Overnight: Van der Sloot Confesses to Murder

Joran van der Sloot has confessed to the murder of Peruvian Stephany Flores.  According to MSNBC:

LIMA, Peru – Joran van der Sloot confessed to the slaying of a 21-year-old woman in a Lima hotel room, a high-ranking Peruvian government official told NBC News on Monday.

According to La Republica newspaper, van der Sloot said he broke Stephany Flores’ neck after she grabbed his laptop without his permission and found out that he was involved in the disappearance of an American woman.

The paper quoted van der Sloot as saying, “I did not want to do it. The girl intruded into my private life… she didn’t have any right.

NBC News reported that a lawmaker confirmed that van der Sloot confessed to a police officer during interrogation. However, the source did not know the circumstances under which the confession was allegedly obtained.

Amazing, a laptop for a life.  Too bad Arbua didn’t apply the same interrogation techniques to extract a confession in the Natalee Holloway case.  Van der Sloot could get up to 35 years in prison.  Many Peru will let Beth Twitty at him for about an hour.  Too bad they didn’t extract a confession about Natalee while they were at it.

One less scumbag out on the street and I don’t like name calling.  I will make an exception in his case.

Come up on my veranda and sit a spell….

Why We Like Jon Stewart: Imitation, the Highest Form of Flattery

It seems that he does his show segments on our topics.  Why wouldn’t we like a fellow with such excellent taste?

This lastest video was made AFTER our posts were up.  Furthermore, his take on South Carolina was almost identical to mine.  He is funnier though.

The worst racist, The Race to Replace Disgrace, a sex only happens after midnight…you gotta love the guy.  And before you watch the video, it seems that Haley’s opponent, Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer took a polygraph on Sunday night to prove he didn’t start rumors about Haley’s alleged infidelity.  🙄

Helen Thomas and the Thought Police

Well, in her case, Helen Thomas, White House reporter for years, put her foot in her mouth.

Ok. While we might not agree with her words, there is something bothering me about the hue and cry over her remarks. For starters, she offered an opinion. She said she felt that Palestine was occupied by Israel. I never heard her utter the word ‘Jews.’ There are an awful lot of people in the world who believe that. Why is Helen Thomas, daughter of Lebanese immigrants, not allowed her opinion? Additionally, she said that those occupying needed to go home. Good grief, that is said every day towards Latinos here in this county.

Helen Thomas is almost 90 years old. She apologized. Many news agencies have said her apologies were not good enough because she didn’t really mean it. This is where the thought police come into play. There is just something about that kind of mind control that bothers me a great deal. Who are we to tell others how to think? While we can be held accountable for what comes out of our mouths, how can anyone hold us accountable for what they think we should think.

On June 4, Helen Thomas issued the following apology:

“I deeply regret my comments I made last week regarding the Israelis and the Palestinians. They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that peace will come to the Middle East only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance. May that day come soon.” (June 4, 2010)

To her credit, Ellen Ratner of Fox News issued the following:

Helen Thomas has apologized. What more do people want?

If I had a dollar for every American who has said something in private about a racial, ethnic, or sexual minority in this county I would be a multimillionaire many times over.

Let’s face it we all have said things — or thought things — about “other” groups of people, things that we would not want to see in print or on video. Anyone who denies it is a liar.

Helen is three months short of ninety and her brain’s filters might not work as well as a forty year old’s. Give her a break.

Ellen Ratner is Washington bureau chief for Talk Radio News Service and a Fox News contributor.

Helen Thomas has resigned. Her resignation was announced around noon. I think the greater tragedy is that a 90 year old woman can’t be allowed to retract her statements, especially a lady of her stature.

She is a very remarkable woman. I can’t image being her age and doing the job she is still doing. Many of us who grew up with Helen Thomas will miss her. The good news is, now she is a free agent, she can also speak freely. I expect she will, knowing Helen Thomas and I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of that acerbic tongue.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation: Bob the Trout Needs our Help

From the Chesapeake Bay Foundation:

Bob the Trout asks you to support the Chesapeake Clean Water Act and help make his home a safer place to swim. When CBF was casting for the part of Bob, many Bay species expressed interest in the role. We heard from flounder, rockfish, and even a few oysters. But the rainbow trout we chose, besides having a great voice, also illustrates that cleaning up the Bay necessitates cleaning up thousands of freshwater streams, creeks, and rivers in the 64,000 square mile watershed

.

Is this environmental? Is there a chance that the Chesapeake Bay will be impacted by the oil spill?

The legislation is in front of Congress now. Please call, write or visit your Congressional representatives. Write letters of support to your local papers. Host or attend meetings that discuss and build support for the legislation. You can find information and resources on our Action Center web page.

Why do I think that there are those out there who oppose congressional efforts to save the Chesapeake Bay from environmental hazards? What happens to places when there is no regulation of who comes in and what gets dumped? How do farm lands many miles from the bay impact the Chesapeake Bay? Should certain materials and their disposal be regulated?

Jon Stewart watches Fox Fight Bloomberg for Helen Thomas’ Seat

Joe Biden throws one hell of a picnic and Stewart ponders some serious question on Israel and Palestine.

Much as been said whether our obsession with Helen Thomas’s remarks overshadowed the real questions about what happened on the high seas. Are we more concerned with someone’s words or a nation’s deeds?

Only Fox aired it….? WTF?

Fox News loves to tout that it was the only news(sic) station to air certain events. According to Glenn Beck, Fox News was the only station to show Israeli commandos being clubbed on the flotilla. Jon Stewart takes him to task. It seems that many other stations showed the identical footage. Will Beck apologize? Will his wife call him out over this ‘non-truth?’

Fox News has developed a reputation for being foot loose and fancy free with the truth. This anything goes with accuracy of facts is hurting their reputation and making them very much the laughing stock. It is one thing to take an alternative opinion, but that news organization needs to tell the truth, then take issue.

66th D-Day Anniversary 6/6/44

Eisenhower’s Order of the Day

66 years ago the brave expeditionary forces of the Western Allied Nations entered the continent of Europe around the Normandy area of France. They came by sea and air, and many did not survive the first onslaught. Operation Overlord, or D-Day began on June 6, 1944. Americans will not forget the bravery or the sacrifice made by those who participated in the invasion and those who made it all possible.

D-Day Memorial Falls on Hard Times

The D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Virginia was dedicated in 2001. Why Bedford? Bedford lost the most number of troops per capita than any other locality in the United States– 19 boys from one town dead.

The D-Day Memorial is operated by a private foundation, rather than the park service. The recession economy is the main reason for its financial difficulties. The following video is from last year. Hopefully the Park Service will take it over. We need to remember those brave souls who stormed the beaches at Normandy.

The National D-Day Memorial Foundation

If anyone feels generous, the D-Day Memorial certainly needs help from private donors. Government does not operate this memorial to our heroes. WWII veterans are now dying at the rate of 1800 per day.

Take me to the D-Day Memorial Tip Jar

They are so cute and fortunate to have their health (average age 88)

From Bedford, June 6, 2010.  They weren’t whining about Stalin either.

‘Los Samaritanos’ leave food and water for illegal immigrants

Another point of view from Arizona.  We have heard from those wanting to tighten up on illegal immigration and we have heard from those from PWC.

From the Washington Post:

At a time when state and federal governments are focused on tightening the border to keep out immigrants who cross illegally from Mexico, Wallin and her colleagues help people who make the trip. They leave water and food along well-known foot trails. They distribute maps showing the water sites and search for trekking migrants. Sometimes, they find dead bodies.

Additionally,

While the debate goes on, Wallin and a group of 140 volunteers who call themselves Los Samaritanos work against brutal heat and an unforgiving desert landscape where 61 migrants died in the seven months that ended April 30. In a region split by the increasingly fortified U.S.-Mexico border, they say they are doing moral deeds in the face of a simple reality: Migrants keep coming.

“Most of the people we find are broken, beaten down, sobbing, so lonesome, broken. They just want to go home,” said the Rev. Randy Mayer, pastor of Good Shepherd United Church of Christ in Sahuarita, Ariz., home to Los Samaritanos. “We’re just trying to stop people from dying. Somebody will say, ‘What don’t you understand about “illegal”?’ Well, it’s more complicated than that.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials, who have caught 168,000 illegal immigrants since Oct. 1 in this section of southern Arizona near Tucson, disapprove of the effort

In the end, people have to follow their own conscience and do what they think is right. Sometimes their attitudes stem from politics, religion, or altruism. The one thing that is certain: We don’t all agree. To some, Los Samaritanos are angels–to others, they are devils.

Sarah Palin Blames Environmentalists for the Oil Spill

Every time one thinks things just can’t get more outrageous, Sarah Palin opens her mouth.  She now blames environmentalists for the BP oil spill.  According to her own facebook comments:

With [environmentalists’] nonsensical efforts to lock up safer drilling areas, all you’re doing is outsourcing energy development, which makes us more controlled by foreign countries, less safe, and less prosperous on a dirtier planet. Your hypocrisy is showing. You’re not preventing environmental hazards; you’re outsourcing them and making drilling more dangerous.

Extreme deep water drilling is not the preferred choice to meet our country’s energy needs, but your protests and lawsuits and lies about onshore and shallow water drilling have locked up safer areas. It’s catching up with you. The tragic, unprecedented deep water Gulf oil spill proves.

We don’t need the blame game.  We need to get that gusher stopped and start the clean up.   Does Sarah Palin thrive on discord and animosity?  Does she want Americans to hate each other?  Her behavior indicates that the answer to that question is yes.  Shame on Sarah Palin, again.

GOP Dust up in the 11th

The GOP dust up in the 11th congressional district threatens to leave silt everywhere.  The 2 candidates, Keith Fimian and Pat Herrity are duking it out.  The winner will take on the one term incumbent, Gerry Connolly.  Connolly is a former Fairfax county supervisor.

The lastest saga of the dust up is over Fimian’s college past at William and Mary.  Apparently he was involved in a dorm water fight that went awry and he was arrested and convicted of assault.  This 35 year old incident has now become part of the political arsenal.  Readers should be reminded of the former Delegate Paul Nichols run- in with the law as a passenger in a car in North Carolina and its ensuing impact on his re-election.  Its just what happens around here.  According to the News and Messenger:

Fimian was convicted of assault in 1976 while a student at the College of William & Mary, according to the circuit court clerk’s office for Williamsburg and James City County.

He was sentenced to 30 days in jail with all but seven days suspended, and fined $200.

Fimian doesn’t dispute the details of the incident. But he accused Herrity of trying to use it to smear him.

“Now he is faxing around court documents about a college incident in 1975—35 years ago,” the Fimian campaign said in a statement Friday, though word of the assault was provided to the News & Messenger anonymously. “Herrity has surrendered his personal integrity.”

The Fimian campaign’s statement said that when Fimian was a freshman, a “dorm water fight spun out of control” and Fimian “injured another male student.”

“Keith Fimian was wrong and remains sorry that it occurred,” the statement said. “Keith Fimian has apologized to the other person in the fight and regrets it to this day.”

The Fimian camp also said that Herrity is down in the polls, and that his campaign is “spinning into a disaster.”

Someone should have warned Fimian that is just what Republicans in this area do to get each other.

The local blogs are rife with attacks on 50th state district Jackson Miller for supporting Pat Herrity.  Other politicians out of Prince William are also supporting Mr. Herrity.  It seems to me that this would be their right to support who they choose.  Somehow the Fimian/Herrity race  is  being tied in to the immigration issue in Centreville.  Strange that Jackson Miller is being singled out by name.  He won’t even be up for re-election for another year and a half.

Why is a proposed Centreville Day Labor site being turned in to a political incident?  Haven’t people learned by now that politicians will find a way to exploit the immigration  issue any way they can? That ship has sailed in our area.  The citizens of Northern Virginia are concerned about jobs, transportation, education and protecting their environment.  Northern Virginians  are too smart to be taken in by a subject over which they have found they have little control at the local level.

Attempts by a few to drag Jackson Miller down will not work either.  He is far beyond being dragged down by an immigration issue feebly  tied to Pat Herrity.  Jackson has become a Manassas icon, a favorite son so to speak.  Fortunately, Mr. Miller is seen as representing all the people, just not a few uber-cons.  That’s as it should be.

The primary election is being held this Tueday in the 11th district for the Republican seat.  There are no Democrat primaries in the state.  Their dust ups are all being  handled in convention.   A reminder that all registered voters can vote in primary elections regardless of party.

There is some talk of democrats voting for Fimian.  He is seen as less mainstream, more closely tied to the far right, and frankly, easier to beat in a general election, especially one that takes in a large part of Fairfax County.  Light voter turn out is expected.

[UPDATE:  Additional information at Not Larry Sabato regarding Candidate Keith Fimian.  What Poor Richard did not tell us was that this candidate has been accused of violence and dishonesty by a former business partner.  I would consider this a very critical read if I lived in the 11th Congressional District]

South Carolina, the Gift that Keeps on Giving

Some contributors have accused me of picking on South Carolina.  You know, I just don’t think I do.  I think they dangle it out there for us to poke at.  That state is the gift that keeps on giving.  You don’t even need to remember what they did last…there always seems to be something new.

The latest set of incidents is much like the Twelve Days of Christmas.  First you have a woman running for governor of the Palmetto State, NIkki Haley.  Nikki has been accused of having an affair with a blogger named Will Folks and a lobbyist named Larry Marchant.  Nikki was born a Sikh.  She converted to Christianity.

(Is it getting good yet?)  Nikki is also a Tea Party Person.  The blogger has said he had a physical relationship with her and the lobbyist insists he had a one night stand with her in Utah.  Sarah Palin endorses her and Governor Mark Sanford’s wife defends her.  A state senator has called her a ‘rag head’ because her parents immigrated from India.  Nikki says she is a Methodist.

According to the Charlotte Observer:

Haley has vehemently denied allegations of inappropriate relationships with blogger Will Folks and lobbyist Larry Marchant, and she said Friday that she would resign if she is elected and anyone finds proof she had an extramarital affair.

She refused to say what would constitute proof, calling that moot. Her campaign declined an interview request Friday.

Folks wrote on his political blog that he and Haley had an inappropriate physical relationship when he worked for her in 2007.

More recently, Marchant, a former lobbyist for one of Haley’s opponents, said he had a one-night stand with her in a Salt Lake City hotel room during a school-choice conference.

On Thursday, state Sen. Jake Knotts used an ethnic slur to refer to Haley, whose parents immigrated from India.

“We’ve got a raghead in Washington, we don’t need a raghead in the Statehouse,” Knotts said on an Internet political talk show. He later apologized, saying the remarks were a joke.

Haley, who was born a Sikh and describes herself as a Methodist, called it another shameful attack.

It’s not clear whether the flaps are damaging the married mother of two, who has been endorsed by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. Her rivals had said internal polls show her leading going into Tuesday’s primary.

The allegations come a year after Gov. Mark Sanford, Haley’s political mentor, famously ditched his security detail to rendezvous with his Argentine mistress and returned to confess.

Sanford’s ex-wife, Jenny, who divorced him over his affair, also defended Haley on Friday.

“I have watched with revulsion the spectacle that is now surrounding the governor’s race. Our state is better than this,” she said in a statement.

Virginia politics seems so clean and boring after checking out South Carolina. Politics as usual? I certainly hope not. No wonder we can’t get good people in office. This is far better than any soap opera. Some of these good ole boys will stop at nothing, will they?  Oh and the ‘raghead in Washington’ comment made by Senator Jake Knotts was referring to the President of the United States.  Good grief!  Chivalry is definitely dead.

Fake Military Creds?

What is wrong with these politicians who lie about their military service or lack thereof? This is simply the most ridiculous thing to lie about. Anyone can do a paper trail on a military record. We can tap into the service records of people who served 150 years ago, and further  back than that.  What makes these guys think they are something special and won’t get caught?

If you are running for or are in office, there’s a good chance you have at least one political enemy. That’s all it really takes. Assume you live in a gold fish bowl. That means no running around, no womanizing, no tawdry little affairs, no love children, no videos, no lying about service records.

To date, we have 2 service liars: Illinois Senate hopeful Mark Kirk and Connecticut Senate hopeful Richard Blumenthal. One republican and one democrat. Why? What part of these men’s psyches allow them to lie about such a thing.  Desert Storm and Vietnam aren’t that far in the past.

Voters will have to ask themselves if they want a senator who would lie about his military record.  It might seem unimportant now, but in the long run, it seems like a real barometer of one’s general character.

The Blame Game?

Tucker Carlson can’t breathe without finger-pointing.  What purpose does it serve to try to afix blame?

Who else can we drag out to blame other than say it is ultimately the responsibility of BP Oil. We need to stop the oil geyser before we start assigning blame.

Meanwhile, current conditions cannot continue without a long term impact on our environment and our economy. Seeing those poor pelicans coated in oil just sickens me. I would rather see the problem solved than find someone to kick to the curb. I feel certain BP didn’t want this to happen any more than the next guy. If they are found to be negligent, lets do the inquiry after the oil flow is stopped and the clean up is well under way. Is this something that can ever be totally cleaned up? We certainly aren’t out of the woods as far as the oil slicks reaching us.

Young Mr. Joran van der Sloot May Get His Just Deserts

Joran van der Sloot may get his just desserts after all.  Van der Sloot was investigated time and time again over the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, the Alabama teen who disappeared her last night on Aruba while on a high school senior trip.  Holloway was never found.  Van der Sloot and his pals were held by authorities several times, along with his father, an aspiring judge.  The Arubans never had the evidence to charge van der Sloot, regardless of American outrage and pressure brought to bear by the American press and Natalee Holloway’s family.

\Now, another young Peruvian woman has turned up dead in van der Sloot’s hotel room in Lima.  Caught on camera, the last person Stephany Flores was seen alive with was none other than van der Sloot.  Van der Sloot was captured in a taxi, in Chili.  He went with the authorities  without incident.

Earlier this year, Paulus van der Sloot basically dropped dead on a tennis court, quite unexpectedly.  According to Greta Van Susteren  of Fox News:

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, FOX NEWS HOST: There’s news tonight on Aruba involving the Natalee Holloway case. As you know, the Alabama teenager vanished on May 30th, 2005 while in Aruba on a high school trip.

The chief suspect in the case is Joran van der Sloot. Yesterday Joran’s father Paulus van der Sloot suddenly and unexpectedly died. Paulus was a huge part of this case. Joining us by phone in Aruba is Julia Renfro, editor and chief of “Aruba Today.” Good evening, Julia, and tell me what happened with Paulus?

JULIA RENFRO, EDITOR, “ARUBA TODAY” (Via Telephone):Good evening, Greta. It was very shocking for the van der Sloot family and the entire community of Aruba. Paul was playing tennis yesterday and he collapsed. And the ambulance was unfortunately unable to resuscitate him.

Seems a little odd that young women end up missing or dying around this man.  Best he be put away for a long long time before he harms someone else.  Perhaps being off the island of Arbua and away from those who can make him less accountable will do the trick.  Will van der Sloot weasel out of this one or will he go to prison for the rest of his life?  I suppose it all depends on how strict Peruvian law is and how much pressure the Dutch apply to his case.
