Our weekly update on sewing the seeds of intolerance. I guess Corey is going to put his money where his mouth is when it comes to promoting war over  peace in PWC.

The video recording of the Stafford TEA party rally shows  Corey announcing that on May 4th, he will call for a resolution directing county staff NOT to implement the new Medicaid requirements under the new FEDERAL law. He concededs this directive “may be illegal” but he feels quite confident  that that the “Cooch” will have his back.

Can the “Cooch” send up the National Guard to ensure PWC can withstand the new Federal Law just as  some localites tried to do in the 60’s to avoid desegregation?

Will the rest of the Board “have his back” too, or are some Supervisors prepared to represent ALL the people in PWC, even those that are poor and vulnerable.

88 Thoughts to “Chairman Corey Stewart, Creating Economic Development or Hostile Communities?”

  1. Censored bybvbl

Jeezy peezy, this county is looking more like the yahoo cousin every time Corey Stewart opens his mouth. The rest of the BOCS better defend our tax dollars and put an end to the Chair’s crap.

  2. This reminds me of George Wallace standing on the front steps of the University of Alabama in defiance of federal law to desegregate the school.

I hope that our other board members will have the stones and backbone to just say no to this insanity. We cannot direct paid employees to break the law, regardless of what Mr. Sound-byte thinks of the HCR legislation.

  3. Starryflights

Mr. Stewart may want to explain to Virginia’s two senators why he refuses to honor their votes, both of whom supported the President’s health care reform.

Majorities in both chambers of the Congress voted in favor of the President’s health care reform bill. Mr. Stewart has a duty to respect our country’s Constitution and our democratic processes.

  4. crosier

Sounds like the illegal immigration issue he brought up at last election. Cost Prince William millions, we have just as many illegal immigrants as before. The only thing that changed is there is a lot more hate and fear in Prince William.

  5. e

    god bless corey stewart

  6. It must be election time again. Why would he put the county at risk? Why would he put county employees in legal jeopardy?

What happened to that rule of law he bellowed about like an old bull?

  7. Censored bybvbl

What happened? Someone put a microphone in front of his mouth. He had to pander to his base. Unfortunately, the rest of us have to pay for his mistakes. His stupidity always seems to take a bite out of my wallet.

  8. Board of County Supervisors email addresses are now posted up top in the ‘pages’ tab.

  9. Need to Know

This is just another in a series of phony resolutions designed to distract voters from what the BOCS is really doing. A few years ago, Wally Covington gave us his residential rezoning moratorium that the County Attorney said wouldn’t hold up and Covington himself said was just symbolic. Recently, Corey Stewart gave us a meaningless resolution to stop building permits in the Linton Hall corridor, which is nothing more than a smoke screen to get Avendale approved when citizens might not be looking. Now we get this nonsense. I, as did many others, opposed the Obama healthcare bill and Corey is playing to that sentiment. However, his resolution will at best accomplish nothing substantive and at worst create legal problems and expenses for Prince William County. What’s really going on is Corey’s transformation into a strong supporter of development interests. He’s trying to deflect attention from those positions and all the money he is now taking from developers to meaningless, bombastic pronouncements on other issues as the 2011 election draws near.

  10. Mom

    NTK, are you my doppleganger?

  11. PWC Taxpayer

A less partisan and Chicken Little way of looking at it would be to encourage the County to take no action until the constitutionality of Obamacarel is tested – as challenged by what 20 states now. Another reasonable and moderate interpretation would be the effective instruction that County employees wait until the Federal government and the State of Virginia issue their interpretations and implementation guidance so as to not get out in front of those agencies.

Those that see the devil in anything Corey does, need to give it a rest. “Seeds of intolerance,” “promoting war over peace in PWC, ” “George Wallace standing on the front steps of the University of Alabama” ??? Wow, a little overheated name calling and a little more than off even the entitlement classe’s or the guilt ridden wealth redistribution rocker. Such groups are clearly in a rush to rebuild America (their words), in order to get it done before anybody can read, interpret and understand what’s been done. Take your pills, have a glass of wine… and Stop watching the Ed Show or MSNBC generally as anything other than comedy.

  12. Need to Know

Mom – I’ve noticed that our posts are virtually interchangeable. I think that those of us who are responsible, thinking Republicans (assuming that’s where you are from your posts) who care about the future of our community and the credibility of our Party have a lot of work to do between now and November 2011.

  13. Elena

    PWC Taxpayer,
Your points are, as usual, disingenous from my opinion. Had a Democrat committed these stupid acts, you would be all over it. Why aren’t you offended that Corey invoked the name of Sophie Scholl and her bravery against Hitler in the same breath as rising up against the new healthcare reform. Let’s see, WHERE did ANY Democrate violate any new law the Republicans passed during their reign? Oh, wait, I’ll answer for you, THEY DIDN’T!

  14. Need to Know

Corey plagiarizes Abraham Lincoln is this video also. At least two of his lines are lifted directly from Aaron Copeland’s wonderful piece, “Lincoln Portrait.” This work uses some of Lincoln’s most memorable quotes set to Copeland’s musical composition. The recording with James Earl Jones doing the narration is especially good.

I’ve done speechwriting work in the past and have used these quotes, with attribution to Lincoln. Corey injects them in his remarks wrapped around his reading from the Declaration of Independence without attribution as if they are his own. He, or whoever writes for him, must have listened to the Copeland piece when drafting his remarks and “neglected” to give credit to our greatest President for what he said. Failing to give attribution for quotes is an unforgivable sin of speechwriting.

  15. Pat.Herve

Why don’t they put a referendum on the November ballot, and let the PWC Citizens decide if they want to pay the costs of fighting this. It could be a long expensive battle (not to mention loss of Federal Funding not only to the county, but to the Commonwealth).

  16. PWC Taxpayer

    @Elena

Disingenuous? So basically any response to your views that offers an opposing analytic is disingenuous? “Republican reign” Geez, the Bush years were full of bi-partisanship compared to this Administration and Obamacare is not the only example. I am still trying to figure out why I should be offended by any reference to Sophie Scholl, I had to look it up since I have not seen the movie. I thought you would support non-violent resistance to something that many see as an attack of the Constitution.

  17. Need to Know

    Here’s the passage from “Lincoln Portrait” that came originally from the Lincoln-Douglas debate of October 15, 1858;

“He (Lincoln) said: ‘It is the eternal struggle between two principles, right and wrong, throughout the world. It is the same spirit that says ‘you toil and work and earn bread, and I’ll eat it.’ No matter in what shape it comes, whether from the mouth of a king who seeks to bestride the people of his own nation, and live by the fruit of their labor, or from one race of men as an apology for enslaving another race, it is the same tyrannical principle.”

Lincoln was speaking of slavery. In one speech, Corey invokes both the memory of the Holocaust and Lincoln’s fight against slavery (without attribution of the quote) to support another phony BOCS resolution.

  18. Second-Alamo

Blah blah blah, it’s called politics. Didn’t we learn anything from the glorious and ‘overwhelming’ approval of the health care bill? (sarcasm injected)

  19. Apparently no one has learned much at all. Here we go again. Mr. Sound-byte (hat tip to MoM) doesn’t understand his roll in all this. He is willing, once again, to cost the county thousands or millions so he can get re-elected by his base?

Corey’s lack of understanding of history astounds me. He can stage a massive resistance to health care all he wants. He will not win. Its not about what you believe. Its about being a gnat on the behind of an elephant. Corey is the gnat.

  20. Question?

Why is it all about the ‘Rule of Law’ UNTIL you don’t like the law? Then it’s F$#@ the law.

  21. e

corey stewart is an american hero

  22. Rick Bentley

I don’t see that this helps him get reelected. More the opposite because he looks nutty. I presume he’s doing it because – he’s a zealot. Not a skillful politician.

And that zealotry is why I like him. Because he is and has been angrier about illegal immigration than I am/was.

As to what he’s saying, he loses my interest when he uses the phrase “Obamacare” and makes it even more obvious that the main reason he and people like him are up in arms is petty politics, a fight against the Democrats for the benefit of Republicans. All overblown rhetoric aside, he didn’t want to “shake off government” quite this way until a Democrat won the Presidency.

I do like that he’s honest about not knowing how this ends and that he just wants to shake things up. I’m of a mindset to vote for people that shake things up.

  23. Rick Bentley

The Status quo in America is ATROCIOUS.

47% of Americans pay NO Federal tax. This ain’t right. Progressive taxation is one thing, but NOT A DIME paid? 40% get money back – being paid government money just to live and breath.

This is necessary in part because wages are too low to live on, because we have 15-20 million illegal immigrants suppressing wages, which we are to collectively lazy to confront.

So, we have 47% of Americans paying zippo and the rest of us paying less than we would have in previous eras, because we’re accustomed to running up debt and borrowing from our children’s futures.

Neither political party has any inclination to correct any of this. They just invent new phony battles for us to fight, to distract us from their failures. Abortion – outlaw it! Health care for everyone – the price will magically go down if we can just cover more people! Fight in Iraq for WMD, no fight in Afghanistan instead!

(GOP arguement circa 2010) If we can beat Obamacare down, we can retake the White House and keep taxes low on the wealthy and proceed towards a new round of bailouts!

(Democratic arguement circa 2008) Once elected we can make health care cheaper, leave Iraq, close Guantanemo Bay, and get the economy going again! It’s just a question of getting leadership in place! We have just the guy, a former “community activist” who has little real-world experience but is charming, affable, and likeable. He’s NOTHING like George W Bush who is the cause of all problems! meanwhile with Limousine Liberal Nancy pelosi and doddering Harry Reid running Congress, it’s gonna be a new day in America!

So, I support shaking things up.

  24. And that zealotry is why I like him. Because he is and has been angrier about illegal immigration than I am/was.

My guess is he was faking it.

  25. Corey might be able to back up his statements. He just got a tank company to back him up. As in real tanks…..

The Museum for Americans in Wartime are setting up shop in Prince William County. The core of the museum is a private collection of WWII armored vehicles.

  26. punchak

Amazing! – To bring the word “nazi” into this subject proves that Corey has no idea about what happened during the nazi era. The fact that he stated that AG Cuccinelli is the only one who can sue PWC is the State of Virginia, shows that he’s cowtowing to the really, really far right. Cuccinelli is the idol of Corey’s type.

  27. That tank company has been in the works for a long time. Corey is acting like it is a brand new coup. It isn’t.

Rick, the 47% not paying federal income tax is not new. Check it out since 2000.

I don’t like it either but it isn’t new. Actually I am jealous. I want to be one of the 47%.

  28. Pat.Herve

Rick – Neither political party has any inclination to correct any of this. They just invent new phony battles for us to fight, to distract us from their failures. How true that is – both parties want to accept the status quo, and vote for today without looking at tomorrow.

  29. Need to Know

There’s more at stake in the 2011 election than most people realize. If Corey, Wally, Marty and a pro-developer block wins, Prince William County will become a “Potterville.” The developers don’t see us as a community with whom they can grow. Their idea is to cram as many residential units as possible on their land speculations, cash in, and get out of town.

That’s OK with Corey because he’s just passing through. We’re a stepping-stone on the way to Richmond or Washington for him. In my case, three generations of my family, including my entire immediate family, live and own homes in Prince William County. We can’t just pack up and leave once the developers and their bought politicians do their damage.

Our community will grow and I don’t oppose that. However, I don’t want that growth to be directed by greedy developers, their stooges in the Planning Office and Office of Executive Management, and bought politicians just passing through or trying to cash in on their own land holdings (i.e., Covington).

I was a Corey supporter back when his agenda was focused on sensible economic development and quality of life. Unfortunately, we know now that those were his issues “du jour” and were only aimed at getting him elected. That’s why I am so angry and feel so betrayed now. This latest episode is just another example of Corey’s cynical manipulation of us designed to keep him in office.

Many of us are committed to this community and will be working hard to elect a BOCS in 2011 that shares that commitment. If you want to see passion for change, just be watching then.

  30. Alanna

I don’t believe this will happen. It’s too radical an action. The Supervisors ventured down this road once before and were burned by Chairman Stewart. Simply put, I don’t believe he has the political capital to pull this off anymore. He wasted his shot on the Illegal Immigration issue and now he’s done.

  31. I sure hope Ms. Alanna is correct. We don’t need the expense of another Stirrup’s folly. Oooops make that Stewart’s folly.

Does anyone remember Virginia’s attempt at massive resistance? Is that what this is?
Does Stewart see himself as the next Harry Flood Byrd running the Byrd machine (not to be confused with Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia)

Crash course on massive resistance. There is some information missing from this article.

    Massive Resistance Link

  32. Elena

    Rick,
Did you know that Exxon, with a profit of 35 billion paid NO taxes to the US govt this past year? For those 47 % that paid state, county, and other misc taxes, why are you targeting them? Did it occur to you that probably they are a part of the new unemployed or under-employed due to the financial meltdown? There is much more to this story than meets the eye for sure.

  33. Cut-the-Crap

Doesn’t Stewart recall that PWC went blue in the last election? Some Republican Supervisors should be concerned about their constituents revolting against any such action.

  34. Elena

    Rick,
John Stirrup believes this stuff, Corey is just using healthcare like he did immigration, just as a vehicle to promote himself. If you want to admire someone who believes this stuff, I suggest you direct your affections towards John Stirrup.

  35. Rick Bentley

Elena, I’m not targeting anyone (except Republican and Democrat office holders).

We all grew up in an America where we expected to pay some taxes in. We’re building an America where many people aren’t. It’s not good. The growing disconnect between haves and have-nots is not good.

I am for living wages. In fact it’s one of the main reasons I oppose illegal immigration.

This lazy state our government’s evolved to of knowing that working people don’t have enough to live, and using the tax code to fix it, should not be the direction our country continues in.

(And neither should knowing that we’re overextended, but continuing to accrue debt).

  36. Rick Bentley

That problem is so much greater than the phony issues the parties tango around on – including “Health Care Insurance Reform’ as Obama now properly labels it.

  37. Elena

    Hey e,
Why are you torturing me??? Are you in town, or near by? If you aren’t nice to me I won’t make you awesome dinners anymore!!!!!

  38. I finally got to hear the chairman’s statements to the board on this issue. What he said to the board is somewhat different than his grand-standing political ‘tea party statement’ down in Stafford.

    http://pwcgov.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.php?view_id=2&clip_id=328

supervisor’s time and the numbers are 2:40:40

Mr. Stewart has assured the board that he is not advocating breaking the law. Which is it Corey? I heard what you said in the youtube video. I hear what you are saying to your colleagues. The 2 do not match.

  39. marinm

Elena :Rick,Did you know that Exxon, with a profit of 35 billion paid NO taxes to the US govt this past year? For those 47 % that paid state, county, and other misc taxes, why are you targeting them? Did it occur to you that probably they are a part of the new unemployed or under-employed due to the financial meltdown? There is much more to this story than meets the eye for sure.

As someone posted on another thread.. If you can claim that 47% of America is paying their fair share by only paying state sales tax, state income tax, gas taxes and payroll related taxes then you have to be able to concede that a company such as Exxon who ALSO pays payroll taxes, state income and state corp taxes, sales taxes, permits, real estate, etc.. No one but Wesley Snipes gets out of paying taxes…And, God Bless Mr. Snipes for kicking the federales in the teeth WRT taxes. 🙂

Back on topic to Corey – I think (not having seen the video) that the sentiment (if true and not pandering) that HCR will effect all levels of government and will force radical changes in how we fund things – for example will we have to decrease funding of schools in order to pay for localized healthcare issues? Lots of open-ended questions. The question as to passing a resolution of non-compliance should be legal as Virginia is a Dillon Rule state and counties can only pass laws that are either in compliance with State directives/laws or in areas that the State has ceded to the Counties. In this case, the State has passed a law saying that Virginia will not comply – so it makes sense using the Dillon Rule that a County could pass a law or resolution telling the federales to pound sand. You could almost argue that NOT passing such legislation could empower the citizenry to revolt against the County government and overthrow them (or empeach to use less drmatic prose) them for not following thier Oath of Office.

I don’t think that any of it will really matter as the 19-20 states that are telling the federales to shove it will have a day in court. So, in the coming years we shall see if the government can force us to buy health insurance, buy Exxon gas, and procreate with government sponsored sperm and egg doners (it’s for the greater good!)

  40. kelly3406

    @Need to Know

That quote from Lincoln is very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to point that out after you recognized it.

  41. kelly3406

I never cease to be amazed at the passion created by any utterance of Corey Stewart.

  42. Uh, not really. Bizarro world. It would really help to view the video.

No one here put the words in Stewart’s mouth. He stuffed both in himself.

Seriously, I am not going to answer people who haven’t watched the video. If you haven’t seen it then you don’t know what you are talking about.

    ———————————————————————————————————–

I don’t excuse corporations for not paying taxes either. Isn’t that why we are trying to attract businesses to PWC?

  43. Elena

    marinm,
    paranoid much 😉

  44. marinm

Maybe. But it’s funny that no one can point to the HCR bill and prove me wrong. 🙂

  45. kelly3406

What makes you think that I have not seen the video? Are you monitoring IP addresses?

  46. @kelly3406

I was speaking to Marin who SAID he did not watch the video.

I thought I was coming in right behind him.

  47. marinm

Kelly, my questions tend to make people nervous. It’s the auditor in me. 🙂

  48. Pat.Herve

    marin,

what is the amount of federal dollars that will not flow to PWC if they do not comply with the requirement of expanding medicaid? And, who is going to pay that cost?

  49. marinm

Wouldn’t that be 0? I mean, if we refuse to expand the program and the feds don’t give us money because were not expanding it – nothing would change.
