DOJ Recommends Reopening Prisoner Abuse Cases

The Department of Justice’s Ethics Office has recommended reopening some prisoner abuse cases. This recommendation has the potential of exposing CIA employees and contractors for prosecution. These people could be charged with brutal treatment of terror suspects.

Volumes of details from a previously unreleased 2004 report are expected to be released today by the CIA Inspector General. There has been a change in direction on this anticipated report which supposedly includes reports of deaths of some held in custody. Attorney General Eric Holder has grown increasingly disgusted with information as it has unfolded regarding treatment of detainees.

According to the New York Times today:

With the release of the details on Monday and the formal advice that at least some cases be reopened, it now seems all but certain that the appointment of a prosecutor or other concrete steps will follow, posing significant new problems for the C.I.A. It is politically awkward, too, for Mr. Holder because President Obama has said that he would rather move forward than get bogged down in the issue at the expense of his own agenda.

The advice from the Office of Professional Responsibility strengthens Mr. Holder’s hand.

The recommendation to review the closed cases, in effect renewing the inquiries, centers mainly on allegations of detainee abuse in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Justice Department report is to be made public after classified information is deleted from it.

The cases represent about half of those that were initially investigated and referred to the Justice Department by the C.I.A.’s inspector general, but were later closed. It is not known which cases might be reopened.

The implications of this article are mammoth. In all probability, a special prosecutor will be appointed. There has never been a public explanation why information from this report was never pursued. The report itself has been the topic of much debate across both the Bush administration and the Obama administration.

This political hot potato has the potential to redirect all Washington talk for a while. Have civilians been prosecuted for war time misdeeds? Have previous adminstration been held accountable like this in the past? Will Democrats and Republicans grow even more angry at each other as Eric Holder attempts to navigate this field of land mines?

Foreclosure Rates Over Around 1000 per Month in PWC

From Insidenova.com

Occoquan saw one. Woodbridge, 481. And Prince William as a whole? A total of 1,043.

That’s the number of foreclosures for July for the county, according to RealtyTrac, a group that compiles information on the housing market nationwide.

The rest of the breakdown in the county for July: Manassas, 218 foreclosures; Triangle, 84; Bristow, 74; Dumfries, 73; Gainesville, 67; Haymarket, 31; Nokesville, 12; and Catharpin, 2.

The figures aren’t so dismal when viewed through the context of a year. In July 2008, the number of foreclosures in the county stood about 1,200.

It sounds like things are still mighty grim.  The article continues stating:

In all of Virginia, 6,406 foreclosures were added in July, representing a 23 percent jump over June figures, and an 11 percent hike from July of 2008. Between January and July, total foreclosures for the state hit 39,210. And despite lower prices and a decided buyer’s market, sales haven’t been so brisk. In the six-month period that began in January, only 10,229 of those foreclosed homes have been resold.

Do these numbers mean that Prince William County respresented 1/6th of all foreclosures in the state for the month of July?  If that is the case, then why are our elected officials not horrified?

Did President Obama Play the God Card?

The continual scorched earth policy used on President Obama continues.  In a phone conference with multi-denominational  religious leaders Mr. Obama told listeners:

“I know there’s been a lot of misinformation in this debate, and there are some folks out there who are frankly bearing false witness[F]abrications…have been put out there to stop people from meeting a core moral and ethical obligation that we look out for one another … that I am my brother’s keeper, my sister’s keeper, and in the wealthiest nation on earth we are neglecting to live up to that call.”

President Obama has been accused of playing the God card and the right wing argument has now turned to keeping church and state separate.   Every president has spoken with the religious leaders of the nation.  This behavior fits in with tradition. So what’s the beef?

Apparently President Obama made reference to scripture when he spoke of ‘his brother’s keeper.’ Sorry, that doesn’t cut it in the preaching department. The Bible is also literature and educated people use scriptural references continually in every day language. It is rarely confused with proselytizing.

The only thing left to pick at is when Obama speaks of moral and ethical obligations. Religion owns neither of these terms. Some of the most ethical and moral people in history have not been noted for their religious beliefs, if they even had any. An atheist can be moral and ethical.

The moral and ethical consideration of health care reform is a huge one. When millions do not have basic health care coverage, we need to look at ourselves as a nation. No, we don’t have to adopt Great Britain’s plan, Canada’s plan, France’s plan, or anyone’s plan for that matter. What we can do is look at the good parts of each, and see how we might work them into our own program.

The Republicans had 8 years to revamp health care. They did nothing. They need to stop their whining and their reindeer games. They need to stop obstructionist politics.

Was Tom Ridge Encouraged to Use Terror Alerts for Political Gain?

Fans eagerly await former Secretary of Department of Homeland Security Tom Ridge’s new book entitled,

The Test of Our Times: America Under Siege…and How We Can Be Safe again. Secretary Ridge had not intended to write a ‘tell all’ book but he grew increasingly concerned over our complacency over matters of security.

Promotional material from Thomas Dunne Books includes:

Ridge was never invited to sit in on National Security Council meetings; was “blindsided” by the FBI in morning Oval Office meetings because the agency withheld critical information from him; found his urgings to block Michael Brown from being named head of the emergency agency blamed for the Hurricane Katrina disaster ignored; and was pushed to raise the security alert on the eve of President Bush’s re-election, something he saw as politically motivated and worth resigning over.

Tom Ridge stands out, like Colin Powell, as a respected stateman who places country over politics. His new book is bound to stir up a hornet’s nest.

“What Tom Ridge disclosed confirms our worst suspicions,” said Sen. Lautenberg (D-N.J.), who criticized the color-coded system back in 2003. “Just like they did in Iraq, the Bush Administration manipulated intelligence to cause fear in the public to further its political goals.”

The book comes out September 1. It is predicted to be a best-seller. I hope it will be available on Kindle immediately.

[UPDATE:  Just to be ‘fair and balance’ the Bush admin. response will be posted.]

Bush Administration response:

UPDATE: Former Bush administration officials are vehemently denying Ridge’s statements.

“We went over backwards repeatedly and with great discipline to make sure politics did not influence any national security and homeland security decisions,” former White House chief of staff Andy Card told Politico. “The clear instructions were to make sure politics never influenced anything.”

“Under no circumstance was Tom Ridge or anyone else directed to change the threat level,” former homeland security adviser Frances Townsend said. “It didn’t work that way, and it certainly didn’t work that way in 2004. It was always an apolitical process.”

Lockerbie Bomber Released

Finally something most of us can agree on.  Ask any American and they will express their outrage over convicted bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi being freed to return home to Libya.  Megrahi was convicted and imprisoned for the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 that blew up over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing 259 people aboard the plane and 11 on the ground in December, 1988.

Megrahi was freed because he is terminally ill with prostate cancer.  He was given a hero’s welcome (despite President Obama’s warning to Libya that no hero’s welcome was in order)  at home in Libya where he continues to publically whine about about his innocence.

Those 270 people who perished at the hand of this criminal would have probably have liked to have gone home and spent their last hours, days, months with their loved ones also, before being blown to bits.  Most civilized people have no compassion for this killer.  What on earth is wrong with Scotland for releasing him?

Megrahi is not worthy of a picture.  He served 8 years of his sentence.

New York Times:  New Questions in Lockerbie Bomber’s Release

Conservative pundits compare President Obama to Hitler, when will the craziness end!

Several people on the previous thread accused the woman who  yelled out , ” Heil Hitler” to a Jewish man, of being a “plant”, put their to create a scene.  I would suggest to those people to watch and listen to conservative pundits.  Rush Limbaugh, the self proclaimed face of the conservative republican party, reinforces the craziness with talk such as this, suggesting that the health care logo represents a Nazi swastika.   Hmmm, I am beginning to worry about myself now!   I am against animal testing, believe my children and your children should breathe clean air, and believe health care is basic human right.   Uh Oh,  my Bubbie would be horrified, Rush thinks I’m a Nazi!

Seriously, are people really shocked that nuttiness like this is catching fire. As a Jew I am offended, greatly, that people would compare, very specifically, a debate on health care to Nazism. Glenn Beck, with his diatribe on healthcare reform being reminiscent of Hitlers eugenics, is only one of many. Listen to Anne Coulter, not a credible pundit, but she does have a following, she also compares President Obama to Hitler in this interview.

Hitler used fear, hate, and division to wield his power.  His improbable rise to power was because he used those less fortunate, those who were different, those who could be scapegoated.  President Obama has shared a message polar opposite of that twisted legacy, he has extolled upon us NOT to be divided by our differences, but to come together, to remember we are ALL Americans.

We can debate policy differences, we can debate ideological differences, but there are NO similarities between President Obama and Hitler.

New Credit Card Rules Go Into Effect

Credit cards companies have been particularly nefarious lately. They have risen interest rates, reduced credit limits, tightened credit and have tried other sneaky stuff to get in under the wire. New federal rules go into effect on August 20 and again in February. Hopefully, these new laws will help consumers.

What credit card horror stories do you all know about? How will these rules change how we do business?

Family Flees from Killer

An altercation in Irongate last Friday evening  turned deadly.  Bad Boy Deonte Donnell Robertson was at the home of Sergio Alfonzo, arguing with Sergio’s wife Candace, who is the ex-grilfriend of Alfonzo.  Sergio intervened, defending his wife, and now he is dead.   Robertson  has been charged with striking Alfonzo in the chest with a blunt object.  Alfonzo died at the hospital following the attack.

Now Deonte Donnell Robertson is on the run.  Inside Nova latest update reports that the family of Candice has moved her and her 2 children out of state to protect them from Deonte Donnell Robertson (who is the father of the children).   Was this Robertson’s first brush with the law?  You know better.

According to the Manassas News and Messenger:

Robertson’s court record in Prince William County Court is full of charges, including his most recent arrest on April 6. He was charged then with malicious assault in an incident that occurred March 15, court records state.

That case has been certified to a grand jury that next month will decide to indict Robertson on the charges.

Also on his record, he was charged last December with two counts of assault and two counts of obstructing justice while making forceful threats.
He was also charged last October with assaulting a police officer and in June 2007, again with obstructing justice.

Pardon me for asking the obvious question:  Why is this criminal not in jail?  What happens to people who assault cops?  Do they get a slap on the wrist?   What does it take?   This criminal should not have been running around loose.  He should not have had access to this family.  Why did this happen?   Does anyone know?

Buffett’s Greenback Effect

We have looked at enough stupid. Let’s look at SMART for a while.

I like Warren Buffett. Anyone that rich or who has a fund that functions like Berkshire Hathaway deserves to be listened to. I listened to him last fall when our country sat on the brink of financial disaster. Now he has posted some strong words in the op ed section of the NY Times. I don’t think Buffett is political–he is just old, wise and rich.

IN nature, every action has consequences, a phenomenon called the butterfly effect. These consequences, moreover, are not necessarily proportional. For example, doubling the carbon dioxide we belch into the atmosphere may far more than double the subsequent problems for society. Realizing this, the world properly worries about greenhouse emissions.

Why Are People Stupid?

People are carrying weapons to Obama events in both Arizona and New Hampshire. These weapons include an AR-15 and various loaded handguns.

One of the New Hampshire men was arrested because he was not licensed to be carrying a loaded handgun. A different man was not arrested because he had a license in NH to be carrying the weapon. He also carried a sign expressing the sentiment:   “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants.” (Thomas Jefferson)  (See video for exact quote.)

Arizona has less restrictive gun laws. About 15 different people attended the VFW Obama event walking around with various loaded weapons. The reason? Because they could. Perhaps the reason for bringing weapons to an event is to intimidate Obama/health care supporters. How do we seperate these knuckleheads from someone who means to do harm to the President or others?

Just because you can do something, does that mean it is advisable, smart, or wise to do? I have not heard Obama on the subject of guns. I believe walking around with a loaded gun at a presidential event is just asking for trouble, dangerous, and frankly, asking for more restrictive gun laws to to be enacted. This behavior is tantamount to yelling fire in a crowded building.

Time to slap a new federal law into place that outlaws guns within a certain distance of any president of the Unitied States except military and secret service. This behavior truly pushes the envelope way too far and it proves nothing.  This behavior is extremist, in my opinion.

Glenn Beck’s Advertisers Bolt

Huffingtonpost.com

Walmart, Best Buy, CVS, and GMAC are among eight major advertisers that have confirmed pulling their advertising from Fox News’ “Glenn Beck” program in light of his comments that President Obama is a racist.

The advertisers did not pull their spots from Fox News, but rather requested that their ads do not air during Beck’s 5PM program.

We have talked about Glenn Beck here on Anti and about disinformation/misinformation. We have certainly had many discussions here about racism, racists, and what makes one a racist. Should there be a price for calling the president a racist?

Apparently, the group behind the letter writing campaign is colorofchange.org. How does this differ from Christian groups conducting letter writing campaigns against things they don’t like?

Of course, Steven Colbert just couldn’t leave poor Glenn alone and comes to his ‘defense.’

Loitering: What is it?

Dictionary Definition:

loi·ter (loitr)
intr.v. loi·tered, loi·ter·ing, loi·ters
1. To stand idly about; linger aimlessly.
2. To proceed slowly or with many stops: loitered all the way home.
3. To delay or dawdle: loiter over a task

:

Prince William County Code Sec. 16-16 states as follows:

Any person who remains or loiters on property, whether such property is publicly or privately owned, in such a manner as to impede or hinder the passage of pedestrians or vehicles, or in such manner as to interfere with or interrupt the conduct of business, or who remains or loiters on such property knowing that an offense is being committed, or under circumstances which justify a reasonable suspicion that such person may be engaged in, or is about to engage in, a crime, or with the purpose of begging, shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor; provided, however, that such person shall have first been instructed to move on by a law-enforcement officer and shall have failed or refused to comply with such instruction.

NO LOITERING signs have been up all over the place for years. Some of the signs are to keep kids from gathering and hanging out. Signs are put up to keep people from taking advantage of store fronts. In general, the loitering ordinances are to keep people from gathering where other people (usually shop owners or local governments) don’t want a crowd hanging out.

This post and resulting thread are to discuss loitering in general, not the specific case brought forth by the ACLU. Please keep case specific comments on the other thread. How are loitering laws used? Are they necessarily bad? Good? How do they help communities? How do they hurt communities?

Again, please honor the request–nothing specific here to the PWC case.

ACLU files suit over Prince William County loitering law

From the Manassas News and Messenger:

Published: August 14, 2009

The American Civil Liberties Union on Friday filed a motion to dismiss charges against four Hispanic men arrested for loitering near the Coverstone apartment complex in Manassas earlier this year.

In the papers, filed in Prince William General District Court, the ACLU challenges Prince William County’s loitering ordinance, saying the law is “unconstitutionally vague,” and allows police to target “disfavored groups.”

According to the court documents filed by the ACLU, Alberto Miguel Arias, 35, Juan Canseco-Rodriguez, 51, Jesus Velasquez Lopez, 43, and Isreal Lopez Amador, 36, were arrested for loitering on May 5.

According to the ACLU, the men were part of a larger group of men standing on the sidewalk near a bus stop outside Coverstone Apartments, where they lived, when police officers approached them on May 5.

The police officers asked each of the men for identification. The men who were unable to prove they lived in the apartment complex were charged with trespassing and the men who could prove they were apartment complex residents were charged with loitering, according to the ACLU.

Prince William County police late Friday said they had no information available about the case.

According to online court documents, Arias, Canseco-Rodriguez, Lopez, and Amador were all charged with loitering.

According to the Prince William County code, loitering is a Class1 misdemeanor, punishable by up to 12 months in jail and/or a fine of up to $2,500.

Nancy Lyall of Mexicans Without Borders said the four men charged with loitering contacted the group shortly after their arrests.

Nancy Lyall of Mexicans Without Borders said the four men charged with loitering contacted the group shortly after their arrests.

“We don’t understand the reason for the arrests,” she said. “They were standing in a public area.”

Lyall said the group received several complaints of police arresting day laborers in the Coverstone area this spring, but hadn’t heard of any recent arrests under the county’s loitering ordinance.

“We believe these individuals were targeted because of their ethnicity,” stated ACLU of Virginia Legal Director Rebecca Glenberg in a statement.

The four men are due in Prince William General District Court on Sept. 1 for a hearing on the loitering charges.

I decided this one couldn’t be summarized. Was this predictable or what?

Does anyone else wonder who else was involved in this case? I drive in that area frequently. I always see Hispanic men. I never see cops or people being arrested.

Stay tuned. This case should bring out the hounds of Hell and some lively red circles beating the war drums.

Meanwhile, who pays for this? Just askin’. I know who I would like to send the bill to.
