During a radio interview, WTOP Radio host Mark Plotkin asked Candidate McDonnell if he would consider raising the gas tax to help fun the transportation budget. McDonnell’s responsed no and allegedly uttered an expletive to help punctuate his point.
After reading parts of his thesis, I rather like this new Candidate McDonnell. At least he seems human.
You be the judge.
Here’s the link Huffingtonpost got off of NLS blog.com

UPDATE from CNN Political Ticker:
UPDATE: McDonnell communications director Tucker Martin said McDonnell’s remark was nothing more than a verbal flub.
“At one point Bob was speaking quickly, and in trying to say ‘funding mechanism,’ he stumbled and accidentally said another word,” Martin said. “It was unintentional, and anyone who spends any time around Bob knows he does not use such language. It was an accident. It is that simple.”
Martin called it “disappointing” that the Deeds campaign is spending “so much time and energy aggressively pushing this absolutely trivial matter to every blog and media outlet they can think of.”

Boy, would I love to hear this one with my own two ears!
Somehow, I don’t think that F is for family. 😉 I personally have no problem with use of the word in the right setting. Politicians are “smooth talkers” and don’t make these kinds of “flubs” as being called by McD’s camp. I think it’s pretty funny actually. Yes, Moon he’s human.
Chris, listen to the links. They aren’t great but best I can do.
The first one at huffingtonpost is easier than nls blog.
I could not get the link to work, but this does not sound like the type of subject matter that would cause someone to use the F-word. Am I wrong?
My sound was perfect.
LBH it was about transportation. I don’t commute anymore, but driving around town can sure make me drop the f-bomb.
I turned on CNN this morning hoping to find out if Serena won. 🙁 The ticker at the bottom said that one of the candidates for Virginia governor dropped an F-Bomb. That’s the term CNN used: “F-Bomb”. CNN never identified which candidate.
I don’t think it will make much difference in the outcome of the election.
There are 2 links. Try the top one. Just hit the arrow on the huffingtonpost one. It is easier. The NLS one has to download.
You are right LBH, it wasn’t an F-wordable situation.
Chris, me too. Lots of times.
In fact, posting that thread made me say it a lot…trying to embed the sound. By the time I shut down last night I had all the sympathy in the world for the guy.
I’d rather hear a conservative use the F word than watch him pretend to be something he’s not. These uptight righteous folks usually implode publicly and I am sick of it. They’d have been better off not being so critical of others. I’d rather they were just themselves – human, with failings and sins and opinions I respect and a sense of public service.
Plus I agree with Chris. No better word to describe traffic or this country’s overall attitude toward transportation. Time to call a spade a spade.
Total non-news!
Our everyday language has coarsened to the extent that even MY tender old eardrums don’t react to a lot of words I wouldn’t even THINK fifty years ago.
Oh, I believe people thought it and said it. It just wasn’t caught on tape and posted on you tube before the event was over. In this country television couldn’t show a bedroom with one bed 50 years ago. Now we live in a world where those who are focused on appearances are butting heads with their own reality. Not endorsing some of the the rappers – but those like Ensign need a knock on the head.
I heard – “12 f-ing funding mechanisms”, to me it sounded like a brain spasm on his part or perhaps he has turret’s syndrome?
@Moon-howler
M-H and Chris, funny funny! I stand corrected.
Juturna, totally agree comment #8. You just said it all.
[round of applause for Juturna]
How utterly shocking!!! WTF???
File this under “desperation”.
@Emma
LOL!
Mr. Self-Righteous isn’t so perfect after all. His supporters will excuse him and blame someone else.
Why is a Catholic like Bob McDonnell going to Pat Robertson’s University? He graduated from Notre Dame and Boston U for God’s sake!
Did he turn evangelical or something?
He obviously got tongue tied. It isn’t a huge deal. Let’s just let it die a much deserved death.
Generally people either use that word out of anger to make a point (guilty as charged but not within hearing distance of the kids) or they use it not angrily but as a descriptive word in their normal language pattern. These people who use the word without anger are people who use it so frequently that it becomes a normal verb or adjective. Spend any time on a ship and you’ll see where the phrase “mouth like a sailor” comes from. When you listen to the context of what he is saying, he is not filled with anger (Cheney’s f bomb). And clearly McDonnell isn’t one of those people who uses it as a normal part of language or he would have been caught many times before (Rahm Emmanual’s fame for his use of the f bomb).
I would have to say it is a slip of the tongue. I will never live down telling my kids to “s@#T in their chair right this minute”
The reporting of this whole situation reminds me of the jokes my kids used to do where you would get the other person to say something “Say the word ‘I’ and spell the word ‘cup'” or “say the word firetruck 5 times really fast” then the jokester would run to mom or the teacher “mom, they just said @#$ and that is a bad word”
Whoever first released this as the f bomb story in the first place should go back to third grade because they would fit right in.

THAT was just f*cking excellent, Slowpoke. Thanks. Knew we could count on your for some levity.
I could care less about the use of the word, but I do not use it in my daily language, and I would ‘slip’ out words that I do not use on a daily basis. He was probably tired of repeating himself over and over.
I once had a friend who taught school named Jack. He was 40 something, never used bad language, was fairly religious and the male version of an old maid school teacher. He once told the story on himself about playing some tape for his students, years ago. It was supposed to be social studies but something was wrong with it and it sounded like Donald Duck. After a minute or 2, he said well, that’s enough of that little bastard, and popped the tape out.
He was motified. He never used strong language. I never heard him cuss other than to tell us that story. He said he doesn’t know why he said it, that it just popped out. He also said no one ever said a word and kept on doing whatever it was they were doing. He expected to be fired and no one said a word.
There’s a whole documentary on the word. I need to get around to watching it. It has J. Garofalo in it, so I may need to keep a barf bag with me.
Can you post a link when you find it?
Slow definately keep the barf bag handy. In fact, maybe even a couple. I can’t watch anything with her.
The press release is hilarious. He would have done better to claim he has Tourette’s. And even better to just refrain from lying.
Guy says the word in plain view and then swears he didn’t actually say it. Well, I think it would be a bad idea to vote for someone who lies so boldly about something this small.
I see that Deeds voted to make English the official language of the Commonwealth, and voted against in-state tuition rates for illegal immigrants/aliens. Good enough for me. Since the other guy is so far gone, I will take the time to go vote for Deeds despite my disgust with both political parties.
My father almost never swore. He was angry at me for cursing occasionally. When i was 16 or so he angrily yelled at me “you’ve got a filthy f***ing mouth”! I let him finish, then walked over to my brother’s room to make sure I had a witness to this bit of surrealism.
But maybe he was just trying to say “funding mechanism”.
This really does take the cake. I’m not only going to vote for Deeds, I’m going to have a few laughs over this with the GOP or McDonnell volunteers at the polling site. This just takes the cake.
That’s funny. Had you had a filthy f-ing mouth?
Rick, Rest well, I am not sure Deeds is your typical Dem.
As you are well aware, I do have a filthy f-ing mouth. Not so much at the time though, which made it funnier.
hahaha…that does make it funnier. As to the mouth, I can relate 😉
