in·ci·vil·i·ty (ns-vl-t)

n. pl. in·ci·vil·i·ties 1. The quality or condition of being uncivil.

2. An uncivil or discourteous act.

Just for a moment, remove any accusation of racial slur, the N-word, or spitting.  How many of us would like to be an older black man having to walk through an angry mob of white people screaming, taunting, booing, hissing and whatever else they were doing.  Those congressman practically had to part the white sea to even move through the crowd.

In the first place, the crowd should not have been that close.  The congressmen should have had  police escort.  I found myself having bad flashbacks to things I have seen on TV throughout my life, things that were going on during my lifetime.    No one should dismiss it.  Those men were brave to make that walk.  If one of them said he was spat on, then he was.  Perhaps it was just the spray from the vehenom of hatred spewing from a protestors mouth, but spit is spit–stream, lunger or spray, all gross.

Note: The video is the one Cargo Squid referenced.

55 Thoughts to “Incivility and When Perception Becomes Reality”

  1. Wolverine

Maybe that AK-47 in the mall was a bit of extreme example. But, if someone shows up with a .9mm Browning openly on their hip, my reaction is the same.

  2. As is your right. And the cops show up and determine that the man can go on his way, usually. What open carry does also, is to get people to realize that its OK to carry a gun. That guns, per se, are not evil and that those that carry openly are being example of good citizenship.

With what history you have alluded to, I can understand your nervousness. I don’t have the same reaction as my experience has been that those that carry openly or concealed have been shown to be sober, serious, lawful citizens.

  3. Oh, and if I saw someone show up with an AK in a mall, I would call the cops, vacate the area or find a good shooting position if I had no retreat available. THAT is usually a bad sign. As history has shown……

  4. Interesting that Cargo and Woverine aren’t totally in the same camp. Good discussion to a person who has been around guns their entire life…on the periphery. I have just never liked guns that much. Obviously 2nd amendment is not the sword I am going to fall on even though I am a gun owner.

I continue to agree with Wolverine on open carry. If for no other reason, I know the concealed carry has been through more rigorous benchmarks. (that is not to say the open hasn’t, I just know the cc has) I don’t like people feeling they have to prove a point with guns.
