About the only quantifiers we have as far as immigration goes come from schools. Immigrants generally have children. The Virginia State Board of Education keeps data on ethnicity as set by the federal government.
The above data shows the number of Hispanics enrolled in the 3 school systems on Sept. 30 of the given year. It looks like MC gained 74 more Hispanic students. MP lost 82 students between 2007 and 2008. The county lost 531 students from 2007 to 2008. I can just see Corey Stewart and Greg hi-fiving each other. It appears, however, that Help Save Manassas, didn’t (Save Manassas, that is.)
So much for the great plan that was supposed to save us all that money. Many of us will be waiting for Corey to turn that savings over to the school system. Pony up Corey Stewart! Where is that money we supposedly saved?
In the grand scheme of things,in a school system that has just under 74,000 students, losing 531 students is , to quote Mr. Stewart, a ‘drop in the bucket.’
[NOTE: Many of these students could very well be from families of legal immigrants. Additionally, they very well might not be involved with any LEP classes. Some could have lived here for generations. There is no way to tell exactly.]
Seems to me both sides are trying to make something out of these statistics that just isn’t there. I don’t think it is just limited to Stewart (one side).
Politicians use statistics to create lies all the time. Just look at what some of our congressmen make up in regards to statistics. Every year the crime statistics come out, and every year the politicians (in the city of Manassas too) try to make something out of the statistics to look like they were responsible if things appeared to get better from one year to the next. The only thing new is the attempt to link it to illegal aliens and the resolution, but I would have been surprised if that hadn’t been done.
M-H, what is your point? What does the number of legal immigrants have to do with illegal immigrants? I will tell you, absolutely nothing. If you want to fight the good fight that we need more and faster legal immigration laws I will stand right next to you and argue with you in support. But to claim that illegal immigration is some how ok because legal immigration is a slow tedious process and doesn’t allow for enough immigrants, is completely irresponsible. You need to rethink your post and if I misconstrued you posting please feel free to correct me. In fact, I work with a friend who came here from France, married a woman from Mexico and both have been here for well over ten years trying to get their citizenship. They have done it the legal way and I completely agree with you that this is unacceptable, but I will not support illegal immigration just because of the issues with legal immigration. This is the difference with most of the people on this site and most of the people on the other site. Most people on this site appear to want to allow any person to come at any time no matter the situation while it appears to me most people on the other site want a controled faster immigration process for people who deserve it. However, that does not include the author of the other site (GL).
Actually, Former, you have mischaracterized the way most people on this site feel. Where have I said anywhere that that illegal immigration is okay? I haven’t said that. I said it is a problem and not a good situation for anyone involved. I don’t know any other way to say it. however, I don’t want to just leave it at that.
We need new immigration laws on the books and we need a way for some people to be able to adjust their status. That might have to be on a case by case basis.
I do not know of one person here who is a regular who advocates for open borders. You can take that one to the bank.
Now sir, are you finished picking at this post? I do not have to make a point. People may draw their own conclusions from the information presented. I have made it a point my entire life to present information and to ask questions, not tell people what or how to think. You have Faux News for that.
Gainesville, The reason I posted this information is because I stumbled on it, looking for something unrelated. Much clamor was made last year about how much running off all the illegals was going to save the county. That has not happened. I see no savings. The schools are scrambling for money. Were it not for the stimulus package, they were be in even worse shape.
The dark screen has crowed about the ESOL crowd leaving in droves. If memory serves me, it was something like 900 kids. People on both blogs have discussed how many Hispanic and/or illegal people have left the county/MC/MP. Schools are always a good indicator because most people have children.
I only posted the information to countermand what our local politicians and their puppeteers have bragged about. I do not believe they are accurate.
M-h then what the hell was your point in pointing out to me how few people immigrate here from latin-America countries? I am well aware it takes some people 10 to 15 years to become citizens as I pointed out in my previous post. But that is not my problem. I don’t hide the fact that I want every damn last illegal out of my country. I asked the questions of you because your post #48 seemed to insinuate illegal immigration was ok because of the time and numbers of legal immigration. I asked you to let me know if I was wrong, instead you write some rambling post that still left unexplained the reason for your post #48.
Become citizens? I am speaking of simple immigration…getting a visa to be here legally.
My post #48 does not endorse illegal immigration. Frankly, Former, I am tired of your baiting and your attitude with me. I don’t need to explain my point to you. Figure it out for yourself.
Hint: We need immigration reform so people can come here legally instead of illegally.
M-H, Boo Hoo, have I hit a nerve because you do not know how to write what you mean. You still have not explained your point behind the post in question. If your tired sign off and go to bed because your whining sounds as if maybe it is past your bedtime. Ok one step further, why do we need further immigration reform? With the way the economy is right now we should ensure American citizens have a job instead of bringing in foreigners. And don’t use the excuse that they are doing jobs Americans wont do because my son-in-law just got laid off and he would love to have one of those construction jobs or other jobs Americans wont do in the Lynchburg area but can’t seem to find one.
Former, consider this a formal warning. I am extremely tired of your rudeness towards me on this blog. I need to remind you, that you are a guest. I am not a guest. I do not owe you jack.
How about this as a compromise? We require everyone here illegally to register with the feds, and in return they are not liable to be deported, but they cannot work right away, or at least not without an employer sponsor who can explain why an American would not suffice for the job.
The path-to-citizenship immigrants, after 3 years, can qualify for the right to work without a sponsor. And after 6 years they become full citizens.
We don’t want people unidentified living in the shadows, but we also cannot afford the cost of creating a police state. And now that the fear and hate has died down, there is no will to create a police state.
So we’re going to have to actually find a solution. I’m no expert, but this is what I came up with so we don’t have to worry about our boys and girls competing for jobs during a recession.
Former Com,
Your relative needs to move out of Lynchburg to find a job. Immigrant’s find jobs because they re-locate to where the jobs are. American’s have to do the same. I would not have nearly the great job I have now had I stayed in the Buffalo area 25 years ago instead of moving here.
M-H, I may be mistaken, but this is an open blog and I have not made any statements to you which are threatening or crude. If you don’t like it, go somewhere else. Explain the difference between a guest and you on this blog. You do really sound like a crybaby. Grow-up!. If you don’t like it then have me banned. I could really care less. But I will tell you this, when you get on here and issue me a formal warning, you really got to know I am not going to stop.
Twinad, I agree with you but unfortunately that is not going to happen anytime soon.
ShellyB, thank you for actually offering a solution. My idea was very similar. Mine was to seal the borders first. Provide a certain date that anyone who is here illegally to register. If they fail to register when they are found by any LEO they are deported without question. For those who did register, we take as much time as needed to research their background and if they have been law abiding in every single way then we start them on their way to citizenship. For those found to have committed any crime, they are also deported. I understand there would be alot of work and it would take a lot of time.
Former Com,
Well I’m confused on your position. In post #56 you said you wanted every single “illegal” out of here. Then in your last post you said you wanted them all to register and if they have been law abiding then they could get on a path to citizenship. Which one is your position? I agree with your last post. We don’t need people here that are criminals and not productive. But if people can show they have been here for over 10 years (or any length of time whereby their contributions can be evaluated), have productive lives and are contributing members of society, then I think there should be a path to “legality”. Not necessarity citizenship, but at least a path to something where there is nothing now.
Former, perhaps you are unfamiliar with the rules here. I will ask Alanna to repost them if I cannot find them. There are 3 administrators on this blog: the owner, Alanna, Elena, and me.
While trying to run a blog where people can express themselves, we try to discourage open rudeness and hostility towards individuals. Argue and attack ideas, not people.
Perhaps you were not aware of the rules here. I will give you the benefit of the doubt. Please try to discuss more civilly.
Here are the blog rules, as posted by Alanna.

Former Com, if you’re looking for someone to pick on, I offer myself instead of M-H. She already has a job, which is moderator, and she does a great job of it too! Thanks for your response to my idea. It is encouraging that some headway can be made with people coming at it from different life experiences and perspectives.
Former Com, re. your idea. “Deported without question” sounds a little harsh for me. What if these people were just in a heap of trouble and had to serve some time in jail, and then they are put in the same boat as the people who did register. There are a lot of Americans who fail to file taxes on time, but their penalty matches the infraction. I agree that there should be a real difference between how we treat people who knew enough to register with the feds, and how we treat people who didn’t know (or purposely did not). Like the ones who did register, if they are not a danger, they should be allowed to register and be in the same boat with those who did. It’s just such a big difference in penalty, that’s all.
M-H, if you don’t like me then ban me and you wont have to worry about me. I could care less about your feelings. Twinad, you are correct, I did give some confusing information there. While I would like to see every illegal deported, I am a realist. So if a decent proposal can be put on the table I for one would listen. ShellyB, thank you but my feeling is if you are here illegally and while you were here illegally you couldn’t stay out of trouble, no ands, ifs or buts, then you should be deported. Now, I am up for listening to certain circumstances where this could be done on a case by case situation. Now no matter what M-H thinks of me I am not a far right looney that believes everyone should be white with blue eyes, but I am also under the belief the best thing that could happen to this country is that every single illegal to self deport themselves and apply like everyone else who does it correctly. Now M-H, the rules state personal attacks are strongle discouraged and may lead to being banned. Now I went back and read my previous posts and I do not believe I ever attacked you. But if you can’t take the heat then I have an answer, don’t respond to me. But if you ban someone just because of what I wrote then you are no better than the idiots on the other site.
Former, it is my job to respond to people and to post threads. All anyone is asking you to do is be polite. That’s pretty simple.
Your problem, is you didn’t have an answer. You kept attempting to go back and take issue with everything that was said. You are the one saying ban. It just seems like exercising some self control would be a better idea. Instead of just saying you are sorry that you were rude to me, or overly aggressive, you want to bring this to some sort of win.
You can’t. No one else here talks to me like you have in this thread and that includes the guys who very much disagree with me on many things. They are all courteous. They are gentlemen. Gentlemen who know how to disagree without being disagreeable.
