Mr. Howler just came out with the news that there is going to be no more Nissan Pavillion. The concert venue out in Gainesville that backs up traffic for miles and miles will soon have a new name. The stock holders voted to rename the pavillion after its new naming rights sponsor, Jiffy Lube.
We have Fed Ex Field, the Verizon Center, the Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium, Wolftrap, the Merriweather Post Pavillion, and ….the Jiffy Lube Pavillion near Manassas. Arrggggghhhh. If only we weren’t already known for the Bobbitt incident, perhaps the Jiffy Lube Pavillion wouldn’t be quite as bad. but what does one say, I am going out to the Jiffy Lube for a concert? Maybe it can just be known as the JLP.
I doubt if many locals will be bragging about this new name. It just sort of adds insult to injury.
Isn’t it a little early for an April Fool joke??
I love going to concert’s at the Pavillion formerly known as Nissan Pavillion. This local will just saying she’s going to Atlantic Reasearch for a concert. I can’t wait to see all the clever nicknames this pavillion will be adorned with.
Nissan Pavilion being renamed Jiffy Lube Live certainly adds to
the panache of Prince William County.
Thousands of local HS Seniors have had their graduation there –
perhaps this spring’s graduates will get a free filter with their diploma?
Paris may have the Louvre, we have the Lube!
Left this on another thread for you, PR. I’ll post it here.

To think my daughter will be graduating in 2012 at “The Lube”. That’s the exact name me and the Mr. came up with too. I can see the headlines now.. Stonewall Jackson’s raiders to celebrate at The Lube. We are in total agreement. I left more comments on the thread Moon started. The nickname possibilities are endless.
The name “Nissan Pavillion” didn’t make me want to buy a Nissan. The name “Verizon Center” didn’t make me want to choose Verizon over their competitors.
I wonder how much of a return a business gets with naming rights to a venue.
LOL, this is funny! Lafayette, maybe you and your daughter will get lucky and the naming rights will change again before she graduates. Anyone want to pick another potential sponsor? “Giant Pavillion”?
Twin, one can only hope the name changes again. I would be in favor of Giant Pavillion over the J-Team Pavillion. Afterall, Giant has supported “It’s Academic” for decades. What’s Jiffy Lube done?
Ring, I don’t think it matters to concert goers who’s corprate name is on the venue the people are there for the entertainment. I wouldn’t own a Nissan because of the hundred or so concerts I’ve been too. That’s just me though.
I fell off the chair laughing PR. That’s a good one. And as you say, it certainly has a certain cache to it – just what PWC needs!
Now I can say I live just a few miles from “The Lube”.
Maybe they’ll offer a special – get your car’s oil changed in the parking lot while you’re at the concert. You’ll save time, and you won’t have to wait in line at jiffy lube anymore!
I wonder if they’ll have some logo for their sign. Maybe a big oil can? They could hang a real huge one at the entrance – as part of their “branding effort” for the place.
This is sad, but it is also too funny. I can see all the High School Seniors saying “my graduation’s at The Lube tonight”.
They’ve kept millions of cars and probably a lot of clunkers running on the road. I’m sure we should be grateful for that contribution to society!
You would think if they are going to put the word “Lube” in the name, they could at least do something to lubricate the flow of traffic around the venue so there aren’t those horrendous traffic jams its so infamous for, that continually inconvenience local Gainesville/Bristow/Haymarket residents!
Great mind runs together. I posted about the Louve also without reading it here.
Jiffy Lube just has nothing regal about it at all. Giant Pavillion, perhaps. Nissan, perhaps. but Jiffy Lube is a silly name in the first place. I made Mr. Howler swear to me he wasn’t teasing before I posted this thread. I still want someone to tell me it is a joke.
Wonder if any of the entertainers will balk at performing at the Jiffy Lube.
He also made up a bunch of dirty jokes about it while I was trying to post.
It’s going to be called Jiffy Lube Live (try it, it’s a tongue-twister). And my kid will graduate there in June. Sigh.
Thank goodness they got rid of that horrible ‘Pavillion’ word. 🙄
I don’t know about the entertainers balking at appearing at “The Lube”, Moon-howler. However, if suddenly you find them doing 30-second commercials between song sets, you might have a problem. Hmmm — maybe I should take that back. You can get paid a pretty good sum for doing 30-second commercials.
I thought it was a joke when someone mentioned it in the other thread where I first saw it. I really didn’t believe it until then I saw this thread go up. Unbelievable.
I don’t know about replacing ‘Pavilion’ with ‘Live’. Somehow to me at least Jiffy Lube Pavilion sounds a bit better. Jiffy Lube Live just sounds stupid. I’m not sure what it’s trying to convey. As Emma says, it’s also a tongue twister.
“Live” refers to “Live Nation”–the concert promoter and ticket vendor.
While Nissan has always been a decent concert venue, I seem to recall it was a bit of a dirty trick played somewhat in secret on the residents of the area, and it snarled traffic all the way to the Beltway sometimes. The PWC BOCS originally authorized 100 performances a year, a cruel joke before any road improvements were made to handle the traffic increase. I don’t think they have near as many performances now.
It’s a little better now that University Blvd. has been built, and Wellington Road has been extended through to Linton Hall, Sudley Manor Dr. goes all the way through, etc. However, going by Nissan it still is a disaster, if you have the misfortune on being on Wellington Rd. and trying to go past the Nissan (OK, The Lube) when a concert is starting or ending. The road is still not widened there or near it until you get up by the Merrifield Garden Center, and it’s a real mess. Wellington Rd. was never designed for that kind of traffic when they built Nissan there. What poor planning. I’m sure the county supervisors at the time saw it as a revenue gold mine however. But they sure didn’t put in the infrastructure to handle it for a long time, and while it is better, it still is bad.
At least they did cut down on the number of concerts, so EVERY summer evening isn’t a nightmare getting around the area. I do remember when it seemed like every night something was going on there, when it first opened.
While I don’t usually have to go that way during the week, I check the schedule on the weekends. It did seem like during the week there aren’t that many concerts these days.
When it was conceived, I read about Nissan putting in new exits, road improvements, etc. Obviously, that was all bs and bluster. Never happened.
Jiffy Lube Live. What a joke.
I got to see the urologist once….he of Bobbitt fame. The surgeon who sewed it back on.
Dr. Gil-Montero? Does he have some ownership in JLL?
This PR disaster is one for the casebooks.

No one will forget the name of the concert hall. Jiffy Lube Live. Holy Catfish, that is just horrible. It is a PR disaster.
Can the BOCS insist that the place have a more dignified name? I wouldn’t care if they named it The Corey Stewart Center Live. That beats Jiffy Lube all to hell. I will even come down and make the motion.
Great, the bad press and the jokes are starting already.
Makes you wonder why no one in the county ever held their feet to the fire and forced them to make those promised improvements.
Another article where they did actually find real named venues with even worse names:
http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/artsdesk/general/2010/01/08/jiffy-lube-arena-at-least-its-not-wankdorf-stadium/
Still, they say Jiffy Lube is about as bad as you can get.
Who wants to go see Barney Frank at Jiffy Lube Stadium!
So I now live right down the street from Live Lube.
I wonder if our property values will rise.
FYI – Jiffy Lube Live is in Bristow, an unincorporated community in
Prince William County, and not Manassas.
I wonder how many people think of it as being “near Manassas”. I bet some folks closer in to DC do think of it that way – since probably one way to go to it (I guess) is to get off at Rt. 234 bypass, which the signs say Manassas even though it really is west of Manassas. Well, it will take you to Manassas if you take it all the way to the end, I guess.
Probably leads many people that just go out that way to go to concerts there, that it is “near Manassas”. Not so many people from closer into DC even probably know the name Bristow , since no exit off I-66 has the name Bristow on it. Gainesville/Haymarket? I bet more people near DC are aware of them then Bristow. None of that is Bristow’s fault – it has the misfortune of not having any signs directing folks to it from I-66!
Now I have to get that awful image out of my brain! Thanks a lot, Slowpoke! Yikes!
Doubt it (property taxes rising as a result) – Nissan’s been there for many years now. However, doesn’t enhance the area’s reputation with a name like that. At least Nissan is associated with high quality cars. Jiffy Lube? Cheap and quick oil changes. Doesn’t exactly say “high quality”.
Now, some other new development like in that other thread – being proposed – WILL raise our taxes, if it happens, that’s for sure!
Of course they want to build that ridiculous soccer complex right outside my neighborhood. What’s going on with PWC lately with all this nonsense out this end of the county?
I’ve been worried about that soccer complex, but now I’m also worried if it does get built, what awful name they’ll pick for it. Then, I’ll be able to say to people I live in between The Lube and The XYZ, where XYZ is some terrible name they end up picking for the fancy soccer complex they want to build on the Wiita tract.
Remember when Obama kicked off his campaign at Nissan –
think he would have done that at the “Lube”?
Can imagine FOX playing with that.
Sorry, kicked off his Virginia campaign at Nissan – the
opening speech was, of course, in Springfield, Illinois.
Good point, PR. Even the full name “Jiffy Lube Live” – I don’t think Obama would have wanted that in headlines associated with where he kicked off the Virginia campaign. It was still big news all over the DC area at the very least. I’m sure it would not have been there if that’s what it was called at the time.
Perhaps the performances at Jiffy Lube Live will all be 15 minutes or less.
Too bad they can’t get you in and out of the parking lot in 15 minutes or less. From what I’ve heard (never having gone to a concert there) especially upon leaving it is very slow to empty out, compared to places like WolfTrap and others that have everyone out of there in no time flat. Part of it is due again to the bad road infrastructure around there (Wellington Road) which allegedly was going to be fixed when it was built.
Sigh….Wolftrap. Such a lovely name.
WolfTRAP? Not sure PETA would agree with you M-H
Agreed Poor Richard. I forgot to turn my sarcasm button on. Especially given my moniker and avatar.
HOWWWWLLLLL!

– Sunday’s great football game between the Cardinals and Packers was played
at University of Phoenix Stadium, which U.P. payed 157M for the naming
rights. (by the way UP is primarily an online school and has no sports teams
of its own).
– Next weekend’s Ravens-Colts match will be Lucas Oil Stadium (I might learn
to live with Jiffy-Lube Pavillion, but “Live” is too much).
And since there is apparently big bucks in naming rights and the school
budget is dropping like a rock — how about renaming some schools?
Stonewall Jackson becomes Viagra High?
On second thought, having taught in public schools, Advil High would be a
more appropiate choice.
I always wondered how it got that name, actually… However, having been there a few times, it is super easy to get out of there after a concert, unlike what I’ve heard about the Jiffy Lube!
I didn’t realize they had paid for naming rights to a stadium. I frequently get spam e-mail from them (or about them) advertising all their online classes. I always new they are online only and don’t have a physical campus location. No wonder they need to students, to help pay back that $157M!
Agreed, Jiffy-Lube Pavillion at least sounds better. The other makes no real sense (OK, I get what the Live part is for given the name of the company that owns it) – and just rolls off the tongue really funny.
So, how do you explain to elderly Aunt Mabel and Uncle Harry that their
favorite niece/nephew’s graduation ceremony is going to be
at Jiffy-Lube? This might be the source of some interesting
conversations. After several moments of silence, “Well, we
are so happy for all of you — plus Harry says he has a coupon!”
