These incidences are being reported on both MSNBC and Fox News (For the doubters). More Bizarro World!
Mufon investigators are out on the scene. They can’t debunk it either. 10% of sightings really are unidentified objects. The remaining 90% are hoaxes.

In the words of Fox Mulder, I want to believe!
Any ideas? What do most people thing? Is it possible that we are not alone? How about Roswell? Was that a hoax or a huge government cover up? How many people really believe there are alien UFOs but don’t want to admit it because they don’t want to be seen as kooks or conspiracy theory nutwings?
And on the subject of bizarro world, there was a 6.x earthquake in Japan this morning. Aren’t there a lot of large earthquakes happening recently? It seems like a big one occurs once a week somewhere. What gives?
Speaking of otherworldly events and an alternate universe, this week’s under-reported quote from Nancy Pelosi: “Think of an economy where people could be an artist or a photographer or a writer without worrying about keeping their day job in order to have health insurance.”
By “day job,” was she referring to those “jobs” that generate tax revenue? Who are those “day jobs” for? The rest of us?

It’s a conspiracy~ 😉 kidding, lol
My mom’s family is from Rendlesham, England. They lived on Friday St….right next to the forest that is England’s Area 51.
I have read about Rendlessham. Do you believe? Some of those sightings there are almost irrefutable.
I don’t know, Emma. How many people don’t strike off on their own because of the high cost of health insurance? I know when I quit MY day job things got pretty costly paying out of pocket.
I imagine Stephen King pays some pretty decent income taxes. I understand what she is saying. This is a topic I have very mixed feelings about. I see a serious need for change. I am just not sure what is in place is the right change. I don’t even know what is in place. Too much hollering and carrying on so the average person could ever sort it out.
O.K. Here’s one for you. Last Tuesday at dawn, Mrs. Wolverine was in her car headed out of Loudoun toward the Haymarket area. In the sky to the right of the rising sun she saw a strange object that was more or less stationary, with a sort of changing shape, and in colors that went from yellow to gold and back again. She told me she had never seen anything like it before in the sky. She has no idea what it could have been. Maybe just a reflection off the sun? But the fact that it was stationary and changing colors struck her as odd. She has lived very near Dulles airport for over 30 years and before that was associated with military air bases and ought to recognize an aircraft when she sees one up there. She was mystified. She’s a skeptic about UFO’s, as am I. ????????
Possibly sounds like a phenomenon known as a “sun dog” which indeed is a reflection of the sun in the sky, and often changes shape/color as you describe. Many people have mistaken them for UFO’s. Do a google search on it as I’m sure it will turn up plenty of info on what they are and even pictures, and you can see if this is maybe what your wife saw.
Of course, there’s all kinds of natural phenomena that look odd and may be mistaken for UFO’s.
CIF’s mention of Rendlesham – that is indeed England’s equivalent in UFO mythology to our “Area 51”.
Who knows what to believe, although I’ve read an interesting book about UFO sightings near military bases which a lot of pilots and others who are more expert at picking out unusual objects talk a lot about. They often showed up around the time of big tests of weapons at military bases. Again, who knows what to believe, but I find it interesting reading about.
By golly, GR, you hit it right smack dab on the nose. I brought Mrs. W up to look at some pictures on the web. A “sundog” was exactly what she saw — at the optimal sighting time with the sun low, the sundog to the right of and level with the sun. Gracias from Mrs. Wolverine. You learn something new every day. The Moonhowler has got herself an educational blog here, for sure certain.
Actually, I think GR is being a kill-joy. Must there be a rational explanation for EVERYthing?
I am skeptical also. Only 3 things rattle my faith in being a non-believer in alien UFOs.
1. I have talked to too many people who aren’t crack pots that have experiences. Same with seeing respected people on TV.
2. mathematically speaking, it makes no sense that we would be the only sentient beings in the universe. Probability works against us.
3. I found out from my mother before she died that my father swore he said he saw a UFO and I even know where he thinks he saw it. I was a young child when this happened. He was the last person in the world who would have wanted someone to think he was a kook. I asked her why I never knew about it and she said he didn’t want to scare me. Bizarre.
I don’t know why the government would cover up information. It makes no sense.
I am glad you all got that solved. Now…maybe it was a sun dog and maybe it was something else.
I’m not kidding, Moon. After Mrs. W saw and identified those photos of sundogs, she remarked that she was surprised how fast I got an answer from just posting on this blog. Take a bow, blogmeister.
Bow Bow. I think that Gainesville Resident deserves the applause here.
You have to admit, we are a diverse group here, for sure.
Several people had mentioned that we needed a short break from hot and heavy politics. I think they were right and I thank them for that suggestion. I guess you can never escape them but you can throttle back a little.
I am just glad Mrs. Wolverine didn’t get abducted by aliens!
OK, that’s great! Believe me, I’ve read a lot about UFO’s, and when I read your description of what Mrs. Wolverine saw – I instantly thought “sun dog”. I wish I’d seen it – I’ve only seen pictures of them – but never saw one myself! Being an astronomer and weather observer, I’d have liked to have seen it! But, I’m glad I helped you identify what she saw!
Actually, as a sci-fi fan, and someone who’s read all sorts of stuff on UFO’s over the years – I’d like to believe they are really out there – but I just don’t know. However, at least we can explain what Mrs. Wolverine saw. There’s still lots and lots of unexplained cases out there that there aren’t easy explanations for, so don’t worry – we are a long way from proving UFO’s don’t exist (or that they do exist, for that matter). I’ve even read the govt’s official explanation of Roswell – and that still leaves all kinds of holes – so who knows what to believe there, for example. I started reading about UFO’s at a young age actually, so over the years I’ve read lots and lots about them – both from the side of the believers and the side of the skeptics. I find myself wanting to believe in them, but not really being sure what to believe – so I’m on the fence.
But sun dogs are indeed one thing that can explain a fairly significant percentage of UFO sightings – as they do look quite unusual, and just like what Wolverine described his wife saw. Their size and color can change back and forth, etc. That’s why people who see them often think they are witnessing something unusual. Well, they ARE unusual – as I said I’ve never seen one and wish I’d seen that one. Unfortunately, at dawn on Tuesday – I was already at work or I might have gotten a chance to have seen it on my commute in.
Of course, I grew up only a few miles from where the Martians allegedly landed in Grover Mills, NJ during Orson Wells’ War of the World’s radio broadcast on Halloween – and they always replayed that every year at Halloween on the radio. That may have been my first exposure to sci-fi at a young age and maybe spawned my interest in UFO’s. A friend of my father’s actually lived in Grover Mills and was really right next to the site where the landing took place in Wells’ story. He often had many tourists stop by his house asking questions about it.
You know what? I much rather discuss sci-fi and UFO’s than politics, to be perfectly honest.
And, I’m happy we helped prove that Mrs. Wolverine wasn’t in danger of being abducted by little green men!
I agree with one thing – the cosmos is so vast that there’s sure to be life somewhere else in it. However, the question is whether if there is intelligent life, it would have the technology to travel the very large distances involved – that is probably faster than the speed of light – to be able to get here without taking hundreds or thousands of years to make the journey. It does seem hard to believe that our planet is the only one that has intelligent life in the cosmos.
As to the gov’t possibly covering up what they know about UFO’s – there are people who argue the gov’t is afraid of the panic that will ensue if they ever confirmed that they did have conclusive proof of UFO’s. Now, I don’t know what to believe there, if there is a cover-up or not. I will say, the gov’t has changed its story on Roswell several times, and even the latest official report has some contradictions as to explanations of what people really saw – that they supposedly mistook for UFO’s (basically at the time top secret gov’t experiments of both high altitude balloons and also tests of parachutes and dummies that were parachuted from high altitudes). The problem is the timeframe those tests were done don’t necessarily line up with the events of Roswell – some of those tests were done in the early 50’s. The gov’t claims people’s memories are confused and that is always possible. Who really knows? I’m just using that as one case where the govt’s explanation has holes in it, and the gov’t has changed their story several times – so it makes it seem a little odd. However, that’s not to say nothing at all out of the ordinary happened at Roswell – it’s just too hard to tell anymore exactly what did happen.
There’s also many other cases that can’t be easily explained.
Again, I’m on the fence about UFO’s – there’s good arguments either way as to whether they exist or don’t exist.
I was working at a Boy Scout Camp up in New Hampshire in 1974 and 1975 – and one of those two years there were a rash of UFO sightings in New Hampshire while I was there .A lot of us scanned the skies every night for UFO’s, but sadly – we did not see any. At the time I was really hoping I would – as there were reports of sightings in Concord – and we were only 30 miles north of Concord. But sadly, the UFO’s apparently didn’t decide to fly over the scout camp!
I figure if there are beings advanced enough to show up here from wherever they are, they’d take a quick peek at the current state of our government and leave in disgust. They’ve decided that their intelligence could only be pulled down by the experience.
What about those UFOs that swarmed the Capitol circa 1952, GR?
Capt. how about getting some stories from Rendlesham for us.
I’ve read about the incident in DC in the early 50’s – and that’s one of the unexplained cases. There’s lots of them out there that no one has been able to explain.
I have watched the Capitol UFO story on the history channel and also on Discovery, I think. It seems very unexplained. I imagine the first thought still is the Russians. But how? They didn’t have that technology unless they have really kept it hidden.
