Ishimoto Sakamuera

When the Diamajin awakens, you will have no one to blame but yourselves.

  16. This is more of a symbolic appointment than anything, Marie. It just means that Weasel John refuses to admit he was wrong to introduce Duecaster’s Immigration Resolution to the BOCS in the secret ambush fashion that he did in secret collusion with Gospel Greg and Liar Corey. I’m pretty confident that Duecaster’s lunatic ideas will be voted down by the other 11 members of the committee, or maybe 10 since Liar Corey also gets to make an appointment.

  17. Chris

    Marie,
Here’s some of what I found from the last agenda regarding the Task Force. I did have even more detail information. I will try to find for you.
    http://www.pwcgov.org/documents/bocs/agendas/2008/0909/6-E.pdf

  18. Chris

    Turn PWBlue,
You are right once again, sir.
It’s really nice to see you. I was just asking about you the other day. I’d seen you over on bvbl.

  19. Chris

    WHWN,
Let’s not forget Corey appointed two former republican candidates. Operative word, candidate, not elected officials. I doubt all the other Supervisors only appointed citizens of their same party. In order for any task force to be successful in this county it must be comprised of citizens from all walks of life, gender, race, nationality, and political party. I hate to break the news to all the republicans in the county, but there are many like myself that don’t march to one parties platform only.

  20. Mom

Corey also appointed Gary Friedman to the PC, a former candidate yes but a former Republican candidate NOT. That having been said, the Duecaster appointment may be the last straw. I can forgive a lot of the wish washy behavior on land use from John, unlike Wally and Marty’s outright shilling for the developers, but the Duecaster appointment portends a PR nightmare and gumming up of the works with no apparent benefit. My guess is he is ready for an attempted move up from the Gainesville seat or enjoys self-immolation, in any event, if he runs for re-election, it appears Mom will have to take the gloves and primary him.

  21. Mom you are so right! The primary is where we need to defeat Stirrup. No Democrat can in in that district. But if we can win the soul of the PWC GOP away from the right wing extremists and borderline racists (the only two constituencies Weasel John is interested in representing), we can win the Gainesville seat back for the ordinary good citizens of Prince William County, and send Weasel John packing for some other part of the country were racism and extremism still dominate the Republican party.

In Prince William County, that time has passed. That, I believe, is why Weasel John and his cronies at Help Save Manassas are fighting so hard. To borrow a phrase from the Duecaster Disaster, they are “the last gasp of a defeated minority.”

Well, not defeated yet. But 2011, watch out Weasel John.

  22. Chris, my feeling is that Corey Stewart and John Stirrup are as castrated today the Immigration Resolution was on April 29th, 2008. They no longer have the power to intimidate the more moderate members of the Board, and thus no longer have power to impact county policy. These appointments, unfortunately, strike yet another deep gash in the reputation of our county government, our Board of Supervisors, and the people of Prince William County. Like the lies that Corey Stewart tells at hate group rallies and on the radio, they are stains that we will have to work to overcome in the next three years, before we decisively throw them both out of office.

Hopefully, economic recovery will not have to wait that long. If the Supervisors begin to stand up to the Hate Brothers, that will go a long way.

  23. Mom

Careful, careful, you might wake Wilbourn from his slumber and I’ve run out of wooden stakes to drive in him.

  24. Chris

    Mom,
I’d missed the Gary F appointment. I stand corrected. What aspect of the task force will Gary be on?

  25. Yes well I hope someone new emerges. There is time.

  26. Chris

    Mom,
You are on a roll again. No more wooden stakes, eh?
Yes, Wilbourn must remain in his slumber. Of course, there are many around that don’t even know about Mr. Ed., because they’ve not been around long enough.

  27. AMommymouse

Did everybody see this cartoon? Help Slay Manassas –
    http://luxuriouschoices.blogspot.com/

  28. Chris

    WHWN,
We heard about the Power of Five last election season. Perhaps, the Power of SIX will prevail.

Economic recovery is stil a couple of years off though. The recovery will come about the time of the election in 2011. And of course, they’ll be trying to credit for that.

It always, amazes me the inconsistancies. We’ve heard the day laborers were gone from the Coverstone 7-11, yet, at Tuesday night’s Public Hearing we heard the same ones claiming the day laborers were gone, claiming they are there. Now, I’ve seen with my own two eyes they are still at that 7-11 sitting on crates at the 7-11’s front door. When will people get it, you can’t have both ways. Which one is it? Are they there or aren’t they?

  29. Chris

    Amommy,
I am in tears! Excellent work by the artist.

  30. Mom

I ran out of felled timber to make them out of once Wilbourn was voted out. Now I have to make my stakes out of the recycled campaign signs and fliers that litter the roadsides, and they just aren’t sturdy enough to penetrate the local pols egos. May have to go old school and resort to the baseball bat, wooden not aluminum of course.

  31. “Kgott, I apologize.”

No apology necessary! I know Stirrup appointed Doo-Doo Caster because he wants to spit in everyone’s face.

Ishi, what the hell are you talking about?

  32. El Guapo

Who do we write to? Who do we email? Who do we call to protest the nomination of this sicko? If anyone plans on taking this to the streets, let me know.

  33. El Guapo, you can certainly write the Board and ask them to vote against Weasel John’s appointment at the Board meeting on Tuesday. But do understand that you are asking a lot. It’s long been a custom on the Board not to challenge the nominations of other Supervisors, no matter how deleterious to the county and its reputation, so that your own appointments will not be challenged. It’s basically a way to save themselves a lot of headache, knowing that they really don’t have to take the advice of these committees if they don’t want to.

I know there are democratic purists on this blog, and for you, perhaps this is unacceptable. But it’s just the way the Board works as has worked for a long time. It’s kind of like how they all vote unanimously even when there is great dissension on the Board (even Corey Stewart voted for the suspension of Probable Cause on April 29th for instance, and even Hilda Barg voted to fund the Resolution on Oct. 16th). These customs have the effect of freezing the people out of the process, keeping us at an arm’s length, but it also keeps the peace on the Board and allows them to do the people’s business.

I can hear the purists attacking me as I type this.

I doubt there are enough democratic purists on the Board … those who believe your vote represents your conscience, and that the people’s voice is sacred and should not be polluted by politics.

I predict there will be 2, maybe three votes on the Board, protesting the societal insult and the economic injury that is the Duecaster Disaster appointment by Weasel John Stirrup.

And this is only because the Duecaster has disgraced himself, this county, and the Board one too many times … not because Duecaster wrote the failed Immigration policy that caused the social and economic disaster we are suffering under now.

It usually takes more than racism and failed policy to cause elected officials to put conscience and democratic principles above long-standing traditions of legislative decorum.

So if you are a democratic purist, write that email. If you are a political pragmatist, let them vote to approve the appointment … heck, let them vote unanimously, and the pound the heck of them starting the day after and every day until the end of budget season next year. Every choice they make we can accuse them of following the policy guidance of the guy who threatened and screamed at them “WE ARE GONNA REPEL THIS INVASION ONE WAY OR ANOTHER!!!!!!”

I some ways, it will be a relief to be able to point the finger at the Board and say: “You see, it’s not the people of Prince William County who deserve this bad reputation, it’s the people who represent us.”

Yes, the bad reputation and the legacy of disastrous policies belongs to The Board of County Supervisors, or at least the ones who vote in the majority on Tuesday just to make it look neat and tidy. The Duecaster appointment allows the people to wash their hands of it.

  34. Mom

It’s got nothing to do with democratic purity, rather, it’s all about protecting ones own interests and the image of the BOCS, often at all costs. It comes down to nobody on the BOCS having a set of stones large enough to publicly (but politely) whack another supervisor with one of their gauntlets (I personally prefer to leave my fist in mine when I use them) lest everyone’s knickers get in a twist and threaten their own pet projects. It’s all about perception. John votes note on Wally running water to the RC, then votes in favor of an identical application in his district which Wally then opposes. Absolutely no consistency, especially when it involves projects or issues in their own districts.

  35. Hey WHWN,

Since you are the expert on all things politics, what do predict about McCain and the Anti-Immigrant Movement. Match made in Heaven? Or a fight to the bitter end?

    http://americannewsproject.com/node/120

  36. Chris

It really doesn’t matter who the BOS appoints. The BOS will ulimately do what they want to do. Different views are opposed all the time.
    Mom,
Fireside was just the beginning. When they get there bill from the PWCSA I wonder how much they’ll be liking that running water.
Consistency, haha, that’s one thing this BOS won’t be accused of anytime soon in my opinion.

  37. Censored bybvbl

A primary for John Stirrup sounds like a good idea. There should be an appropriate punishment for one who has managed to squander so many of our tax dollars. Recommending the repulsive Robert Duecaster to be a representative on any board/committee/tea party is giving the middle finger to the tax payers of this county.

  38. NotGregLetiecq

And if he wins the primary, we need to recruit a conservative independent to run against him in the general. I agree, a Democrat can’t win out in Gainesville. We can throw are support behind an independent and convince the Dem’s not to run. Down with the Weasel!

  39. NotGregLetiecq

Mom, so are you proposing we stand against Weasel and the Disaster, and pressure the sane Supervisors to vote against Duecaster on the committee? I’d be game.

  40. Marie

    Chris,
Do not spend time looking for more info. From reading the agenda I had my question answered. I am familiar with all those strategic plan goals for Health and Human Services.

  41. Chris

    Marie,
You are welcome. I thought that would help.

  42. Ladies and Gents:

    1. We tell them loud and clear DOO-DOO needs to be flushed.

    2. We tell them loud and clear that appointees must meet certain criteria (as in…”Do you or have you ever belonged to a radical, racist, and/or hate group?”), pass background checks and sign ethical statements. Furthermore, I don’t think party members should qualify for committees. The purpose of a citizens’ committee is to fix problems, not push partisan agendas.

This small town “let’s appoint our buddies” crap doesn’t cut it.

  43. Robb Pearson

Extremely, extremely sad, disturbing, and disgusting.

Mr. Duecaster’s paranoid radicalism should alarm all residents of Prince William County.

  44. NotGregLetiecq

I will write an email to the sane Supervisors to let them know they should not be intimidated by Gospel Greg any more. He sent out a huge email blast to thousands of people supposedly, saying that Duecaster’s Immigartion Resolution (or what’s left of it) would be nixed after the Supervisors saw Chief Deane’s report UNLESS they came to Citizens’ Time to defend their territory (our government). Well, four people came out. Two in the day time and two at night. And one of them was the Duecaster Diasaster and one of them was Gospel Greg himself.

    Some army!

Supervisors, you can stand up to this puffed up exaggerated angry mob of four.

Just say no to the Duecaster Disaster!!!!

  45. I’ll write an email to my Supervisor. I happen to know she doesn’t like Duecaster very much, and, she’s not afraid to stand up to bullies.

  46. Who here is going to write the letters to the editor?? How about some new names in the MJM/PN?

  47. Is anyone going to speak in opposition to this appointment at the next citizen’s time?

I think that would be a great way to help defeat this. I would definitely speak about this at the next citizen’s time if I wasn’t going to be on vacation out of the country next week.

    This appointment is absolutely insane.

  48. Elena

Whether or not Robert Duecaster is confirmed, at least in my mind, should not be the main focus. Ensuring the public record demonstrates there was opposition, AND why, is the most relevant reason to speak to the appointment of Robert Duecaster.

  49. Juturna

Look at it this way – can you think of anyone who has a greater need than Ducaster to be locked in a room full of therapists and social workers?
