I just got an email from one of our contributors telling me of a new sign on the Fernandez property.

[Original content redacted]

I have taken the content down because the viewers felt that we were giving someone attention who perhaps didn’t deserve it. The City of Manassas and Mr. Fernandez have been going back and forth over his signs for over 2 years. Mr. F has been ordered to take down his signs by the City, in accordance to their regulations. At the 11th hour before he was to enter court, he took the last one down.

Now he has posted another sign. Regardless of whether his sign violates City ordinance, it appears that most folks have gotten tired of his antics.

Rather than give free publicity to something many of our contributors do not approve of, I decided to remove the entire content of the sign and leave up the thread so we can continue the discussion. I hope this method of information sharing suits everyone. If it doesn’t, as they say on the street, sorry about that.

A big thanks to Ivan, Emma, and others who provided updates during the day. Thumbs down to the person who snagged the original.

83 Thoughts to “New Sign in Town”

  1. Pagan Patty

Here we go again. Please, just give it up Mr. Fernandez.

  2. I wonder if this is the same guy? I am just GUESSING here, folks. And the link goes into some gory details, so if you are sensitive to such things, I would say don’t read it.

    ————————————-

Rogelio Medina (“Medina”) was convicted in Lake County Superior Court of Class A felony child molesting See footnote . Medina appeals, raising the following restated and consolidated issues for review:
    Whether the trial court committed reversible error when it omitted a material element from Medina’s jury instructions;

    Whether the trial court abused its discretion when it excluded various items of evidence proffered by Medina;

Whether the trial court committed judicial misconduct when it communicated with a magistrate concerning an evidentiary ruling; and,

    Whether Medina’s sentence is appropriate.

Concluding Medina has failed to establish his right to appellate relief, we affirm.

  3. IVAN

Just checked out the sign. The date is 1-06-09. Since the case Pinko cited was in Indiana in 2003-2004, I doubt if this particular case is related. Maybe someone can clarify this in the near future.

  4. Oh he just got in there, then. This other guy has been in awhile and apparently keeps appealing.

  5. Emma

I drove by earlier today and saw the sign. It’s set back, pretty low key. Aside from highlighting a police officer’s name, possibly for gang vengeance, I can’t imagine he’s violating any code with that one. Best tack for that one would be to completely IGNORE it (unless there is something on the books about endangering a police officer in some way).

I’m guessing Fernandez is feeling lonely and misses the attention.

  6. Poor Richard

Emma, think you are right about Fernandez’s motivation. His
macho look-at-ME machine must be running low on attention.
Anyway, glad M-H opened a thread asking what this is all about –
nobody I know has a clue about it.

  7. Moon-howler

I propose giving this thread a short shelf life. How about a vote? Want me to take it down around 8 pm? I hate the thought of giving this nonsense more attention. Let me hear from you all? I will count the votes at 8 pm and act accordingly.

  8. Moon-howler

    Off topic but local news:

    In just after 4 pm:

A judge has found Xavier Jamaal Pinckney, 18, guilty of two counts of capital murder, one count of robbery and three counts of use of a firearm in a felony.

Pinckney shot and killed 39-year-old Jean Smith and her 19-year-old son James during a burglary in their Dale City home on Dec. 19.

Pinckney waived his right to a jury trial and his case was decided by Prince William Circuit Court Judge Mary Grace O’Brien.

  9. I’m just curious who Medina is.

  10. Moon-howler

no clue who it is. You all probably don’t run in the same circles. Just a hunch.

  11. Rick Bentley

Fernandez is a real class act.

  12. Rick Bentley

Well, only one thing to do. Bring Byler and Park in here, shoot some crappy footage, edit it here and there, throw some up on youtube, and put together a documentary for next year’s Charlotte Film Festival.

  13. Moon-howler

Rick, that is just a small and bitter statement. You haven’t seen the film so afraid we have to discredit your comments.

  14. Emma

I vote take it down, moon.

  15. Rick Bentley

I vote to leave it up. Having already debated Fernandez and his friends’ psychotic ramblings at some length, let’s not stop watching now.

  16. Rick Bentley

Maybe redact the officer’s name though.

  17. @Moon-howler
HA! I suspect you are correct.

Now, I’m not saying this is the case with Mr. F., but here is what I have noticed about some protest groups. They move from protest to protest, cause to cause. I am not saying this is always a bad thing, BUT it can be ineffective if people start to perceive you as a “professional protester.” MH, do you know what I mean by that?

  18. Gainesville Resident

I agree – take it down – no need to give Mr. F. the attention he wants. Pretty bad move by him singling out a police officer, and as usual, throwing out the racist term. If anyone is racist, it’s Mr. F! Nice that he’s featured in the 9500 Liberty film – just giving him even more attention than he deserves. I hope the film shows the sign with the last message on it which was highly racist.

  19. Moon-howler

Pinko, like many of those who were fighting with the police in Pittsburg last week during the G20?

Are the people mentioned even a local issue?

Someone just emailed me that this entire post was pirated and put on bvbl. Perhaps we should just let Greg give Mr. F the attention he needs. I am either leaving it up or taking it down. No half way. Right now the vote is 2-0 in favor of taking it down.

  20. Chris

I have a mixed opinion. While, I do feel it’s a noteworthy thread. I do NOT want Senor Fernandez to get any more “air time”. Enough of his ridiculous and often racist comments. Talk about the ulitmate “pot stirrier”, if there’s one…it’s this guy.

I agree with Gainesville the last sign was indeed highly racist, but hey if the shoe fits. 😉

  21. Gainesville Resident

Could not find anything on Medina. The police officer is a city of Manassas police officer (detective) though. Interesting he’s calling that detective racist – as he seems to have a Hispanic surname.

  22. Chris

Moon, but Rick voted to keep it up. I’m still undecided. Imagine, me undecided on a vote. lol

  23. Moon-howler

How about taking the content down but keeping what we have all said here. I think the conversation is of value.

Rick wanted to edit the comment. I don’t think that is a vote for keeping it up. That is like a write in vote. Not one of the choices.

  24. Chris

Ok, Rick didn’t vote for one the “the choices”. And to think I thought you were pro-choice. 😉

  25. Rick Bentley

Perhaps Congress can work in a pardon for this guy the next time they try to shove an Amnesty bill down America’s throat.

  26. Rick Bentley

So, what is the name of the home remodeling company that this jerk owns, anyway? I think that a boycott is in order for a man who was granted citizenship in America, proclaims us racist, and then flouts our laws, and now seeks to intimidate police officers.

  27. Rick Bentley

Frankly I think that those of us who don’t approve of illegal immigration should boycott businesses that market in Spanish.

In an organized and pointed way. As opposed to what is happening now where many citizens shop and eat out further out from Manassas so as not to be confronted with illegal immigrants, and overcrowding in general, in all directions.

  28. Emma

Forget zoning violations, he seriously crossed a line in my view by deliberately endangering the life of a police officer and possibly his family. Has anyone informed this racist moron that police arrest, they do not sentence

I’m with Rick–his business should be outed and publicized. I wonder if his business’s tax records are all in order.

  29. Chris

Emma, excellent point, the police only arrest.

The name of his business is [xxxxxxxxxxxx] [ed note: business name removed]

Rick, do you think we could have a successful of a boycott as the “big boycott of ’07, when the green signs were in businesses windows.

  30. Emma

Hmmm…think of the headline possibilities: “xxxxxxxxxxxxxx”. Advocates Vigilantism Against City Police Officer.” Could be a good thread topic.

[Ed note: see above. Name of company removed]

  31. Moon-howler

We are not going to use this blog to out anyone.

I am not the dark side. I don’t take truth and twist it to suit my own personal political agenda.

  32. Moon-howler

It took all of about an hour for me to be very sorry that I ever employed democracy here. There is not going to be a personal attack on Mr. F from this blog. Feel free to discuss the signs, the property, Mr. F’s thumbing his nose at city ordinance, but leave his livelihood out of the mix.

I don’t believe in frying people for the sake of frying them, or because I disagree with their politics. If you want to do that, this is the wrong blog. Go next door to bvbl. It isn’t going to happen here.

  33. Chris

I’m sorry for posting it. I do respect you wanting to keep this blog from being dark. But it is of public record. I hardly call that an outing. It’s just the facts. Anyways, at least Emma did get to see the information she requested.
    Emma, your welcome.
    Adios!

  34. Elena

I vote to take the thread down for multiple reasons.

  35. Emma

Seriously, we should be more concerned about protecting the safety of a police officer and his family than this racist, lawbreaking, community-pariah dirtbag whose business is public-record stuff.

    Different priorities, I guess.

  36. Elena

The reality is that we don’t use intimidation tactics on this blog by outing where people live, their personal phone numbers, what they do, or where they work. No one I know works for the CIA, it isn’t as though any of us are actually “private” citizens in the most literal sense of the word. Yes, it’s public information, so was my address and phone number when it was plastered all over the Washington Post comment section, until that is, the editors removed it. It IS possible to have a discussion without disclosing the means by which someone supports his entire family. We don’t know the details so who is to say what happened in this case, which by the way, makes this topic thread difficult to discuss with any clarity.

  37. Emma

I hear you, and I agree to an extent, Elena. But if anyone did any “outing,” it’s Fernandez, and I hope in some way he can be called to account for it. I almost wonder if he isn’t even bright enough to understand what he has done, but I’m betting his handlers do. I haven’t been able to locate any information about this case, if it’s even real.

Otherwise it could have been an easily-ignored First-Amendment exercise, since he’s probably not breaking any zoning laws this time.

  38. Chris

As I said I’m sorry. I don’t feel I was intimidating or anything else mentioned above. Good for ya’ll for wanting to be consistant with the personal information. I do say this sincerely. Frankly, enough time has been wasted on this man and his racist signs.

  39. Emma

I agree, Chris. I’m done with it all. And thanks 😉

  40. Moon-howler

Emma, There is no reason to insult me because of a decision I made. I absolutely did not prioritize Mr. F over a police’s safety. Taking down someone’s means of livelihood in no way automatically erases that officer’s name off of Mr. F’s sign and don’t even try that little trick.

I haven’t yet figured out if that was a minor temper tantrum on your part or an attempt at a political deflection. I see those here a lot. I consider them badly constructed syllogisms.

  41. Poor Richard

Turns out the person Fernandez put up the sign for pleaded guilty
this morning to assaulting a local police officer. The perp will serve
his time and then be turned over to ICE since he is a felon and
    undocumented.

  42. Emma

It wasn’t political, it wasn’t an effort to insult you. I just didn’t understand the need to hush-hush public information, and certainly he has put HIMSELF out there ad nauseum. Putting an innocent police officer’s name out on a banner, however, looks like a deliberate attempt to incite violence, however public arrest records may be.

  43. Chris

Thanks for the update Poor Richard.
Undocumented? He’s a felon and ILLEGAL ALIEN.

  44. Moon-howler

Emma, it isn’t hush hush. That is just not information I want this blog to be supplying after someone has suggested a boycott. Blogging is often a no win situation. Any information that is out there one is criticized regardless of what one does.

Seriously, we should be more concerned about protecting the safety of a police officer and his family than this racist, lawbreaking, community-pariah dirtbag whose business is public-record stuff.

    Different priorities, I guess.

Since I made the decision to take it down, I cannot imagine who else you might have been admonishing.

Surely you remember the rat bastard who spread it all over the internet that Alanna had posted a supervisor’s kids schools and someone’s address. That did not happen. Alanna had taken those things down after several other people had posted them. She felt it was just the right thing to do. However, that did not stop the criticism.

It doesn’t matter about ‘side.’ That is irrelevant. it isn’t chosing a ‘side.’ It is trying to keep consistent standards so everyone is protected, whether we like their cause or not. And yes, you did insult me and no amount of equivocating is going to remove that.

  45. Moon-howler

Thanks for that update, Poor Richard. Will Fernandez be taking down his sign?

Why was Mr. F taking up the cause of this person? Was he a personal friend of his or was it because of his day in court?

It sounds like a no brainer case to me. Assaulting an officer and undocumented? ICE detainer time.

  46. Emma

Then I misunderstood your intent and I apologize. But I think you can see a little from my perspective, that Fernandez isn’t some anonymous blog poster but a person who has put himself very much into the limelight and made himself a huge irritant in this city.

  47. Moon-howler

    Thank you Emma. Accepted.

I can see you wanting to know. I think you can see why I don’t want that stuff here. It just perpetuates unpleasantness. We just make it a practice to not put out stuff like that from the blog. We try to play even handed and use the same rule for everyone. On the other hand, we get blamed for it regardless.

If I were going to do something that endangered someone’s livelihood, Mr. F would not be my first candidate. I have volumes just waiting for someone’s boss if I ever get over my sense of fair play.

  48. Rick Bentley

“Rick, do you think we could have a successful of a boycott as the “big boycott of ‘07, when the green signs were in businesses windows.”

You made me laugh with that one.

Hey I hope someday I can find out his business just so I can make sure I don’t personally patronize it. But I’m sure Moon-howler’s decision is consistent with the blog’s raison d’ete.

  49. Chris

Rick, I fully respect MH’s decision. This blog has consistantly removed anyone’s personal information, and even those that have disrespected them. And I can’t say that that courtesy has always been extended to them(anti Admin).
I really just have nada sympathy when it comes to Senor F., and it was a knee jerk reaction.

I doubt you will patronizing the business.

  50. Moon-howler

Rick, Feel free to use me as a go between if you and Chris want to exchange information. That isn’t the issue. [email protected]

Chris, thanks for your understanding and for reminding others of some of the history with that sort of thing. Yes, we have tried to remove personal information as soon as it hits. Tonight I remembered a while back, someone ripping in to me because some other poster said something about finding out where someone worked. I am sure you remember.

Keeping a blog is damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Last week I caught it over what someone else has on THEIR blog. Today someone lifted the entire post on this subject with my name on it and planted it on the dark side. Well, let them spread the word for Mr. F. I just hope everyone realizes *I* do not post there and I am not spreading his word.

As for nada sympathy, he has simply played the same old song too many times, in my opinion. He has thumbed his nose at the city just once too often for my taste. That is the main reason I suggested removing his message from this blog, once I determined that he wasn’t in violation of code. A code violation is news. (because of his past history)

His message is irrelevant; even more so now I know what was going on. I didn’t like the police officer being named either. I don’t want to help him. I understand why he makes people angry. It worked out all the way around but it just shouldn’t have been so much work 😉
