KG, on the bailout….I’m with You!!!
SEE, AW???? Even me and Slowpoke can agree on some things! And we’ve insulted each other quite often, I might add 🙂
OH… I also want to point out, I have 2 family memebers that are vetrans..One Air Force and the other Navy and I can tell you..when they would see another countries flag waving in the wind on American soil..it devastated them…and they felt like it was a slap in the face..so if you stand behind all the vetrans and consider them heros then how can you approve of another countries flag being used in demonstrations, waving outside of businesses, being displayed in front of their homes etc etc..isnt that kinda like talking out of both sides of your mouth???
I never suggested that I had a beef with this blog, NGL (if I did, it was inadvertent)…only with a couple of the commenters. Of course, I have also “had a beef” with commenters over at BVBL, and have said so when I was unable to communicate with them privately. Actually, at least two of them have made their way over here, and another seems to be one of your targets…Advocator. Rude and inappropriate knows no political boundaries.
I rarely indulge in self-aggrandizement…generally only when I’m provoked. It does not, however, make me untruthful Slowpoke.
JC, given your statement what do you think of Duecaster calling Vietnam Vets “trash”? That doesn’t fly well with me (pun hee hee).
Immigrants serve this country as well. And immigrants protest unjust laws, just as we do. Why should we ask them to give up their pride in their cultures? We don’t demand Confederate Flag wavers to do that, no matter how much that might offend some people.
No one “subverts” a radio station! The media tries to cater to everyone. The FCC says it’s okay. If other languages offend you, don’t turn on the Hispanic soap operas. DC 101 offends ME. I don’t listen to it. I wish they would clean up their programs, but since they have an audience, they aren’t going to do that.
I agree let’s have a thread about the bailout. I think we can finally throw the rest of the dirt on the coffin of “Trickle Down Economics.”
AW, I’m glad you don’t have a beef with all of us on the blog. So you’re not down with Duecaster? That’s good news. I find it really strange that the anti-immigrant position is so desperate to separate themselves from the trip wire of racism, and yet they go and nominate this Duecaster knowing full well the things he has said on TV.
“JC, given your statement what do you think of Duecaster calling Vietnam Vets “trash”? That doesn’t fly well with me (pun hee hee)”
It stung and it hurt to say the least..
“Immigrants serve this country as well. And immigrants protest unjust laws, just as we do. Why should we ask them to give up their pride in their cultures”
ummm we didnt ASK them to give up their culture, they CHOSE to by taking the OATH!
“We don’t demand Confederate Flag wavers to do that, no matter how much that might offend some people”
uhhh… isnt the confederate flag one of many flags used during the civil war to show confederate states In America??
Your comparing apples to oranges…..

Our Government is catering to everyone, thats the problem..when does the exception to the rule stop…when the demand will be sooo much that the supply will run out??
pretty soon people will lose their homes…Oh wait thats already happening
ummmmm
gas prices will skyrocket…oops that already happening
uhhhhhh
people wont be able to afford health care…Uh Oh… most Citizens CANNOT already afford health care
food prices will rise along with taxes….DAMN thats already happening too….
Excellant point NGL and good news AW. My eyes continue to be opened when I listen to board members confuse all Hispanic sounding names or voices with illegals. Out loud. In public. On TV. Again and again.
Granted, after 9-1-1 everyone looked at easterners differently. Granted most are going to look at brown skinned people differently and make assumptions. The difference is when your leaders do it, out loud and in public and on TV and over and over again it legitimizes it. IMHO what our elected leadership has done to the residents of PWC is to legitimize this perspective and announce it to all. This does not mean that I am against illegal immigration. It means I am against HOW the problem is being approached and what is being said on my behalf.
How hard is that for folks to understand?

AWC,
Huh? I must have missed something. I don’t think you’re untruthful. I was astounded that KG and I both agree that the taxpayers shouldn’t have to foot the bill for bad loans, be they mortgage, student loans, credit card debt, or car loans. I’m really encouraged by the grass-roots efforts to let our politicians know we’re not too jazzed about this bailout plan. See folks, it’s not just about illegal immigrants! Let’s just not go to the “most of these businesses made loans in all of the above-mentioned forms to illegal immigrants who couldn’t pay them back, so they deserve what they get” place, or we’ll be back at it again! 🙂
I just went back and reread your comment Slowpoke, and I did indeed misunderstand. I was referencing this part of your comment, “40 years of political activism…I’m not sure what’s less surprising….that or that Clay Aiken is gay,” and was thrown by the fact that kgotthardt agreed with you. I was reading it as “what’s MORE understanding” rather than less…totally changes the meaning. Sorry.
I was seeing red at the time, but still no excuse.
I’m waiting for KG to change her mind because we agree 🙂

______________
JC, CULTURE and LOYALTY are two different things. What, I have to give up Italian food and the Italian flag because I’m a citizen? Come on.

The Confederacy considered itself a separate country, if you recall. In fact some would STILL like to be a separate country. Same thing but it’s even closer to home because the flag represents a split in our nation.
Slowpoke, why would you be astounded that I loathe the power the business and banking lobbyists have in our government? They screw people over all the time, just like our government has screwed us by not following its own laws and then failing to revamp those laws when they no longer make sense.
I know, I know….immigration issues are supposed to make us deadly enemies, right? 🙂
Just goest to show ya…..
To KG: And I eat tacos and burritos and Steak and Fries, spaghetti and meatballs and occasionally, Deer meat…WTFudge does what I digest have to do with immigrants that come to this Country and TAKE AN OATH they SWORN TO OBEY…If the intent was NOT TO OBEY then why was the Oath established??..and the fact you are asking Americans to “look the other way” makes you less Loyal….hmmmmmmm
As for the confederate flag, Here you go adding “your spin” BUT..Bottom line
the confederate flag (one of many flags used during the civil war)was to show confederate states In America…IN AMERICA ONE NATION UNDER GOD…etc etc…
Thread is up about the economy. Your wish is my command.
The confederate flag means different things to different people….all 10 of them. To some folks it is used as a symbol of hate. To others, it is a sign of their heritage and shows respect for their ancestors. I tend to judge the behavior that goes with the flag rather than judging the flag. I try to be respectful of others on that subject as long as they are respectful of the flag and others.
JC, It doesn’t bother me to have others fly a flag of another nation even on my soil. During the Olympics or during World Cup many of my neighbors rooted for their country of origin. They flew their flags on their porches.
I have more vets in my family than you can shake a stick at. It didn’t bother them either. Where I would draw the line is if they were disrespectful to my flag. Then they might get punched in the nose or told off. I try not to be ethnocentric.
Actually KG- Have you ever stepped foot on foreign soil??? If you had then you know that you must accomodate that Coutries Culture or you could offend, which is punishable by law there..USA is relaxed when it comes to diversity and differnt cultures but when the demand starts to become MORE than it can supply, lines have to be drawn and rules need to be enforced before its to late and theres nothing left!
MH- I agree about the confederate flag.. you are right..and if you have vets in your family then you of allll people understand Why I cannot accept or comprehend the fact that becoming a US citizen is a choice and if you choose to become a citizen you take an oath…and if you fail to obey that Oath…then I have to question WHY are you here?
am I making any sense to you??? Im still on the fence but I have to be honest, the economy sucks right now and soon there will be nothing left if some lines arent drawn and laws enforced..Does that make me a bad person because I want to make sure theres a future for my kids once they are grown???
JC,
I think we all want that for our kids. I don’t think that what we envision for our kids is usually the world they end up in.
I think the economy is very serious at the moment. Unless we get that fixed, nothing else matters, in my opinion.
JC, I think the economy is scary right now. But it wasn’t so scary when this whole immigration thing erupted. In fact, the housing market was great! The problem with the economy goes waaaaay beyond immigration and into the core of our political system which is corrupted by lobbyists.
I don’t know why you call things “spin” when they are historical perspective but….whatever. And yes, I’ve been to Mexico where they don’t have a problem trying to speak to me in English and have a variety of flags flying around. I’m curious if you’ve ever asked anyone with a foreign flag why they hang it…..I mean sincerely have asked to get an honest answer.
Incidentally, lots of Italians hang Italian flags. So do the Irish. And they don’t put the US flag next to it. It’s just a statement of cultural pride. When you become a citizen, you don’t give up your heritage. You give up your foreign citizenship.
Just Cause, I am coming to this a bit late and this is going to sound harsh, but I really found that item from another site appalling, ahistorical, and kind of ridiculous. For an example of the ridiculous, the person opens with a mention of illegal aliens and then uses an example of default Spanish in South Florida. Yet the overwhelming Spanish-language influence in S. Florida comes from the Cuban American community that is hardly full of illegal aliens. Basically if you are Cuban and you get here, you are in.
The person thinks it would be a good idea to ban any media in languages other than English? First that is unconstitutional. Second, there has never been a time in this country where immigrant communities have not had their own press or other media in languages other than English. There is no official language in the United States. And it isn’t just immigrants who use other languages. This person would appear to want to forcibly take non-English languages away from the Amish, the Hasidim, and other groups.
The person claims that entire “regions” of the United States have had all other groups than Latinos “pushed out.” Name one region like that, bearing in mind what a region is.
The person appears to make no distinction between Latinos who are native-born citizens, naturalized citizens, legal resident aliens, or illegal aliens. Guess what, all four groups have people who have preserved aspects of their language and culture while living here as have many other groups in American society. Yes please, go out there and tell Irish Americans they can’t carry the Irish flag in St. Patrick’s Day celebrations or in support of a united Ireland. Go out and tell Italian Americans no Italian flags in Columbus Day parades, etc. etc.
Finally, have you read the text of the oath that naturalized citizens take? There is nothing in the oath about giving up one’s language or culture. In fact, the section on fidelity to the Constitution would make such a requirement unconstitutional. The oath’s wording is about political allegiance, although since the US allows dual citizenship, even that requirement is modified routinely.
You seem to really want the oath to say something it doesn’t and that law has NEVER interpreted it as saying. This isn’t even to mention the many children born as citizens here to immigrant families who often are fully bilingual and bicultural. Do you wish them to take some special (nonexistent) oath too?
“The oath’s wording is about political allegiance, although since the US allows dual citizenship, even that requirement is modified routinely.”
Since when does the US permit permanent dual citizenship (which I assume you are implying)? Although I had dual citizenship until I came of age, I had to officially declare my US citizenship and renounce my German citizenship at that time, or lose the opportunity…and be unable to vote. It so happened that I enjoyed that dual citizenship because I traveled back and forth to Germany a few times before the deadline, but I had to travel on a German passport (I was not an official US citizen…that’s how it worked). When did they change that? By the way, back in those days the age of majority was 21, not 18.
AW Cheney, This was something I already knew about, because I know people who travel on two passports (a US one and another one, legally) and hold citizenship in the US and another country (legally), but it is also info easily available from official sources.
Here is a statement from our state department.

There have been quite a lot of shifts in citizenship law on this matter in the past decades. I can offer some links, or you could use Google.

Ack. I have no idea how that posted twice. My apologies.
