The above was dictated to me and supposedly it is color coded as shown. The sign is roughly a 7 x 10.

The paragraph below is my opinion only. M-H

I expect the good people of Manassas and its surrounding areas have long been out of patience with this type of signage and with the gentleman who is allowing it to happen. Mr. F stands in the way of any healing our community might want to transpire. He continues to throw gasoline on a fire that is trying to go out. I suspect it is because if the fire goes out, he loses the attention he so desperately seeks. His 15 minute walk of fame is growing dimmer and dimmer.

133 Thoughts to “Fernandez Taunts the City…Again”

  1. “No one wants to keep waving the bloody shirt.”

I do. I want to refight this battle over and over. You’ve probably noticed.

I wish you, Fernandez and Greg would take it out of this town then. The rest of us want to move one.

  2. And speaking of 2 of the above mentioned people, The City of Manassas needs to mind the store a little more carefully. If one goes over to bvbl, one might just see some city chambers that look real familiar. It seems that there are some questionable orange costumes being strutted around and being accompanied by none of than the president of Help Save Manasssas.

Does this mean that the City of Manassas endorses this behavior? It sure is the City Chambers seen in the picture. After my big rant on Fernandez and his behavior, I might just have to back down a little. That picture that someone sent me first thing this morning validates Mr. F’s message more than anything he could put up there on that ugly sign.

City of Manassas needs to do some real self examination. If I have the wrong location, I will gladly remove my post. At first I thought it was the county, and then a historian set me straight. Its all in the seal.

  3. Poor Richard

    – M-H, understand your distaste for many of Greg L.’s actions including the picture,
but the Council Chambers are in a public building and except for clear security
reasons, it is often open. (Ex: the Warrenton-Manassas Camera
    Club meets there).

    – This morning the older smaller sign at 9500 Liberty is down, but the newer larger
one is still up. Wouldn’t be surprised if this is headed back to court.

    – Looking forward to tomorrow night bringing the end of political robocalls –
at least until the next election.

  4. Thanks for the response Poor Richard. If Greg and his buds want to dress up like that, they can go for it. They can walk all over Old Town like that. My concern is that the background of the City Chambers and seal gives the impression that the City endorses or at least condones the ‘joke.’

Since the City often has to deal with issues involving immigration, (the Fernandez sign, for instance) it seems to me that the prudent thing to do would be to take the high road. All appearances of neutrality would be the more appropriate stance, in my opinion.

Even a schlock lawyer could throw in a picture like that to distract and deflect an argument.

  5. Rick Bentley

Moon-howler, you want to move forward instead of backwards or in a holding pattern. then I suggest that you vote for Bob McDonnell, as I plan to do. He wants to move us forward towards state-wide implementation of 287(g) – http://biggovernment.com/2009/11/01/mcdonnell-favors-use-of-state-troopers-in-enforcement-of-federal-immigration-law/

“The idea of allowing for states to have greater autonomy and dexterity in the implementation of public policy could have larger ramifications, if a Gov. McDonnell can invoke the 287g program, as a successful example of federalism in action.”

A Governor who actually works to make Virginia less welcoming to illegal aliens? Who can help to create a climate where they move over to Maryland in larger numbers? YES. Count me in. Let’s break the slatemate on this issue and give the people of Virgina a voice. I tentatively look forward to the McDonnell Administration.

  6. GainesvilleResident

Poor Richard does have a point – if currently the City Council chambers are left open quite often – then the only thing that could be done would be to change that policy and lock the chambers at all times. It would kind of be ashame to see that done – as that would impede access to them by groups that use them for legitimate purposes.

From what I’ve read, the latest sign is larger in size than what the zoning laws allow – so looks like we will be headed back to court. I hope this time around it doesn’t drag out for such a long time as it did last time. If he doesn’t show up with proper legal representation, too bad – no continuances this time!

  7. Rick Bentley

“Gov. Kaine has said previously that he is opposed to having state officials assume what should be federal burdens because this would subtract away from their primary responsibilities.

McDonnell is unmoved by this rationale because state and local officials already encounter illegal aliens in their daily routine. ”

Kaine is an abject imbecile of the highest order. He feels that our police have better things to do than to remove criminals from our communities. His whole approach to coddling illegal immigrants is and has been a disaster.

I look forward to the ending of this left-wing tyranny, this coddling of the illegal immigrant.

  8. And what will McDonnell do with the illegal aliens once he gets them? Is there a State Police Jail? Will he dump them on local jails that are already struggling to make ends meet? Will ICE give them preferential treatment?

How does this McDonnell program fit into the new 287(g) regulations?

I might as well tell you I would ask Mr. Howler to cut off both my arms before I voted for McDonnell. I would NOT vote for anyone who graduated from Pat Robertson University, regardless of what fancy name it now has. Pat Robertson epitomizes ignorance and intolerance. I still remembers his remarks right after 9/11 when he and Falwell said America was Godless and that is why America got attacked. Many people seem to have forgotten about that. No way to suck those words back in.

There are just more important things to me than illegal aliens. I believe that women can make their own morally responsible decisions without the help of government. Therefore I will vote for Deeds. I don’t usually spout who I am voting for but in this case I will at least on the state level.

Kaine is no longer running and Creigh Deeds is not Tim Kaine. Far from it.

  9. Gainesville, I expect this one will come home to bite them in the butt, I am sorry to say. as a resident of Prince William Co, I am glad it happened there and not down at McCoart Complex as I originally feared. The City Seal gave it away for sure.

Something the City of Manassas can be proud of–NOT. If something is controversial, and we know this costume is, then why throw it in someone’s face? No one will know the names of the people in the picture. However, they will know the City of Manassas if they look closely.

  10. Poor Richard

Gainesville – You are right, the only choice may be to close Council Chambers unless
they are in use by a public body – but I don’t like that choice. And am not sure
giving the receptionist an “enemies list” and a stun gun would work either.

  11. Rick Bentley

“And what will McDonnell do with the illegal aliens once he gets them?”

Anything he might do is going to be an improvement over leaving them free in our neighborhoods and giving them the impression that our government is more interested in protecting them than deporting them.

“I would ask Mr. Howler to cut off both my arms before I voted for McDonnell.”

He’s not going to manage to make abortion illegal – and even if he did, it’s not far to a state border. He’s not going to manage to make inroads on pushing gay people into the closet.

“There are just more important things to me than illegal aliens.”

Me too, but not that are in political sway.

“Kaine is no longer running and Creigh Deeds is not Tim Kaine. Far from it.”

I don’t know about that. How anyone in Virginia can oppose 287g as Deeds does – “it’s a Federal problem” – is beyond me. Kaine has certainly left me with a very bad taste for the Virginia Democratic Party.

Bryan Nehman: Question on Illegal immigration. Would you as governor like to expand the Prince William model to the state level:

1141: Deeds: People who are here should be here legally. Says Federal government preempts state on such issues. How can we afford to pay in Va for something the Feds have refused to do. Does not support the “hysteria” about the issue. Says we are all sons and daughters of immigrants. Says we need to be a welcoming society.

1142: McDonnell: Grandfather came from Ireland in 1912. If people want to come to America, work hard, play by the rules, we should welcome them. Feds should allow more lawful immigration, but should enforce what’s on the books. He was frustrated that the AG had no legal authority to enforce such laws, like the 287G agreements. Hopes that could expand statewide. Having properly trained officers in Virginia to assist the Feds would be a good thing.

Deeds: Says it’s a failure of the Federal goverment. Need to focus on how we rebuild the economy in Virginia. Claims to support a tax credit for every new job. Says immigration takes too much time out of the debate.

This is sourced to Robert Duecaster on bvbl.net :

“When I personally asked Deeds to support a state-wide 287-g bill, he asked me, “Who is going to work at the Wall Mart’s and McDonald’s if we do that?” That was when unemployment of 18-25 y/o Virginians was at 15%. Now it’s closer to 30%. He would rather import slave labor than see your kids get jobs. “

  13. Rick Bentley

    Let me translate some “Deeds-speak”.

“People who are here should be here legally. Says Federal government preempts state on such issues. ” This means – “In practical terms, I don’t care one whit whether people are here legally, or illegally. We need people to work the Wal-Marts and the McDonalds”.

“How can we afford to pay in Va for something the Feds have refused to do. Does not support the “hysteria” about the issue. ” This means – the issue has not touched deeds or his supporters in any meaningul way, and he holds those of us who care about the issue in contempt.

“Says we are all sons and daughters of immigrants. Says we need to be a welcoming society.” This means – we need to welcome illegal immigrants and open the floodgates wide.

  14. Rick Bentley

He’s been as clear as mud on taxation, but clear as a bell about what he thinks of PWC’s “hysteria'”and 287(g).

I’ll sit naked at the top of the latest 9500 Liberty sign before I vote for Creigh Deeds.

  15. The City is kind enough to allow certain groups a meeting area, free of charge if I am not mistaken. Perhaps all those who are allowed to use the chambers need a reminder about responsible use. There is no point in dragging the City and the City residents through reprocussions caused by questionable judgement. (Or at least don’t stand under the damn Seal of the City of Manassas!)

  16. Well Rick, it looks like different things are important to us and both of us have drawn a line in the sand.

I also don’t like McDonnell’s budget plans. I don’t want my liquor stores privatized. I need them running freely so I can get through the next 4 years a little number.

Also, Rick telling a woman that we live close to border states is …not a good thing. Abortion is just a flag ship issue. (and a mighty important one I might add) However, it goes so much deeper than just abortion. In the first place, a woman in Bluefield, VA might not think that Maryland or NY were all that close. Secondly, all sorts of tricks have been played with legislation about birth control pills, morning after pills, etc. I don’t trust McDonnell to not veto legislation like something Old Luv Canal Marshall throws up there.

I would much rather deal with a few illegal immigrants than the Virginia Taliban. That’s just where you and I are different. I expect it has something to do with gender.

  17. Rick, did you really quote Duecaster to me? Objective translation?

    Here you go: WaPo

RICHMOND — In one of his first moves after being sworn in as Virginia’s attorney general in 2006, Republican Robert F. McDonnell advised the newly elected Democratic governor that he had overstepped his constitutional authority when he outlawed bias against gays in state hiring.

McDonnell said that only the General Assembly, not the governor, had the right to protect a category of people. But Gov. Timothy M. Kaine and others wondered whether the new attorney general had put ideology above the law.

I didn’t need to read further, although I did.

  18. Emma

Is it possible that McDonnell was citing procedural issues, just as Miller did with the autism bill? Or is it possible that Timmy “Absentee” Kaine and the WaPo (AKA “others”) are just putting their own spin on the issue.

  19. It isn’t the first time I have read that.
But anything is possible. Has everything broken down to the source? Sounds like it. Usually if the Richmond Times Dispatch and the Washington Post say it, you can take it to the bank. Usually.

However, I am expected to doubt the Washington Post and accept Duecaster’s word on an interpretation is asking me to make a leap of faith I am just not capable of.

At any rate, was McDonnell correct?

  20. Let me qualify that Duecaster comment above. I am not saying that he is lying. I am saying that he, like all human beings, probably put his own political flavor on it. I would actually believe Duecaster before I would believe a lot of people, who shall go nameless.

I don’t like the choice of closing the Council Chambers except for official meetings either. Your second option is an interesting one though!

There is no point in dragging the City and the City residents through reprocussions caused by questionable judgement. (Or at least don’t stand under the damn Seal of the City of Manassas!)

I would think that would be the best solution – to remind people who use the chambers about responsible use of them. It would be ashame to limit access to the chambers as a result of this one incident.

  24. GR, as usual, with that organization, the ends justify the means, regardless of who or what is harmed in the process.

  25. Who determines which groups get to use the City Chambers? Can any group do it? What if some odious group like NAMBLA wanted to use the chambers? Is there some caveat to get out of allowing it?

If HSM uses the chambers, would it be reasonable to suggest that MWB could also use the chamber for a meeting?

  26. Rick Bentley

Rumor has it that some amateur porn has been filmed in there. You can see the city banner in “Up and Cummers #71”.

    (Just kidding).

  27. I hope they charged a fee. Times are tough for municipalities.

Shame on you Rick for making fun of my question.

How does municipal property work around equal access? I am trying to think of something that people would support about 50/50 without asking about something that actually uses the building…how about a wiccan group or the paranormal ghost busters?

  28. Rick Bentley

    Which question?

I think MWB should be allowed to use it as well, so long as at least one of them in leadership over there is a legal resident. Not NAMBLA though.

  29. Rick Bentley

Wiccans and ghost busters, no. Non-partisan political or community activist groups I would think and hope.

  30. I agree about nambla. shudder. But how do you tell a group like that no if other people like the photography club have access?

I wouldn’t care if partisan groups met there either as long as all groups had the same access.

I could see no for wiccans because it is a religious group as long as the Methodists were told no also. The paranormal club? Why not? how do they differ from the photography club?

Actually I agree with you about the legal residency thing. I would make it legal resident of the City. County or MP doesn’t cut it.

  31. Rick Bentley

That’s just where I would draw the line … not sure what the rule actually is.

Clubs not of a political or community service nature can usually meet in local libraries.

  32. GainesvilleResident

Definitely needs to be legal resident of the City. After all, city taxpayer dollars pay for the building.
