Congratulations to 9500 Liberty for their win at the St. Louis International Film Festival:  Best Documentary

From stltoday.com:

The prizewinners of the 18th annual St. Louis International Film festival were announced during the closing night party at the Moonrise Hotel on Sunday.

The audience-choice award winner was “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.” The acclaimed film about an abused girl learning to read was also the audience choice at the Sundance and Toronto film festivals and seems assured of a slot in this year’s Oscar race.

But it was a close competition. By mere thousandths of a percentage point, “Precious” eked out a win over the Swiss/Italian romance “Marcello Marcello,” which was named best international film.

The award for best documentary went to “9500 Liberty,” which scrutinizes immigration policy and racial profiling.

An audience award is what it sounds like. It appears that 9500 Liberty was definitely running with the big dogs. Precious is doing quite well at the box office and can be seen at any theater.

58 Thoughts to “9500 Liberty Wins at St. Louis International Film Festival”

  1. Poor Richard, Manassas City formed its own city under the gun. Do it now or forever be a town within a county. It didn’t secede under gun fire.

Manassas City certainly gained more than PWC during the Bobbitt exploits. It cost the county police overtime out the whazoooo. The City certainly got the tax revenues from the media circus that took place in and around the courthouse. It looked like a moon landing out there for weeks, with each trial.

I consider the Bobbitts a freebie for the City of Manassas. No fuss no muss.

  2. Maybe Mrs. Rick will put you on KP duty. That will keep those bad hands busy….peeling about 10 pounds of potatoes almost takes away a person’s will to live.

  3. Censored bybvbl

Poor Richard, alas , there are many of us who are PWC residents with Manassas mailing addresses. You, unfortunately, are stuck with us and our bad reputations.

I don’t believe Eric and Annabel exploited anyone. The initial players set the tone and then they (E & A) covered it. Had a reasonable public dialogue taken place about immigration, zoning violations, etc. I imagine both the outcome and the film would have been different.

Rick, I hope you’re paid for your writing skills!

  4. Emma

And how fortuitous that his last name was Bobb-itt.

Didn’t the Bobbitts live in Manassas Park?

  5. Rick Bentley

“Rick, I hope you’re paid for your writing skills!”

Nope, I just do it as my gift to the world.

  6. Emma, they lived in Yorkshire. I have always snickered about Bobb-it also. 🙄

PR, I totally agree with censored. The alternative would have been to just allow HSM and Fernandez to duke it out. It seems that both would have been at counter-positions since both were in different jurisdictions.

As it is, it has all been neatly recorded, for posterity. My suggestion is to take your ire out on HSM or Fernandez. There is a timeline here. The 9500 crew really are just witnesses of record.

  7. Rick Bentley

They chose to name the film “9500 Liberty” but if they were just after documentary and dramatic impact, “Help Save Manassas’ would be a far better name for such a film.

  8. That name was already taken. So was Help Help Save Manassas from Help Save Manassas.
