The Dreaded Obamaphobia

Lots of kids have come down with the dreaded obamaphobia today.  They caught it from their parents.  Where are the truant officers?  The schools probably can not afford them.

Isn’t it Virginia state law that kids go to school?  Compulsary attendance laws specifically list what constitutes an excused absense and what the attendance laws are.  I don’t think Obamaphobia is on the list of excused absenses–at least I didn’t see it.

What I find amusing is that most of the people who are keeping little Johnny and Jane home today are the very people who have been stridently going around screaming RULE OF LAW any time the subject of illegal immigration comes up or if they see someone they think might be illegally in the United States.  Funny how rule of law suddenly becomes a convenience.  Maybe this one time, on the first day of school, rule of law can be wink wink nudge nudged away…for a greater cause.

Video of the President’s speech will be posted as soon as it is available.

Here’s to a Good Education…from another perspective

Life would not be complete without good friends to send me jokes.

Here’s wishing all the kids a great first day, regardless of their parentage.

The poor principal in the following video is between a rock and a hard place. Perhaps he needs to find a job in a different place. The tinfoil hats are looming in the background. More Indoctrinators…

Coach Lures Students Away for Baptism

Michelle Ammons is furious.  Her 16 year old son, a student at Breckinridge County High School in Kentucky,  was taken to a church on a school bus by the head football coach,  and he was baptised, without her permission or knowledge.  About 20 players were on this field trip and about half were baptised.

The school superintendent  Janet Meeks was there at the service (it was her church) and did not object to school property being used or the field trip.  Supposedly, it was ok because another coach paid for the gas.

President Obama’s Address to Students on the First Day of School

President Obama’s text from the speech he is giving to America’s school children, from Wakefield High School in Arlington, VA has been posted at whitehouse.gov. The entire speech can be found HERE.

Here is an excerpt from his speech:

But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, and the best schools in the world – and none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities. Unless you show up to those schools; pay attention to those teachers; listen to your parents, grandparents and other adults; and put in the hard work it takes to succeed.
And that’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education. I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself.

Every single one of you has something you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That’s the opportunity an education can provide.

Maybe you could be a good writer – maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper – but you might not know it until you write a paper for your English class. Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor – maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone or a new medicine or vaccine – but you might not know it until you do a project for your science class. Maybe you could be a mayor or a Senator or a Supreme Court Justice, but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team.

And no matter what you want to do with your life – I guarantee that you’ll need an education to do it. You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? You’re going to need a good education for every single one of those careers. You can’t drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You’ve got to work for it and train for it and learn for it.

I orginially posted the speech. It was just too long, so I went back and linked to it. Please take the time to read it, especially if you have children in school. I can’t think of a better message to give to any kid on that first day.

It is the first day of school that really sets the stage for those other 180 days. If you miss the first day, its like buttoning up your shirt not matching the right button with the right button hole. You have missed the beginning.

I applaud President Obama for taking the time to welcome the kids back to school and for acknowledging the importance of doing well. The first day of school is the best time for such an address. In my opinion, he hit a homerun with this one.

ENTIRE SPEECH

The speech reportly lasts around 18 minutes.

All the Great White Sharks aren’t at Cape Cod

It seems that Fox News just had a little treat for us.  While gloating that the mainstream media hadn’t covered the Van Jones ‘scandal’ a picture was flashed of all the Obama czars, the National Anthem of the Soviet Union was played.  Fox News has hit a new low.

In the first place, I would hardly describe the Van Jones situation as a scandal.  He had some questionable ideas, hardly unique,  that most people aren’t comfortable with.  Secondly, he is gone from government service.  He will probably be more problem to those who considered him a problem as a free agent.  He isn’t exactly a rabbity little government worker who will take his wrist slapping and go away.  I expect we will hear a great deal more out of Mr. Van Jones.

And finally, does Fox News have no shame?  The National Anthem of the Soviet Union?  How not so subtle.

Fox needs to remember that the term ‘czar’ was first trotted (there’s that rascally word again)
out to refer to an appointed government official in a Time Magazine article in December 1973. It referred to William E. Simon who was appointment as the head of the Federal Energy Administration. William Bennett was also appointed as a Drug Czar under President George Bush 41.

I didn’t hear rhe National Anthem of the Soviet Union being played for William Bennett. The ‘Czars’ are special advisors. Nothing more nothing less. No music is needed.

Getting riled up over Fox News is just a waste of time. It is what it is. Back to that scorpion and fox parable again. This week though, the theme is Great White Sharks. They just do what they do.

Truthers or Birthers? Which are Worse?

We have had all sorts of ‘ers’ this summer.  We have had lots  of different birthers, including Lou Dobbs.   They continue to beat the drum that President Obama is not an American citizen.  Ridiculous!

Then we dealt with a truther, Van Jones, who somehow managed to get his name on a petition suggesting the Bush administration had some prior knowledge of the attacks on the Pentagon and the twin towers.  Ridiculous!

So what’s worse?  Truther or birther?  Which takes the greatest fugue from reality?

Van Jones used potty mouthy directed at Republicans before he was brought into the administration.  Oh well–so did President Bush when he thought the mic was off.  So did Vice President Cheney when he dropped the F bomb on the Senate Floor.  I didn’t want their heads though.  So what.

Van Jones had some associations most of us would prefer not to be part of our government.  It was time for him to go because of these associations and because of the truther petition.  He was over the top and was causing too much negative attention regardless of any positive qualifications he might have brought to this administraton.

And finally, when are the right wingers going to quit?  Never.  Not until the last person in the Obama administration has been brought down, if they have their way.  Jones was just the appetizer.

Carne más roja, por favor.
