It’s Not the Deed, Its the Hyprocrisy

“This is yet another reminder as to why the American people have chosen new management for the foreseeable future,” said John Weaver, a former senior adviser to  Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). “Nothing is shocking in Washington, of course, except the audacity of politicians who believe rules don’t apply to them.”

Today, as Senator John Ensign (R-Nevada) confessed to maritial infidelity, one can’t help  but remember that the good senator had called upon President Bill Clinton to resign in 1998.  Speaking of Clinton at the time, Ensign stated:

“He sent taxpayer-paid staff out to lie for him, and that is a misuse of office,” Ensign said, adding that the president had “no credibility left.”

Additionally, he led the charge against Senator Larry Craig after the infamous Minneapolis bathroom incident, calling him a disgrace.  He led an unsuccessful campaign to force Craig’s resignation.

Senator Ensign is a rising star in the Republican Party.  Probably most voters can forgive infidelity.  I am not so sure they can buy into the ‘do as I say, not as I do’ mentality that has been exhibited by Ensign.

Will this incident hurt Ensign’s career?  Will voters forgive him?  Will John Edwards be able to continue his political career?  In the post-Clinton years, how damaging are affairs to politicians?  Is the Republicans  harsher about such behavior than the Democrats?

Full story in the Washington Post.  The veterinarian turned senator has led a rather interesting life.

[***UPDATE FROM WASHINGTON POST 6/20/09: see below]

Three days after confessing an extramarital affair with a campaign aide,  Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) yesterday accused his former mistress’s husband of trying to extract a financial payout from the Nevada Republican.

Ensign’s office released a statement Friday charging that Douglas Hampton sought a large payment from Ensign, although the senator’s office refused to say how much money Hampton was seeking and whether there had been any negotiations over a payout.

Shep Smith: DHS Report Was A Warning To Us All, But The Right Went Absolutely Bonkers

Many Fox News hosts, journalists and commentators fanned the flames when DHS put out its report on domestic terrorism.  For example, Sean Hannity had the following to say on April 15:

“if you disagree with that liberal path that President Obama’s taken the country down, you may soon catch the attention of the Department of Homeland Security. Now the DHS Office of Intelligence and Analysis has issued an intel assessment that warns of a rise of what they’re calling right-wing extremism. But critics of the report say their definition of a right-wing extremist sounds awfully close to somebody who might simply just disagree with the Obama administration.”

However, Shep Smith, of “We don’t *expletive deleted* torture” fame on Fox News broke from the pack.

Once again, Shep Smith commands respect.  I am fairly rough of Fox News.  Generally speaking, I do not think they are fair and balanced.  I believe they filter our news for us more than other stations.  However, in Shep’ case, it is time for some kudos!  He definitely gets the “Did the Right Thing Award.”

Neutering Immigration Law Enforcement?

Sheriff Joe has accused Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon of attempting to neuter his immigration law enforcement.  Now where have we heard that?

It seems that Mayor Gordon has called on Sheriff Joe to denounce neo-Nazis.  Sheriff Joe countered that he has no associations with neo-nazis or far right extremists.  Mayor Gordon has concerns over people allegedly seen giving the Nazi salute to Sheriff Joe.

Additionally, Sheriff Joe allegedly has been seen  and photographed at Anti-immigration rallies with neo-Nazis, according to KTAR 92.3 FM.  A recent Phoenix New Times story  supposedly showed the sheriff posing with some of  these characters.

Sheriff Joe’s retort is:

[that] Gordon wants to neuter his enforcement of immigration laws.

“I do not support any neo-Nazi hate groups. He knows it,” Arpaio told KTAR and other media outlets. “I don’t have to apologize because I never have been connected with any of these associations, and the people know that.”

I suppose I would question the wisdom of an elected offical going to an anti-immigration rally.  I am not sure that the Phoenix New Times  is top-notch journalism either, at first glance.  There are pictures, but each case could be coincidental. I get the distinct impression, at first glance, that Phoenix New Times has no love affair with Sheriff Joe. There is an entire Arpaio Archive in the paper dedicated to him.

Perhaps if Sheriff Joe stuck to law enforcement rather than trying to whip up the masses at anti-immigration rallies, he wouldn’t have to deal with this kind of insinuation.

Don’t shoot me. I am a mere messenger. I come in peace.   Neither Anti-Bvbl or I have accused Sheriff Joe of anything, much less being a neo-Nazi sympathizer or a far right extremist.   I do not think he is either of those.  I find the scrapping and sparring between him and the mayor ironic as well as the choice of words.  Does anyone get a sense of YING and YANG?

Finally, It’s Over!

David Letterman has fully apologized to Sarah Palin and her daughters.  For the past several days, the country has been consumed with the ‘knocked up by A-Rod’ bad Letterman joke.  Did Sarah Palin fail to notice the snipes and tasteless jokes last fall?  Why is she so outraged now?  The jokes really weren’t any less crude and Letterman was hardly the most frequent offender.

At any rate, here it is–the long awaited Letterman apology:

“I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception,” he said. “And since it was a joke I told, I feel that I need to do the right thing here and apologize for having told that joke. It’s not your fault that it was misunderstood, it’s my fault. . . . So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke.”

I suppose for the next few days the cable news shows and others who have been getting so much press off of this bad joke can now analyze the apology.  One has to question why, after all the jokes of questionable taste, did Sarah Palin chose now to protest?

According to the Washington Post:

Through mid-March, Leno had made 15 jokes about the Palin daughter’s pregnancy, Stewart had told four on “The Daily Show,” and Letterman checked in with eight, according to an analysis of late-night humor by the Center for Media and Public Affairs, a nonpartisan research organization affiliated with George Mason University.

Perhaps there is more to this than just a mother bear defending her cubs.  What do contributors think.

National 2009 Neighborhood Program of the Year–Weems!

Members of the Weems Neighborhood Watch accept “National 2009 Neighborhood Program of the Year” award at a recent Manassas City Council meeting. What a great job this group has done towards neighborhood improvement.

The entire story is posted from the News and Messenger. Congratulations to all involved!

Published: June 14, 2009

Volunteers filled up four city trucks with old mattresses, yard waste, gasoline, used motor oil and old paint from Landgreen Street in the Weems neighborhood in Manassas.

They mowed 12 yards, cleaned the property around six vacant homes, spread mulch around trees at Byrd Park in Manassas, and reinstalled a mail box at a “for sale” property during the “Weems Neighborhood Watch Week of Hope.”

For all of that, members of the Weems Neighborhood Watch won national awards from Neighborhoods USA as the “National 2009 Neighborhood Program of the Year” and “National 2009 Neighborhood of the Year.”

The Manassas City Council recently presented the awards, that came with $300, to members of the neighborhood watch.

Members of the watch organized the cleanup on Landgreen Street in June 2008 because Khawaja Ahmed, a local cab driver, was murdered there in February 2008.

Watch member Cindy Brookshire said the goals of the project were to show the watch’s presence as a crime deterrent, abate the blight that had demoralized the neighborhood and bring neighbors together to solve the problems and build community.

Corn Calls Rush Limbaugh a Fool

Apparently Rush Limbaugh has made the claim that James von Brunn is a leftist. David Corn (Bureau Chief at Mother Jones) was in his glory calling him a fool on TV. Rush’s case is weak and illogical. But why do we have to put this guy on any political spectrum? David Corn makes the case for placing von Brunn squarely in the extreme right.

Department of Homeland Security Suspends “Widow Penalty”

Great News from ImmigrationImpact.com

Department of Homeland Security Suspends “Widow Penalty”
The Obama administration took another step toward restoring fairness and humaneness to the immigration system this week. On Tuesday, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano announced that she would grant a two-year reprieve to immigrants who were married to U.S. citizens but did not complete the permanent residency process because their American spouses died during the application process. This policy announcement is the latest in a series of changes the Obama administration has made that signal a change in the “enforcement only” stance of the previous administration.

Shots Fired at DC Holocaust Museum

Initial Report:

A security guard has been shot at the Holocaust Museum by a gunman. Information is still coming in that at least 2 people have been shot, one is law enforcement.

That area of DC has been sealed off. Rumors are circulating that the gunman is in custody.

Is there any end to hate crimes? A doctor, a soldier, who else will be mowed down because some people feel they have the right to take matters into their own hands.

More information as the story unfolds…

Update:  According to DC police, 2 people have been transported to Georgetown Hospital in serious condition.

Update 2: The alleged shooter has been identified as James Von Brunn. He is an anti-Semite and has been convicted of crimes related to his white supremist beliefs. There some confusion about his age at this point. If he is who police believe him to be, he is a WWII veteran and is quite elderly.

The gunman is in critical condition. The security guard is in grave condition.

This act seems to be terrorism and a hate crime at this point.

Case of H1N1 Virus (Swine Flu) Confirmed
Tuesday, June 9, 2009

Early Tuesday evening PWCS received notification of a confirmed case of the H1N1 Virus, otherwise known as “Swine Flu” involving a West Gate Elementary School student. The student is recovering at home and will not return to school until cleared by a doctor.

Our School Division has been in frequent contact with local and state health officials regarding this particular case, in accordance with established PWCS guidelines. We are closely monitoring the situation and are utilizing the guidance of the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). All appropriate measures are being taken to ensure the health of all of our students and staff.

While the spread of the virus from person-to-person continues throughout the United States, the severity of the virus does not appear to be any more severe than seasonal flu. The new guidance from the CDC does not recommend closing a school unless there is significant faculty or student absenteeism which would interfere with the school’s ability to function. School Division officials will work closely with local and state health officials to monitor the situation and determine if our response needs to change. This could include the future possibility that a school may need to close.

Parents are asked to continue to monitor their children for any of the symptoms of influenza, which include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue, and occasionally vomiting and diarrhea. If your child is experiencing any symptoms which you are concerned about, please contact your child’s healthcare provider.

This is a good opportunity to remind everyone regarding simple steps that you can take to keep your family healthy. These include:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water. Clean hands with an alcohol-based hand cleaner if soap and water are not available
  • Cover your nose and mouth with your sleeve or a tissue when you cough or sneeze
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth to prevent the spread of germs
  • Avoid close contact with those who have symptoms of flu
  • If you need to seek care for you or your child, please call ahead to your health care provider’s office and tell them what symptoms you have, so they can see you quickly and prevent exposing other people in the waiting room.
  • Parents are encouraged to report the reason for their child’s absence to the school. It is very important, during a health situation such as this, to have accurate information about absences.

The health and safety of our students and staff is always of the utmost importance. Please refer to the PWCS web site at pwcs.edu or the VDH web site at www.vdh.virginia.gov for more information and for helpful resources regarding the H1N1 Virus.

Underdog, Creigh Deeds wins VA primary!

Breaking news from the Washington Post, Creigh Deeds pulls it through at the very end.
I have to admit, I love the underdog! I believe Creigh Deeds has a real chance to win against McDonnel.

Running with the least money and fewest ties to vote-rich Northern Virginia, State Sen. R. Creigh Deeds has won the three-way Democratic primary for governor, paving the way for a rematch with Republican Bob McDonnell in the fall.

“Three weeks ago, this was a two-man race between McAuliffe and Moran,” said Quentin Kidd, a political science professor at Christopher Newport University. “Deeds was going to win the rural vote and that’s it. People are going to be talking about how he pulled this off for weeks and months.”

Deeds, a 17-year veteran of the General Assembly, lost by a mere 323 votes to McDonnell in the 2005 election for attorney general. His victory today presents Republicans with a different challenge than they were expecting: a moderate with strong ties to rural voters and a political apparatus throughout the state.

April’s Mom Blogger Created a Hoax

April’s Mom blogger ran an anti-abortion website. She told of being a single mom, pregnant with a terminally ill baby, who refused to have an abortion because of her deep Christian faith.

Followers prayed for her and her baby. They sent gifts and letters to a post office box. They followed and supported her for 2 months. Then on Sunday ‘April’ was delivered at home and supposedly died. April’s Mom posted pictures. Soon a few of the followers realized they had been duped. It was all a hoax. Social worker Rebeccah Beushausen supposedly was April’s mom. She admitted to getting addicted to the attention of the followers.

Silver Lake…the new training ground for the FBI? So much for “passive recreation” !

It is quite rare that I can become speechless, as I am sure most of you would concur. However, I found myself, having been sent an e-mail by Supervisor Stirrup’s office, in that exact frame of mind…speechless!

For those of you who have been following the saga of Silver Lake, 233 acres donated by Toll Brothers, there was a tug of war between Bull Run Conservancy vs The Park Authority. At one point, there was a suggestion, either by Board Members or the Park Authority that the donor from BRMC should just give the additional 263 acres to Prince William County and that we would control the 500 acres. Well, the donor did NOT want to relinquish control (one can see why now), and eventually, this “gift horse” fell flat on its butt. Bull Run Conservancy withdrew their offer and to this day, Silver Lake, has YET to open to the public.

Here is the latest on what is happening at Silver Lake, direclty from Supervisors Stirrups office:

The FBI will be conducting a training exercise in the vicinity of Antioch Road on June 10, 2009. Residents may hear two to three pops between 9 and 11a.m. This is a controlled training exercise and there is no danger to citizens or surrounding property. Lieutenant Bill Cox (Prince William County Police Department) can answer any questions regarding this training. He can be reached at 703-792-4951.

Please let the homeowners in your community know about the FBI training exercise at Silver Lake.

Kind regards,
Carol Ferguson
Assistant To Supervisor John Stirrup
Gainesville District Supervisor

Here is what was agreed upon when Toll Brothers donated Silver Lake:

7/10/2006 – Silver Lake to become conservatory

Toll Brothers has plans to donate more than 280 acres of open space to Prince William County in return for approval of some 400 new homes in a 2,800-home community. … In response to the community’s concerns, the developers said they would donate 282 acres surrounding Silver Lake to the county for a school, nature conservancy and a therapeutic horseback riding facility, according to a letter from Michael Lubeley, a Toll Brothers attorney. Washington Examiner

This is NOT about a training exercise, this is about almost three years of citizen participation being ignored, in fact, not just ignored, but given the proverbial middle finger in my opinion. There have been several public hearings, multiple meetings, and county attorney involvement in order to discuss the fate of Silver Lake. Overwhelmingly citizens wanted passive recreation. THIS is not passive recreation, in fact, for citizens, there is nothing but a locked gate, saying “keep out”. So much for Prince William’s county desire to provide quality passive recreation and a commitment to land conservation.

Update: The following statement has been issued

Supervisor Stirrup’s Office asked that I reply to your concerns about the Silver Lake property being used for a joint County Police Department/FBI training exercise this week. The Public Works Department has been responsible for protecting the Silver Lake property until it can be opened for public use. Public Works approved the use of Silver Lake for a joint exercise between the FBI and the County’s Police Department, and as such, I am responsible for this decision.

The exercise is a one-time event which will be held during this week and will conclude on Friday, June 12. The quarry at the site provides an ideal location for this type of exercise because it involves underwater activity by several dive teams. The Prince William County Police Department Dive Team has in the past been approved to use the quarry on a case by case basis as a training location. The exercise this week was originally planned for last summer, but was not conducted as planned. At that time, Public Works and other County agencies had evaluated potential impacts to the lake/quarry, the Silver Lake property and surrounding communities and it was determined that there would be no adverse impact as a result of the exercise. The operational benefit of having this joint exercise with the FBI will be of significant value to the County’s Police Department and the larger community.

The Board of County Supervisors is scheduled to have a Public Hearing to consider conveying the Silver Lake property to the Park Authority at their meeting on June 23 at 2PM. It is my understanding that the Park Authority will provide you with more information about future plans for Silver Lake, as well as a time frame for when it could be opened to the public. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any additional questions you may have.

Thomas Bruun
Director of Public Works
(703) 792-6253

So, now we discover this one day event is actually a three day training exercise.

2 American Reporters sentenced in North Korea

2 American reporters from Current TV, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, were sentenced to 12 years in a labor camp by North Korea on Monday. Their crime was supposedly illegal entry into the country.

It is unknown by the US if they strayed across the border or were kidnapped by border guards and taken into North Korea, to be used as pawns. The United States has been unable to obtain much information about the trial. The women were arrested in March.  They were doing investigative reporting about human trafficking in that region when they were arrested.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has expressed grave concern over the 2 women. The trial was closed to the public and the two women were tried by the highest court, so there can be no appeal.
