My hope is that we are on a new course, and immigration reform will be a part of that new direction. This video was a culmination of a rally that I believe set the tone for Prince William County, for Virginia and for a nation. If you missed it, I strongly urge you to watch it, you too will get fired up to help create a new and positive direction for our country. We are ALL a part of the solution.
PWC Turned Blue!
Prince William
Obama 73,585 56%
McCaiin 57,177 44%
96% of precincts reporting
Manassas and Manassas Park followed similar patterns of turning blue.
What does this tell us?
Additionally, congratulations to a personal favorite of mine, Senator Mark Warner! Mark Warner has the ability to reach across the aisle and get things accomplished.
Huge Losses for Anti-Immigrant Crowd
It was a tough night for the anti-immigrant crowd. The Senate lost Elizabeth Dole. The Pennsylvania Mayor of Hazelton who gained national recognition for his ‘illegal-alien’ lunacy LOST his Congressional Race. And, Virginia Congressman Virgil Goode who has a propensity for calling US Citizens – ‘Anchor Babies’ at a mind boggling pace has lost his re-election bid.
Then when we look at the so called “Americans for Better Immigration” which is part of the NumbersUSA conglomerate, they were UNABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY OPPOSE ANY of the 27 Congressional and Senate candidates that they identified as being “more opposed than supportive of overall immigration reductions”.

President Elect Obama…..”YES WE CAN”
Senator McCain gave an excellent concession speech. We are thankful for his grace at what must have been a very emotional time for him. President Elect Obama gave the MOST thoughtful speech I have ever heard, bar none except Martin Luther King and the I have a Dream.
OBAMA WINS VIRGINIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Turn PW Blue, now you can add “turn VA blue” to your Moniker!!!!!! Wow, Virginia, since 1964, prior to desegregation, has not voted Democratic. And look at us now, putting our first African American in the executive office, take my keys Poor Richard, I must be drunk!
Ohio goes to Obama! Is the race over?!!!!!!!

Election Results
As the election poll close across the Country, it’s time to wait and watch. Some channels are reporting states based on exit polling but CNN is playing it safe and waiting for the votes to be counted. Basically, at this point South Carolina, Oklahoma, Kentucky & Tennessee are in the McCain column, while Vermont & Illinois are in Obama’s. It’s 8:20pm and thus far only Brentsville District in Prince William has reported with the following results:
Barack Obama and Joe Biden 351 29.97%
John McCain and Sarah Palin 810 69.17%
Additionally, no surprise that Mark Warner will replace the retiring John Warner as a Virginia State Senator.

Why I’m Voting McCain
Obviously there’s a lot of exuberance over Obama, but even after attending his Spring Rally at Nissan, I never caught Obama fever. I give credit to the many faithful, intelligent and kind Obama supporters who have shown a great deal of respect in presenting their candidate’s position.
I believe both candidates deserve our respect and whomever wins deserves our support.
But these are the reasons why I’m voting for McCain:
- I have serious reservations about Obama on the abortion issue. The next President will have the opportunity to appoint Supreme Court Justices who’s influence on cases could have long lasting effects on our nation.
- I feel uneasy that a family with two working adults could meet the definition of ‘rich’, if they earned $200,000/year.
- I’m concerned that with the House, Senate, and President all being from the same party that bipartisanship practices will be abandoned.
Election Day Blues? Plant your comments here:
This thread will be a hodge podge of election day comments. I have gotten 7 emails asking for it, so here it is. Please let us know which polling sites are crowded, how long the lines are, etc.
At least 80,000 people, packed in like sardines, attend Obama’s last rally, I’m one of them!
Wow, what an amazing event. Packed in tight, the people attending the final Obama rally were excited and positive about tomorrow! I was there with a friend of mine, we arrived around 5:30, and watched, as the crowd grew, and grew and grew……. people as far as the eye could see! It was an amazing event. We met three older gentlemen from Quebec Canada. They had been volunteering for the Obama campaign! Two had also been chiefs of staff for the head honcho of Quebec (I can’t remember what the formal title is of that position). They were very excited, having been intrigued bystanders of many past elections, including JFK. They said that people around the world were hoping that Obama would win, and with his win, restore the great name of The United States of America. They LOVE America, our ideals, for them, represent the best and worst that can encompasses a democratic country. By the end of the night we we were dancing and cheering together. As we said our good byes, we wished each other well and left hopeful that tomorrow will bring about a change this country desperately needs.
In Honor of ‘Toot’ : Madelyn Payne Dunham
It was just announced that Barack Obama’s grandmother who he called ‘Toot,’ Madelyn Payne Dunham (pictured on right), has passed away. Grandparents play special roles in children’s lives and he often spoke of how much Toot had sacrified for him. Rest in Peace, Toot. Thank you.
Obama Is Coming! Obama Is Coming!
Western Prince William and Manassas are all aflutter preparing for the big Obama Rally tonight at 9 PM. My roving reporter has called in that there are already about 50 men, women and children lined up at the lower Fairgrounds entrance. Gates open at 5 PM.
I will post news and pictures as they trickle in. Meanwhile, here is an open thread for tonight’s events.
Has anyone heard who the entertainment will be?
Update: The following video is added from last night. Governor Tim Kaine and Former Governor Mark Warner introduced the real entertainment, Obama!
PWC Declared Most Ethnically and Racially Diverse in Region
Major thanks to Censored by Bvbl for writing the lead to this thread:
A regional report commissioned by Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerald Connolly shows Northern Virginia to be a different place than it was thirty years ago. Amid large population growth, the outer Southern rim of Northern Virginia has seen a demographic change as a more ethnically and racially diversified population has sought affordable housing in the outer suburbs.
The study, which offers a preview of the 2010 census reports:
“Of the 270,000 people who moved to Northern Virginia between 2000 and 2007, 75 percent settled in Loudoun County, Prince William County, Manassas or Manassas Park.
In Prince William, the growth was driven almost entirely by minorities, who accounted for 94 percent of the population increase. In contrast, the inner suburbs of Arlington County and Alexandria, once considered gateway communities for immigrants, have lost minority residents since 2000, becoming more white and more affluent. “
Election Day Demonstrations Include Math
Most self respecting kids will probably be joining the parents who are demonstrating against the PWC Schools math program. Aren’t kids supposed to hate math?
I just interviewed a 7 year old who is visiting. He told me he loved math and he got to use manipulatives and pencil and paper. He also knew that 8 + 9 = 17. Last night I interviewed a long- time PWC English teacher who sat through several in-service presentations of Math Investigations. She told me that for the first time, math made sense to her.
So what’s all the fuss about? Math Investigations. Apparently a few parents are upset that kids aren’t taught math they way they were taught back in the day. Student needs change. Technology changes. The skills that kids need to be successful in the 21st century are not the same skills kids needed who attended school back in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. To quote Bob Dylan, ‘The Times They are A’Changin’.
Anyone who wants to learn more about the elementary math program in PWCS should talk to their child’s teacher or go to the PWCS Mathematics Web site where they can see program evaluation reports and many other valuable resources for parents. Parents can also access all materials for teachers and administrators, such as planning calendars and pacing guides at the site. Any parent wanting to see the materials may contact their child’s school or visit the PWCS Staff Library.

The event will begin at 9 p.m. and is expected to welcome nearly 40,000 people.
