Sarah Palin’s new book, Going Rogue, has received more publicity than most authors could ever hope or wish for. It should hit the shelves running, so to speak, Tuesday morning. Much has been leaked about of the book, either intentionally or unintentionally. In the book Sarah Palin talks about the McCain campaign, her difficulties with his campaign staff, her family, Alaska, her resignation as governor of Alaska, her near miss son-in-law, Levi Johnson, and an assortment of other things Americans seem to find fascinating.
Sarah Palin appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show on Monday. I sat up extra late to see the rerun. Sarah Palin was gracious and scripted. Oprah didn’t have a prayer of catching her off-guard. Sarah Palin is likable. She is practiced. She appeared to want to leave no trail of words that might need explaining later. For example, she didn’t badmouth that pos Levi Johnson. That must have been tough considering Levi has gone everywhere trashing the entire family. She said he was the father of her grandchild and that would never change. Pretty smart of the lady, both politically and as the matriarch of the family.
What makes Sarah Palin attractive to so many people other than her natural good looks? She is down to earth. She speaks for rural and small town America. She is a feminist of sorts. She couldn’t have gotten have gotten this far without being one. She juggles a rather large family. She didn’t go to a fancy ivy league school; in fact she transferred several times and scraped through. To many people, this almost populist persona is very comforting. Many people seem to trust her. Yet more than half of people in a poll say she simply isn’t presidential material.
Others find her to be an air-head, a quitter, provincial, not well educated, and definitely not prepared to be president, now or ever. Award-winning author, historian and film maker Geoffrey Dunn suggests that Palin isn’t going rogue at all and that her book should be entitled, “Getting Even.” He looks at the book as shallow, nasty and vindictive.
So Going Rogue is now on the shelf. Sarah Palin won’t announce her plans for future political office. Stay tuned. Meanwhile, I think I was more impressed with Oprah.
You hit it right on the nose about Levi Johnston. Talk about not taking responsibility for your own shenanigans!
It’s nice to see you admit that “catching Palin off-guard” is really the only reason someone as fake as Oprah would do this. You were more impressed with Oprah….big shocker there! I know it galls liberals to no end that every book written by a conservative has shot to the top of the bestseller list. Levi isn’t trashing anything except himself. Let’s hear about a recent poll that shows the majority of Americans would not vote for Palin for President in 2012, and fewer would vote for Obama.
I have never made a secret of the fact that Palin is too conservative for me, starting with Day 1. I tried to be fair Slow. I suppose that isn’t good enough is it? I could have just not commented on her or her book at all, couldn’t I?
Listen real carefully: I am a moderate. I am neither conservative nor liberal. Anti has both people all over the political spectrum. I try to bring in posts for everyone. Palin is very conservative in her beliefs. I could have blasted her all over the place, just over her comments on evolution. I didn’t do that. Again, I tried to be fair.
No, it doesn’t gall me that she has a successful book. Good for her. Slowpoke, get over your grouchies.
I like Palin, but I don’t think she’s a good fit to run the country.
Talk show/radio host, definitely.
Her and Ted Nugent would make a great duo.
Mando, don’t you think that is where she is headed?
Does Ted Nugent have a show now?
I hope that’s where she’s heading and not the campaign trail.
As for Ted Nugent, dunno. He used to have a reality show and I think he’s got a book or two. He might have a radio show.
For all the veneer, Palin is an imbecile. In her haste to write this book and make some cash, she quit her Governorship with no lead time, in such a way that makes her unviable for serious office in future.
She wouldn’t likely be a good talk show host either – she’s not knowledgable.
Her 15 minutes is ticking. She and Dan Quayle can go do a speaking tour together soon.
Very few are (even ones that are supposed to be). That doesn’t stop them from being successful.
Rick, ouch. I don’t disagree with you but she has quite a following, I am not sure she needs to be knowledgeable. All she needs is sound bites.
Palin is vastly underestimated by most in the media, and she is smart to use this to her advantage. The “aw shucks” approach that she takes is reminiscent of Ronald Reagan, who was also underestimated by the intellectual elite of that era. Palin has a future in politics, she gets the base fired up, is aggressive, and a heck of a lot smarter than she is painted as being. MH, your assessment of the interview was very fair. I don’t particularly care for Oprah, not because of her political preferences, but b/c I tired of her a few years back as I felt like I was being lectured/preached to or at a seminar when I watched. Her show and huge following started to feel almost cultish, although I think the huge following has diminished somewhat. I had some friends who just blindly accepted whatever she said there for awhile, and it was a bit disturbing. I do like Ellen though, she’s a lot more fun!
IWK, I don’t follow Oprah like I did years ago. I do think she admits when she makes a mistake. I just thought she was very fair with Sarah Palin while still holding her feet to the fire. It is no secret that she was/is a huge Obama supporter.
I did hear that Oprah refused to have her on the show a year ago. I am not sure I believe that.
The real Sarah fans I know are almost cultish too. Sort of like Rush fans and Glenn fans.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!
Sorry, still not done… HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. Oh man, I’ve got tears in my eyes from laughing at that statement… oh boy, that was a good one Moon.
Checked out who’s in the White House lately?
I’ll mention it one more time. “More than half the people in a poll said she wasn’t Presidential material” She scored higher than Obumbles in that same poll.
@Moon-howler
>>> Listen real carefully: I am a moderate. I am neither conservative nor liberal.
That’s funny!
Palin might run for nomination in 2012, but just like Tancredo and Ron Paul, it’s not a serious campaign. It would be fun to watch liberals get whipped up into a frenzy over it, though.
So ring, why do you find that so funny?
Apparently your definition differs from mine.
Slow, I thought the Ron Paul folks were real serious about their campaign. I think so fairly serious political thought came out of that campaign? I don’t think he thought he would be president but I do think those people changed the political landscape to some degree.
Oprah’s a big Obama supporter? Really? I didn’t know that!
Wanna have some fun? Watch Oprah when there’s a musical guest on. As the camera pans around the audience, it’ll catch Oprah, who suddenly starts singing and dancing (it’s obvious she wasn’t before), and she starts mouthing words that you can tell aren’t the words to the song being played, and her eyes will start to follow the camera until she knows it’s off her so she can stop pretending to be interested. It happens over and over, and it’s CLASSIC!
“I heard Oprah refused to have her on the show a year ago, but I don’t think I believe it”
You forgot to add “because it would show that Palin coming on now shows she’s a bigger person and doesn’t help my case AT ALL!!
Actually I didn’t have a case at all. Obviously Palin’s book hitting the shelves is a big deal. Going on Oprah yesterday and today being interviewed by Barbara Walters is also a huge deal. I probably should have ignored it.
I rarely watch Oprah unless she has a guest I want to see. I do respect her for many of her accomplishments. She has encouraged adults to read like no one else has been able to do. She has been a wonderful role model for many women and girls and she been a generous philanthropist.
I am very sorry I put up the post. I was trying to be fair because she is a notable figure in American politics, regardless of who likes or dislikes her.
Frankly, I suggest you all go give Greg all the lip I have gotten lately and see where it gets you.
Done with fair for a while.
When she first came on the scene last year, I liked her. She seemed young enough that I actually thought there was a possibility that she could actually believe the conservative platform. Unfortunately she turned out to be just a politician just like the rest of them merely repeating a line that seemed to work in the past but not really having any beliefs or knowledge about that which she speaks.
@Moon-howler
MH, don’t be sorry you put up the post, it is relevant as she has a bestseller and she had huge interviews this week. And again, you were very fair. It’ll be interesting to see what Palin does in the future.
Thanks IWK. I am curious what she will do also. She certainly doesn’t fit into any mold I have ever seen. I thought she had cooked her goose when she quit. Apparently her base is very forgiving. Go figure.
I wouldn’t pay a nickel to read her drivel. Ugh.
She’s not my cup of tea, either, but apparently plenty of people are reading–she’s number 1 on the Amazon bestseller list. Like it or not, she’s a rising star. The liberal hatred of her is starting to look like fear.
I love Sarah. Please give me more Sarah. Running shorts or fish smock, I don’t care. Just keep it coming. The only airhead right wing nut I enjoy seeing on TV more is the beauty queen from one of the Carolinas who is against gay marriage.
Moon-howler, I second the motion by IWK Manassas. Don’t give up on “fair.” It draws audience.
What eludes me is how did Oprah go from typical Donahue/Maury/Geraldo schlock shock talk show host to someone that should be taken serious overnight? Everyone forgets the early 90’s Oprah like she’s a different person. I remember all the Oprah lesbian love triangle and baby’s daddy shows. Now she has a book club and magazine. When did people start taking her serious?
This made my day yesterday. Here’s the picture she posed for, for Runners World, that is currently on the cover of Newsweek – http://www.runnersworld.com/photo/sarahpalin/slide7.html
She says that by using that pic for a Newsweek article that the magazine is trying to demean her, that it is sexist and biased. That may be.
But how dumb is she to pose like that? Just a few months ago. Hands on curvy hips, camel toe thrust forward, cute little teenybopper shoes.
The picture says a thousand words. She’s hilarious.
I guess she’s lucky the photographer didn’t talk her into taking her clothes off. “I swear Mrs. Palin, it’ll only be seen by the troops, it’ll boost morale”.
I believe those are Aisics running shoes. My personal favorite. I’ve got around 500 miles on my current pair.
She’s a grandma and in great shape. We need more of this considering obesity rates are skyrocketing and obesity related illness costs will be 20% of total health care claims.
If more people got off their lazy a$$es, ate right, and exercised we wouldn’t need socialist health care.
Maybe this picture of Palin will spark some middle aged women to get off the couch, stop watching Oprah and get out and do P90x or something. Or maybe go hunt a moose.
Rick, thanks for the laugh. Do you suppose it is even Sarah Palin? I bet her head was morphed onto someone else’s body. Something seems a little out of sync. Her head is just a little too large.
Mando, I don’t ever remember Oprah like that. She was never a Jerry Springer type. Donahue yes. Springer no. I think she might have just been more chick than Donahue. The really funny part to me is that Geraldo is now the voice of reason on Fox. My memory is too long for that.
No guest ever broke Oprah’s nose with a chair.
You make a good arguement.
But, in the eye of the beholder, I think that for her to complain that the media doesn’t take her seriously, after all that winking and pictures like this, she looks silly.
Skinheads being their usual lovely selves break Geraldo’s nose in a brawl.
What moron would have this kind of trash on set without heavy heavy security?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1KT1QoSCT8
Yea, but it was a weak argument. I don’t really disagree with you. She did do the winking and the cutsy looks. It appealed to her base.
I remember the morphed bikini/ak-47 pic. Same thing.
On the other hand, attractive women seeking serious jobs shouldn ‘t be penalized for being attractive. Nor should they strut it to acquire career pursuits.
It always galled me that regardless of how many advances women made in the work place because of hard work and skill, there was always some bimbo who came in doing the T & A stuff and took everyone back to square one. Until that stops, and it won’t, the 70 cents on the dollar will always be the workplace reality.
I do. I was in college and had too much free time. Her ratings were tanking because she couldn’t keep up with Geraldo/Donahue/Ricky Lake. Her guests got weirder and the situations got more extreme. She was Springer without the fights.
After my course load exploded I stopped watching the “talk shows”, graduated, then BLAMMO, somehow Oprah became some kind of public figurehead. I totally missed the transition. Maybe it was her part in The Color Purple. Who knows.
I missed it also. I was working and raising kids, (you youngster!) I just don’t remember the weird years. I only kept half an eye on her though, if that much. She is just always someone I have liked and respected mainly because she did good out there in the world.
It might have been The Color Purple. She was fabulous in that role. I still cry like a baby every time I see the film and I can sit through some pretty rough stuff without shedding a tear as a rule.
Imagine, wearing running attire for Running World! What idiot does that?
There you have it, ladies! Mr. Bentley recommends the following for all your running needs!

I remember Hillary Clinton running a few years back, looking like someone beat her thighs with a bag of nickels.
When you are Hillary’s age, that bag of nickels might look real good to ya, Slowpoke.
Be careful what you say. Things might come back to bite you right where it will hurt.
🙄
Oh, interesting to note that the interview with Palin led to Oprah’s highest ratings in two years. How ’bout that?
I read the same thing. I stayed up late to see it.
